Greetings fellow Earthlings! You are now in the only city in the world that has a real university-trained and government-appointed resident Arch-Wizard. I have had a high profile since I arrived in Christchurch in 1974 since I enjoy nothing more than a friendly chat and the exchange of ideas. Recently some trainee wizards have joined me in the city centre, where you may come across one or two of us around lunchtime getting on and off the trams or sipping coffee outside the brightly coloured Spanish Mission-style villas lining New Regent Street, our home base. Nearby the Christchurch City Council has marked out a special Wizard’s parking place where I can park my modified VW Beetle, which has to be seen to be believed. Although our Garden City with its Anglican heritage suffered a catastrophic earthquake in 2011, we are slowly getting back on our feet again and still warmly welcome visitors. While it’s true we have lost a lot, there’s still so much to see and do here, from world-class dining to exciting and ingenious nightlife, exploring the great outdoors and some exceptional shopping from some of the most innovative boutiques you are likely to find anywhere. However, since whole city blocks have been levelled, you may find it hard to know where you are sometimes – which is why you’ll find this handy in-room guide indispensable on your visit. And if you’re wondering why the first properly trained wizards in modern history would make their home in Christchurch, it’s because its history, its location on the edge of the world, its lively music and theatre, and the astonishing variety of scenery all within easy access of the city are pure magic! Packed with culture, oozing with character and having a cheeky charm all of its own, Christchurch is a city unlike any other. Whether you’re up for a swanky dinner and a night on the tiles, indulging in some serious retail therapy or hankering for a cultural fix, there’s much to discover in the South Island’s largest city. A perfect base for exploring a region packed with adventures, Christchurch is a regular on lists of top places in the world to visit. A dynamic urban centre with new art, hangouts and eateries popping up every month, Ōtautahi has healthy doses of innovation and quirk. Long heralded as one of New Zealand’s most beautiful cities, it had traditionally been known for its parks and gardens, Gothic revival stone buildings and the tranquil

Avon River snaking through the central city. But that was the old Christchurch: in late 2010 and early 2011, the city was subjected to severe earthquakes that damaged or destroyed many buildings and shopping precincts. Today you’ll find a modern metropolis with new and innovative markets, retail centres, architecture, nightlife and attractions interspersed with preserved and restored nods to the city’s heritage. Christchurch-only experiences include the Riverside Market, large-scale outdoor art murals, and the world-class Christchurch Adventure Park. On the city’s fringe you’ll find buzzing cafés and nightlife, and new retail precincts filled with exciting, brand-spankingnew hospitality options opening all the time. Beyond the city limits, in the

surrounding landscape of Canterbury, outdoor adventures abound, from rock climbing, swimming with dolphins (the world’s smallest!) at Akaroa (where back in the day, the French made their sole effort at colonising New Zealand – epic fail, though a certain je ne sais quoi remains), to white-water rafting and hiking plus, in winter, skiing at one of the region’s several commercial and club fields.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE CITY Sizzling style, tiny treasures, mystical makeovers and classy culinary creations lie in wait around every corner of Christchurch. The best way to navigate the central city is by foot – find your ‘sole mate’ at one of the many great bootiques. Sure, you can climb aboard a

Lime, but there’s a lot to miss if you whizz by at 25 kilometres an hour. If you haven’t swung by Christchurch institution Ballantynes for a while, it’s worth a good nosey around. The Lichfield Street wing has a homewares department that boasts exclusive concept store Pottery Barn, the first New Zealand store for the iconic US chain. There’s also Pottery Barn Kids, West Elm and a florist alongside mouthwateringly rich and decadent sweets served up by the good folks at Chocolate Library. If you’re a foodie, The Pantry is the perfect place to stock up on all your tasty needs – it’s got you covered from bold red wines to botanical gins, spreads to meringues, take-home hand-crafted meals and everything in between. The luxe Lichfield Street offerings are rounded out by Kin, an elegant café and wine bar that

will tickle your senses with incredible treats (be sure to try the weekend brunch). Down Cashel Mall by the Bridge of Remembrance is the fresh seven-day-a-week Riverside Market. Stop by and you’ll discover plenty of bangin’ eateries, artisan suppliers and boutique retailers – you’ll be spoilt for choice. Among the 30 independent food outlets and 40 market stalls are a city favourite, Pedro’s Kitchen, where you can pick up delectable tapas; the Argentine BBQ bosses at El Quincho; Bohemian Bakery, serving up fresh baked goods; Cured NZ by the team from Cashmere Cuisine, with their delicious deli fare; and Fritz’s Wieners, where you’ll find the best bratwurst around. Be sure to head upstairs, too, where you can quench your thirst and soak in some sunshine as you check out some of

the ‘laxed rooftop bars that overlook the Avon River. The Terrace has cemented itself as a hospo hotspot with its culinary and nightlife destinations, and the weaving laneways that have sprouted in and around the block are worth a meander, too. At the BNZ Centre you can discover an array of treasures in the colourful and comfortable courtyard, including fab food outlets and the famous Scorpio Books. A meeting place for the business and cultural community, the central spot gives Britomart a run for its money with the space occupied by casual seating, colourful signposts and boxed planters dotted throughout. There’s plenty to see and do on the east side of Colombo Street as well. Make for the shopping mecca of The Crossing and discover a wonderful web of wicked finds.

Hidden lanes and stylish air bridges dominate this style maven’s heaven and you’re sure to find some killer culinary destinations. If it’s stylish looks you’re after, you won’t be disappointed with Witchery, Country Road, Sunglass Hut and Barkers. If you’re on the lookout for a little something for someone special, The Gift Shop is the go-to and has some beautiful treasures including clothes, soaps, candles, skincare and ceramics – some are locally handmade and others are from all around the world. Don’t forget to treat yourself, too! Pick up a coffee from the team at Coffee Culture, and if you’re feeling a bit peckish, Cookai Japanese Restaurant serves up some of the best eats in town on its sushi train with more than 80 options plus a menu to choose from. The SALT District is a punch of

sass and grit, home to funky cafés, gorgeous bars and a plethora of places to eat thanks in no small part to Little High. Taking its title from nearby streets St Asaph, Lichfield and Tuam, SALT’s name took hold as it relates to the ideas of flavour, preservation, effectiveness and dependability. Within the SALT District is Lichfield Courtyard, a collective of eateries framed by some seriously impressive and funky murals. From the river all the way down to Little High is the South Frame, linking the Health, Justice, Retail, and Innovation precincts. Gorgeous art illuminates the urbane office buildings, funky gathering spaces, gardens and laneways along the Greenway. The South Frame is the place for getting together, checking out markets, finding a feed or chillaxing with mates.

South of the South Frame is one of the city’s most exciting developments. The Welder, on the funky and bustling Welles Street, is a mix of artisan retail, hospitality and wellbeing businesses. The Welder’s ethos is an inspiring one – making people’s lives better by producing healthy products and services, and creating enjoyable and memorable experiences. In the ever-so-trendy building (which was created from six buildings dating as far back as 1880), discover some of the best baked goodies you’ll ever try at Grizzly Baked Goods, get your zen on with some yoga and meditation at O-Studio, ditch your plastic and fill your pantry at GoodFor, or try some tender, traditional Wagyu beef at Bar Yoku. New Regent Street is a feast for more than just the eyes. Rife with colourful and ornate architecture, gorgeous boutiques, unassuming watering holes and classy restaurants, the street has earned a reputation as one of the prettiest little streets in the country. Draped in history, New Regent Street

formally opened in 1932 and has been at the forefront of destinations to peruse, stroll down and dine in ever since. If you can’t bear to leave (and we wouldn’t blame you), there are plenty of options for spending even more time in the inner city. Stay overnight in one of the coolest little Airbnb offerings in the Boxed Quarter, or stay for good. The East Frame will be home to thousands in the next few years, with world-class apartment and communal living from Fletcher Living. With many homes within shouting distance of the best playground in the country, Margaret Mahy Playground (OK, we’re a tad biased, but can you blame us?), the pump track and mini putt, it’s going to be a family affair in the central city. And we can’t wait! The city is bursting with so many delicious dining choices, but where do you go when you can’t decide? Don’t battle it out and end up hangry, just head to one of the many dining hotspots – each is unique in its own right and offers a

little something for everyone. Eats on Oxford will have your mouth watering as you walk through the door. Situated on the beautiful Avon River, you can grab takeaways and enjoy the view or chow down in the chilled atmosphere. Eats has got you covered from Malaysian to Mexican and everything in between. EntX is conveniently located in the middle of town and offers diverse eateries. The space is huge and has sweet, savoury, hot and cold dishes served up from more than 12 stalls. The Yard is a super-styly hospitality hotspot that shares its space with offices and retail spaces. There’s French crêpes, Korean pancakes and Otto Delicatessen, a hole-inthe-wall sandwich bar, to choose from among many others. While you’re in the SALT District, be sure to check out Little High. Always full of hustle and bustle, the eight eateries here satisfy your hunger and leave you wanting more. High Street will take you where you want to be – from awardwinning sourdough and sweet and savoury pastries at Bohemian Bakery to the trendy back-alley bars of Stranges Lane. If fashion is your passion, Infinite Definite will take care of you and have you looking très chic. Head just west of High and you’ll find premium menswear store Cutler & Co and on-trend fashionistas Hunters and Collectors. Just a short stroll and you’ll end up in Nutron where you can release your inner tech head with home automation, e-scooters and audio, plus it’s an authorised Apple reseller and service provider. Getting hungry? Head to New Regent Street and check out the exquisite culinary fare at Story, which blends Indian flavours and local ingredients. For breakfast and lunch with a bit of a twist, head to Miro. If you’re looking for a little fun, pop to St Asaph Street where you can have a laugh with the team at CodeBreakers – these guys are the masters of escape rooms and will have you immersed in a world of puzzling fun. So what are you waiting for? Get your walking shoes on and head into the coolest little city in the world. Take your sunnies, your camera and your curiosity because you never know what you might find.

NEIGHBOURHOODS Below you’ll find the main suburbs, what they’re famous for and reasons to visit. Addington/Sydenham On the southwest edge of the CBD, Addington has shrugged off its industrial heritage, but not completely. The SOMO (South of Moorhouse Avenue) district fuses funky bars and restaurants with the institution that is The Court Theatre. Nearby Sydenham, also in the city’s south, has experienced a postquake renaissance and offers boutique shopping (centred on trendy retail centre The Colombo) and some good cafés, bars and dining options like Hello Sunday and 5th Street. Merivale North of the city centre lies the upmarket suburb of Merivale. Rocking a fierce mix of designer fashion, homewares, gourmet goodies, slinky bars and eateries (and having upmarket Merivale Mall as its hub) boosts the area’s street cred as a shopping mecca in addition to making it an essential after-dark haunt. Riccarton West of the city centre, Riccarton’s entertainment HQ combines a sprawling mall (New Zealand’s third-largest) and high street shopping with international eats and buzzing bars, with several motels nestled along its main drag. Woolston New vitality has been breathed into this former industrial area thanks to The Tannery. This Victorian-flavoured boutique/retail emporium epitomises destination shopping. You’ll find retro wares, gourmet foods, craft brewing, fashion and design stores and more on offer. Sumner While it suffered considerable damage in the earthquakes, the seaside village of Sumner remains minutes from the city and miles from care, and is laced with fine fare, slick bars and intriguing shops, all packaged in a stunning beachside setting. Lyttelton Home to the legendary Wunderbar and a scattering of hip bars, cafés, bangin’ restaurants, eclectic shops and a popular Saturday farmers’ market, this quirky portside town is a must during any visit to Christchurch.

THE WIZARD

A former leper colony and rock quarry in the centre of Lyttelton Harbour, Quail Island is now an ecological project in progress and important penguin breeding colony. It’s just a short ferry ride from Lyttelton. With an amazing history, it’s home to several burial sites including a ship graveyard, which you can kayak around at low tide, and has been a recreation reserve since 1975.

Move over Gandalf; the Wizard who’s really most indelibly associated with New Zealand is undeniably this Christchurch icon. Our magic man has been classified repeatedly as a ‘living work of art’. A feature of the central city since 1974, he can be spotted getting up to his mysterious, wizardly business during lunchtimes in New Regent Street, or occasionally bringing some magic to kids at the Margaret Mahy Playground. Look out too for his apprentice wizards-in-training set to carry on a wizarding tradition that’s been

As visitors flood back to a city shrugging off a decade of earthquake drama, the rising tide is floating many new businesses. Unique tours and attractions have emerged – and in true Canterbury spirit they’re banding together to help promote the region as a whole. One such group is the Waitaha Tourism Collective, a collection of five businesses all led by women who are bringing a new wave of tourism to the city to complement the existing attractions. Their common purpose is ‘Tūhono tangata, tūhono taiao, tūhono taonga – Connecting people, places and treasures’. They know that from free independent travellers to luxury private tours, people want to feel inspired and connected to the places they visit and the people they meet. From a kitchen and dining room table nestled within a bustling farmers’ market to magnificent views on top of a volcanic crater rim, from exploring the city’s special places on foot to a sunset view from a VW Kombi or a day immersed in all things wine – all five businesses celebrate the region’s rich and diverse heritage, showcasing good old-fashioned Kiwi hospitality.

RIVERSIDE KITCHEN This light and bright space in central-city gem Riverside Market is the place to come together and learn about the best of Canterbury’s seasonal produce. You then learn to

cook with it and share your creations around a beautiful handcrafted table right in the heart of the city. Kirsten Fox, a former lawyer and passionate foodie, created Riverside Kitchen directly above Riverside Market’s busy farmers’ market. With a full-time chef, Riverside Kitchen hosts product demonstrations, wine and food tastings, book launches and private dinner parties, cooking classes and much more. “We want to create a space that anyone can enjoy, from dedicated foodies to those who would prefer to watch us cook over a glass of wine. AMIKI Ngāi Tahu duo Cate Grace and Lou McLeod’s venture AMIKI (from the universal Esperanto language meaning “to make friends”) was inspired by their lead guide, Riwai, who after the Canterbury earthquakes discovered people wanted to create memories and experience through sharing and manaakitanga. Locally owned and operated, AMIKI hosts unique inner-city walking tours that share the local culture with international and local manuhiri (visitors). The tours weave through laneways, gardens and squares, past historic buildings and landmarks, revealing gems hidden in plain sight. AMIKI share an often-forgotten Māori and European whakapapa (history) and

perspective of Ōtautahi (Christchurch). But it doesn’t stop there – as keen foodies they also offer culinary-based tours designed around the preferences of the people they are hosting. “We combined our passions for storytelling with the region’s rich kai (food) and inu (drink) offerings, connecting our guests to unique people and places,” Cate says. “Our guests arrive as strangers, and by connecting to genuine local people and places we hope everyone leaves as friends, with wonderful memories of our home town.” amiki.nz

CRATER RIM WALKS Nicole Elwood’s parents are the inspiration behind her venture, Crater Rim Walks. For years they organised guided Sunday walks and have passed that knowledge on to their daughter, who now offers daily walks sharing panoramic views, picturesque bays and quaint little coffee spots. Her team of local guides offer a personal but expert service, enabling visitors to explore off the beaten track. There are four walks to choose from, each taking you to the Crater Rim on the top of the Port Hills, surrounding the

caldera of the ancient volcano. This affords amazing views of the rugged Pacific coastline stretching across Pegasus Bay to the often snow-capped Southern Alps, as well as the picturesque Lyttelton harbour and wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean. You’ve had a strong sustainability focus for a long time. What does sustainability mean to you? In a nutshell, working to protect the future of our planet and its people while meeting the needs of today. This has to be a holistic focus – environmental, social, cultural issues are all interconnected and can’t be solved independently of each other. What are the latest sustainable initiatives you’ve been working on? We have been on our sustainable journey for 20 years now, and over that time we’ve put a lot of work into finding and developing the most sustainable fabrics and fibres and walking the talk when it comes to best practice in terms of our design and manufacturing process. One issue that is still a biggie for us is all the plastic in our environment. It bugs us that we can’t find a genuinely better alternative to poly bags that we use to protect the garments in our warehouse from moths et cetera. We’ve looked at a huge range of alternatives from bags made from sugar cane to bags made from corn starch and while these ‘compostable’ bags sound nice, in reality they’re still not very kind to the planet. Last year we undertook a comprehensive three-month study into plastic bag alternatives. In order to make compostable packaging more flexible, stronger and water-resistant, a biodegradable binding agent such as PBAT is usually added. It is partially derived from a petrochemical, fossil-based agent that is still not fully renewable. The ‘compostable’ options currently available are not suitable to be

placed in kerbside recycling. If they find their way into the recycling stream, then they contaminate all the other material, meaning nothing can be recycled and it will all end up in landfill. Our study showed that there is no transparent, waterproof, insect-proof bag material that is better in our current environment with the available recycling and composting facilities than a poly bag, so it’s something we’ll continue to work on. When it comes to sustainability and sociallyconscious products, how important is it to pair them with good aesthetic design? Good aesthetic design inspires and feeds the soul. The uptake of environmentally and socially-conscious products is much, much higher when a product is aesthetically pleasing, so this is really important to us. It’s always been our mantra that you shouldn’t have to give up luxury and great design to be good to the planet.

What is the cornerstone of Untouched World’s design philosophy? Less is more. We believe in timeless design and by using luxurious, quality fabrics and fibres that are easy to wear and easy on the earth, our pieces become those go-to styles in the wardrobe that you’ll want to wear because they make you feel good. We design our pieces to dress up or down effortlessly, so they can take you anywhere and you don’t need as much in your wardrobe. Tell us about Untouched World Kitchen – what can people expect when they visit you? A light, airy, relaxed space where our friendly team serve simple yet nourishing and delicious dishes, catering for vegetarians, vegans and meat eaters, with plenty of options for those who are dairy or gluten intolerant. I really enjoyed ‘Becoming’ by Michelle Obama, a frank and honest autobiography; ‘Shoe Dog’ by Phil Knight, a fascinating behind the scenes story of Nike’s beginnings; ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’ by Paramahansa Yogananda – inspiring, grounding and endlessly re-readable. I’m a fan of non-fiction. What are your proudest moments? ‘People moments’ with the wonderful bunch of humans I am privileged to work alongside. I recently attended our Untouched World Foundation’s Advanced Leadership weekend in Kaikōura where a group of incredible young people, alumni from our UWF leadership programmes, got

together. These capable young people were tasked with coming up with a big lofty goal they could aspire to, to make the world a better place. There was a huge level of passion, the thinking was fresh and unlimited, but at the same time practical. I left there truly inspired. Four essential things in your handbag? If you are radiating love and positivity, that is what you’ll get back. If things are a bit lumpy, check your thoughts. 01 — Christchurch Symphony Orchestra

Whether you’re after a laugh, thrilling theatre to take you to the fringe and back, or a fabulous art fix, you’ll find Christchurch is a hotspot for culture vultures. There’s always something worth checking out somewhere in the city’s cultural scene. Comedy, dance, theatre, music spanning from international pop stars through to classical performances, and both local and international films are all well represented throughout the year, while a good sprinkling of art galleries, including the highly regarded double-hit of Christchurch Art Gallery and CoCA (Centre of Contemporary Art) offer the chance to familiarise yourself with local work. Take in a show at the city’s iconic Isaac Theatre Royal, where the interiors are as impressive as the spectacle taking place on stage. Dating back to 1906, this grand old dame of Christchurch entertainment was one of many pieces of local heritage that was dealt a severe blow during the

earthquakes, and even faced demolition at one point. However, following a huge restoration task buoyed by the fundraising assistance of prominent figures such as Sir Ian McKellen (who raised more than $350,000 to help rebuild the century-old theatre by touring a one-man show across New Zealand), the theatre was returned to its full Edwardian glory and celebrated with a triumphant re-opening in 2014. Make sure you look up to check out the ornate dome ceiling when you’re there. Christchurch’s impressive cinema scene includes the obligatory super-sized multiplexstyle cinemas rocking huge screens, booming bass and the latest blockbusters, coexisting with a thriving assortment of independent boutique cinemas, where buckets of popcorn and cola are switched out for local wine lists and gourmet goodies. Lumière Cinemas is one such boutique, housed in the historic Arts Centre with a luxe Art Deco-themed interior and showing a range of

films from highly-anticipated new releases to throwback screenings of your old favourites. To satisfy your appetite for arthouse, Lumière also screens a programme for the New Zealand International Film Festival each year.

PERFORMANCE Christchurch is the proud home of the country’s largest professional theatre company, The Court Theatre, which sells over 150,000 tickets each year. The city’s buzzing theatre scene attracts national and international touring theatre productions, and several semi-pro and amateur theatre groups exist around the city, meaning there’s almost always something good to catch – thought-provoking dramas, hilarious comedies, showstopping musicals and more. Dance companies are frequent visitors – the city regularly hosts the Royal New Zealand Ballet and other national and international companies.

New Zealand’s acclaimed national opera company, New Zealand Opera, graces the Isaac Theatre Royal each year as well. Christchurch also has a noteworthy comedy scene: late-night improv comedy show Scared Scriptless is Australasia’s longest-running comedy show. Christchurch’s very own Good Times Comedy Club is a great base for a good laugh, with regular stand-up comedy events on each week, and the Comedy Carnival brings a lineup of local, national and international comedians to town every year.

FESTIVALS A vibrant festival scene sees an increasing number of big days out available to Christchurch visitors every year. With everything from summer festivals to cultural celebrations, performance festivals, food and wine fests and more, you’re likely to find something to appeal. The South Island’s largest literary festival, WORD Christchurch, is the annual event for anyone with a love of the written word, while the worldrenowned Bread & Circus Buskers Festival is a cornerstone event of the Christchurch summer calendar. For food and drink aficionados, Gindulgence, the Great Kiwi Beer Festival and the South Island Wine & Food Festival are here for every enthusiast looking for an excuse to celebrate their favourite beverage.

CONCERTS Home to a lively pub music scene, Christchurch sees plenty of larger-scale concerts and gigs as well. The busy calendar of local professional orchestra the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is supplemented by visits from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) and groups visiting under the Chamber Music New Zealand umbrella, as well as plenty of big names in contemporary music, with the city also having several of its very own music festivals. Electric Avenue turns Hagley Park into a day-long party in February, bringing the good vibes with carnival rides and 12 hours of killer live music. Selwyn Sounds is the perfect way to send off summer, with some of the greatest names in Kiwi music taking the stage, and a range of food trucks providing international cuisine.

EXHIBITIONS The city’s art scene is stronger than ever with a series of new and rejuvenated spaces. The stunning Christchurch Art Gallery (corner of Montreal Street and Worcester Boulevard, christchurchartgallery.org.nz) is the city’s artistic hub and holds some of the country’s premier collections. The gallery regularly hosts international touring exhibitions and runs a range

of local exhibitions guaranteed to fascinate, intrigue and inspire. Around the corner from the Christchurch Art Gallery, CoCA always has something interesting up its sleeve. It is also a regular host to a range of artistic events – find out more on the centre’s website coca.org.nz. Every year Christchurch plays host to SCAPE Public Art, a contemporary art festival that sees a range of sculptures, murals and installations pop up around the city, and usually results in a few works making a permanent home here. David McCracken’s Diminish and Ascend, a staircase fixed in the middle of the Botanic Gardens’ Kiosk Lake, stretches to a vanishing point towards the sky and is often perched upon by avian art critics. Upstream of the Gloucester Street bridge, standing in the flowing current of the Ōtākaro Avon River is STAY, a sculpture of a pensive human figure by British artist Antony Gormley. The companion piece to this work resides in The Arts Centre, two very different environments to act as a quiet catalyst for reflection. From The Arts Centre it’s just a short stroll back down Worcester Boulevard to Rolleston Avenue and the iconic Gothic stone buildings of the Canterbury Museum, which contains an array of long-term and special exhibitions. It’s a must-visit for anyone who wants to know more about the history of the region and its people.

Q&A: Sēmisi Fetokai Potauaine

Further afield in Wigram is the Air Force Museum of New Zealand, an aviation wonderland with a range of historical aircraft on display. The museum also hosts regular special exhibitions. Bryce Gallery’s new premises in Ohoka is a real house, which is very helpful for those browsing the exhibitions and refined selection of purchasable artworks, trying to decide how a piece might look in their own home. Open Fridays and weekends with more than 100 artworks on display and in storage, and a steady stream of new arrivals mean there is always a fresh selection to browse. Located in the old library in the Arts Centre, The Central showcases works from established contemporary New Zealand artists. Notable for exhibition openings and art groups, The Central is a great place to stay a while and view sensational art. In Gloucester Street, just down the road from the Isaac Theatre Royal, Fiksate Gallery is a hub for urban and contemporary street art, the only gallery of its kind in New Zealand. The artists behind the space were part of the street art revival that permeated Christchurch’s broken cityscape post-quakes, and are now proud to give a platform to urban street artists, who help make Christchurch a world street art destination.

LEGENDARY INSPIRATION

The sculptor talks about the influences behind his work in central-city Rauora Park. What was the inspiration behind your sculpture Vaka ’a Hina? Vaka ’a Hina was inspired by the legend of Hina and her many voyages to the moon. In the Moana Nui pantheon, Hina is the goddess of the moon, tapa-making, weaving and sharks. She is the matriarch of the famous Māui clan and the guardian of night-time navigation.

Did you always intend to create a sculpture of this scale? Every new sculpture seems to be slightly bigger than the one before. The last sculpture was two metres shorter in height and one metre narrower in overall width. For this one there has been no change in the original size since its inception. How long did you work on this project? It took about two years, beginning in March 2017. How has your experience and rich cultural environment influenced the sculpture? Very highly influenced. I would be denying it if I say it does not. The path I have walked will continue to influence the decisions I make. You have experience across a number of multi-media disciplines, including architecture and sculpture. Is there any discipline you prefer or find yourself dedicating more time to? This is a tough one. My cultural background dictates that all my disciplines will be under the genre ‘art’, which are all governed by a work of art being useful, meaningful and beautiful. If I was an accountant, when the ledger is balanced that is a form of art that it is useful, meaningful and beautiful. At this point in time, I would say I am enjoying the discipline of architecture as a challenge in both practice and an academic sense. Do you have any current projects? Yes, there are a number of new exciting projects I am working on. What’s your favourite piece of art currently in the city? There are a few. To choose just one, it would be STAY by Antony Gormley. Street art

WALL STORIES Christchurch’s rejuvenated inner city has created one of the world’s best canvases for street art. Pulling a positive out of the dramatic transformation of the city landscape forced by the earthquakes, the resulting abundance of large-scale art has made Ōtautahi a gigantic outdoor gallery that’s crammed with photo ops. Things kicked off with the successful Rise (2014) and Spectrum Street art festivals (2015-16) and their ‘Big Walls’ projects. When the annual Spectrum festival wrapped up in 2016, the Street Prints Ōtautahi festival picked up the ball and ran with it, celebrating not only street art but street dance, theatre and music as well. The new festival added to Christchurch’s already impressive collection of large-scale street murals, which continue to delight visitors and have seen Christchurch named one of the world’s street art capitals alongside New York, Barcelona, Berlin and London by Lonely Planet’s Street Art. And it’s not just random tagging, either. The city’s transformation of blank walls into stunning

works of art has featured a veritable roll call of world-renowned street artists including Askew One, Beastman, Flox, Vans the Omega, Fin DAC, Kevin Ledo, ROA, Rone, Anthony Lister, BMD, Eno and more, including local artist Wongi Wilson. You won’t go far in Christchurch before coming across some of Wilson’s artwork – the Christchurch-based graffiti/street artist has painted hundreds of pieces all over the city. Based in the suburb of Sydenham, where he grew up, Wongi played a major part in Christchurch’s post-quake street art boom, with his work as both an exhibiting and commissioned artist popping up on interior and exterior walls around the city, as well as in institutions such as the Canterbury Museum and the CoCA gallery. Using the old-skool spray can method, Wongi mixes styles from photorealism to traditional street art/graffiti, resulting in colourful, spectacular and visuallyarresting pieces that leap off the wall. was the winning entry in a competition that set out to capture the way Christchurch people felt about their city. Winner Hannah Herchenbach, who beat over 400 other entries, has described her immortalised phrase as “a bit of romance in the rubble”, and the inspiring, open-tointerpretation words and the visual treatment they have received have become a favourite with locals. CANTERBURY MUSEUM ATTRACTION

Canterbury Museum is the South Island’s most popular indoor visitor attraction, with displays featuring the natural history of Canterbury, the people who have made it home and the region’s connection to Antarctica. Located in the historic heart of the city since 1870, the museum has a world-class collection, which is showcased in its permanent displays. QUAKE CITY ATTRACTION

Quake City tells stories of heroism, hope and loss from the Canterbury earthquakes – the devastating series of seismic events that rocked the region in 2010 and 2011. Buildings collapsed, roads ruptured and properties were buried under liquefaction – silt and sand that bubbled up from beneath the earth in the shaking. 185 people were killed and several thousand injured in the most devastating shake on 22 February 2011. At Quake City, a special exhibition by Canterbury Museum, visitors will hear first-hand accounts of the earthquakes and see the extraordinary responses of emergency services, international rescue teams and thousands of volunteers. Displays highlight what life was like for Canterbury residents in the aftermath of the earthquakes, when access to power, clean water and sanitation became complicated. Hands-on exhibits explain the science behind earthquakes, and the causes and impacts of liquefaction. A visit to Quake City is essential for visitors who want to understand Christchurch today. Get great views over the city on the Christchurch Gondola and soak up spectacular panoramas of Banks Peninsula, Christchurch city and the Canterbury Plains from Mount Cavendish at the top. Hit the (mini) golf links at CaddyShack City in Woolston, at Riccarton Park Golf Complex’s Scottish-themed course, or at the indoor (Monsters & Zombies) and outdoor (Volcano Park) courses at Ferrymead Golf. Take a trip back in time at Ferrymead Heritage Park’s replica Edwardian township and wander around the historic vehicle displays. Check ahead of time to make sure

you visit on a train day and take the family on an old-skool steam train ride. The central city tram is also worth a ride – jump on to tour in style around the rebuilding CBD and jump out at hotspots like funky New Regent Street, the Arts Centre and Rutherford’s Den for hands-on fun. The museum and the city’s world-famous Botanic Gardens are well worth exploring on any even-slightly-sunny day. WHEEL TIME It’s been called the Amsterdam of the Antipodes, which isn’t a crazy stretch; Christchurch is lined with over 40 kilometres of cycleways and shared trails, meaning there’s a bike path to take you to almost every corner of this wonderful – and mostly flat – city. Coast out to Christchurch’s best inner-city beaches and accompanying ice cream parlours, take to the Port Hills for some thigh-burning views, or hit up the mountain bike trails for an adrenaline-filled romp. If you haven’t

brought your own bike along on your visit, there are several options for hiring one. Save money, save the planet and join us as we explore Christchurch from the saddle. Start by hopping on your bike for a cruise around the central city. Cycling is perfectly paced for taking in the city’s street art, public sculpture and unique parks, and there’s an endless supply of great cafés to fuel your ride. For a tree-lined trip that takes in some of Christchurch’s most idyllic spots, start at the historic Arts Centre and make tracks through

the splendour of Hagley Park, following the cycle trail to Mona Vale’s sprawling grounds. Cruise through Riccarton Bush (go on Saturday for a stop off at the famous farmers’ market, with all its tasty handmade treats), and follow the leafy cycleway to the pretty university campus. Cycling also offers one of the best ways to explore the effects of the Christchurch earthquake. Put your feet to the pedals and cruise down Te Ara Ōtākaro Avon River Trail, which winds alongside the Avon River from Cambridge Village Green through the residential red zone and out to New Brighton. Boards along the route tell the tale of how the environment and the Christchurch community have been affected by the earthquakes. The warmer months are perfect for carefree bike rides along the waterfront causeway from Ferrymead Bridge to Moncks Bay, which has been resurfaced and

replanted and is now mostly a wide, safe expanse for cyclists. The shared-use pathway offers stunning views across the water to New Brighton, and you can stop off in Redcliffs to watch the locals out sailing. Continue on to Sumner for a stroll along the beach or a dip into the water, and reward yourself with a delish artisan ice cream from Utopia Ice. You won’t be alone on your bike - Sumner is a hotspot for long-distance cyclists refuelling on caffeine after coming down from the hills. Whether you’re keen to put in the kilometres or cruise around the inner city sights, there’s nothing quite like exploring by bike, and Christchurch is an easy place to get around on two wheels. What’s Hot Christchurch hits some of the routes to try – whether it’s to discover the city, check out some killer views or just breathe in the great outdoors, there’s a bunch of walks waiting for you whatever your fitness level.

Exploring on foot is one of the best ways to get to know a new city. The city centre is a great place to start, with little dedicated walks that will deliver you to some of Christchurch’s gems. These walks will direct you to take in Hagley Park, Riverside Market, The Earthquake Memorial, The Bus Interchange, Victoria Square, The Margaret Mahy Family Playground, Rauora Park and the East Frame, and many other new places including interesting private developments. There are plenty of places to stop to look and grab a drink or bite to eat along the way. If you’re looking to explore the city’s hidden pockets of nature, start with Te Ara Ōtākaro Avon River Trail. This is a shared use walking and cycling trail stretching from the northeast corner of the city centre to South Brighton. It follows the course of Ōtākaro – the Avon River – winding through parks, wetland, and the ‘residential red zone’. This zone is a former residential housing area which was declared unsuitable for buildings after the Canterbury Earthquakes. It was cleared of houses and allowed to go green with open spaces, wildlife and fruit trees. Boards along the way explain the story of the earthquakes, the city and the red zone. The trail is a bit of

a mixture of purpose-built paths, closed roads and a small section of roadside footpath. The SCAPE Public Art Walkway will take you through the streets and public spaces that display some of the most exciting, inspiring, thought-provoking and different artworks and sculptures in Christchurch. SCAPE also has an app keeping you all up to date with which new artworks to find where. You’ll definitely want to check out the city’s permanent legacy artwork, Seung Yul Oh’s Conduct Cumulus, in the South Quad of the Arts Centre. Hit the artistic triangle of the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, CoCA and The Central at the Arts Centre with a comfy stroll on a Saturday afternoon to check in further with the latest on the city’s art scene – recharge with a coffee and eats at the Arts Centre or the Art Gallery. You might also want to take it upon yourself to do a bit of exploring of your own – our new CBD is well worth a curious meander. Take in the new laneways and hotspots around Little High Eatery, SALT District, The Crossing, St Asaph Street’s Boxed Quarter, and the ANZ and BNZ Centres, or just follow your nose.

SUBURBIA

Explore the ‘burbs, where there’s much to discover. On the Woolston Wharves and River Walk you can get a glimpse at how the Heathcote River would have looked before European settlement, and check out the sites of wharves and jetties where Christchurch’s produce was loaded and unloaded in the early days on this stroll down memory lane. It’s also handily close to The Tannery, where refuelling and retail therapy await. Head for city fave Riccarton Bush to stroll through ancient stands of 600-year-old kahikatea trees set in 12 hectares of

native forest, parkland and historic buildings hidden in the city. If it’s Saturday, hit the Christchurch Famers’ Market too. Looking to stroll? Styx Mill Conservation Reserve near Northwood offers some very pleasant tracks. Hit the Panako Walkway, a breezy 40-minute walk past wetlands and pond, with a viewing platform along the way. There are more wetlands to explore via the Travis Wetland Walk, a circuit track that circumnavigates Burwood’s Travis Wetland Nature Heritage Park, which plays host to a variety of birdlife and vegetation. In Burnside, Jellie Park is well known for its aquatic facilities, but the lake out the back and the pleasant walkways around it are a little bit on the down-low. Head past the pool complex towards the northwest

from Ilam Road. Halswell Quarry always seems bigger than you’d expect – it’s not just a former quarry but home to six interesting sister-city gardens, historic sites, and three permanent orienteering courses. The Quarry Rim Track will take you up and around the dramatic landscape of the quarry face, or take in the sister-city gardens.

THEM THAR HILLS

The iconic Port Hills offer numerous walks and vistas. An oldie but a goodie: the Bridle Path is the granddaddy of Christchurch walks. People have been traversing the thigh-busting steepness of the original route between Lyttelton and Christchurch since the 1850s.

Yes it’s common sense but it can’t be stressed enough that whatever the season, you need to be prepared. Clock the views, then celebrate your triumph portside with a well-earned drink, coffee or bite to eat at one of Lyttelton’s many fine establishments, or nip back the other way over the hill and keep things historical at Heathcote institution the Valley Inn Tavern. Another Port Hills fave, old Māori walking trail the Rapaki Track is an easier graft than the Bridle Path. At the top, take in expansive views over Quail Island and then the city and coastline on your descent. A further 10-minute walk up to the summit of Mt Vernon while you’re here is well worth the extra effort. For the more hardcore adventurous types, The Crater Rim Walkway offers spectacular views of the peninsula along its entire length. We’d suggest tackling the section from the Godley Head car park to the Urumau Reserve Track junction, a two-anda-half-hour jaunt that can start with an exploration of the historic gun emplacement buildings at the heads – digging those hand-dug tunnels! – before producing excellent views on either side along the ridgeline and passing through Buckleys Bay Scenic Reserve. Victoria Park, made famous by Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures, is criss-crossed with an array of trails that reward a casual approach – head up and have a look

to see what takes your fancy. To tick off a landmark, go for the Sugarloaf Circuit, which takes you from the Sign of the Kiwi café up to the prominent transmission tower atop Sugarloaf. An absolute classic, the Godley Head Walkway is a trifling eight-kilometre, three-hour coastline-hugging bonanza of epic ocean horizons, cool baches (yes, you want to take the Boulder Bay detour) rolling hills and, on a clear day, Kaikoura Ranges vistas. Looking for a one-way, uphill excursion? The Christchurch Adventure Park has trails for walkers as well as mountain bikers. Head to the park in Cracroft to check out the sweet village facilities and tackle the uphill trail – it’s steep but the views are awesome and the good news is a ride back down on the chairlift is free, and will drop you off handily placed at their licensed café for a cold Cassels beer on the deck in the sun.

An easy sell, the Waipara Valley Vineyard Trail combines a cornucopia of world-class vineyards, historic farms, and Greening Waipara Biodiversity

Trails, along with the historical steam train at Weka Pass Railway – and it’s all set to the stunning backdrop of the main divide. While not on the Trail, Pegasus Bay and Waipara Hills wineries are worthy detours and considerable rewards for trail-weary walkers. For something more substantial, you’ll need to set aside a day to tackle Mount Herbert, the highest point on Banks Peninsula – but it’s totally worth it for the awesome views. Make a steeper ascent from Orton Bradley Park or a longer, steadier one from the Diamond Harbour settlement; keep an eye on the weather forecast as well as current track conditions at the DOC website. Want the big views? You gotta put in the big effort, and the Mount Grey/Maukatere Track to the summit is a 15.5km show pony that offers some of Canterbury’s finest panoramas (we kid you not!) on the approximately six-hour return hike. If you’re feeling adventurous, take the rougher Red Beech Track on the descent to maximise those outstanding vistas. For maximum spectacle in a short walk, the Castle Hill area (pictured above) has got you covered. The Kura Tawhiti Access Track may only be about 20 minutes in duration, but

grants access to some truly spectacular limestone rock formations. Head off the track to explore at your own pace in this place that has Tōpuni status to local Ngāi Tahu iwi. The Ashley Gorge Loop Track takes in the gently flowing river, mature trees, native bush and birdlife – just an hour’s drive from the city, you can feel like you’ve escaped civilisation altogether and if you get inspired, you might even be keen for a swim in the river. Spend the night at Mid Canterbury’s Mount Somers, which offers a readily accessible taste of backcountry New Zealand. Head for either Woolshed Creek or Pinnacles Huts, which both offer an easy overnight tramp that features impressive rock formations – perfect for a first-timing overnighter, even with kids. For something completely different, head to Cave Stream Scenic Reserve, where the pitch-black labyrinthine namesake cave offers 594 metres of pulsequickening exploration; you’ll have to not mind getting wet and physical and will definitely need a torch. We’re talking headlamp – your phone’s not going to cut it! Pack a lunch and some brews and celebrate your adventure after.

With its seasonally-driven menu, super-cool fitout and superb three-origin blend coffee, this café will quickly become a go-to favourite. Don’t miss popping into Bernard Street’s Little Merchants, for seriously good coffee and guilt-free sweet treats. Portershed in Lincoln Road offers some of the city’s finest vegan fare, including tasty slices and treats.

SOUTH In Sydenham’s boutique shopping centre The Colombo you’ll find Underground Café (an outpost of Underground Coffee Roasters), where slices and cakes meet fine savoury fare alongside famed locally-roasted Underground coffees. For a quickie on the go, they also have an outlet in the centre’s food court pumping out primo brews, including the legendary fair trade and organic offering Beatnik for serious coffee drinkers. The Sign of the Takahe on the corner of Dyers Pass Road and Hackthorne Road has also made a welcome return to the café scene and offers great views with your coffee and brunch, lunch or dinner. You’ll need to head for the hills to find The Handle Bar & Café in Cracroft too, where tasty eats and cool brews on the deck complement the downhill mountain biking and other action adventures at Christchurch Adventure Park.

John’s Mum’s Fudge (or simply JMF to those in the know). When you get to Sumner, take a dive into Ocean Café & Bar, down by the clock tower. Head there early in the day for breakfast or lunch – Ocean’s special eggs bene will have you coming back for more. On Fridays you can sample the very tempting dinner menu alongside a beer or wine. Make tracks and journey through to Lyttelton, where SUPER Restaurant serves up a selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes that’ll keep you fuelled long after you’ve chowed down on it. Or head north to New Brighton and Salt on the Pier. Its unique location (funnily enough on the pier) provides the perfect atmosphere. Coffee has taken Bink Bowler from barista to managing director and back again, as he steps away from management to once again do what he loves – roasting and serving ‘guests’ the best coffee he can at his New Regent Street baby, Belle in central Christchurch. How did you get started in the coffee industry? I was 15 years old. A friend had an espresso coffee. I had a sip and the flavour blew me away so I went to a café and watched the barista and immediately was captivated by the artform of coffee. It was one of those moments I will never forget. I understood the weight of café culture immediately and knew this was going to be my life.

Tell us about arriving in Christchurch and setting up Black & White Coffee Cartel? I came to Christchurch to reset my life – I had a great time in my late teen years and early 20s but at 24 I crashed after a few rough years. I am a recovered alcoholic, I’ve been sober five years and Christchurch was my reset – it is a special place to me, it has provided me with a firm base. When getting sober I had to get back to work – we all have to eat. I saw a CBD full of plots of land being cleared and it was a no-brainer, this was a city of opportunity – each plot of land would house office blocks full of people who need coffee. But aside from that, I knew Christchurch had lost its café culture almost entirely and I thought how special it would be to invest here and with others give the people of Christchurch their café culture back. Now you are back running your own café – what prompted that move? Running the B&W group as the managing director was rewarding but I was getting further away from what I love so much – cafés. When you advance up the ladder in your field, you lose touch as you get further away from the grassroots. So I negotiated a way out of that job and now I sit here content that I have what I want and need – I am so excited to be back at grassroots level, roasting coffee and being with my guests. Do you consider yourself an expert coffee cupper? I’m out of practice from being off the tools for a few years, but yes I am good around the cup – I am a coffee roaster by trade. I was placed second in the 2012 NZ Cup Tasters Championship. I was right into it. Any rules of coffee we should know about? Never feel guilty for ordering a coffee you love. There is a lot of bullshit in coffee these days from a barista’s point of view; the idea of hospitality has been lost in many ‘on trend’ cafes. Coffee is more than a drink, it’s a culture. If you like a

single-shot vanilla latte – good for you, you are a part of café culture, you are a guest! If you drink the finest short black – good for you, just like Mr/ Ms single-shot latte, you are a guest. Be proud of what you drink because that is what you like. Coffee has taken you all over the world – what have been some highlights? It has given me a life beyond my wildest dreams – there are too many to note. I live alone and wake up every day and have my morning coffee and look out to my

While countless French and Italian staples in particular have, of course, become favourites all over the world, a host of other European nations have given one or more famous and epically-tasty gifts to the globe.

ITALY There are several excellent Italian food options in the city. The institution that is Café Valentino has an outstanding range of woodfired pizza, pasta dishes, and a long string of culinary awards. Near the Isaac Theatre Royal you’ll find Francesca’s Italian Kitchen, a Christchurch branch of a legendary Wanaka restaurant that uses local, seasonal produce to create an ever-changing, highly tempting menu of Italian classics. On Colombo Street, Venuti’s modern takes on classic Italian fare such as the Veal Picante are served in a welcoming atmosphere and are accompanied by a collection of excellent Kiwi and Italian wines. The oldest restaurant in Christchurch, Spagalimis Pizzeria, has made itself a local legend thanks to its amazing pizzas. Visit the central-city restaurant in the historic Ironside House to relax with a drink. And new kid on the block Bottle and Stone is opening its doors at The Welder, where the unorthodox pizzeria is serving up taglio-style square pizzas with a mixture of cooked and fresh ingredients.

MEDITERRANEAN For a restaurant-quality dish you can take home, head to Pedro’s House of Lamb and sample the beautiful slow-cooked lamb shoulder, served with a side of scalloped potatoes and salad. Pedro’s uses only the freshest locally-sourced ingredients, and it’s one of the few places in New Zealand where you can dine on export-quality lamb usually destined for overseas. The lamb is cooked in the Mediterranean style – with

rosemary and garlic, and slowly roasted for six hours with Spanish olive oil. That’s how it gets to be so tender.

IRELAND For a taste of the Emerald Isle, head to The Craic Irish Bar in Riccarton Road and sample the Irish Stew. The comprehensive menu is available day and night.

Continue up to The Craft Embassy, an award-winning bar and restaurant with 30 taps of independent craft beer on offer, or tuck into the delicious range of dishes. Two minutes’ walk along the riverfront will bring you to local beer specialist bar and fillery Canterbury Brewers Collective in Riverside Market. North of the city in Edgeware, Bailies Bar and Restaurant is a chilled-out spot for a quiet one after work, drinks before dinner or a big night out with friends. You won’t want to miss Merivale’s No.4 Bar & Restaurant and its epic courtyard and tasty fare, or the craft beer perfection of Nelson-brewed beers and ciders on tap at Merivale Sprig & Fern Tavern, which also does a fine sideline in killer pizzas. Situated at the foot of the Cashmere Hills is Protocol. Enjoy the super sunny courtyard over a refreshing beverage and some great food. VERY CRAFTY What’s Hot Christchurch puts its beer goggles on and tracks down the best places to sample craft beers both local and from further afield. With an ever-expanding offering of brew pubs, beer-focused restaurants and bars, boutique fill stations and bottle stores, we’re a city of beer drinkers confronted by more choice than time to sample. Now ain’t that a First World problem! Ask the brewers and they will say it is their customers’ openness to trying new styles and flavours that drives innovation in the New Zealand industry – as Sprig & Fern head brewer Tracy Banner says, in the UK customers still rock up to the bar and ask for “the lager”, “the ale” or “the bitter”, whereas Kiwi beer drinkers embrace the choices and are willing to try something new. That support for innovation is what marks out New Zealand craft brewers, and means that if there

were a Craft Beer Olympics, we would be on the podium getting medals. So here’s to you, the dedicated beer drinkers out there Three Boys Brewery has made a name for itself with the personal attention it pays to each small-scale brew, carefully mothering each batch until the unfiltered, unpasteurised beer leaves its Ferry Road operation. It’s an approach that’s seen Three Boys rack up awards aplenty, and their liquid gold is exported as far as the UK. Kaiser Brew Garden is one of the newest hospitality hotspots. Located on top of the bustling Riverside Market, it offers a stunning setting where you can meet, mingle and enjoy a brew, speciality G&T or fine wine. The Fermentist is worthy of praise for its commitment to sustainability, and this micro-brewery also just makes great beer! Head brewer Kirsten embraces the company’s motto of ‘explorations and discoveries in fermentation’ to produce a full

range of all your favourite styles, plus an occasional seasonal experiment. Wigram Brewing Co. is a highly-awarded and wellestablished star of the Christchurch scene. The brewery and fillery are open for tours and tastings, gift packs and takeaway riggers. Seasonal releases allow the dedicated brewers to put their own spin on emerging styles, which then join the roster of must-have staples like Mustang Pale Ale and Bavarian Pilsner. Southpaw Brewing Company brewed its first beer, an American Pale Ale called Uncle Charlie, in 2016 and has grown steadily since, adding new seasonal beers and growing the core lineup. The team have won awards for many of their beers at the Brewers’ Guild of New Zealand Beer Awards. Sprig & Fern Brewery continues to produce award-winning craft beers, always with at least two limitededition offerings in addition to its wide range that runs from crisp lagers through pale ales to an English Best Bitter style and a full-bodied Porter. Pomeroy’s Old Brewery Inn is home to brewing aristocracy in the form of the Beer Baroness (Ava Wilson). The inn continues mid-19th Century brewery traditions established by the building’s original owners, Wards Brewery. Civil & Naval, a Lyttelton den of cool, makes a concerted effort to be the biggest little brew bar, paying careful attention to its beer selection. A choice of draft beers rotates daily and others from a host of local breweries are available. The Beer Library is a beer-lover’s haven offering one of the largest selections of take-home craft beer in the region. Volstead Trading Company packs craft beers of all stripes and a super relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy them, with one of the widest selections available in the city. MEET THE ARTISANS Christchurch is blessed with an abundance of farmers’ markets bringing the goods when it comes to fresh, locally-grown produce, artisan goodies and awesome handmade trinkets. Here are our top picks for where to fill the pantry and grab unique food finds. Riverside Market This enclosed seven-day market serves up some of the best eats in town. Located along the hip and happening Oxford Terrace, Riverside is supporting local by bringing a range of small businesses together under one roof. You can pick up craft beers, fruit and veg, cured meats, cheeses and baked treats, or you can pop into one of the cafés, restaurants or bars and indulge as you overlook the Avon River. The Riccarton Market The grandpappy of Christchurch markets is the biggest of its kind in

New Zealand. Running each Sunday 9am – 2pm at Riccarton Racecourse, the market has a wealth of artisan food and beverages, antiques, clothing, arts and crafts and fresh produce among its 200-plus stalls. Christchurch Farmers’ Market Established in 2004, this market has over 60 stalls bursting with vegetables, fruit, meat, cheeses, drinks and plenty of ready-to-eat treats. The market runs each Saturday 9am – 1pm in front of Riccarton House. Lyttelton Farmers’ Market Held every Saturday 10am – 1pm down London Street, this market is full of fresh fruit and veg, plants and delicious foods including deep-fried tempeh, gozleme, baklava, cakes, dolmades, pies, fresh baked bread and so much more. Opawa Farmers’ Market Each Sunday 9am – 12pm, 275 Fifield Terrace comes to life with fresh bread, French-style pastries, free-range eggs, locally-made Italian cheeses, salads, a massive range of organic produce and more. This friendly down-to-earth market hosts well-known and trusted growers. Mt Pleasant Farmers’ Market Next to the beautiful estuary, Mt Pleasant Farmers’ Market is the perfect place to spend your Saturday morning stocking up on goods. You can get your fruit and veg fix with the freshest produce available, or take home some dips, flowers, fresh fish, preserves, herbs, baked goods and cheese. Ohoka Farmers’ Market More than 50 stallholders pull up to this market each Friday

from 9am – 12:30pm and deliver fresh, local, seasonal foods and quality artisan crafts. With loads of hand-baked treats, there’s definitely something for all dietary requirements and palates too, with a world of flavour from Spanish to Indian and Thai. Lincoln Farmers’ & Craft Market Filled with seasonal fruit and vegetables, German baking, pizzas and pastries, sweet treats, and gourmet delicacies including wine, pesto, honey, fruit cordials, cheese, olive oil, hazelnut products and fudge. You can catch this market, and also stock up on some artisan crafts including chopping boards, tea cosies and beeswax reusable food wraps, every Saturday 10am – 1pm on Lincoln’s Gerald Street. New Brighton Seaside Market The beach end of New Brighton Mall is transformed to a foodies’ paradise each Saturday from 10am – 2pm. This community affair boasts a variety of stalls offering handmade crafts, primo local produce and exquisite food. Bask in the sun and groove along to some awesome live entertainment as you satisfy your taste-buds with a waffle, fried chicken, noodles or sweets. Kaiapoi Farmers’ Market This not-for-profit community market focusing on local producers and artisan products is well worth a visit. Each Saturday you can catch up with the friendly and knowledgeable stallholders and grab some goods including eggs, fresh fruit and veg, honey, nuts, baked goods and some funky arts and crafts.
