Dear Carbondale Citizens,

Director’s Message

I am happy to report that I am happy. I am happy to be working for the citizens of Carbondale It is an awesome task to provide a mulitude of Parks and Recreation opportunities to you. I am happy we have a population that is passionate about all forms of recreation that truly know how to enjoy our parks, trails, and open spaces. All it takes is one nice day in the spring and everyone appears with big sun-soaked smiles to fill our parks and trails. People of Carbondale, congratulations! You made it through another winter. Now check out the abundance of upcoming summer recreational offerings detailed in this program brochure. There is a saying in our industry that the benefits of Parks & Recreation are endless. But, in my new role as the Parks & Recreation Director, I wish to debunk that notion. The benefits of Parks & Recreation are dependent on efforts that are endless. I am now behind the scenes and realize that the inner workings of a small municipality are anything but small. Did you know that we have 34 dog pots and 110 trash & recycle bins in our parks? These all need to be emptied three times a week, so that is a total of 432 individual stops necessary per week. Did you know that our Parks Department aerates, fertilizes, and re-seeds 25 parks and over 100 acres of park land every spring? (And that is just to get the grass to grow!) They then have to retrace their steps every day of the week to mow the grass they just helped to sprout. The Parks Department cleans 10 bathrooms a week, weeds the bike park and the Gateway RV Park, paints over graffiti at the skate park, and cleans up trash and dog feces that somehow do not make it into one of the aformentioned hundred plus trash cans. They are daunting tasks and I questioned why so much effort, staff time, and budget goes into our Parks & Recreation offerings. I had to go back to our mission statement for the answer: Town of Carbondale Recreation & Community Center Mission Statement The Town of Carbondale Parks & Recreation Department is dedicated to providing and maintaining parks, trails, and recreational amenities. Through innovation and community cooperation, we will develop leisure services, programs, and facilities that improve the quality of life for all citizens, and benefit the economic vitality of our community. I get it. We are dedicated to providing something that improves every person’s quality of life. Parks, Trails and Recreational amenities are the great equalizer, available to all. The 16 acres of parkland per 1000 citizens that we have here in Carbondale should make us proud. The recreation amenites we maintain for you to use free of charge (think tennis courts, skatepark, soccer fields, bike park, frisbee golf course, horseshoe pits, volleyball and basketball courts, ice rinks and playgrounds) are all part of our mission to ensure that your benefits are endless. You are a part of the mission, too, and your “community cooperation” is needed to help us take care of what we have. With your help and our dedication, the benefits of Parks & Recreation will continue to be endless. See you in the park. Eric Brendlinger Parks & Recreation Director

Manager’s Message To my Carbondale Community, As I ponder what to compose for my first Carbondale Recreation Manager’s Message, I suddenly feel like I am back in school working on an essay entitled, “What Recreation Means to Me.” But how do I distill years of personal and professional recreating into a few paragraphs and adequately express my passion for it? After all, it is because of what recreation means to me that I am where I am. My recreational roots run deep, especially when in specific reference to Carbondale Recreation. I went from participating in swimming lessons at the Carbondale Pool as a kid, to instructing kids swimming lessons as an adult. I went from playing in summer softball, to supervising all of our softball players. I have gone from working as an employee at the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center’s front desk, to supervising the front desk, to managing the entire facility. Along the way, recreation has increasingly meant more and more to me. It means a lifestyle. It means a career. It means a whole way of living in and interacting with this community. I want it to mean something to you, too. Whether you prefer to recreate indoors or out, we can help. Did you know that we oversee youth and adult programs at more than 12 different recreation venues in Carbondale? Did you know that Carbondale is home to 25 different parks? (You might know this after reading Eric’s letter on the previous page-great minds write alike!) Did you know that your local Recreation Center is open over 90 hours every week, and 359 days a year? That’s 32,310 hours available for your indoor recreational needs! The Carbondale Parks and Recreation Department loves recreation and we want you to love it, too. That is why you will see 30-50 (or more!) different programs in each of the three brochures we produce annually. No matter who you are or what your passion is, we aspire to offer something for you. But in case we are missing anything, we invite you to tell us. What does recreation mean to you? Do you have a specific program, class, or event you would love to see happen? Tell us about it! You can call, email, Facebook, twitter, or text us! Better yet walk, run, jog, hop, skip, bike, scooter, or skateboard yourself over to the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center and meet with us in person. Let’s create something together. And then let’s recreate together. Recreation is a way of life. A really, really great way. So come recreate with us and let’s see what we can make recreation mean together. Respectfully, Jessi Rochel Community Center and Recreation Programs Manager

Welcome to Swim Lessons University; a progressive swim lesson system designed to make children safer when in and around the water. Please note, in this program, children in Pre-School, Beginners, and Intermediate lessons may be asked to wear swim aids. This is not a life jacket.
