Book Cover Design; Process & Final
- Initial Cover design ideas.
- I decided to feature the design around one of my favourite characters - the astronaut, after beginning to play around digitally with compositional roughs
- you can be anything you want to be? - imagery relates to that statement - reach for the stars kind of idea‌
- Considered putting words with the
imagery but decided to save that for the content of the book.
- Rocket design exploration - simple / cartoon like not physically accurate
- The cover needed be coherent with the exaggerated / caricature quality of the characters
-
-
Further compositional roughs - found it diďŹƒcult to decide on the perspective‌?
i like the character enlarged and focused, but then it is perhaps too similar to the inside imagery.
I think the rocket ship entering from the corner works well. - draws the viewer into the image.
-
Final composition outline
Really like the rocket flames - help to frame the image and add necessary detail.
Creating the elements separately like with the characters.
kept the same aesthetic - gouache/ink for rocket.
desided digitally colouring flames would be better - more refined edges - don't want to loose detail.
-
When all the elements were scanned in i played around with size and scale.
Wrestled quite a bit with the colour scheme - wanted to keep it minimal but contrasting enough for each element to stand out against one another. its the front cover so it is important that i really consider this decision.
Added some mono print texture to areas of the image that I felt were lacking - this complimented the quality of the paint really nicely.
I didn't want to over compliment the imagery - but adding some scattered stars really helped to bring it to life.
Type experimentation‌ debated the size and placement quite a lot. Needs to stand out but not be the focus - rockets quite small.
Final Cover Design -
Overall, I am really pleased with the cover design.
Enlarging the earth helps to balance out the image
The simplistic colour scheme works well.
Regarding the function of the cover, I believe that it does what is intended. I would hope that young children will find it striking and intriguing.
I deliberated on a title for quite some time, but I settled on ‘When you grow up, you could be‌’ I wanted it to be direct and think that this sums up the content in one sentence.
- The start night continues round to the back cover.
