Crystal Manning

Crystal grew up in northern Missouri where she discovered passion for art in her younger years. She received a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Missouri State University and minored in Art Design.

After working as a graphic designer for 10 years, she began using her art and design skills to create surface and textile patterns. In 2015, she ordered her first sewing machine and began teaching herself how to sew with her designs printed on Spoonflower fabric. Despite stepping on pins and befriending the seam ripper, sewing and fabric design quickly became a new passion for her.

Crystal currently lives in Kansas City, Missouri where she continues to create new designs for licensing. Nature is her favorite source of inspiration as she loves flowers, birds and cheerful colors with a vintage vibe

HOW TO FIND A QUILTING RETREAT RIGHT FOR YOU

Quilting is a hobby enjoyed by many people For some, the joy and relaxation from quilting can be enhanced by attending a quilting retreat A quilting retreat is a gathering of like-minded individuals who come together to share their love of quilting and learn new skills from each other

8 ARTICLE

However, with so many retreats available, finding the right one can take time and effort In this article, we will discuss the steps you can take to find a quilting retreat that is right for you

.01

DETERMINE YOUR GOALS

Before you start your search for a quilting retreat, it is crucial to determine your goals Do you want to learn a new quilting technique, or do you want to spend time with other quilters? Do you want to focus solely on quilting, or do you want to incorporate other activities into your retreat, such as hiking or yoga? Understanding what you hope to gain from a quilting retreat will help you narrow your search

.02

RESEARCH RETREATS

Once you have determined your goals, it is time to research quilting retreats A quick online search will bring up hundreds of options, but not all retreats are created equal. Look for retreats that offer the things that are important to you, such as specific quilting techniques, ample free time, and comfortable lodging accommodations Be sure to look at the retreat's website and read reviews from past participants

.03

CONSIDER LOCATION AND TRAVEL

Location is an essential factor when choosing a quilting retreat Do you want to attend a retreat close to home, or are you willing to travel across the country or even overseas? Consider how far you are ready to travel and any additional costs associated with travel If you are attending a retreat in a new location, consider whether you need a rental car or transportation to and from the airport

.04

DETERMINE THE COSTS

Attending a quilting retreat can be expensive, so it is crucial to consider the costs before deciding. Most retreats will have a registration fee ranging from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand In addition to the registration fee, consider the cost of lodging, meals, and travel Some retreats will include meals and accommodation in the registration fee. In contrast, others will require you to make your own arrangements Make a budget and consider any additional costs associated with attending a retreat, such as project materials or spending money for local excursions

.05

CONTACTTHERETREAT ORGANIZER

Once you have narrowed down your search to a few retreats, it is time to contact the organizer Inquire about the availability of spots, any special requirements or recommendations, and the logistics of the retreat You may also ask about the qualifications of the instructors and if they are experienced in the particular techniques you are interested in learning Be sure to ask any questions to help you determine if the retreat is right for you

.06

After researching and contacting retreats, you should have a good idea of which retreat is the right one for you. Consider all the factors, such as location, costs, instructor experience, and accommodations, and choose based on your priorities If you still need clarification, take a closer look at the course curriculum or talk to past attendees Remember that each retreat is unique and will offer different experiences, so choose one that best aligns with your goals

Finally, attending a quilting retreat can be a fantastic way to improve your skills, meet new people, and have fun With so many options out there, finding the right retreat for you can be a challenge But by following these steps, you can narrow your search and find a quilting retreat that will leave you feeling inspired, refreshed, and ready to create.

Additionally, if you are still trying to figure it out, there are many Facebook groups and forums out there where you can get feedback from others. Experts on the subject, such as Rona Herman, The Traveling Quilter, post regular updates on retreats and travel destinations of interest to quilters that you will find very informative

Sunflowers In My Heart

In difficult times, our creative community often leans-in to its abilities and makes effort to do what we can to help ease the suffering of others Whether it’s making facemasks for frontline workers or quilts for people displaced from earthquakes or floods, we try to reach across distances to share our care and to try to turn feelings of helplessness to hopefulness.

When the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in March 2022, I felt the urge to help in some small way. As the atrocities unfolded, I, and the rest of the world, learned about the significance of sunflowers not only in the Ukrainian culture, but also as a symbol of strength and renewal. It was with this in mind that I designed my “Sunflowers In My Heart” t-shirt to honor and celebrate the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people When I learned that Chef Jose Andrés and World Central Kitchen had stationed their operations in Ukraine and several surrounding countries to feed Ukrainian refugees, I was deeply inspired by their commitment and bravery. We made them the focus of our t-shirt fundraiser to help amplify the humanitarian work of this extraordinary organization.

“Sunflowers in My Heart” is a collection that expands on the sunflower image I created and radiates happiness into each of the supporting prints. The warm golden yellows chase away gloom, the grassy greens grow optimism, and the deep blues reflect a sense of tranquility. I hope you stitch your own bright joy and love into every seam, uplift someone’s spirits with your creations and ultimately send as much positivity out into the world as possible. We sure need more of that. - Kate

HOW INCORPORATING AROMATHERAPY INTO YOUR QUILTING & SEWING PRACTICES CAN ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE

Sewing and quilting require a lot of focus, patience, and dedication They are known to be calming, therapeutic, and fulfilling activities, and many people find themselves drawn to these crafts as a form of relaxation or creative outlet Adding essential oils and aromatherapy to your quilting or sewing practice can help enhance this experience by promoting a sense of calm and relaxation, reducing stress, improving focus, and even boosting creativity

16 ARTICLE

When you begin incorporating aromatherapy into your sewing or quilting practice, it's important to do so safely and effectively So here are my necessary disclaimers and words of caution as a casual user with no formal training in aromatherapy: Carefully read and follow the directions for using the specific oils. Finding the right essential oils to use is just as important as knowing how to use them Not all oils are created equal; some can be harmful if not used correctly It is important to always dilute essential oils appropriately and read up on any potential skin sensitivities, staining risks, or contraindications before use, as those are outside the scope of this article.

Once you have selected the right essential oils, there are several ways that you can incorporate them into your quilting or sewing practice

Diffusing Essential Oils

Aromatherapy is a form of holistic healing that uses natural essential oils to promote physical and psychological well-being Using a diffuser is one of the easiest ways to incorporate aromatherapy into your quilting or sewing practice. Finding unique or fun diffusers can be part of the enjoyment of starting this adventure! They can undoubtedly add dramatic flare to your quilting and sewing space, making the experience even more enjoyable Amazon com is filled with many diffuser options that are as inexpensive or elaborate as you want Those with a flaming effect are my favorites

For those who have never used a diffuser, they release essential oil particles into the air, filling your workspace with the scent of your chosen oil Diffusing essential oils before beginning your sewing or quilting can create a calm and inviting ambiance, preparing you for the tasks ahead

When used in a quilting or sewing environment, essential oils can help to reduce stress and create a peaceful and calming atmosphere Essential oils can also help promote creativity and focus, allowing the quilter or sewer to stay focused on the task

To use essential oils for aromatherapy, add a few drops of the desired essential oil to a diffuser or oil burner as directed. This will disperse the scent throughout the room, allowing the quilter or sewer to enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy

Scented Candles/Wax Melts

Scented candles and wax melts are an easy and effective way to add a pleasant scent to the quilting or sewing environment Essential oils are added by the makers to the wax to give the candle a unique scent

This can help to reduce stress and provide a calming atmosphere while quilting or sewing Using wax melts instead of burning candles is a cleaner option that avoids the risk of burning candles in your workspace and prevents smoky smells from affecting your fabrics. While there is a considerable market for wax melts, ETSY provides many homemade options that I enjoy experimenting with

Roll-On Oils

Roll-on essential oils are a convenient and easy way to enjoy the benefits of essential oils while quilting or sewing. The oils are contained in a small bottle with a roller ball top, allowing users to apply them to their skin easily This can help to reduce stress and create a calming atmosphere for quilting or sewing Again, a reminder to follow all guidelines and precautions and do skin patch testing as directed before applying any essential oils to your skin.

Scented Fabric

While this is a popular option, honestly, it is not one I recommend, but will include for those that might be interested. Essential oils can also be used to scent fabric pieces for quilting or sewing. To do this, add a few drops of the desired essential oil to a cotton ball and place it inside the fabric Techniques for using essential oils in the laundering process might also be worth considering for those who prewash their materials before sewing This will allow the scent to linger on the fabric, providing a pleasant and calming atmosphere for quilting or sewing. While this one can be a fun option, the risk of staining fabric with this process makes it one I would only consider after careful research and testing

Many different essential oils can be used in your quilting or sewing practice, each with its unique properties and benefits. For instance, lavender essential oil is ideal for promoting relaxation, while peppermint essential oil can improve focus and reduce fatigue You could also try bergamot essential oil, the mood-lifter, or lemon essential oil, known for its stress-relieving properties

Incorporating aromatherapy into your sewing or quilting practice can help you create a beautiful, relaxing, and therapeutic atmosphere, making the experience more enjoyable and productive I incorporate aromatherapy into any activity I can I love it that much!

It is essential to understand the correct methods for using essential oils to experience their benefits effectively. It's always best to start with a tiny quantity and gradually work up to a scent concentration that meets your needs Also, please ensure that you purchase high-quality essential oils, as that makes a huge difference in scent quality and safety of use

FlannelsLakeside Gatherings

There is nothing like living on the shores of a lake to make one appreciate its subtle beauty. Blues go from dark shades to brilliant hues as clouds pass by. The sandy colored shoreline remains constant, bringing life to the lake, such as birds and children who splash about And through the winter, the lake’s silence creates a sense of peace that is truly mesmerizing. Watching the daily changing of the seasons from my sewing studio was the inspiration for Lakeside Gatherings – I wanted to capture the warm and bright colors of summer, as well as the cold serenity of wintertime in a flannel line to inspire quilts of all shapes and sizes perfect for breezy afternoons or cold winter nights.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT QUILTING FABRIC:

Tips And Tricks For Selecting Fabrics That Complement Each Other

40 ARTICLE

The right combination of fabrics can make the difference between a mediocre quilt and a stunning masterpiece Selecting fabrics that complement each other is essential to any successful quilting project But with so many colors, textures, and prints to choose from, it can be challenging to know where to start

So, let's examine some tips and tricks to help you choose the right quilting fabric for your project

.01

CONSIDER THE PROJECT'S PURPOSE AND AUDIENCE

The first thing to consider when choosing fabrics is the project itself What is the quilt or project for? Who is it for? Answering these questions will help you determine your quilt's or project's color scheme, style, and overall tone For example, if you're making a quilt for a baby, choose soft pastel colors and fun, playful prints If you're making a quilt for a wedding gift, choose elegant, muted tones and classic patterns

.02

CHOOSE A COLOR PALETTE

Once you've decided on the purpose and audience of your quilt, it's time to choose a color palette The right color palette can make all the difference in creating a cohesive and visually pleasing design.

One way to determine a color palette is to choose one fabric with multiple colors and build from there Another way is to use a color wheel to determine complementary, analogous, or triadic color schemes Complementary colors are opposite on the color wheel, while similar colors sit next to each other Triadic colors are three colors spaced evenly apart on the wheel Using a color wheel can help you create a balanced and harmonious quilt

.03

EXPERIMENT WITH PRINTS AND TEXTURES

Fabrics come in various prints, such as stripes, checks, florals, and geometric shapes. Experimenting with different patterns and textures can add depth and interest to your quilt Consider using a mix of large and small prints, mixing geometric and organic shapes, or using a variety of textures like cotton, silk, and velvet

.04

This is a favorite technique here at SewEndipitous, which is why we select and provide entire fabric collections and not just randomly chosen bolts of fabric Selecting from the same fabric collection can make your quilt look modern and cohesive Fabric companies create a whole line of coordinating fabrics with different prints, textures, and colors that work together This means you can be sure the fabrics will complement each other and create a unified look Also, working from the same line can save you time and effort when choosing fabrics

.05

USETHESAMEFABRICLINE USEANEUTRAL

Using a neutral fabric can help balance out the other fabrics in your quilt Neutral colors like white, cream, gray, and beige can help ground the wilder patterns and prints, providing a resting place for the eye Also, neutrals can provide the lightest or darkest contrast, guiding the viewer's eyes to the quilt's focal point

.06

DON'T BE AFRAID TO MIX AND MATCH

The most important thing to remember when choosing quilting fabrics is to have fun and experiment Feel free to mix and match different fabrics and prints to create something unique and stunning Try pairing unlikely prints, like florals with stripes, or experiment with different shades and hues of similar colors A quilt with a mix of different styles, colors, and textures can be a beautiful and creative expression of your personal style and tastes

.07

CONSIDER THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PATTERN

The complexity of the quilt pattern can also impact the choice of fabrics A complex pattern with many intricate pieces may benefit from using fabrics with a more straightforward design to avoid overwhelming the viewer Conversely, a simple pattern might benefit from using fabrics with more bold designs to add interest and detail

.08

CONSIDERTHESCALEOFTHE FABRICS

When choosing fabrics for your quilt, you should also consider the scale of the print Large prints might work well as feature fabrics, filling up large areas of the quilt Small prints, on the other hand, might work well as complementary fabrics, providing detail and interest It's essential to keep in mind, though, that if you choose several small prints, you should use them in different areas of the quilt to provide contrast and prevent them from appearing too busy or cluttered

Ultimately, choosing quilting fabric requires careful consideration and planning, but don't get overwhelmed. By considering the purpose and audience of the quilt, using a complimentary color palette, experimenting with prints and textures, using the same fabric line, adding neutrals, mixing and matching, considering the complexity of the pattern, and thinking about scale, you can create a cohesive and stunning quilt. Remember to have fun and experiment! The possibilities are endless
