‘Bassmental’ Personal Brief This is one of my smaller personal brief for extended practice. I was commissioned by a friend to design a poster for an up and coming DJ gig. This wasn't ever going to be one of my main briefs and so I aimed to do this in a quick turn around. Deadline: 10/04/18 Aim - (1-2weeks production) The Brief: Design a poster (standard A3 size) intended to advertise a debut DJ event. The piece must feature the ‘Bassmental’ title as well as the name of the performers, and appropriately reflect and respond to the music genres of techno, disco and house.
• Initial ideas. - The client was insistent on the design featuring a house - which has been their current logo up to promote their music until now, so they wanted this design to be in keeping with that theme.
• The ‘Bassmental’ title was to be prominent
• Begun playing around with the house in various compositions - trying to incorporate in with the text in some way. • I like two houses - upside-down version mirroring one another. I also like the basement concept - one underground. - perhaps different colours?
• Wasn't really given any other specifics by my client so decided to just start drawing some roughs with the intention of getting feedback.
• Use of strong lines / bold /simple imagery - quite grungy
• Digital Roughs
• I created a series of roughs digitally so the client could get a more realistic idea of what i had in mind for the final piece. - i think it was easier for him to picture this finalised rather than the sketches!
• he client really likes the composition of the house with the path leading upside down. - and the outlined house.
• Also liked the disjointed type which i had fun playing around with.
• Client didn't really like the red - they prefer a black and white or muted tones theme. - even though i think the red brings something to the image, i have to go with what the client prefers.
• Some finalised versions of the poster. - I ended up creating quite a few example for my client to choose from. - some incorporating subtle additions of colour and distorting lines. I kept the aspects of the original roughs that he really liked - the type and the house.
• He was keen on the inclusion of texture and showed interest in all examples - but was most enthusiastic about the incorporation of perspective. We both agreed that this design was the most stand out.
• However - I do really like the manipulation and incorporation of type on the other examples.
Chosen final image. • The client was really happy with the final design which I was pleased with. Although i would have made some different decisions about colour and composition, my main focus was creating a design which reflected what the client wanted.
• I like my use of perspective and would have maybe played around more if I had time.
• I was a bit nervous about working with a friend and getting feedback on my designs. In the past I've never have much confidence in my work and worry too much what people think! but i’m definitely learning to let people in on the designing process and that this is all part of the job. Having a great response the finished outcome was very encouraging and has given me more confidence to approach clients something I know that I will have to do in the very near future!
• Although it’s quite removed from my usual style of work, and not directly moving my practice forward, it’s still been an enjoyable experience. It’s also broadened my interest in poster design - working with type and incorporating this into my composition was quite fun and interesting.
