This booklet provides insight into the early practices of Lent—from examples provided by Our Lord to its inclusion as a requirement for early Christians by the Apostles to the weaker version (compared to early observances) that we practice today. We read about fasting and abstinence from various foods and the variations that occurred over the centuries. It is fascinating to hear of times when the Church eased Lenten requirements, why they were eased, who might have disagreed with the easing of requirements, and why they disagreed. The author compares the dedication shown for Lent by early Christians to the lack of not only fervor but also interest shown by Christians today. The history provided in this booklet offers additional motivation for us to set higher standards for our personal and community observances of Lent.
