PORTFOLIO OF WORKS 2009 - 2013 MSc Landscape Architecture

TELL ME A STORY Every space can be read like a story. The story consists of the character of the space, it’s history, landscape elements, morphology and much more. What makes landscape architecture interesting is the knowledge to connect all these elements, understand it and make something new from it. I am a young passionate landscape architect that loves to read the space and it’s stories. I like to upgrade existing stories and create new ones so that other people can read them when they are using the space. That means creating spaces that are readable and meant for everyone. I want the spaces I create to be claimed by the people. Spaces, like stories, are for people.

Tiger Habitat 2013 Built project

Participated as an landscape architecture intern at Landart. Involved from concept design to the construction. Responsible for masterplan devolopment, planting plan and viewpoints construction.

location collaboration

ZOO Ljubljana, Slovenia LA Izidor Habjanič, Gašper Habjanič

The project designs a part of Ljubljana ZOO as a habitat for a pair of Siberian tigers. The designed area primarily fits the tigers but also allows the visitors to observe the tigers without disturbing them. The new tiger habitat was planted with plants native to the tiger’s natural environment, but also in a way that suggests visitors that they have entered the “Asian part” of the Ljubljana ZOO.

Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica), are the world’s largest cats. They live primarily in eastern Russia’s birch forests, though some exist in China and North Korea. Set of plants was drawn together after thorough research of vegetation of the Amur-Heilong region, which is a natural habitat for siberian tiger, and consultations with experts for wild cats at Ljubljana ZOO.

ZOO Ljubljana is one of the few woodland ZOOs in Europe. Existing habitat mainly consist from spruce and ash forest, which covers 4000m². To create more domestic habitat for the tigers, plants were added (listed on the previous page) according to characteristics similarity, resistance of a plant and other. For the purpose of setting the fence and meeting the safety measures some of the existing trees were cut down.

Competition for historic town center restoration 2013 Competition entry, Honorable mention Participated as part of the landscape architecture design team. Further worked on concept design of river banks, main street and town wall promenade.

location

Town Ĺ kofja Loka, Slovenia

The project was a restoration of the medieval town center of Ĺ kofja Loka and its banks. The project suggested a circular path through three levels of the medieval town center - castle, town and the riverbanks. The main idea was to connect the disconnected old town center with the surrounding city. Connection between old and new town parts of Skofja Loka town was made possible by renewed traffic structure, public spaces and parks, urban furniture and new housing was designed.

The competition solution was trying to make the river banks and the river more approachable for the users. The connections between the river and the rest of the town are being established by creating new land use programs, designing new public green spaces, pathways and viewpoints from the riverbanks.

One of the most recognizable attributes of the main street are the facades of the buildings on the square. To enhance the playfulness and liveliness of the street, design solution pays close attention to the choice of pavement and its materials. Water-permeable paving is selected because it has microclimatic advantages and allows water circulation. It is also made of local material - river gravel from the Sora river.

The goal of the workshop was to test the provided site of Vinjole for the land use of a new cemetery which would operate for the coming 30 years. This workshop included research of spatial capabilities on a slope with 10% inclination. One of the main obstacles was overcoming the terrain to meet the demands for grave placement. The end result was concept design of a cemetery with maintenance facilities and roads, road structure for visitors, grave plots and columbaria with pricesly calculated number of graves and parking area. The concept of the cemetery was based on a main road leading visitors from the main entrance to the chapel where the farewell ceremony takes place.

Area of Stud Farm Lipica, Slovenia prof. dr. Janez Marušič, asist. Nadja Penko Seidl Mojca Črnič, Tina Zaponšek

Lipica is the oldest European stud farm continuously breeding one of the oldest cultural horse breeds – the lipizzaners. As such it has a remarkable significance as a cultural, historical and natural heritage for Slovenia and Europe. The purpose of the management plan was to ensure development and revitalization of the cultural landscape and landscape elements of the farm and its influence area.

Management plan ensures the preservation of Stud Farm Lipica as a whole – a unified and functional area. It excludes undesired land uses, and supports development of new pastures, revitalization of cultural landscape and its elements. It conserves existing farmland and its structure which is important for the image of the cultural landscape of the Lokev filed. The beautiful surroundings of the stud farm Lipica and field Lokev are one of the reasons people migrate to this place. To ensure the continuation of traditional land use, an important topic of the plain was also care for the local people and their environment.

Field Lokev, Slovenia prof. dr. Davorin Gazvoda

Influence of the stud farm can be well seen in the surrounding area of Lipica. One of the most interesting nearby areas is Lokev field. Intensive land use formed distinctive cultural landscape. Local population collected stones scattered in the fields to build stone walls which surrounded sinkholes, fallow and unproductive fields, as well as marked plots ownership. This practise produces an interesting field pattern. Through these, riding trails and pastures were made that connected Lipica stud farm and village Lokev.

4

Project solution suggested reestablishment of the former functions of the Lokev field. The existing enclosed area of the stud farm was connected with its former area through establishment of new field roads. Some overgrown areas were cleaned of shrubs and trees and reestablished as pastures. New programs are connecting and filling the missing program of Lipica stud farm.

Town Kranjska Gora, Slovenia prof. dr. Davorin Gazvoda

Mobility and easy access to distant places caused people to change their habits and their view on how they organize their touristic visits and sightseeings. Town of Kranjska Gora is located on the border of Triglav National Park. National Park is well known for its natural beauties, the highest Slovenian mountain Triglav (which bears national importance for Slovenians) and Julian Alps. Area is well known for its panoramic hiking routes. In early days of mountaineering tourism, many cabins and accommodation facilities were established where visitors could overnight.

pass Vršic

31

Rise of mobility and shorter traveling time have caused one day visits to become more popular. That meant a decline of visits in traditional touristic areas and a decline in demand of accommodation.

Form research

The task of this project was to renovate the much needed connection of the area with the town Kranjska Gora and mountain pass Vršič. Furthermore, to renovate the area and to establish sustainable recreational program of the area. The main inspiration of the project was topography of the space, panoramic views of mountains, ever changing river patterns and the Legend of the Goldhorn.

Image: Rozman S.

Degraded area of former climate resort was renovated and the program of alpine health resort extended through the valley of lake Jasna. To separate the pedestrians from the motor traffic, a sightseeing trail with many panoramic viewpoints was proposed. Finally, the area was named Goldhorn Story Road.

Influence of the space

Urban landscape 2010 Academic work: group project, 7th semester, Erasmus exchange programme Worked on concept development, design and model.

location mentor collaboration

City of Hannover, Germany prof. dr. Martin Prominski, asist. Verena Butt Cindy Wittek, Isabell Garling

After the Word War II architect Hildebrecht constructed a system of broad roads that connected into city ring around Hannover. For those times overdesigned roads turned out to be practical once technology started to develop. The road became one with the city when it grew around it. Current situation is a typical one. The road became a borderline between new and old part of the city Hannover. The main goal of the project was to find a solution to overcome the mental and physical barrier of the ringroad in the city and connect the old and the new part of the city.

N

34

Analysis of user’s movement through space

The solution of the ringroad barier can be explained trough teh “Inside out” koncept. Space for motor vehacles was partialy taken away and given to the padestrians. On both sides of the road, one of the lines was taken away to create a public space inside the city ring.

image: Cindy Wittek

Trough design of new public space with basic landscape elements we try to shape spaces that would be multifunctional and usefull on dayly bases.

The image shows the green part of the ring with its surrounding features.

Town Ilirska Bistrica, Slovenia doc. pr. Ana KuÄ?an, doc. pr. Tatjana Vidmar Capuder, asist. Eva Zupan botanical garden

Through time, the town of Ilirska Bistrica lost its importance. The collapse of the industry and departure of the military left the city with many degraded spaces. The task of this project was to restore and reconnect the town of Ilirska Bistrica trough potential, currently degraded, empty spaces. Topography, shape of the space, urban fabric and the town’s rich history were taken into account. Degreded areas were connected trough change of traffic system, establishment of new residential areas, restoration of two city centers and a new green system which goes along the river. main road

The city is situated between hill GradiĹĄÄ?e and floodplain of the river Reka. Its location has great landscape and adventure potential. One of the ways of connecting the whole space was a plan for construction of a new bypass. The new road rid of the old city road of its traffic which means new urban programs can be formed in the city. The network of rivers was a great opportunity to create new roads and landscape design that would connect small dispersed areas. Connection of cultural heritage (river channels, river mills, military buildings) and natural heritage can offerd a good opportunity to once again establish a healthy lively city.
