This e-booklet provides insight into a little known saint whose story was not documented until hundreds of years after he died. Saint Raymund Nonnatus was delivered by caesarian section after his mother died during childbirth. His name, “Nonnatus” translates to “not born.” From the time of his childhood, he showed an inherent compassion for the suffering of others. He entered the order of Our Lady of Mercy for the redemption of captives. Eventually, he was made “ransomer,” a role that saw him travel into Barbary to buy freedom for many hostages. When he ran out of money, he offered himself in trade for release of other hostages. His love and devotion for others helped him convert many people, which caused him much suffering at the hands of the Algerian governor.
