Poggiopaoli 2011 Ciliegiolo Rosso di Brenno Scansano, Tuscany wine from Italy Drinking window: Dark ruby-red. A ciliegiolo-typical white pepper nuance complements bright red cherry and tar aromas and flavors. Flinty and bright, with lively acidity extending the flavors through a suave, long, smoothly tannic finish. A very promising effort. Chalk up another outstanding wine from the ciliegiolo variety. Giovanni Chiappini 2011 Cabernet Franc Lienà Castagneto Carducci, Tuscany wine from Italy Drinking window: Dark red. Perfumed, flinty notes of red rose and violet complicate candied red cherry and raspberry on the knockout nose. Sweet and creamy on entry, then savory in the middle, with the red fruit flavors marked by a strong graphite quality. The flinty perfume carries through on the smooth, long finish. Outstanding cabernet franc. The “lienà” name of this specific lineup of Chiappini’s wines derives from his father’s name, Leonardo.

Casa di Terra 2011 Bolgheri Mosaico Bolgheri, Tuscany wine from Italy Drinking window: Bright ruby. Clean, fresh, minty aromas of dark berries, violet, fresh herbs and tar. Impressively light on its feet, with lively plum and blackberry flavors supported on the back by suave tannins. The label says 14.5% alcohol but I couldn’t tell. The name mosaico refers to the mosaic of grapes once used to make this wine. Ian D'Agata, December 2014 Š 2014 Vinous Media
