Lusekofte-sque Mitts Mitt pattern by Mary Rourke. Traditional Norwegian motifs from Beth Brown-Reinsel’s Norwegian Lusekofte Socks pattern.

Materials: o Blue Sky Alpacas Sport: MC: 2 balls Denim (#522) CC: 1 ball Natural White (#500) o Sizes US 1.5 (2.5mm) and US 2 (2.75mm) needles for knitting in the round o Scrap yarn o Darning needle Gauge 7 sts = 1 on larger needles in stockinette stitch Abbreviations: MC main color CC contrast color CO cast on St(s) stitch(es) PM place marker K2tog knit two stitches together M1R make 1 increase, right slanting M1L make 1 increase, left slanting PU pick up BO bind off Separate charts have been provided for the right hand and left hand mitts. By knitting one of each you will find that the XoXoXo pattern on the wrist will be symmetrical when the pair is worn. Body: Using MC and smaller needle, CO 48 sts using a provisional CO. PM and join in the round. Rounds 1-15: Knit. Round 16: Change to larger needle and purl (this will be the fold row of your turned cuff). From this point on, follow color pattern per chart. Round 17-29: Knit, joining CC on round 19.

Round 30: Place provisional CO sts on separate needle and fold knitting inward so that the purl sides are touching. Hold needle with CO sts behind working needle and k2tog‌ one st from working needle along with one st from CO needle. Continue in this way to end of round. This round completes your turned cuff. Round 31-49: Knit. Round 50: M1R, knit to end of round. (49 sts) Round 51: K1, M1R, K48, M1L. (51 sts) Round 52-53: Knit. Round 54: K2, M1R, K48, M1L, K1. (53 sts) Round 55-56: Knit. Round 57: K3, M1R, K48, M1L, K2. (55 sts) Round 58-59: Knit. Round 60: K4, M1R, K48, M1L, K3. (57 sts) Round 61-62: Knit. Round 63: K5, M1R, K48, M1L, K4. (59 sts) Round 64-65: Knit. Round 66: K6, M1R, K48, M1L, K5. (61 sts) Round 67: Knit. Round 68/69: K54, place next 15 sts on a piece of scrap yarn to hold for thumb (last 7 sts of round 68 along with first 8 sts of round 69). CO 2 sts using e-loop method and join back into the round, K to end. (48 sts) Round 70-85: Knit. Round 86: Purl. Round 87-98: Change to smaller needle and knit. Turn mitt inside out and graft the live sts on needle down to the back of sts from Round 75.

I did this as follows, though you should do whichever method you prefer: PU the purl bumps from the back of round 75 with a much smaller needle (like a US 0 so as to not stretch the stitches out too much). Fold the top of the mitt down and hold needle with live sts (let’s call this one the front needle) in front of needle with newly picked up sts (and let’s call this the back needle). Cut working yarn to at least 4 times the circumference of the mitt, and thread onto a darning needle. *Insert needle purlwise into first stitch of back needle and drop from needle. Insert needle knitwise into first stitch of front needle, then purlwise into second stitch of front needle. Drop first stitch off of the front needle. Adjust tension.* Repeat from * to * until you are out of sts. Make sure that you don’t pull the yarn too tight when you adjust the tension… you want to make sure the grafted seam stays nice and elastic. Thumb: Place 15 sts from scrap yarn back onto larger needles. PU 2 sts from body of mitt where you had CO the extra sts. PM and join in round. Knit for 8 rounds. BO all sts purlwise. Darn in all ends and enjoy!
