About the pattern: Viking Bag is a small handbag with cables. I made it as a test knit for the viking cable that runs down the middle of the bag.

Difficulty: It is a good beginner’s project in cables, as it is relatively small, but still gives lot of different cable stitches to try out.

Sizes: One size in width, but it is up to the knitter to determine the length.

Materials: Needles size 4mm or bigger (bigger needles and yarn give a bigger bag) Appropriate yarn for the needles (worsted or aran weight is quite good) Handles (bamboo handles 16cm wide was used for the bag in the picture) Satin ribbon for prettification, approximately 1½ meter of a narrow type for winding around the handles, and ½-1 meter of a wider type to pull through the bag.

Gauge: Depends on the yarn and needles you’ve chosen. As it is a bag, the gauge is not so important, but it is vital that the drape is not too loose (so not to let contents fall out), as there is no lining in this bag.

Notes:

k – knit

p – purl

sts – stitch(es)

cn – cable needle

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

2/2RC – place 2 sts on cn to back, k2, k2 on cn 2/2LC – place 2 sts on cn to front, k2, k2 on cn 1/2pRC – place 1 sts on cn to the back, k2, p1 on cn 2/1pLC – place 2 sts on cn to the front, p1, k2 on cn 2/2pRC – place 2 sts on cn to the back, k2, p2 on cn 2/2pLC – place 2 sts on cn to the front, p2, k2 on cn border sts – always knit first and last sts on all rows

Pattern: Cast on 54 sts. Setup row (WS): k1, p2, k2, p4, k2, p2, (k4 p4) 3 times, k4, p2, k2, p4, k2, p2, k1. Now begin cable pattern from diagram. Odd rows are RS and even rows are WS. © Lykkefanten 2008 www.lykkeogloekker.blogspot.com

Work the 16 pattern rows 6 (or more, if a deeper bag is wanted) times. Work row 1 in pattern once more, and work a finishing row identical to the setup row written above. Bind off and weave in ends.

Sew sides of bag together, but only sew ž of the way. The left-over opening ensures that the bag will be easy to get into.

Block the bag lightly before fastening the handles. This will show of the cables better.

Cut narrow satin ribbon in half and wrap each half around a handle. Secure with tape (or other adhesive). Sew or crochet the handles to the top of the bag. Pull wide ribbon through the ribbing in the bag and tie with bow.

Happy knitting Karen S.L. a.k.a. Lykkefanten
