Competition to Design Artwork for Crispin Orthotics

Competition This is a competitive brief, offered exclusively to HE students at Leeds College of Art. Students are asked to create a design for Crispin Orthotics’ orthoses. The designs are aimed at the adult population, ie people aged 18 years and older. The winning design will be awarded £150, the second prize £100 and the third prize £50. Further winning designs may also be awarded cash prizes. Background Crispin Orthotics is a manufacturing company based in Morley, Leeds. The Company makes orthoses (ie splints and braces) which are worn by patients to prevent or correct deformity and promote or improve function of the affected areas. At Wellfield House, the company’s base, clinicians assess patient needs so that technicians can manufacture bespoke orthoses. The technical team manufacture the products using plastic, carbon fibre, silicone, fabric, leather and metal. Products manufactured by Crispin Orthotics can be seen at www.crispinorthotics.com A short video demonstrating an orthosis can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrFQo1BfHKw

A presentation made to students on Wednesday 3 March can be seen on estudio at http://estudio.leeds-art.ac.uk/mod/folder/view.php?id=14485 Students who were unable to attend the presentation may submit designs Some designs which are currently available for use on orthotics are pictured below.

The Brief Students are asked to create designs which will be used on silicone or plastic devices, such as those below:

Designs for silicone can be created with high detail however with the plastic devices the transfer has a tendency to bleed into the material therefore reducing the visibility of fine lines. Students are asked to complete an expression of interest, with two images of designs, each one no more than 1 MB. Up to three expressions of interest may be submitted by each student, with a total of six images. The expression of interest may identify the area of the body the design is aimed at and add any written details to help to visualise the finished product. Designs for the head should be square; designs for limbs should be portrait and designs for the torso should be landscape.

What are we trying to achieve? To create attractive designs which will appeal to young people and adults and which will make a difference to the experience of wearing an orthosis. Schedules and Deadlines Interested students should complete and return the attached Expression of Interest, with two images of designs. Each image must not exceed 1 MB. Up to three expressions of interest may be submitted by each student. Expressions of Interest should be emailed to Sharon.heleine@leeds-art.ac.uk by 5.00pm on Friday 1 April. Sharon will collate and send all entries to Mark Thaxter, Managing Director of Crispin Orthotics on Monday 4 April. The winning designs will be chosen by Crispin Orthotics and the awards announced in April.
