Initial research question:
How has feminism changed with each wave? Refined research question:
How has western feminism changed in the last 150 years? Sophie Hargreaves Context of Practice Level 6
Essay question from level 5
How has the role of women changed in the last 100 years? Although I have chosen a very similar topic, rather than just looking at how the role of women changed, I am investigating why it changed. I am interested in the events that spurred women into action and how these events had an effect on western society. Sophie Hargreaves Context of Practice Level 6
Brief Overview of each ‘wave’
First wave: Women’s suffrage. There are accounts of it from 1830
but The Women’s Social and Political Union (the Suffragettes) wasn’t formed until 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst.

Brief Overview of each ‘wave’
Third wave: Began in the 1990s and aims for gender equality
within a currently patriarchal society. Is a movement of intersectional solidarity and does not just fight for the rights of white, middle-class women.

Initial thoughts for essay structure:
Introduction • Basic overview
• What is feminism? • What has it achieved so far? • Why is it important? • Definitions of terminology – e.g ‘white privilege’, ‘gender identity’

Initial thoughts for essay structure:
Main Body • Split into three sections, first wave, second wave and third wave • When did each wave occur? • What triggered each wave? (discuss social/political/economic factors) • How successful has each wave been?/How much has society actually changed? Sophie Hargreaves Context of Practice Level 6
Initial thoughts for essay structure:
Conclusion
•
Brief summary of each wave
•
Compare success of each wave – is this entirely down to the movement?
•
Compare how each wave differs – why?
•
Will the movement ever reach it’s ultimate goal? Will we ever learn from history?

Practical Idea
Expand on practical from level 5 to create an information/activity pack about feminism. Sophie Hargreaves Context of Practice Level 6
Practical Idea
The aim of the pack would be to educate a younger audience on the importance of gender equality and the history of feminism/the women’s movement. Sophie Hargreaves Context of Practice Level 6
Practical Idea
The pack would include a booklet about each wave of feminism and various activities inspired by third wave diy culture. The booklet would have visual examples of feminists from each wave, e.g. girl punks from the 1970s or the Suffragettes.
Sophie Hargreaves Context of Practice Level 6
Practical Idea
The audience/age range will be really important to consider when making my images because some of the content is quite mature. The content about second wave feminism probably wouldn’t be appropriate nor understandable for people under age 10.
Sophie Hargreaves Context of Practice Level 6
Practical Idea
Part of the pack will be a ‘make your own’ activity.
My initial idea for this is a ‘make your own patch’ activity which would include templates and instructions.

Practical Idea
When making patch designs/templates, the audience will once again be really important to consider. A lot of the examples I have come across so far have been quite expletive which wouldn’t be appropriate for a younger audience, Sophie Hargreaves Context of Practice Level 6

Feedback
• Do you think the practical aspect of the project is feasible with
the time we have left? Should I be more ambitious? • Any suggestions to improve my proposal – is there anything that I haven’t considered?
• Should I be doing more image analysis? (even though I am exploring a social issue, has it come too far from illustration? – does this matter?) • Any references you think I should look at?
