Reflecting On My Practice

• Where do you see yourself now as an illustrator?

Storyteller, printmaker, - inspired by mythology, nature, the and weird and wonderful. My practice is driven my my love of lino print and my enjoyment of exploring visual metaphors.

• Do people know you are here?

Not so much… Until this moment in time, I've not had much confidence in my work. but over the course of the year I have refined my printing skills, and my practice is evolving into a place where I feel really happy with the work I am producing. - It’s about time I get sharing!

• What methods are you using to tell them?

So far, just instagram. But I am in the process of setting up a website and other platforms such as linked and The Dots.

• You have had three years to develop your talent so far, what do you feel you have achieved?

Looking back on where I was first year, I feel that I have achieved a lot! Over the course of the three years I have explored a range of media and approaches to image making but second year was a really huge turning point for me. I discovered Printmaking and haven’t looked back since. Not only the actual process of lino printing, but the over all aesthetic of my work. - I bring over the visual qualities that i achieve in lino across into analog processes too. Over this year particularly, I've been able to bridge the gap between my lino printing and hand drawn work. There’s so much more that I would like to explore in the lino cut process, and will continue to push myself after university.

• How do you see this achievement, slog, or useful?
A definite achievement in my eyes.

• What will your final PP3 Presentation contain, and why is it important?

My presentation will reveal my journey to discovering print and how I have reached this point in my practice. It will talk of my love of nature and story telling and why these subjects are important to me. It will also discuss my hopes and aims for the future.

• Why do you need to present yourself?

I feel like my practice is in a place where I feel proud to show the work i have achieved - I'm forever going to develop and surely get better - but i would like people to see how far I've come and appreciate the hard work I've put into my practice.

Where do I see myself in the creative industry?

I’ve drawn my inspirations from a variety of professionals this year, - who all specialise in different areas of illustration. At this point in the year, I feel that I have made quiet a few developments and realisations within my practice, and felt it wise to reflect again on where I would like to see my work and how I am going to go about getting my stuff out there!

To begin with I really want to make sure I've got a portfolio which shows off my strengths. I want to have full confidence in the collection. - doesn't nekckssarily have to be lots of images. Better to be carefully curated.

Interests in - Book illustration / surface pattern - textiles - products / Lino printing personal / editorial?
 - I don't want to limit how i apply my skills in the industry and would like to work across a variety of outlets.

To build up my portfolio, I want to keep developing my lino cut and printing skills as soon as I graduate. I would really like to work on some narrative based briefs as that is something which I feel my portfolio is lacking. I have a number of briefs which I proposed for extended practice but didn't have time to complete. I didn't want to rush these designs and feel they would be beautiful in lino!

• I am going to contact a variety of illustration agencies after graduating. - It is important to consider if my work will aesthetically appeal to them and fit amongst their other artists. It is also an important to see if my work stands out - does it oer something new and exciting that they don't already have in their collection?

Perhaps begin by looking closer to home - lots of print fair opportunities around York.

Would like to take part in the print fair in next yeah which members of my course participated in. - I didn't feel as though I was in a place to sell my things this year, but i have recently developed my practice to a point where I have a lot more confidence in my work. I think taking part in various print fairs around Yorkshire will give me some goals to work towards and drive my practice forward. - have a reason to keep making even when the freelance work isn't rolling in.

It would be fun to consider collaborating with others from my course. - stay in touch! - i know people that would be interested.

other print fairs around York - Christmas.

• I have looked into possible internships and work experience in Print studios around the UK. It would be great to have some facilities to keep working in whilst shadowing other professionals. I still feel that I have so much more to learn and am trying to incorporate new techniques into my printing practice all the time - so this could be a really fun and valuable experience.

• Possible internships in and around the UK. - paid if possible beach of travel expenses. - its frustrating that there aren’t as many around Yorkshire but i will keep hunting!

• Not too fussy about the specific area of design - It would just be a great experience to work in the industry and get a first hand experience. - build connections

• interested in print design / surface pattern ? / graphic design.
