Brit marling copy

A Brit Marling Film Collection The Brief
Design and illustrate a series of three posters in response to selected indie films starring the talented actress Brit Marling. The designs will be inspired by key themes and visual metaphors running throughout each narrative. Flexible on chosen media, but visual consistency must be kept throughout. Chosen films • Sound Of My Voice

• Eye Origins

• Another Earth

Another Earth In Another Earth, a new planet appears in our skies, and eventually it becomes clear that this is a duplicate of our own world — possibly with copies of all of us on it. Rhoda Williams, a young woman who killed a mother and child in a drunk driving accident, dreams of going to this other Earth and meeting another version of herself. Meanwhile, she befriends the husband of the woman she killed, by pretending to be there to clean his house. themes: parellel world - metaphor for Rhodas internal state the world becomes a metaphor for forgiving yourself for your mistakes. • Concept Ideas - I wanted to focus on the idea of two planets - but bring some visual metaphors into the image.

• Visually - thought I want to use a strong perspective looking out from one earth to another.

• looking at the other earth as an escape - its held up on a pedestal - the idea of the hands holding up the earth - in the film they aspire to what they would be / a better place, a better self.

Sound of My Voice California couple Peter and Lorna set out to make a documentary meant to expose a charismatic cult leader named Maggie (Brit Marling) as a fraud. Maggie claims to be from the year 2054 and is seemingly allergic to almost everything in her environment; she lives in a basement, subsisting on canned oxygen, homegrown food and the blood of her acolytes. Though at first, Peter and Lorna are adamant that Maggie is a fake, they both soon fall under her spell. Themes: • Concept Ideas - the cults control - Her control mind control persuasion over their mind and voice. They want to speak supernatural out / reveal the truth but are queens by their cult own doubt and disbelief..

faith • Want to feature Marlings face in some way.

I Origins I Origins begins when graduate student, Ian Gray, is researching the evolution of human eyes with Karen and Kenny, in order to prove that eyes have evolved instead of "appeared" as creationists claim. His fascination with eyes takes him into areas that have profound personal and cultural consequences. themes: • Eyes have been over done a lot with this film after life fan art etc. so i wanted to approach this a little reincarnation differently.

souls being connected • All about human reincarnation - souls being connected so wanted to represent this in some way.

• using the human mind - visual connection

• incorporate hands to cover mouth - im not great at drawing hands so needed some reference!

• below - monoprint texture against digitally applied colour

Sound of My Voice

• Chose silhouettes of other faces - to keep Marling's face the focus of the image.

• I don’t think the top of the frame is working - too expansive - needs to be cropped in on her face perhaps. • Incorporating type in to the image. - thought it would look interesting to use quite expressive type in the image. - using hand drawn lettering and hoping to combine digitally. - I can envisage how its going to look - whether it will work is another question!

• Coloured pencil used to create her face. - I wanted to use a range of mixed media across all images - editing and refining the look digitally across all three pieces to tie them together.

• I am happy with certain aspects of the final images, but reflecting on it now I feel that it definitely needs work.

• I like the gradient affect combined with the texture, and the dream like surreal quality to the background part of the image.

• The type is strong in my opinion - i like the way it connects with part of the composition. - really enjoyed creating that part.

• The hands let it down for me - wether its the proportion or angle im not sure…

• I ended up taking so long during the editing process changing things around but not really getting anywhere! i realised i just needed to leave it and move on.

• A difficult aspect of editing digitally for me - is not being able to envisage the final out come as clearly as i would using other media.. I do a lot of experimentation during the digital process which is good for learning - but things often don't turn out the way i would like.

I Origins

• Developing this forward - I experimented with symmetry and combining faces.

• I enjoyed creating this face composition, like i said previously, i didn't want to focus heavily on an eye because all other artwork for this film seems to, and i think you can communicate the themes in less obvious ways.

• I used ink and brush to create fading lines invented to be like brain waves as such.

• Altering the colour to be more in keeping with the previous design i think a similar colour scheme would be a good way to tie them together.

• Compositional development. - focusing on two faces i think is the direction to move forward with. I think it communicates the concept more effectively - two people who consciousness and memory can live on in another after death. - blue, death - red, life

• This colour scheme - favourite so far.

• Conceptually, I am really happy with the final faces design I think this was a different / none obvious approach to the stories themes.

• Like the aesthetic of the symmetry, and ink textures.

• Although I like the central image, I do feel that the overall composition looks slightly unfinished and could have been better considered as a poster design. If spending more time on this piece I would have perhaps incorporated a background of sorts.

• Adding the type. - An area which I also feel needs improvement. wanted to keep it simple but think the font could have been more in keeping with the imagery.

Another Earth

• coloured pencil drawn hands - with the intention of editing digitally.

• beginning by manipulating some monoprint texture to creating an earth. - like the natural variations of tone in the print.

• quite enjoyable working directly with shape rather than block line for a change - like the softer result also - fits with the dream state i’m trying to convey.

• incorporating monoprint texture into the background. - initially felt really flat so has some fun creating coloured gradient. Think this works really nicely to give a sunset sky affect. • adding some more depth and layers to the building - creates a kind of misty fog affect which i think add to the surreal feel of the illustration

• Used a colour overlay and gradient on the hands - i really like the affect of the coloured finger tips - draws your attention to the earth straight away. - In keeping with a similar colour scheme to the other designs also.

• Like the gradient background - but felt it is maybe a bit harsh? - not sure about all the different creases - maybe use less distracting?

• tried to soften around the earth but not sure about this faded look.

• My final poster design for ‘Another Earth’. Overall I am pleased with the final image which is my favourite from the set.

• I addressed my issues with the background which has become softer - gives much more balance to the composition.

• The image has a strong use of perspective which i think really draws you in.

• I enjoyed the process of collaging lots of different hand drawn elements into photoshop and felt that i really improved my digital skills. however i think it would have been interesting to incorporate my love of lino cut by bringing some elements into the design. something i am yet to explore is experiencing with combining lino with other process. • I don't think its the most coherent set, due to the way i developed my process and media throughout the creations of the designs, - one which i feel is much more refined by ‘Another Earth.’ • The final poster compositions for the series are not as well considered as they could have been. For this piece and ‘Eye Origins’, the text was an after thought, rather than considering it during the design process. I think its more successful for ‘sound of my voice’ where it became an incorporation into the illustration.

• Proposed as a set of posters. Although its perhaps not the most i do still think he imagery compliment each other visually - the similar colour palette and use of line work and texture. However, I wouldn't be happy displaying them as finalised series, I would want to work on them further to bring more visual consistence throughout.

Final Reflections:
 • I definitely enjoyed some aspects of this series, and I think there are areas of success, and potential, but I also feel that it was quite rushed at times and it isn’t my best work. The project was also running along side the beginning of my greek mythology series and I think I was eager to spend my time lino cutting over digitally editing! In all honestly it has made me realise how much I enjoy the analogue approaches to image making. Although I love to use digital methods occasionally, it’s reminded me that lino cutting and hand made methods are where my heart lies.

• It would have been interesting to incorporate some of these processes into these images - combining aspects of lino, digital and ink perhaps. I have definitely improved upon my digital skills through a lot of trial and error, and in the future I look forward to combining these different skills. There’s definitely the potential to push some of these techniques in my practice.
