PILOT: Bruce Wood, Lift Off 4 LIFT-UP Balloonmeister BALLOON: LIFT-UP Carbondale, CO

SPOT YOUR BALLOONS

Pilot & Balloon Information PILOT: Jim Ahern BALLOON: Missing Albuquerque, NM

Link

Jim has been flying balloons since 1974 and has logged over 3000 hours flying in hundreds of events in corporate balloons, special shapes and various sizes ranging from 35,000 to 400,000 cubic feet. He and Margo are enjoying sport ballooning with their dedicated crew, aka “The Chain Gang.” PILOT: Robert Gonzales BALLOON: Look Twice Waco, TX

Bob currently lives in Waco, Texas where he works for Jenny Craig as a corporate pilot. He has 34 years in aviation, including 18 years as a pilot flying airplanes and helicopters, 9 years flying hot air balloons and as an aircraft mechanic and air traffic controller in the US Air Force. He is a proud father of 3 young ladies and 5 grandchildren. PILOT: Johnny Nash BALLOON: Doubloon

negro

con

Parker, CO

Johnny started flying in 1987, shortly after his first ride in the fall of 1986. His first balloon was purchased in February, 1987 and the second, and current balloon was purchased in February, 1997. One of his favorite flights was flying his balloon in Dayton, Ohio off the same runway as his father flew a fighter during WWII. PILOT: Nolan Schuler BALLOON: Bella Colorado Manitou Springs, CO

Nolan Schuler is retired from the United States Air Force as Space System Operator. He began ballooning in 1998 with his first ride at Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. After retiring from the Air Force in 2006, he bought his first balloon in January 2008 and attained private certificate. PILOT: Mark Whiting BALLOON: Big Top Denver, CO

In August of 1978 Mark went to a vacant field in the Denver Tech Center and inflated the very first RE/MAX Balloon and has been positively hooked ever since! The “control” challenge of flying a Balloon is his lure, however he adores the responses from spectators and children when he “puts on a show.” Buoyant Regards!

Bruce along with his wife Pam, own and operate Above It All Balloon Company based in Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado and recently acquired Camelot Balloons in Vail. Their combined fleet includes eight balloons ranging in size from 90,000 cubic feet to 315,000 cubic feet. Bruce has been flying balloons since 1989, having learned to fly right here in the Roaring Fork Valley, and has accumulated over 2200 hours in those 28 years. Bruce is currently the North Central Regional Director of the Professional Ride Operator division of the BFA. Bruce also enjoys competitive ballooning, having been ranked in the top 20 nationally two of the past four years, and competing in the U.S. National Championships for the last three years. Bruce and Pam have two grown children, Aimee and David, who both enjoy ballooning. PILOT: Jason Buckner BALLOON: Hale-Lucinations Albuquerque, NM

Jason Buckner has been involved in ballooning since the early 90s, crewing for hot air and gas balloons all over the US, Mexico and Spain. In 2009 he became a private pilot and started flying balloon events all over the Southwest. He won the New Mexico State Championship in 2010 and competed in the US Nationals in 2014 and 2015. PILOT: Barbi Hann BALLOON: Mama’s Parker, CO

Incognito

Barbi’s favorite thing is a morning with no passenger at the start of her inflation, then seeing some spectator watching in amazement, and offering them a ride. She is an improvisational student when not flying as she considers them both a lifestyle, not a hobby! She fancies herself as a “damn good joke teller” and loves a good water fight! PILOT: Raul Oliva BALLOON: Windspiration Hotchkiss, CO

Raul has been a balloon pilot for over 12 years and has flown airplanes for about 30 years. His day job is a school counselor. He lives in nearby Hotchkiss.

PILOT: Ken Tadolini BALLOON: Outlaw Denver, CO

Ken has over 3200 hours in many different balloons, sizes & shapes including the Famous Footwear Shoe, Klondike Polar Bear, Burger King Whopper, Safeway Shopping Cart, Uniroyal Tire, and Oggie - the Friendly Dinosaur. He has flown in Mexico, New Zealand, Sicily, Switzerland & the USA, and was a “Media Pilot” for the Albuquerque Balloon Festival. PILOT: Shannon White BALLOON: Mountain Breeze Loveland, CO

Shannon started flying in 1990 and was hooked! He enjoys flying the smaller events in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Idaho. Shannon also flew for 10 years at events in Mexico and the 1st and only event for the bicentennial in Bogota Columbia! Shannon’s wife Anneliese is his Crew Chief and his daughter Sydney attends College in upstate New York.

PILOT: Don Dougherty BALLOON: Dark Sunrise Colorado Springs, CO

Don has been ballooning since he was 8 years old. He received his private license at the age of 22 and his commercial license at 27. Don loves flying balloons and it is his utmost passion. Don taught his now stepdaughter Eddi to fly and she did her solo under his guidance in 2015 at age 13. He married his soulmate Jen in October 2016. PILOT: Gary Moore BALLOON: TimePeace Lake Havasu City, AZ

Gary just passed his 26th year ballooning and has almost 1800 hours. He has flown in 21 countries and 40 of the 50 US states. He has flown several special shape balloons including Tony the Tiger, Miss Daisy, Woodrow Greenleaf, Owlbert Eyenstein, Bees, Snowman, and Select 55 Beer bottle. PILOT: David Providence BALLOON: Second Wind Erie, CO

David & Cheryl went to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in 1994, then went home to Indiana and found an instructor. Being a commercial airplane pilot allowed him to train and test directly for his balloon pilot certificate. The next October they purchased their first balloon. In 1998 they moved to the Denver area and have been flying ever since. PILOT: Debbi Waltman BALLOON: No Worries!! Windsor, CO

Debbie and crew chief/ photographer Don have been brightening the skies for over 25 years in Colorado and neighboring states. As a commercial hot air balloon pilot, Debbi has also worked with long distance gas balloon races across the country. Don has published several books and calendars that chart their adventures together. PILOT: Shawn Wix BALLOON: Yo Mama Phoenix, AZ

Originally from Delaware, Shawn became interested in ballooning while spending the winters in Phoenix. After starting out as a crew member for a local commercial balloon company, he developed a love for ballooning and decided to work on becoming a pilot. It didn’t take him long to meet and take ownership of Yo Mama.

HERE TO HELP IN ANY ECONOMY

In 1982, thousands of people poured into the region to find work during the oil shale industry boom. Many were living in cars and under bridges while they looked for jobs. Local churches, businesses and concerned citizens joined together to start LIFT-UP, which stands for Life Interfaith Team on Unemployment and Poverty.

While the economy has changed over the years, the needs have continued, and LIFT-UP has remained a reliable channel of support for our community, serving thousands of people each year, from Aspen to De Beque, who need assistance during times of temporary hardship.

When the oil shale industry collapsed in May of 1982, more than 1,200 people found themselves out of work, with no way to feed their families. Fortunately LIFT-UP was in place, and the community had a way to respond to help the people in need.

LIFT-UP has historically relied upon the plethora of people, churches, businesses and community organizations who’ve been ultimately supportive with LIFT-UP. Since 1982, the outpouring of help given by devoted teams of volunteers set the precedent that continues to this day. Our volunteers selflessly give their time and energy to assist the people who turn to us for help.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE In conjunction with their 35 anniversary, LIFT-UP is launching a capital campaign for a NEW WAREHOUSE facility. The current warehouse is very limiting as it is in a below-grade basement which requires access through a small elevator that is too small for pallets. Consequently all loads need to be broken down to fit into the elevator, distributed in the basement level, only to be re-loaded at delivery time. In addition, the basement space does not allow for stacking of pallets or boxes due to the low ceiling height, thus restricting the amount of food, both perishables and non-perishables alike, and supplies that can be stored at any one time. Due to the increase in needs, and the expanded coverage area from Aspen to De Beque of the people who are supported by LIFT-UP, the current space, which also houses the corporate offices, one of two Thrift Stores, as well as, the Food Pantry, is no longer large enough. The hope is to expand the Thrift Store in Rifle to accommodate more donations, store seasonal goods in the basement area and keep the pantry within walking distance for those who have no other mode to receive goods, while re-locating the food storage, vehicles and expanded refrigeration to a NEW WAREHOUSE.

The vision is to have a space that will be located close to I-70 somewhere between Rifle and New Castle, to allow easy access for semi-trucks loading and unloading. In addition, there is a need to have sufficient room for parking to accommodate delivery trucks, storage trailers and the vehicles of clients who come to the Food Bank or Thrift Store. LIFT-UP also hopes to add a Food Truck to assist with the Meal Monkey program that provides Friday School Lunches to all children (18 & under) when there is no Friday school in session. With numerous trucks, some with refrigeration, it is desirable for indoor vehicle storage to prevent freeze damage in the winter months, as well as to have a bay for vehicle maintenance.

• Glenwood Springs • New Castle • Rifle • Parachute • De Beque

Another new and expanding program that a new space could accommodate is a roots and vegetable garden. An initial Garden has already been built in space between the Parachute Food Bank & Thrift Store. Having gardens allow for more fresh produce to be distributed from the Food Banks.

d volunteers. You make it possible!

LIFT-UP is accepting donations in order to purchase land as well as to build the NEW WAREHOUSE facility and parking area. For more information, or to contribute your time, talent or treasures, please contact Executive Director Kim Loving at: (970) 625-4496.

LIFT-UP PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES The gleaning project was started in 2014 in order to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to LIFT-UP Food Banks. The project consists of donations from local gardeners, local producers and farmers markets with the largest donation from Silt- based Eagle Springs Organic. Since 2014 more than 43,016 pounds of fresh veggies and fruits have been received from our communities.

CAN-FOR-A-TRAM

Roberta “Bert” Botkin, Parachute Pantry Manager for the last two years and a volunteer since the beginning way back in 1982, along with Kim Wille’s Growing Empowerment organization, have built new gardens between the Parachute Thrift Store and Food Pantry. The gardens will increase the availability of fresh produce, first started by the gleaning project. The new gardens have been built through volunteers; including kids from Yampah who are learning how to run a business to grow gardens, and donated and recycled goods including seeds, plants, gravel, liners and more. “It has been such a pleasure to work with Kim and the kids along with all of our volunteers to be able to grow our own food and be able to provide fresh options to those that we serve,” said Bert. “We will be able to offer flowers, vegetables and fruit from spring to fall and are working on other options for year-round roots, as well.” A special thank you to Bert, Kim and all our Garden volunteers and generous donors.

Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park "Can-for-a-Tram", gives free gondola rides up to the Music on the Mountain concerts when you bring non-perishable food to donate to LIFT-UP! Visit glenwoodcaverns.com for more information

SPONSORS & SUPPORTERS

Here is a list of appropriate food items to donate:

MEAL MONKEY

Meal Monkey is a special program that was created by kids for kids. High School students make bag lunches on Thursdays for distribution to kids (18 & under) who need lunches on Friday when there is no school. Even the name was created by the kids! This program was just expanded to serve kids throughout the summer! In addition, LIFT-UP is working with KAJX who will be donating funds from their upcoming annual pledge drive to support this program.

GRAINS • Oatmeal • Crackers • All Types of Pasta • Cereal • Rice • Macaroni and Cheese

For more information on how to donate, sponsor or volunteer:

liftup.org • 970.625.2757

Donors are people who can give a dollar, ten dollars, a thousand dollars, or more! Everything gets put directly toward helping your neighbors from Aspen to De Beque. The money stays in our valley to help enable the mission of LIFT-UP.

LIFT-UP is so grateful to a long list of sponsors and supporters! These amazing individuals and organizations help raise funds, and the awareness radar of what LIFT-UP does to help make sure people in our valley are fed.

VOLUNTEERS

LIFT-UP relies heavily on volunteer support. LIFT-UP is in need of Extended Table volunteers year-round. Three of the LIFT-UP food pantries are also solely run by volunteers. Without volunteers LIFT-UP could not effectively supply what clients need.
