WELCOME Director’s Note She is the one who nurtures you She provides comfort and soft touches She is the one that fights for her beliefs in quiet ways or loud when needed He is part of she She is part of everything This year’s show focuses on women, but is not exclusive to women. If there was ever a time we all needed each other, it is now. When we came up with this theme we thought the immediate future would be filled with female leaders. Angela Merkel is one of the most powerful women in the world. The United Kingdom has a female leader and, we projected, the United States would be led by a woman. While that did not happen, this show has taken us on an amazing journey through several different archetypes of SHE. Lilith, the strong, independent female, the mother/nurturer, the warrior protector and the crone. We end with modern woman. That is us, filled with choice and opportunity. We appreciate that you have made the choice to support us in our creativity. It takes over 100 people to build this show, designers, performers, models and artists. We come together around a common theme and allow our juices to flow and blend. That experience is as indelible as the show. We thank you for understanding the value, and importance of art in all forms. While government funding for the arts may decline with our new administration, art will not stay silent, Amy Kimberly Director

What is happening at Carbondale Arts? Our mission is Building Community Through Art and we take this seriously. Carbondale Arts (CA) has been an intrinsic part of the Carbondale community for over 43 years and is deeply involved in issues such as affordable housing, economic development and education in our schools. Known for events like the Carbondale Mountain Fair and this show, we find ways to bring people together to keep our community thriving. Our home is The Launchpad, located in the core of the Carbondale Creative District. We share our space with Dance Initiative, The R2 Gallery, The Artique and the Betty Jane Schuss Memorial community gardens. Stay connected with us throughout the year by signing up for our newsletter or becoming a member at carbondalearts.com.

Big Project Update: Rosybelle, The Mobile Maker Space This spring the Rosybelle bus is launching with workspaces for 12 students, featuring tech and art equipment for knowledge thanks to the Susan Gurrentz Fund for the Arts and the Betty Jane Schuss Foundation, a new paint job by artist Stanley Bell, run from solar thanks to CORE and Sunsense and a new coordinator in the form of Kat Rich. Watch for her at a school or event near you. She will be providing three summer camps in the West end of our county and a free after-school art class for our Carbondale elementary school youth. Programs like these are supported, in part, through this event. If you believe in the power of creativity help keep opportunity thriving in our valley and beyond.

FEATURE A Growing Dance Community! “Dance is the mother of all arts. Music & poetry exist in time; painting and architecture in space, but dance lives at once in time and space” – Sachs Through the support of Dance Initiative, Carbondale Art’s partner at the Launchpad, Carbondale has seen a swell of activity in the movement arts, resulting in a very active and committed group of dance artists who organize their passion and their work as CoMotion: a conscious movement project. CoMotion dancers have performed in Green is the New Black (GITNB) since it first organized in 2013 and strive to develop multidimensional works and explore creative boundaries through collaboration. In addition to performing in the fashion show, CoMotion has also created and performed full evening works in warehouses, gallery spaces, and The Launchpad where they also train and rehearse. Various CoMotion company members have collaborated with some of Dance Initiative’s Artists In Residence and commission artists, Patrick Mueller, Meg Madorin & Laura Ann Samuelson, and Alya Howe, to perform resident’s original works. These are some significant accomplishments

for a group of dancers, who aside from dancing together twice a week, also have full time jobs during the day and families. CoMotion was founded by dancers Ashley Arnold, Aja McAdams, Brianne Jones, Dana Ganssle Ellis, and Deborah Colley and has been deeply supported by Dance Initiative. Over 27 different dancers have participated in CoMotion projects, and 19 of them have performed in GITNB under the choreographic direction of Deborah Colley. This year a core of four CoMotion dancers, Dana Ganssle Ellis, Deborah Colley, Emily Fifer, and Meagan Londy Shapiro are working collaboratively to create the choreography for SHE. This shared creative process makes for richer and more compositions. Hopefully, the depth of the artistry will bleed into your experience as an audience member, but it certainly helps the dancers dive deeper into their own work and performance. The Rio Grande ARTway: Slated to begin in spring 2017, this linear park is a creative place-making project that will bring community together and give voice to who we are and what we are about. The first park is De-Rail Park at Hwy. 133 and the Rio Grande Trail. Partners include RFTA, The Carbondale Rotary Clubs, MBS Associates LLC, DHM, and SGM. The Latino Folk Art Garden is in the beginning design process and will be located at 8th Street and the trail. Coming soon is the Youth Art Park: soft surface and single track trails and interactive art and history installations.

We end every year with our fabulous, unique “Deck the Walls Holiday Show” starting mid-November.

Space to Create Housing Initiative: Space to Create Colorado is the first state-driven initiative for affordable housing for artists in the nation. The purpose is to develop affordable housing and work space for artists and arts organizations and to position Colorado as the nation’s leader in artist-led community transformation in rural communities. Space to Create will facilitate the development of nine projects in Colorado over the course of eight years. It is Carbondale’s year to compete for a Space to Create project and we are not letting this opportunity go by. The application is due on March 15. Stay tuned!

HERSTORY THROUGH SPOKEN WORD All poems by Elissa Rodman

Warrior/Protector

Lilith There once was the idea of paradise. Before that, no vocabulary for good nor evil. As soon as light bathed that world, so too did the first shadow fall.

They will come with knives and sticks, carve their initials on your heart, laugh cold and blue. This life will shake your body like a devastation and prayer, breaking your heart over and over until it stays open –

We woke from the newly made earth together, Idea made flesh, words breathed into life I was not the one to choose order, and so you damned me for it. I was lifted away on the wind for the crime of saying we were born equals, Sent to linger in the shadows, away from the light.

There is no justice on the battlefield of someone else’s making. There will never be true power as long as it relies on diminishing another.

What you never learned, Adam, is that I did not fear the darkness.

Love is the incantation and the remedy – stand grounded, girl. Yours will be the story of your own making.

Crone

My gift to you is the boundless strength of unbridled forgiveness and radical empathy – carry with you this secret: that there is nothing lowly in this universe.

Modern Woman

This is the time when I see what has held the center of every lie I’ve told myself I had to believe all these years –

Even in this late hour, there are those who wish to possess my body and my mind: They draw up fences in the fertile earth of my imagination, make me cherish each stone in the walls around my heart, tell me to exchange boundlessness for certainty.

That beauty was my only treasure and the gradual unfolding from youth was to be despised. Now, I will look for the way things have spiralled out from that false center – this new shape I will take is real. It’s one they’ll never approve, one they’ll never control. Come, hold my gnarled hands. Look into my eyes and see multitudes.

Best little Inn in the Roar ing Fork Valley

I’m done hearing their words come out of my mouth. I will no longer be contained. I am She who does not depend on definitions. I am She who chooses to stand in the arena I am She whose soft breath warms the last coals of unborn hope Now is the time when those dimmest embers shine in the vast darkness. From them, fires will spread.

Green is always in style. Take action on your home, business and community with clean, lean energy.
