Born in Illinois Chicago and raised in South Korea Sophia Kim was always surrounded by the new cultures and environments. She learned about different cultures while she was traveling to various places from her young age. She had a chance to live in New Zealand for two years when she was ten years old, and this opened her eyes to have a broader perspective and deeper understanding of different cultures. Her love of interiors started from her young age. She was obsessed with colors and liked to organize from her young age.Her habit of organizing the space made her learn how important our surrounded environment is to change our lifestyle and behavior. She reorganized furniture whenever she was in a bad mood or the needed for the new changes in herself. Interior design became as her habit throughout her life. She never thought of becoming an interior designer until she was twenty years old but she realized her dream to become an interior designer and came to Academy of Art University to follow her dream. She likes to see things in different perspective. She always strives to stay creative and spend her most of her hours with thinking. She believes the best part of the interior design is the interaction between the people and space and also the ability to build your two-dimensional ideas into three-dimensional space.

HIDE AND SEEK
Hide - and – seek
noun a children’s game in which one or more players hide and the other or others have to look for them.
A L L A N I M A L S P L AY H I D E A N D S E E K
The concept for this project was Hide and Seek. I compared the company’s mission to the “Hide and Seek” play. National Geographic Society funds more than 300 research, conservation, and exploration projects.Company’s mission is all about exploring and understanding our human story, critical species, and our living planet. I compared the nature as the “hiding object” and National Geographic as the “seeking company,” looking for the beautiful aspects of nature. National Geographic have been taken a role as an educational company by continuously discovering the unknown aspects of nature. The company has various media contents which convey their surprising discoveries.
Hide and Seek play is the primary game which we start to play from when we were tiny. Hide and Seek play requires to use all our five senses to win the game and help us develop our cognitive system. Throughout the interior, I tried to make this space as inspirational and educational space like National Geographic does to us.

Q. What was the main idea of this space? The concept for this area was Hide and Seek, so I tried to provide some private workplace to give the feeling of hiding. I came up with the beehive because the color of Nat Geo’s logo reminded me of the hive and the honeycomb.
Q. What was the concept for the ceiling lighting? For the overall office space, I wanted to create cove lighting. So, I made the wooden frame in a folded shape and installed cove lighting on the side of the inside frame. At the middle of the frame, I placed the customized honeycomb shaped pendant light fixtures which can make this entire lighting piece to look like the large frame containing the art piece in the middle. The detail of the pendant light could be only seen from the underneath and by looking up from the workspace area, so I can say that the overall idea for the lighting came from my Hide and Seek concept. From a distance, people can only notice the black shade of the pendant which makes this lighting not too overpowering in this space.

Q. What was the reason for creating uneven height partition for workspace? I wanted to add sharpness to space.Angled, geometrically shaped partition adds dynamic to the office space and also combines well with project’s Hide and Seek concept.
Q. What other things have you considered to emphasize your concept? I also customized the office desk, shelving in a shape of dripping honey to emphasize the honeycomb idea. In front of the window, I installed moveable shelving in honeycomb shape to give more function and aesthetic to this space.

Q. What was the main idea for the customized bookshelf? To add more function in the workspace, I created the bookshelf that was inspired by the details of honeycomb. I wanted to abstract the shape but still wanted to give the feeling of the honeycomb. So, I abstracted the hexagon shape into simple circular shapes. I thought what makes honeycomb special was the delicate details. So, I used the gold mesh which is similar to the shape of honeycomb’s yellowish detail.By using gold mesh, space can remain transparent but at the same time, adds more glamor to space.

Q. What was the main idea of the space? Entire space was designed in a concept of the modern interpretation of beehive.I mostly used the wood material so that space can provide warm and tailored look.
Q. Can you explain the door design? I applied National Geographic’s logo to the entrance door which connects stairs and exhibition area. The purpose was to create the experience for the visitors which they can think as they are entering the Nat Geo’s world by opening this door and coming into the exhibition area. To make a balance between the delicate details of the ceiling and space, I used simple built in wall LED strip lighting.
Q. Can you explain the ceiling? For the ceiling, I used hexagonal shaped wood tiles and created the logo of the National Geography.Exhibition space is covered with the organically shaped structured ceiling. The ceiling is designed in a shape of elephant hat from the story of The Little Prince.I thought the “Elephant hat” structure best exemplifies the Hide and Seek concept. This organically structured wood ceiling beam not only adds the visual impact but also creates flexibility with heating and cooling system.

Q. Can you explain your design reason for choosing glass material for the wall? A. This rendering shows the view from the hallway of workspace area. The organically structured ceiling of exhibition space was the key design for this floor, so I wanted this structure to be visible from the workspace area. I used two materials for the wall which are the wood and the glass so that the exhibition space and the workspace are structurally separated but sharing the design experience.
Q. Can you explain the lighting idea for the hallway? Dome shaped rounded half sphere lighting was placed in tilted shape as if the lighting is hiding in the ceiling. Alongside the hallway, I made the lighted frame in National Geography’s logo shape so that it can be used to display photography.

Deconstructed Framed Artwork in Workspace Lighting for the workspace is structured in a shape of artwork surrounded by the wooden frame. The Wooden frame is structured in two layers so that the light bulbs were installed between these layers. Arrays of hexagonal shaped pendant lighting were made in a shape of honeycomb pattern. The shade is designed as partially lifted which makes inside hexagon details partially visible.

HISTORY OF MISSION BAY Mission Bay was located inside of 500 acres of salt marsh and lagoon. At that time, this place was the natural habitat for animals. At the beginning of the mid-1800s, there was an attempt to make this site suitable for building, and Mission Bay was used as trashing area to deposit refuse from building projects and debris from the 1906 earthquake. After Marsh got stabilized, the area quickly turned into industrial district. In 1850, this area was used for shipbuilding and repair, butchery and meat production. An addition of the railroad, Mission Bay became the home to shipyards, canneries, a sugar refinery and various warehouses. In 1998, by Board of Supervisors, mission bay was selected as the redevelopment project. After this, it has quickly evolved into a wealthy neighborhood of luxury condominiums, hospitals, and biotechnology research and development.

PROGRAM
CONCEPT
ROMANTIC
C H A O S
The concept for this space was “Romantic Chaos.” Client Tony wanted this space to be classic, modern which also can show his “Farm to table” concept throughout the interiors. To achieve his goal for this area, I imagined the photography of picnic space with having outdoor string lighting all over the wood picnic table. But to take this idea into a modern design, I added the destruction concept to the picnic scenery. I imagined shadow as the destructive method for the flooring and mesh ceiling as a destructive method to the ceiling.
I believed that the word “Romantic” would lead the design to look classic, and the word “Chaos” would lead the design to become as modern space. The reason I selected these two different meaning words together was that I believed the chaotic scene could look romantic when you stop and stare the chaotic moment. The purpose of designing this space was to create the modern version of the traditional picnic space.

SKETCHES
Q. What was the purpose of the design for this space? The space was designed as modern interpretation of outdoor picnic environment. White marble tiles and gray tree shadow patterned tiles were used for the flooring. Phantom of Opera mask shaped meshed ceiling, corset column lighting and glass partition with corset detail were added to space. I imagined modern picnic environment with hanging string lights in outdoor area. Gray tree shadows were used on the marble tile to create a relaxing atmosphere like we are resting in the shadow.
Q. What other customized designs did you add in this space? For the glass partition for the dining area, I incorporated corset detail to the partition so that the partition could have more romantic elements. I used rustic wood lumber picnic table for the dining table to complete the picnic scenery. I used corset structure as column lighting and added the yellow gold strip to emphasize the details. I used pendant light with hanging plants so that these could look like it’s been pulled out from the wire mask mesh ceiling. On the black wall, I created wall mounted lighting piece with transparent glass in the shape of flowers to enhance the romantic mood of this space. A

Q. What are the design features to focus in this space? For the flooring, I combined pure white marble flooring with tree shadow patterned marble flooring. It’s a tree shadow without real tree existing. The shadow creates visual impact but also at the same time this creates an illusion that the fruits and vegetables are directly from the tree. For the reception desk, I created modern looking white angular table but also added the lifted hanging ceiling which resembles the shape of raised table cloth.

Q. What was the inspiration for this area? I was inspired by the corset detail sketch drawing. To show the chaos, I deconstructed the frame in the letter of “Wine and drinks. “I made the sketch of corset into a three-dimensional structure to create the experience of walking into the art piece when people shop the wine.

At any time, she may have up to three employees work from inside her home, the 3rd floor unit, on various projects. Maria needs an office space for herself and up to 2 other employees with laptops (see project program for detailed requirements.) Maria has expressed interest in having a small container garden to grow her own herbs, tomatoes, or squash. Maria will serve as the landlord to the low-income tenant in the 1st floor unit. Simona is 16 years old. She is actively involved in sports and plays the guitar. Simona earns good grades in school. It is common for classmates to come to the house for study sessions multiple times during the school year. Simona’s bedroom needs a dressing table with vanity mirror and power outlet. She also needs a study area and space for laptop computer and small printer. Simona is sensitive to chemicals and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Frank is 75 years old. He is still active but his needs are changing. He walks with a cane. Kneeling and stooping have become more difficult for him in recent years. Frank is a member of the IACC (Italian American Citizens Club) and goes to events and meets old friends for breakfast weekly. Frank has glaucoma and has difficulty differentiating between colors with similar values. He needs good bedroom lighting and clear pathways.
2nd Floor Unit: Jason is a single dad with twin girls, Chloe and Aimee. Jason works as a special education teacher for mild to moderate special needs students. Jason coaches little league and enjoys golf. Jason also hunts during deer and duck seasons. Chloe and Aimee are 12 years old. They share a bedroom. Chloe excels in schools and is active in sports. She plays on a traveling soccer team year around. Aimee has cerebral palsy; she uses a wheelchair for mobility and she’s visually impaired. However, she’s intelligent, speaks well, and communicates with the assistance of a sight/auditory assistive device. She has difficulties with fine motor skills. A therapist comes to the home to help Aimee about two times a week. Aimee enjoys music of all kinds, from opera and rock, to country and pop.
1st Floor Unit: A tenant will rent the 1st floor unit from Maria Mariotto. This unit will be rented through San Francisco’s Section 8 and Rental Assistance Program for low-income tenants. The concept for the first floor was “Exposed (to nature).” Client for this level is for the low-income household and to make this space available at a lower price, I thought about sustainable design. Even it’s the home for the low-income family, I thought they still deserve the house which can provide them with high-quality life. The sustainable design cuts down the energy use and also, it’s aesthetically pleasing. Creating window walls will make this house available to use passive heating and cooling by the letting the sunlight coming through the window.

The concept for the second floor was “Deconstructed nature.” In this level, I focused on to create ADA qualified space and sustainable environment. So, I used the texture and shape of the deconstructed nature to create the modern space. To help Aimee who was having cerebral palsy, I incorporated the sound of nature for each room which can make her easy to know which room she is entering. Incorporating sound of nature was also part of deconstructing the element of nature.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN: MARIOTTO RESIDENCE
LIVING ROOM
N
The concept for the third floor was “No dilemma.” In this level, I focused on to create perfect space especially for senior which creates no dilemma or difficulties. The dilemma is the theme of the story which I want to incorporate throughout this space. Frank is the member of the Italian-American society. So, I used stained glass lighting to create the feeling of an old Italian cathedral. After the dilemma is over, our mind comes out from the darkness and becomes brighter. So, I thought of the tunnel as the image of my concept “No dilemma.” Customized furniture and lighting will convey the theme of the dilemma. The overall space will convey the image of “brightness” which equals to “No dilemma” state by making large window walls, window seating and use of the sustainable material. These solutions will help Simona suffering from chemicals and VOCs.

Christian Louboutin is one of the most famous shoe designer in the world. His shoes are best known for the red colored sole and his creatively designed unique shoes. He said that he hates the concept of the comfort. He was the designer who made high heel popular.

DEDICATION This portfolio is dedicated to my family, friends, and instructors that have helped me shape myself into who I am now. If it weren’t for them, my work would not be what it is now. Their guidance and support have helped me make my portfolio an abundance of gorgeous design and art, for that, I will be forever grateful.
