Computer on Bord Modern automobiles are being equipped with evermore complex board computers. Long gone are the times when a HiFi-system, a hands-free kit and a navigation system sufficed. As expectancies grow, so does the complexity of the underlying specifications. Trodden paths must be abandoned, a step which does not come easy to everyone. om cust er

In a large number of smaller sub-projects, a team of SOPHISTs analyzed and optimized most of the specification-related methods over the course of a year. The guidelines concerning the structuring of requirements, the management of change requests, the coordination of details with the supplier or the documentation of constants where revised by SOPHIST. Furthermore, completely new concepts for the validation of requirements, the matching of simultaneously processed documents or the delineation of terminology where drawn up, piloted and established. Moreover, campaigning amongst the engineers, team leaders and project managers needed to be undertaken, so as to prevent necessary improvements from shipwrecking due to biases or misunderstandings.

As part of the planned launch of a new luxury vehicle, one of the large German automobile producers decided to develop a new telematic system. Because of new technical possibilities and rising expectations where it comes to comfort, the bar has been set quite high compared to the predecessor model. Especially the more complex networking of diverse components, the higher number of specifications and the growing dependency on the suppliers demand new and improved methods to elicit, document, coordinate and manage requirements. Many an employee is unwilling to relinquish established processes - especially when, in parallel to this project, the development of older carlines is still under way. The customer‘s requirements engineering team thus needed support by SOPHIST in elaborating, optimizing, communicating and implementing new methods.

Customer benefit: ►► The risen exigencies where met with improved methods, replacing outdated processes ►► The efficiency of the newly implemented methods was increased by reducing reticence and aversion ►► The joint understanding for key specification details was much improved by the introduction of a comprehensive validation process ►► During the piloting of the new methods the increase in quality led to quite some enthusiasm, which in turn positively affected the motivation of the team members and the overall identification with the products described
