Description This horseshoe shaped shawl is worked from the bottom up. During the knitting process, the number of stitches is being gradually decreased. For shaping, the center portion of the shawl is worked in short rows: For these rows only, the last 6 sts in every row are not worked, but stay on the needle. Upon completion of the shawl, stitches are closed with the help of a crochet hook. Shawl size may be adjusted by working a greater or smaller number of pattern repeats. If you want a deeper / shallower shawl, increase /decrease the number of short rows before chart 5 is started.

Begin of work With US 10½ – 6.5 mm needle, very loosely cast on 423 sts. Divide the sts as follows: 44 sts – begin (place marker); [ 48 sts – pattern repeat (place marker) ] – work 7 times in all 43 sts. Using an additional marker of a different color, mark the 212th stitch = shawl center. (In Charts 4 and 5, this stitch is marked red.) Knit one row, hereby switching to circular needle US 4 – 3.5 mm. Turn your work and continue working according to chart 1.

(Rows 1 – 32) WS rows: slip first st knit-wise, continue purling all other stitches to end of row. Please pay special attention to rows 15 and 17 in Chart 1. To the right and to the left of the green line, along the edges of the feather motif, there are two symbols printed into the same square. Work both of them.

Chart 2. (Rows 33 – 66) WS rows: slip first st knit-wise, continue purling all other stitches to end of row.

Chart 3. (Rows 67 – 84) Beginning in row 67, the number of stitches per row is decreasing. The last 6 sts of the previous row are to be left unworked (short rows), but stay on the needle. Place marker after these 6 to keep track. RS rows are worked according to chart. WS rows: ssk, purl to last 6 sts. Leaving the last 6 sts unworked, turn work to RS and work next row as shown in chart. (You will work them later in rows 105 and 106.)

Since unworked sts from previous rows are staying on the needle, it is useful to place a marker after the last worked stitch of the row, or, if you have open (split-ring or removable) markers, place a marker directly onto the 6th stitch. Chart 4. (Rows 85 – 106) RS rows are worked according to chart. WS rows: ssk, purl to last 6 sts. Leaving the last 6 sts unworked, turn work to RS and work next row as shown in chart. Row 105. Work from chart, then knit all stitches, picking up all previously unworked stitches from preceding rows. Row 106. Slip the first stitch knit-wise, continue purling all other stitches to end of row. Chart 5. (Rows 107 – 128). WS rows: slip first st knit-wise, continue purling all other stitches to end of row. Binding off. Stitches are closed with a 3.5 mm (E) crochet hook. Stitches are bound off in groups of 3 and 5 sts, joining them with a sc according to the corresponding chart, hereby placing the center stitch on top. Between groups, work crocheted chains off 5 ch ea. Blocking. Weave in all ends. Soak shawl in lukewarm water with a small amount of wool wash or shampoo added. Let sit for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly, remove shawl and slightly press out excess water, but do not wring. Spread out wet shawl on an even surface, forming it into a horseshoe shape. Pin into place all crochet chain “arcs”. Pull out and pin into place the points of all center feather motifs (along green line in chart). Pull out and pin into place the “teeth” between two identical feather motifs (along yellow line in chart). Pull out and pin into place the points of all remaining feather motifs. Leave pinned until completely dry.
