Ιn ancient times, “cyanos” was used to describe the blue reflections created when the sun light illuminated on dark-pencil grey metal alloy. Woman Of Mythology Pattern Design •

After designing a range of patterns from my nature project, I wanted to apply these skills to my woman of greek mythology and see if i am able to create a pattern design from my lino prints.

To begin with I have

I feel that a range of my sketchbook designs evolving around greek mythology could be developed with the purpose of becoming a pattern design.

I would like to study how the greeks use line and shape to create a range of beautiful mural and border designs featured in most of their patterns. The complexity of these is stunning and its a visual aspect that I feel my illustrations could benefit from.

Their pieces often stick to a rather limited colour palette of very muted but warm tones.

Symmetry is consistent throughout a lot the designs.

Originally for my approach at a pattern design, I wanted to focus around symmetry. However, I really struggled to achieve this whilst also using the pattern technique i had come to know and love. - I was unable to mirror the design to the other side of the art-board and fill in the gaps. I think this has something to do with the precision of the composition.

The technique I have been using to create a seamless pattern only allows for a a more random and chaotic design - so I altered my composition plan to accommodate this.

I would still like to explore creating a pattern with symmetry but need to look into more techniques to execute this. With the time remaining I am happy to stick with the design I have.

Overall, I am really pleased with the final greek pattern. I wasn't sure that positioning each of the lino woman so randomly would work so well. Playing around with scale and mirroring each lino created more variation and diversity within the design. Like my previous pattern designs, the addition of a faded background brought more depth and balance to the final piece.

Applying the design to a range of products - allowed me to see its true versatility. I especially like the china blue design and think it would be desirable across a range of home furnishings and merchandise.
