Coaching staff members in the elicitation and verification of requirements and architecture documents SOPHIST GmbH supported MTU’s electronics development in the analysis and design of various products. The focus lay on a methodological coaching of the staff in the field of requirements engineering as well as object-oriented analysis and design using UML/SysML, on the coordination of methods and tools and on operational support for the staff.
The Challenge MTU is one of the world’s leading producers of large diesel engines and entire propulsion systems for ships, heavy land and rail vehicles and industrial drive systems. Together with MTU Onsite Energy, it forms one of the two core brands of Rolls-Royce Power Systems. Within the scope of the continuous improvement of processes, the requirements management processes of the electronics development were meant to be enhanced. It was SOPHIST’s goal to minimize redundancies in requirements documents, to increase the comprehensibility and clarity and to facilitate discovering test relevant information.

Implementation In the course of SOPHIST’s work at MTU, we were integrated in several projects. We have supported staff members in the elicitation, documentation, consolidation and management of specifications on different levels of abstraction. Furthermore we provided operational support in these projects. We have introduced a use case-driven approach for generating the requirements documents. When reviewing the requirements- and architecture documents, the specified targets of the newly instituted development process were
considered. The results were then used for a constructive discussion of the potential for improvement in the further course of the project and for other projects. The acceptance towards the new development processes was highly improved through the involvement of many different projects. We have generated and attuned a guideline for the model based documentation of requirements. Furthermore, a traceability concept for the application in the safety environment was developed. We assisted the staff in their project work with information and support whenever questions concerning modeling and tracing arose.
Technical Data: Tools Employed: Rational Rhapsody, MKS Integrity, Enterprise Architect Methods Employed: Workshops, SOPHIST methods for documenting in natural language, objectoriented analysis and design with UML / SysML, V-Model XT
