Happy HOMES! Gingerbread houses, tree-lined streets, peach pies, homemade noodles and the sound of a sewing machine humming in the background are some of the memories describing my happy place as a little girl. My maternal grandparents lived on a St. Louis south city street lined with gingerbread homes much like Jackie Stout's first home featured on (pages 60-65). Filling her newly purchased home with new and refurbished family heirlooms under the guidance of her mother Renee, Jackie quickly learned she could splurge on some items while saving on others to achieve a high-end look. As Asian design pops up more and more in all aspects of home design, we are thrilled to share two feature stories that are sure to delight. Fratt & Bush Home designers, Dede Fratt and Lindsay Bush beautifully execute an Asian-influenced designed home in Town and Country (pages 32-39), and our stunning garden feature wows us by incorporating a fabulous Indonesian-style, thatch-roofed bali into the landscape. From charming powder rooms to a partially enclosed wet room, St. Louis Homes + Lifestyles' winning 2020 Baths of the Year continue to amaze our judges with their innovative and creative designs (pages 20-30). Serene, dramatic, soothing, stylish and elegant are just a few words that describe the winning baths. If you are a dog owner, maybe it's time for some doggy bath inspiration too (pages 68-69)! Stay happy and healthy! Suzie Suzie Osterloh Publisher/Owner

Penny Tiles: A cousin of hexagon tiles, the penny rounds have been adorning bathrooms since the early 1900s. Timeless in design, these round tiles add texture to a space and come in a variety of colors. Cement Tiles: To amp up the WOW factor in your bath, consider using long lasting cement tiles. They can add texture and pattern to a plain space while also holding up against chips and cracks. Wood Look Tile: Wood has now made its way into the bathroom with tiles that look like wood but are made from water resistant materials.

INSIDER
Showered with Decisions Premier Plumbing Studio’s showroom manager, Betsy Hayden, tells us the dos and don’ts of bathroom remodeling and tips us off to budding plumbing trends. Edited by Moe Godat Portrait photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton Project photography by Nancy Kossmann Photography
Q A SLHL: In recent years, bathrooms have evolved from being purely functional to zen-like getaways. What bathroom features do you believe make one bathroom more relaxing than another? BETSY: Bathrooms should evoke feelings of calm, serenity and peace; not just after renovation, but every time you walk in. Put function first—no exceptions. A bathroom that functions well for you and your family is always relaxing and gratifying. Choosing fixtures that simplify your tasks is one way to accomplish this. For example, consider a single handle faucet over a traditional widespread; they can be used with one hand, they maximize counter space and they are easier to clean. Instead of installing a basic towel bar, consider upgrading to a heated towel bar—they offer both function and luxury all in one. SLHL: What is the difference between a "wet-room" and the "open-room concept?" BETSY: A wet room is where there are no walls or dividers to separate the shower and tub (sometimes this includes the vanity and toilet). Each element is exposed to one another. The entire bathroom floor is sloped, all walls are tiled and everything gets wet.
18
AUGUST 2020 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM
This concept gained momentum in Japan where very small bathrooms are the norm. An open room concept (although this can be interpreted in different ways) is where the bedroom and bathroom are designed as one. For example, in a master bath application, there would be no door to the bathroom—the shower, tub and vanity are open and viewable from the bedroom area. Usually the toilet is enclosed in a water closet. Both of these concepts are fairly unique and require thoughtfulness on the homeowners’ end to determine if they’re right for them and their lifestyle. SLHL: Several metal finishes seem to come in and out of popularity. Is there one metal finish that has stood the test of time? What metal finish are the top designers using in 2020? BETSY: Polished chrome has always stood the test of time and will always be relevant in bathroom fixtures. On the other hand, designers and trendsetters right now are gravitating towards gold: anything gold—polished, brushed, unlacquered—and also matte black. Matte black is particularly interesting because we are noticing it starting to replace oil rubbed bronze as it fits so seamlessly into the popular modern farmhouse theme.
SLHL: Do vessel sinks require a particular style of faucet to help water from splattering? BETSY: No. The vessel style itself is more important when trying to determine the “splash factor.” The goal is to find one that has some degree of slope (not a flat bottom) and has tall enough walls to contain the water while in use. The placement of the faucet is also important because all too often we see applications where the water lands directly on the drain which causes considerable splattering. If the faucet had been installed an inch closer or farther from the bowl, the water spray could avoid hitting the drain altogether. SLHL: How do you feel about the new digital products showing up in the bathroom? BETSY: Finally excited! Digital bathroom products have really evolved quickly over the past few years. They’re practical, less complicated and more intuitive for the average homeowner. Digital valving in the shower is a great option for anyone craving a serene, minimalist, spa-like look. Not only does the digital valve eliminate all the hardware once needed, it also allows the user more flexibility and control than a manual valve. As Millennials continue to grow and shape our marketplace, digital products will keep evolving and will continue to grow in popularity, and will hopefully become more mainstream as our trade communities adapt to embracing them, too. SLHL: There are so many different styles of shower heads. How does one choose what is best for them? BETSY: We get this question all the time. The issue is that the best showerhead for me may not be the best option for you. Showerheads are restricted to a maximum 2.5 gallons of water per minute. So whether you have a 12-inch overhead rainhead or a 3-inch diameter stationary showerhead, they’re technically pushing the same amount of water. The rainhead will have a wider, broader spray, but the showerhead will have a feeling of more pressure. Bigger isn’t always better in this scenario. Speak with your bathroom professional and let them guide you based on your personal needs and expectations. Try not to let online reviews and others’ opinions skew your decision. SLHL: What is an essential element in bathroom design that many homeowners overlook? BETSY: Storage. If you do not have designated areas to store your belongings, it causes unnecessary stress and clutter. It seems silly investing your money in luxurious new countertops to then have them loaded down and covered up with personal hygiene products for all to see. In my field, medicine cabinets are not only overlooked but underestimated. If you need a mirror anyway, why not have hidden storage behind it? Medicine cabinets now offer integral lighting, built-in electrical outlets, magnifying mirrors and even music. They can be recessed and framed to look just like a regular mirror. A true blend of beauty and practicality—the formula for a relaxing bathroom! See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

ADJ Interiors
Designer ADJ Interiors took careful consideration of aesthetics when designing this master bath retreat. Privacy was a big component of the design. The designer began by selecting the soft neutral paint color followed by the marble tile and cabinetry. The plan called for more feminine details than the rest of the home. On either side of the freestanding Victoria + Albert tub are hinged, frameless doors that open to a water closet on one side and lead into a dressing room on the other. The dressing room offers privacy for changing and includes a marble bench and cubby. The dressing area serves as a pass through space before entering the shower. For the designers, the master bath’s statement shower was a lesson in patience! The design process required the individual selection and placement of each Carrara marble tile. The 18” x 18” tiles were applied to the walls and were laid in a herringbone pattern on the shower floor and niche. The designers selected 4” x 18” tiles to conceal the floor drain. Why the judges love it: This space is so modern and sophisticated. We love how the designer created a light-filled space while still giving the homeowners the privacy they desired. Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath created a stylish and soothing sanctuary for these homeowners. The layout for this new bathroom was hard for the homeowners to visualize because of the tall cathedral ceiling, which required that the toilet room ceiling would need to partially float in the space. To perfectly balance the space, the floating room mimics the same size as a tall vanity cabinet which flanks the door opening. Decorative mullion mirrors on the tall vanity reflect light and open up the space. Light wood stained cabinets have an airy note with slender silhouettes and glass and mirrored designs incorporated within. The designer combined the smooth wood tones with rich marble tiles in the wainscoting woodwork, trim and paint colors. An unexpected touch is the painted woodwork

ceiling, which adds dimensions to the space. The crown molding was matched for both tall columns. To enrich the look and feel of a retreat, the designer chose gorgeous accents like the glimmering polished nickel sconces, gilded gold chandelier and beautiful Schumacher fabric Roman window shades. The resulting master bath has a lived-in feel while at the same time being luxurious. Why the judges love it: This master bath is elegant and liveable. We love the detailed ceiling and window treatments. The stain on the cabinetry gives the room a simple elegance. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Photographie by Li.

ADJ Interiors This classic master bath designed by ADJ Interiors is wrapped from head to toe in 18” x 18” Calacatta Gold polished marble tiles. The dual crafted vanity stations are adorned with mirror-mounted sconces, polished nickel plumbing fixtures and Calacatta Gold marble tops. The stations flank double doors that lead to the master closet. A freestanding soaker tub with a floor-mounted filler is framed by an arched window set in marble casing and finished with inset custom-colored shutters that allow privacy. A curbless entry shower allows for easy access for users of any age. The shower walls have glass from floor to ceiling, which gives the elegant and luxurious bath an open feel. Why the judges love it: We love that this classic design works for all ages. The his and hers layout in the bath is well done, and the crown molding and tile on the ceiling give the space a luxurious feel. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Marcia Moore Design The goal of this powder room was to create the feeling of walking into a cocoon of glamour. Designer Marcia Moore Design removed a soffit, an unused closet and an awkward half wall to give this small room a feeling of spaciousness. While square footage was added, space constraints still dictated every design decision and required detailed measurements for exact fit. The stunning Cole & Son wallpaper set the color palette for the powder room. By adding metallic gold to the ceiling and painting the trim and existing plantation shutters to match the wallpaper background, the room became cocooned in warmth and glamour. Large, dark porcelain tile grounds the room and continues into the hallway. The space between the wall and entry door was shallow, so a standard 15-deep wall cabinet was used with just enough room to spare for the granite counter overhang

and a vessel sink. A touch latch mechanism on the vanity doors allows the cabinet to appear as one large slab of wood for a sleek look. The mirror intersects with the vanity and stretches from floor to ceiling. Under cabinet lighting creates the illusion of a larger footprint. To finish off the space, a swirling sconce and organic-shaped gold vessel sink accomplish the goal of moody glamour. Why the judges love it: You can tell the designer thought out every detail in this space. The gold accents paired with the dark interior make the space significant and dramatic. ADJ Interiors This powder room designed by ADJ Interiors is dramatic yet unintimidating with the charm of a European bath. Carrara marble cascades across the room and seamlessly covers the floor and wainscoting creating a nostalgic feeling of the past. The Waterworks washstand echos the sentiment with a Carrara slab top and polished nickel fixtures. To add texture and interest to the otherwise clean and uncomplicated tone-on-tone color scheme, the designer chose a damask silver and white wallpaper. A built-in barrister’s cabinet adds
discreet storage and refined ornamentation to this lavish powder room. Why the judges love it: This powder room exudes a feeling of functional elegance as the space is classic and clean while still having fine, luxurious finishes. Tamsin Design Group & Forney Plus Architects The homeowners of this newly constructed master bath worked with Tamsin Design Group and Forney Plus Architects to design their new space to look like an elegant European spa. The floor plan was designed to showcase the views of a nature reserve adjacent the property. Three unobstructed windows in the walk-in shower allow the homeowners to take in the beautiful scenes outside. Arched doorways lead into a large, open concept shower with a transom window on the plumbing wall that allows natural light to fill the space. The shower is fully equipped with a shower system including dual shower heads, a rain shower head and multiple body sprays. His-and-hers vanities were custom made to provide ample storage and classic details. A black Victoria + Albert claw foot tub sits in front an intricate marble patterned tile wall framed with heavy marble molding. The same marble pattern is carried into the border in the shower room. The entire bath is encased in Calcutta marble to achieve the European spa-look the homeowners desired. Painted a silvery shade, a domed ceiling creates a dramatic architectural effect. The level of detail in every aspect makes for a well-thought-out, masterful design. Why the judges love it: We love the symmetrical layout of this master bath. The subtle details make all of the difference in the overall design. The black tub base really pops in the space. The designer did a wonderful job accessorizing the space. C&M Interiors & Hamtil Construction When it was time to redesign their existing master bath, these homeowners relied on C&M Interiors and Hamtil Construction to create a sophisticated retreat that would rework the original floor plan to include their wants without disturbing the footprint of the master bedroom. Their main requests were a double vanity with smart storage, a large shower, freestanding tub and a formal but updated vibe. With limited space, the designers had to be smart to accommodate the client’s need for a tub and a shower. The final solution was a flawlessly executed partially enclosed wet room. The marble basketweave floors, large frameless shower glass and strategically placed custom painted black vanity give the space the requested informal but luxurious feel. Other distinctive features include a traditional clawfoot tub, a sunken beveled-edge countertop within the custom vanity, full wainscoting throughout and original artwork within the water closet. Why the judges love it: The designers made use of a tricky space by incorporating a wet room to combine both bathing areas into one. We loved the hidden niche and floating counter shelf. The window fits well in the space. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by CH Studios.

Castle Design & MDG Renovation This serene master bath was created by and for an acclaimed St. Louis interior designer’s home who wanted to create the ultimate tranquil bath experience with luxury finishes and endless clever storage solutions. Castle Design in conjunction with MDG Renovation gave the designer everything she hoped for. The soothing color palette was inspired by the designer’s favorite coastal destinations. The Phillip Jeffries Fade wallpaper in the sea spray colorway mirrors the ocean while the delicate porcelain tile mimics sand with its subtle texture. The faceted bathtub is inspired by the natural curves of seashells. With thoughtful space planning, the designers were able to maximize the 135-square-foot bath. Placing the tub across from the vanity gives an open, airy appeal, while the shower becomes its own separate space. A frosted glass panel creates a privacy niche for the toilet area. Organic materials were selected to add warmth to the space and honor the home’s tropical Asian architecture. The cabinetry features rich walnut detailing and modular, clean-lined design. Functionality abounds in the bath as the cabinets provide ample storage from the wall-mounted vanity and linear medicine cabinet to the floating base cabinet. Challenged by an existing angled beam ceiling, the designer incorporated natural walnut molding to frame the entire space and add subtle separation from the ceiling above. Why the judges love it: This spa-like bath is so sophisticated with the use of angled beams and stained walnut. We love how clean and streamlined the look is while the colors and textures add interest. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Alise O’Brien Photography.

The designer chose the striking and unique Cole & Son’s Acquario wallpaper. Its whimsical composition and scale adds the eclectic touch the homeowners desired while the ink color palette gives it the classic feel of Italian artist Piero Fornasetti. To further the impact of the wallcovering, the designer painted all the trim and interior door to match the ink-colored background. Dramatic, black porcelain tile ties together the dark walls and light quartzite top on the vanity through its classic white veining. The solid Parthenon quartzite vanity and sink were custom made to fit the powder room space. The mitered

edges allow for continuity in the veining. A stunning brass-and-crystal chandelier that was original to the room pairs perfectly with the brushed gold finish on the mirror and wall-mounted faucet. The careful attention to detail in this small space resulted in a cohesive, on-trend powder room that reflects the homeowner’s style while fitting into the classic home. Why the judges love it: The designer utilized the small space well. The custom floating sink is a nice touch. The wallpaper gives the powder room a limitless feel with a touch of imagination making you feel as though you are underwater. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. he owners of this Town and Country home love entertaining and family parties. After living in the home for many years, the couple built a beautiful outdoor entertaining space in a European style that feels relaxed yet elegant. The overwhelming success of the outdoor space called for renovation phase two—transforming the home’s public areas into a similarly sophisticated, gracious entertaining space. For the indoor renovations, the owners turned to a longtime acquaintance, Lindsay Bush, and her business partner Dede Fratt of Fratt & Bush Home. The owners call the outdoor living area Piazza Katarina—so named for their love of Italy and the Italian sensibility of gracious outdoor living. With its limestone pillars, wood ceiling and outdoor fireplace, “it’s very sophisticated, the kind of place you want to linger with your coffee, and you could easily see somewhere in Italy,” says Fratt. “Katarina” is a play on the homeowner’s name. Fratt says she and Bush were asked to bring the same sophistication and Euro-inspired sensibilities into the home’s interiors, while incorporating the homeowner’s extensive collection of chinoiserie. “We have multiple Asian influences in our home as I traveled extensively in Asia early in my career and we love combining styles,” says the wife.

Design work began in the kitchen. The homeowner fell in love with a Lacanche range in French blue. “It’s a major cooking stove,” Fratt says of the centuries-old French brand. The wife is already a good cook, Fratt says, but the homeowner wanted to improve her skills even more. At the same time, the homeowner had always wanted an all-white kitchen to highlight her blue and white china. Collaborating with Mike Beck of Beck/Allen Cabinetry, Fratt and Bush reconfigured the kitchen, eliminating all existing cabinetry and the original island.

The designers removed a mullion window and fitted a larger picture window shaped to mimic a design element in the piazza. They installed a large, marble-topped island, running it parallel to the stove. Upon entering the room, the eye is drawn immediately along the island to the window, which frames the view of the piazza. A second, "entertaining" island at pub-table height was added; it acts as a buffer between the kitchen and the adjoining hearth room. In its original iteration, the designers felt the hearth room “had a lot
The Lacanche stove in French blue, the homeowner’s admiration of white kitchens and her desire to highlight her blue and white Asian pieces drove the redesign of the kitchen. Terracotta chairs were recovered in a blue and white Talavera fabric from Brunschwig & Fils. A Ralph Lauren light is trimmed in leather to coordinate with a new leather sectional. An archway on the built-in bookcase mimics the shape of the new kitchen window. The fireplace, originally a red brick, was clad in limestone to meld with the limestone used in the piazza just steps away. Such customization “adds interest and gives it personal detail,”
Fratt says. “Everything about the room feels different.” In the living room, the owners wanted a gracious entertaining space where guests would feel equally at home wearing jeans or decked out in their holiday finery. Fratt and Bush delivered, utilizing the blue and white color scheme with pops of black and navy. The room is large, with 25-foot ceilings, plenty of space for a baby grand piano and several areas Fratt calls “pods.” She says she likes to create intimate pockets for conversation within larger rooms. Chic yet relaxed with an element of fun, the living room’s makeover included new custom sofas covered in a creamy white Highland House fabric. The mirror over the fireplace had originally extended the mantel to the ceiling. Ceiling fans were also removed and replaced with statement brass lights. The Chinese folding screen, hung above the sofa, is from the homeowner’s collection.

Some of the homeowner’s Asian art was inherited from her mother and grandparents, while other pieces were purchased on business trips. Above a Highland House custom sofa in creamy white, the designers hung a Chinese folding screen from the homeowner’s collection. “Hanging it gives the piece great presence rather than using it as a room divider,” Fratt explains. “It is a beautiful piece of art, but we used it AS a piece of art.” On the opposite wall, the designers placed a beloved painting the homeowner affectionally calls “The Ancestors” above a smaller sofa. “It’s a Chinese dynasty, a beautiful piece which is quite large—probably six feet wide and eight or nine feet tall,” says Fratt. “The homeowner has a very sophisticated sense of style.” The homeowner’s love of blue and white is fully displayed in the powder room. doorknobs to pop. Fratt added the Monrovian star light in the hallway outside the powder room. “Teeny tweaks like these just change everything,” Fratt says of custom touches. With phase two complete, the homeowner praises Fratt and Bush for their work. “I engaged smart, savvy women to bring ideas, textures, fabrics and light fixtures together in a way that is sophisticated and welcoming,” she says. She advises other homeowners embarking on major remodels to “always engage witty, brilliant women to make you laugh and bring fun to your project.” Fratt agrees the project was a joy. “They were just so welcoming of our ideas and really wanted to put the vision in place,” Fratt says of the homeowners. “They were happy to think out of their own box on some of our ideas. The four of us—Lindsay and I and the homeowners —really had a good time on this project.” The fun continues in phase three as Bush and Fratt tackle renovations of the master bedroom and bathroom. “We’ll be making it more spa-like, a lovely getaway from everyday living,” says Fratt. “Lindsay and I really love what we do, which is helping people love their homes even more.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

One thing leads to another Plans for remodeling the kitchen of this West County residence evolved into a whole-home renovation.

Tina Perry is an excellent cook, and husband Mike wanted to celebrate her culinary skills with a brand-new kitchen. The couple’s gracious Colonial 1.5-story had been custom-built for them 23 years ago, and the kitchen was due for updating. The salute was also a logical choice for Michael Perry, since he’s president of HBD Construction, an award-winning St. Louis general contracting and construction management firm founded in 1922. As plans for the renovation began, the Perrys’ first decision was to remove a rear staircase, extending one kitchen wall to create more cabinet space. At this point, the project became more complex when Mike

realized the wall was load-bearing, and they’d have to shore up the second floor for the kitchen ceiling. Working with Beck/Allen Cabinetry, the couple had already selected an elegant, raised-panel style that would establish the look they were going for, but it was time to bring in a design specialist. Beck/ Allen recommended ADJ Interiors, a full-service St. Louis-based group with a truly unique approach to high-end interior design. ADJ founder April Jensen describes her team as “storytellers.” The objective, she explains, is to discover the clients’ story—how they experience day-to-day living in their home. The goal then becomes

“She opened our eyes, challenged us, and one thing led to another.” interpreting that story to design authentic spaces that will offer the homeowners comfort and “livable luxury” for years to come. In other words, creating a personalized aesthetic with longevity is far more important than pursuing the latest “fashion trends.” April quickly grasped the Perrys’ vision for their new kitchen: traditional but more streamlined, and with a “wow” factor. She suggested glazing the ecru-colored cabinetry to emphasize its multiple layers, adding light-hued quartzite countertops. An expansive L-shaped island, with espresso-stained cherry base and rich honed quartzite surface, would provide a dramatic contrast, putting Tina “on stage” when entertaining family and guests. By now, though, the design process had begun to take on a life of its own. “April is extremely talented, and we came to trust her,” Mike observed. “She opened our eyes, challenged us, and one thing led to another.” As a result, what had begun as a kitchen renovation evolved into a complete makeover of the home’s main floors, including the great room, hearth room, breakfast room, laundry and cook’s bath, formal powder room, first-floor master suite and entire upstairs privacy level. “We just decided to go big or go home,” Tina quips. Construction started in February of 2018, and the couple moved to their finished lower level for the duration. “They were troopers!” April remarked, noting that having all the participants onsite was actually a benefit, since collaboration is a key element of ADJ Interiors’ design philosophy.
Left: Botanical wallpaper, an antique brass mirror, and a porcelain washstand with brass base give the cook’s bath an airy, organic look. Right: Overlooking the scenic outdoor entertainment area, the bayed breakfast room and hearth room epitomize the blend of comfort and elegance the owners hoped to achieve. Grouped around a glass-topped coffee table with metal latticework, the hearth room’s seating includes a cozy tweed armchair and well-cushioned linen sofa.

Ultimately, the home’s only remaining original components were the roof, windows and doors. Flooring was replaced with rift and quarter-sawn white oak; 5-inch millwork, new casings, and lighting fixtures were installed, and even the doors were fitted with new hardware. By this stage, it became obvious that all-new furnishings would be necessary to complement the home’s refreshed, airy ambience, and ADJ designer Meagan Cooperman joined the team, choosing the finishes, accessories and details that would pull the project together. As April puts it, “Meagan ties everything up with a pretty bow.” Now lavished with floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, the kitchen showcases an exquisite seed-glass leaded window, custom range hood, top-of-the-line Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, Waterstone faucets in antique pewter and a graceful archway leading to the main hall. The island is lit by oversize seed glass pendants and, under the overhang, black bentwood chairs provide seating for her hungry fans. The owners wanted their 2-story great room to be elegant but comfortable and usable for any occasion. To achieve this effect, the caramel-colored Hancock & Moore leather sofa is paired with plush swivel chairs in smoky-toned velvet and lightweight Chippendale-style side chairs that can be easily rearranged. Various occasional tables add a modern touch, and drapery panels in a dusky ecru/indigo lattice print soften the dramatic architectural windows that overlook the lush backyard and patio, pergola, hot tub and outdoor kitchen. To further simplify entertaining, the knee wall of the original wet bar was removed, converting it to more of a butler’s pantry, outfitted with cherry cabinets, a quartzite countertop and a Sub-Zero wine cooler. Off the kitchen, the bayed breakfast room also has gorgeous views of the outdoor entertainment area and opens to the newly furnished hearth room. This inviting fireside gathering space reinforces the home’s bright, airy palette with a fawn-hued damask window treatment, linen sofa and indigo accent pillows, comfy armchair in indigo tweed and a sculptural cut-and-loop wool area rug. Topped with charcoal-tinted glass, the coffee table adds visual interest with its metal latticework base. Throughout the entire renovation process, April was sensitive to the owners’ individual preferences. “Mike leans toward darker woods and colors, and Tina’s taste tends to be more feminine,” says the designer, “so we paid careful attention to the jointly shared spaces.”

Bold-patterned drapes and grasscloth wallcovering add visual texture to the master bedroom’s simple-but-sophisticated ambience. The dark velvet headboard is a dramatic contrast with the all-white custom bedding, mirrored Vanguard side chests, soft-striped swivel chair, and light-hued cut and loop carpeting.
A sophisticated blend of masculine and feminine elements, the main-floor master suite is a prime example. Bold-patterned drapes and Phillip Jeffries grasscloth wallcovering establish an intriguing backdrop for the bedroom’s dark velvet, hobnail-detailed headboard. In contrast, the bedding is all-white, with a softly gathered custom bed skirt. The Vanguard dresser and side chests are mirrored, reflecting the light tones of the linens and low-textured carpeting. Above the dresser, a large round mirror framed in blue Capiz shells is an eye-catching statement piece. In the master bath, the rarely used tub was removed and replaced with a luxury shower. Set diagonally, multi-shaded 12”x 12” tiles line
the walls, and the architectural vanities are traditionally-styled in dark cherry with granite surfaces. Opposite is a separate makeup vanity for Tina, and among the other attractive appointments are a window seat and transitional sconces installed on the vanity mirrors. So, does Mike have any regrets about a tribute to his wife that expanded beyond his wildest imaginings? Absolutely not! The Perrys are now enjoying a stunning residence, totally refurbished and well-suited to their lifestyle for years to come. “We couldn’t have done it without April’s vision,” he concludes, “and we wouldn’t change a thing!” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

here are thousands of places around the world where writers and historians have declared that East meets West. A house and garden in Clayton, MO, is not likely to be on that list. But it should be. Ward and Carol Klein’s home is a stunning infusion of Asian design and appreciation in the heart of the Midwest. Their Craftsman-style home had always had hints of compatibility with Japanese design as evidenced in Frank LLoyd Wright’s Prairie Style and California Craftsman homes of the same period. But before the Kleins and their two children, ages 10 and 13, moved to Hong Kong in 1999, those were just suggestions. As Area Chairman of Operations Asia Pacific, for Energizer Holdings, Ward traveled extensively during the two years they lived in Hong Kong. The couple also used every opportunity to travel with their children. The more they saw of Asia, the most fascinated they became with the architecture with its horizontal lines, graceful curves, symmetry and harmony with the environment. They loved the emphasis on nature and natural beauty; of finding beauty in unexpected places and bringing spirituality into their homes and gardens. The couple had rented their Clayton home while they were in Asia, and when they returned home in 2001, they decided it needed renovation both inside and out. Their newly found love of Asian design influenced much of that renovation including the creation of a backyard pool. “We didn’t want just a rectangular pool; we wanted something unique,” Carol says. Carol had been collecting pictures of the type of outdoor space she wanted, including the landscape that surrounded it. Important to that design was an Indonesian-style, open-air,

thatch-roofed platform or bali designed for relaxation and positioned to catch the slightest breeze. She also wanted something in the design to suggest the volcanic nature of many of the Asian islands. To make their oasis come alive, they contacted landscape architect Ted Spaid, founder of SWT Design. “We had a lot of pictures and we worked with a lot of talented people, Carol says of the design process. While Ted worked on the landscaping and pool, architect Mark Critchfield concentrated on the bali. Creativity was all important. Not sure what they would do with it, Carol and Ward had lugged a carved wood table on the plane home with them. Miraculously, it found its way to the bali with the surface of the table becoming a ceiling medallion at the top of the structure and the carved table legs incorporated into

the bali’s corner supports. Thatch for the roof came by way of a company in San Diego that sells grassy roof tiles. Rather than spouting into the pool, the couple’s waterfall slides down a black, slate surface. Just in front of the waterfall, Ted designed a series of stepping stones that seem to float on the surface of the water and bring a visitor across the pool to the serenity of the bali. A living, leafy screen of fluttering bamboo catches the breeze behind the bali and provides the compatible landscaping that Carol desired. Mindful of bamboo’s invasive character, Ward emphasizes that it needed to be professionally installed with the proper barriers to keep it in check. A multi-level deck of tropical hardwoods connects the house to the
pool area and adds an additional feeling of serenity to the space. Carol has coordinated the blue cushions of the bali with the pool tiles and the table settings that she uses to entertain. Most of the items that decorate her tables are things she brought back from their two years in Hong Kong. While Carol specialized in the design of the pool and bali, Ward acted as the plantsman for the project. With a love of gardening he traces back to the magical hours spent in his grandmother Klein’s terraced garden overlooking the Racoon River in Des Moines, IA, he had two different projects to deal with. One was the creation of a tropical paradise in the spaces surrounding the pool. The other, a lush shady border was called for in the rest of the yard.

A berm-like raised bed, created from the dirt remaining when the workers dug out the pool, provided the perfect place for Ward to experiment with sun loving plants. This year, elephant ears and cannas are part of the mix along with daylilies and irises. Pots of brilliantly colored hibiscus and oleander accent the pool deck as do the three plumeria trees, created from cuttings the Kleins brought back with them from Hong Kong. Best known for its fragrant flowers used to create Hawaiian leis, the Kleins have found their plumeria easy to care for even in the frigid Midwest. As winter approaches, Ward explains, the plumeria goes dormant and into the basement, where the pots sit without water or sunshine until spring. Once the pots are brought out in spring, watered and fertilized, the plants magically produce leaves and begin flowering. Like the sun garden, Ward created the shade garden from scratch, first removing layers of invasive honeysuckle. In its place, he created undulating beds anchored with azaleas, viburnums, hydrangeas, witch hazel and holly. Ferns and hostas accent the middle of the beds with shots of color from impatiens and

variegated lamium toward the front. He also has inserted into the mix more unusual shrubs such as “Sun King” Aralia with its bright gold leaves and “Gold Dust” Aucuba, which sports glossy green leaves liberally sprinkled with yellow spots. “Double Delights Stargazer” lacecap hydrangeas, with layered pink blossoms edged in white are new to his shady areas this year. Even in the shade garden, the couple’s love of things Asian comes through with the insertion along the pathway of Balinese, carved, wooden sculptures. A spirit house to provide a space for protective spirits to dwell sits on an old tree trunk and is decorated with a floral lei as offering to please the spirits as it would be in Thailand. A little further on, a tiny carved wooden Balinese sculpture, nestled in among some impatiens, is also decorated with flowers. Carol loves tucking random blossoms into ordinary things, such as a basket of towels, to create beauty in unexpected places. While the Kleins’ garden and the surrounding setting is a tribute to the grace and serenity of Asia, it did not come about without some American hard work. When it came time to mulch the yard, Ward spread all 14 cubic yards himself and considered it a substitute for his normal gym workout. “I logged over 35,000 steps in two days and I never left the yard,” he says with a laugh. DESIGNING HER DAUGHTER’S DREAM HOME Mom knows best when it comes to decorating a South City home. By Melissa Mauzy Photography by Anne Matheis

In August 2019, St. Louis native and young professional Jackie Stout decided it was time to fly the family coop and purchase a home of her own. There was no question her parents, Renee and Brad, would play an integral role in helping with the search, purchase and decorating. They started the process by pulling up open house listings based on Jackie’s price range. The first house she looked at was in Brentwood, and while she liked it just fine she felt no connection. On their second outing, the sparks flew! “As soon as we pulled into the neighborhood, I felt like I belonged here,” Jackie says. “Walking up to the house I said ‘We’re going to paint the front door purple.’” Jackie and her parents loved how vibrant the neighborhood felt noting there were people walking dogs and pushing strollers. “It is full of a mix of young people, starter families and older couples. Everyone is so friendly,” says Renee. Jackie loved how safe the area was and that she could walk to restaurants. Once inside the recently rehabbed home, her feeling was further confirmed that this was the house for her. “Literally every room I walked in I felt a belonging to,” Jackie says. But she knew she had to do her due diligence in checking out other options. After looking at nearly a dozen, none compared to the South City home. “I also loved that out of all of the houses we looked at, this was one of two my dad actually saw in person. It was important he was part of this experience too,” Jackie explains.

“What I love isn’t necessarily a room or a piece but that my mom brought it all together from love. It means so much to me,” Jackie says. “ As soon as her offer was accepted, plans got underway to furnish and decorate the home. Renee has a degree in interior design, but she says life took her in a different direction and she never put it to professional use. She has been fortunate to help family and friends with design consults through the years and was so honored to get to help Jackie. “The decorating was a complete labor of love and collaboration,” Renee says. “Jacqueline was a dream client.” Since Jackie was moving from her family home, she had nothing to work around or with, which Renee says was both a blessing and a curse. While they didn’t have any specific pieces to work around, they also had to start from scratch to furnish an entire home. “Great attention was put to where to splurge and where to spare,” Renee adds. While Renee had dozens of ideas swimming in her head as they were on the house hunt, her first order of business for the new home’s décor was sending Jackie pictures of vignettes, both modern and traditional. To Renee’s surprise, Jackie had strong and immediate reactions to the choices, which was a huge help in knowing what direction to take her home. “Jacqueline has as strong aversion to anything modern,” Renee notes. So traditional they went with a chinoiserie influence. From the get go, Jackie entrusted the whole design process to her mom. She didn’t want to be involved with that aspect. “I wanted my house to look the best it could look, and I knew with my mom’s talents she would make it spectacular,” Jackie explains. To which Renee adds, “Jacqueline has the most amazing, happy spirit, and I wanted her home to reflect that.” Jackie has been drawn to the color purple her entire life, so Renee suggested a combination of blues and greens with purple accents for the color scheme. While Jackie loves color and drama, Renee knew that given the size of the home they needed to paint the walls in the entry, living room and dining rom white to make the space feel as spacious as it could. With the entry, living and dining rooms all connected, the design elements had to work together and complement one another. Renee found a beautiful rug with a watercolor look that was the anchor that married their color scheme. The first rug she had selected for the dining room was solid, but she replaced it with one with bold colors and pattern to give the dining room high drama and whimsy. They splurged on custom pale blue draperies with a ribbon pattern and curtain rods in the living and dining rooms. Beautiful blue and white vases bring in the chinoiserie influence. “I found a lot of great décor pieces at the Rusted Chandelier,” Renee notes. Furnishings include more economical pieces purchased online, refurbished family heirlooms and beautiful new fabrics. “I wanted to show Jacqueline that you can put money

in certain places and save on other pieces but still have a high-end look,” Renee explains. The Resplendent Crow refurbished Jackie’s grandmother’s dining room cabinet and buffet in a vibrant Kelly green high-gloss lacquer to bring new life to an otherwise dated piece. Perhaps the piece de resistance in the home are the amazing Oscar de la Renta dining room chairs Renee lucked into at Cool Stuff. “OMG! What a find!” She enthuses. “They took the room to a new level. We covered them in a navy suede.” The kitchen inherited a serene gray palette found in other places throughout the house. Renee changed out the hardware to keep gold finishes throughout Jackie’s home. For added storage, a long buffet was refinished by Resplendent Crow. Hung above is a poster of “The Golden Girls”, Jackie’s favorite TV women who bring her joy. Also hung in the kitchen is a painting of a chef that went to Ole Miss with Jackie. The sunroom delivers on Jackie’s request for fun and drama. Renee chose a flowered colorful rug and used fun, colorful pillows on an aqua couch. Cheery yellow club chairs finish off the room, which is packed with vibrance and happiness. A total change from the bold colors of the rest of her home,
Renee kept Jackie’s two bedrooms serene with a calming color palette. In the master, she chose white bedding and hints of lavender in the accents. For the guest room, she used the same white bedding but added bold, dramatic flowers to the walls. “Jacqueline wanted a room her sorority sisters would want to visit,” Renee explains. “I think we managed to make the room inviting, restful and fun.” Jackie appreciates how intentional every piece in her home is and how quickly the whole place came together. For Renee, the best part of the experience was the bonding with her daughter. “For me there is no greater joy than making her home a place she will love and be proud of. I share my love of design with my mother. I felt her with me on this journey, and I know she loves that some of her pieces are now in her granddaughter’s home,” Renee says. “What I love isn’t necessarily a room or a piece but that my mom brought it all together from love. It means so much to me,” Jackie says. “She created a warm, happy home for me.” And in true Renee fashion, the front door was painted Jackie’s favorite color purple within an hour of closing on the home! 1. Luxurious Laundry By Dina Bandman Interiors. Designed for the 2017 San Francisco Showcase
"Laundering in the Lap of Luxury" is the ultimate laundry retreat featuring a bath area for the pampered pooch of the house. Enveloped in de Gournay's "Thousand Li" wallpaper, this space is meant to make the chore of laundry loads of fun. No reason to sacrifice luxury for practicality when you can have it all. This multifunctional space features not only the essential washer and dryer, but a sink, hanging rod, shelves for storing cleaning supplies and plenty of storage. 2. Top Wish By Jana Valdez, Principal Interior Designer, Haven Design and Construction.
This fun and functional dog shower was at the top of the clients' wish list during their home renovation. The floor to ceiling wall tile not only adds texture and interest, but it also makes cleaning up after bathing pets a breeze. The seamless quartz shower curb is both beautiful and durable. Octagon tiles repeat the transitional design and color scheme of the home. 3. Muddy Paws Be Gone By Traci Zeller Interiors. This laundry room includes a dog shower so the
4
homeowners could bathe their dog. The door leads to the spacious back yard, so if the dog gets muddy, he can come in and be washed before going through the house. Of course, the shower does double duty as a place to hang clothing to dry. The robin’s egg blue cabinets add liveliness, and the wallpaper is, of course, a salute to man’s best friend. The outlined silhouettes of dogs makes the wallpaper fresh and modern, and it serves as the perfect complement to the classic white subway tile with black grout. 4. Those Lucky Dogs By Amy Storm & Company. With a turf covered back yard, you would think the
two resident 65-pound dogs wouldn’t get all that dirty, but every speck of dirt shows on their white fur. Hence the need for a dog shower in the mudroom. The designer went all out, complete with hand sprayer, swinging glass doors and walls clad in tile because when the dogs are wet, they don’t sit quietly and drip dry. 5. Tons of Storage By Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. Wellborn Cabinet’s Premier Series was used throughout
this design, with the Saybrook door style in maple and finished in the newly launched gray mist with a granite glaze. The gray tones are at the core of any contemporary interior scheme and provide the crisp and clean foundations needed to incorporate the look. The green tiling and wall color are subtle accent colors, which enhance the overarching contemporary feel. 1. Photography by Christopher Stark. 2. Photography by Matthew Niemann Photography. 3. SPOTLIGHT
Prairie Styling Redux Contemporary Prairie designs reflect Frank Lloyd Wright’s “yearning for simplicity.”
By Barb Wilson Photography by Anne Matheis Architect: Schaub+Srote Architects Builder: Tegethoff Homes

AUGUST 2020 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM
Prior to the turn of the 20th century, American architects looked to Europe for inspiration. Then came the Prairie School. Founded in 1893 and most commonly associated with Frank Lloyd Wright, Prairie design was a radical departure from anything seen before and is generally recognized as the first original and uniquely American style of architecture. Key elements of this innovative concept focused on strong horizontal lines and geometric shapes, low-pitched or flat roofs, minimal ornamentation, overhanging eaves, window placement that capitalized on natural sunlight and ventilation, open, free-flowing floor plans and the use of organic, earthy materials that made the structure seem to blend into—or grow from—the landscape. Prairie styling flourished until about 1920 and paved the way for subsequent genres from Craftsman to Modern. But Wright’s basic principles of “organic architecture”—simplicity, spaciousness, natural materials and integration of interior spaces with the outdoors—are as evident in today’s Contemporary Prairie home designs as they were then. In architectural terms, “Contemporary” means “of the moment,” and modern construction techniques and materials have contributed to the resurgence of Prairie styling. For example, elevations can still be one- or two-story, but walkout lower levels now allow for additional square footage and further extension of the living space to the surrounding environment. Side-entry garages also permit attached vehicle storage without disrupting the home’s clean, horizontal planes. The emphasis, however, remains on shallow rooflines, overhanging eaves and/or cantilevers and natural exterior materials. Wood, stone and brick are typical, but stucco and even siding can be incorporated. Interior layouts continue to be simple, open and asymmetric with tall or ribbon windows, built-in cabinetry and often a centrally located fireplace. Designed for comfort and convenience, Contemporary Prairie versions are well-suited to open island kitchens and can also include more traditional private spaces, such as a study or sunroom. As for interior décor, the trend is still minimal with limited use of color and very little pattern or ornamentation. Nevertheless, today’s designs blend well with various styles of furnishings, from transitional to modern, particularly those in natural textiles, earth tones, stone and glass. Japanese-inspired accents, vintage art-glass windows and lighting fixtures, and geometric, botanical and Southwestern motifs are consistent with the Prairie vibe, as well. Whether you’re in the market for a modestly-sized or luxury home, Contemporary Prairie styling offers the perfect backdrop—elegant in its simplicity and easily adaptable to a wide range of aesthetic preferences. PALM SPRINGS SPLENDOR St. Louis designer Steve Toedebusch takes this extraordinary California Spanish ranch-style dwelling in Old Las Palmas down to bare bones for the ultimate modern makeover. By Jeanne Delathouder
Photography courtesy of Louise Hampton
Interior Designer: Toedebusch Design Engineer: Cass Rogers
“This is a new house in an old shell,” says Steve Toedebusch, founder and owner of Toedebusch Design, who has been an interior designer both in St. Louis and Palm Springs for more than 30 years. “The house was built in 1951 and endured a lot of additions over the years. We wanted to bring it back to its former California Spanish ranch style, which was the original style of house,” he adds. “The homeowner—a client I worked with here and in St. Louis on his penthouse—was moving to Palm Springs full time and had a lot of creative input with specific tastes that were mostly modern and contemporary.” Situated in the heart of Old Las Palmas, a legendary neighborhood known for its lavish movie-star residences—Leonardo DiCaprio lives around the corner—this exquisite home mixes well with the classic older homes in the area. Within walking distance of art galleries, designer boutiques and chic eateries, the historic locale is also backdropped by the scenic San Jacinto Mountains. “I worked with an architectural engineer redrawing the new plans for the home,” says Steve. “The house was cut down to the studs, but we wanted to keep the original bones because we felt it would be more interesting. People in Palm Springs love lots of shade, so we designed breezy, open-air porches with steel columns we had plastered with stucco. The porch floors are paved with red limestone, as is the front walk. We also created a guest house 10 feet away from the main structure on the south side so visitors could enjoy complete privacy,” he adds.

The team also made the home highly energy efficient with state-of-the-art insulation that keeps the interiors cool even in the intense heat of summer. They also brought the structure back to modern earthquake standards with new footings and other earthquakeproofing technology throughout the entire home. Oak hardwood floors were added throughout befitting the home’s rustic contemporary style and three magnificent fireplaces—one in the family room and one in the master bedroom—create striking focal points. The original eight-foot flat ceilings were taken out and replaced with 15-foot vaulted ceilings in both the family room and living room. “Some of the beams in the living room are hollow to hide the electrical wiring,” says Steve. “The beams are actually made of oak planks that are mitered together in the corners and stained a rich, dark brown. We also designed a beautiful tray ceiling for the dining room,” he adds. For the interior palette, Steve decided on a neutral theme to complement the lush green hues of the landscape outside as well as the homeowner’s colorful rugs and vibrant modern artwork. An avid collector of contemporary works and pop art, his favorites include two

Peter Max paintings—one in the entrance hall and one in the study—a Jeff Koons dog sculpture on the kitchen counter, various metal figure sculptures by Luis Efe Velez and the dining room’s striking pieces that resemble the graphic comic-book creations of Roy Lichtenstein. “The homeowner also brought in some spectacular mid-century modern pieces that we mixed with contemporary Baker furniture,” says Steve. “I like to use window treatments to soften things up a bit, so we applied draperies everywhere and used woven shades to create texture and softness. The stained cherry kitchen cabinets were purchased in St. Louis and pair perfectly with the beige-brown granite countertops. All the bathrooms have granite countertops as well, along with elegant marble flooring. We used a lot of muted golden tones throughout to go with the scheme, which I call ‘sophisticated desert,’” he laughs.

When revamping the patio area, the team decided to leave the same shape of the original pool but added a sunning area on one side with umbrellas and a spa in the pool with fountain jets. A terracotta-colored stained concrete surface around the pool as well as an inviting lanai complement the home’s original Spanish style. The desert landscape includes several species of cactus at the homeowner’s request, and there is also a huge side yard for his dogs. “I loved creating a seamless indoor-outdoor environment for this client, who is a casual entertainer and loves to be outside,” says Steve. “Also, one of my fondest memories of working on this project was partnering with the architectural engineer. We worked together for hours and got all the permits from the city, which is very strict. It was fun for me because I got to be the architect when there really wasn’t an architect,” he laughs. CLASSIC OR CRAZE
A WINNING COMBINATION Wet rooms allow homeowners to combine their walk-in shower and bathtub into a smaller space. But do the pros outweigh the cons? Local design professionals give their opinions on whether the wet room is here to stay or if its popularity will dry up. Edited by Moe Godat
CLASSIC
The wet bath is an important design development, and I think it will become a classic. This approach is a great solution for clients with physical limitations and smaller spaces that can benefit from continuous flooring material, helping enlarge the feel of the space. The Japanese have embraced this concept for years. As the American population ages, this is a great solution to eliminate trip hazards and open bathing spaces for when assistance is necessary. For the design savvy, the wet bath allows a blending between bathing and showering spaces and sleek materials, and often the elimination of glass panels, reducing daily maintenance. Robert Idol, Idol Design. Wet rooms are appealing because you can include both a walk-in shower and a freestanding tub in a much smaller space by enclosing them together behind glass. No longer do you have to decide between a tub/shower combo or a shower alone. It adds flexibility, luxury and style. It’s a design feature that can easily land anywhere on the spectrum between traditional and contemporary, and I think it will quickly become a new classic. Allison Dozier, Allison Dozier Interiors. Wet rooms are by far getting more popular in the United States! In 2012, they became all the rage in Europe, making a single-use space to include a shower, toilet and sink. Thus, there was no need for a shower door, so they could spray it all clean at one time. In the United States, our wet rooms are a little more about fashion than function, so the cabinetry will not typically not be included in this room. Ours have a bathtub, shower and sometimes toilet included in the “wet room.” Homeowners seem to love them! We are currently designing our fourth one this year. This is something more and more homeowners will be trying to achieve if the space allows. Anne Marie Boedges, Anne Marie Design Studio. I think that wet rooms are here to stay! Ultimately, they provide a better use of space and create a feeling of openness, which is especially important when space is limited. The convenience of cleaning a wet room is also a big bonus since it’s one large space that surfaces can be openly sprayed and wiped down. Another great factor is that they are a more sophisticated way to provide barrier-free accessibility as people are wanting to stay in their current homes as they age. They can be more expensive than a traditional bathroom, but ultimately, they add value to your home. When done correctly, wet rooms can be a spa-worthy, functional upgrade to any home! Leah Jarrell, LJ Interior Designs.
BOTH
Installing a wet room is not for the faint of heart! The concept sounds wonderful, a space without clutter or mess, easy accessibility and practical for all. However, it doesn't offer the same creative freedom a bathroom offers. Not to mention that water covering parts of the wet room is inevitable. They can also be expensive because everything needs to be tiled and waterproofed. I see the wet room becoming a classic for hotels, but I think most homeowners aren't ready to jump on this concept without being able to have the best of both worlds! Gigi Lombrano, Gigi Lombrano Interiors.

CRAZE
Although I admire the space saving advantages of a wet room design, I personally feel it is a craze, only because all I can think of is the long-term clean-ability. I already loathe cleaning a standard bathroom, especially the wetness and humidity left over from a hot shower. The overall feeling, while beautiful to look at, gives me the same feeling as an indoor pool or locker room would: wet and grimy! I would only specify this design for a hotel room or lightly used space with excellent ventilation capabilities. I could not imagine dealing with this for everyday showering and use. Chelsea Smith, Chelsea Design Company. Bathrooms tend to get bigger and better every year: more high-tech, more luxurious and upgraded fixtures and features. The wet room trend is no exception. Wet rooms tend to be very costly due to the amount of tile and water proofing materials that are needed to construct the space. Wet rooms require a sloping floor with the proper drainage and the professional expertise needed to construct the wet room. I must also mention the safety factor of being in an enclosed tiled area where soaps and suds could make for a slippery floor especially when a tub and shower are in the same enclosed area. Wet rooms are open bathroom spaces where privacy is minimal. I feel like wet rooms are a trend that will not gain momentum due to the added expense of the construction of a wet room, the safety factor of potentially being slippery and unsafe and minimal bathroom privacy. Barbara Collins, Barbara Collins Interior Design.
