Business processes and systems two sides of the same coin To make the optimum use of IT systems, it is crucial that a company knows and understands the business processes these systems ought to support. SOPHIST compiles the basis necessary for a goal-oriented replacement of legacy systems for the EnBW Trading GmbH.

The challenge: The EnBW Trading GmbH is an enterprise of the EnBW AG, the third-largest electricity producer in Germany. The company began trading with physical and financial electricity products on the German and international markets in 1998. Over the course of time, it became clear that the employed systems weren‘t up to par with current and future requirements. Thus, project management posed these questions:

►► Where must the IT support structure be revised? ►► Could we improve our business processes while carrying out these modifications?

Customer benefit: ►► With its experience in business process modeling and system analysis, SOPHIST creates an outstanding basis for all decisions that need to be made. ►► EnBW Trading GmbH can use the knowhow of the SOPHISTs to improve the design of the revised process model ►► The integration of the different departments into the communication and outcome of the project further the understanding these departments have of their own processes

Implementation: Based on these insights, the SOPHIST team opts to reverse the sequence - meaning the business processes will be analyzed first, followed by a revision of the IT systems. The concept drawn up by the SOPHISTs stipulates that after an analysis of the current processes (including the IT systems presently in use) the focus must shift to the documentation of the essential target processes. This allows for the identification and elimination of superfluous activities (mostly caused by the current system environment). The resulting business process map enables the parties responsible at EnBW to make well grounded decisions about which areas would benefit most from a remodeled and revised system environment. SOPHIST can introduce its experience with system analysis at this point as well: based on unambiguous and prioritized requirements, an evaluation of the systems currently available on the market is performed, so that when this phase ends the most suitable system has been identified and EnBW has a specification detailing the needed functionalities to serve as the contractual basis.
