SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT AND HAMPSHIRE ATTRACTIONS HEAD TO THE CHANNEL ISLANDS SOUTHAMPTON Airport led a brand new initiative to the Channel Islands, to promote tourism in Hampshire and to position the airport as a gateway to London using the excellent rail links available. Visiting both Jersey and Guernsey, the successful event even had a special appearance from Peppa Pig, of Peppa Pig World. Paultons Park (home of Peppa Pig World), Beaulieu, SeaCity Museum, Southampton Art Gallery, Tudor House & Gardens, The Ageas Bowl, South West Trains and Business South all joined the team from Southampton Airport to promote tourism and business opportunities in the region. Blue Islands, Flybe, Jersey Airport and Guernsey Airport were also part of the roadshow, promoting the increasing number of flights available into Southampton from the Channel Islands. 4 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2014

With a journey time of just 40 minutes, accessibility to the region from the islands is quick and easy. Dave Lees, Managing Director of Southampton Airport said “With more flight seats available between Jersey and Guernsey and Southampton Airport in 2014, it was the ideal time to highlight the great opportunities that this region has to offer visitors from the Channel Islands and the excellent transport links to London. This market continues to expand for us – in 2013 we saw a 6% growth on the previous year, with 323,134 passengers travelling between Southampton Airport and the Channel Islands.” Find out more about the link between the Channel Islands and London at www.southamptonairport.com/ London-Link

SHE SAID “YES”

SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT VOTED TOP UK AIRPORT SOUTHAMPTON Airport has been awarded the title of ‘Top UK Airport’ in the 2014 Wanderlust Readers’ Travel Awards. Southampton Airport topped the chart of UK airports with an impressive satisfaction rating of 87.5%. Final positions were based on an average score for the entry, converted to a percentage – meaning that the award was based on all-important satisfaction levels rather than the number of votes. Phoebe Smith, Wanderlust’s Editor

said: “With the discerning UK traveller increasingly preferring a more bijou airport experience, it’s no wonder that Wanderlust readers have voted Southampton as the Top UK Airport. With its good public transport links, great facilities and flights to 33 destinations from Aberdeen to Verona, it’s a worthy winner.” More information about the awards can be found at: www.wanderlusttravelawards.co.uk

SOUTHAMPTON Airport’s passengers were witness to a very special occasion on Valentines weekend when Manuel Bluel proposed to his girlfriend Francine Kingma using the information screens and an announcement over the tannoy. Manuel travels frequently through Southampton Airport and in December 2010 his flight to Frankfurt was cancelled due to snow. He was talking to a girl who was waiting at the gate for the same flight – Francine. They then queued together at the check-in desk to get new tickets for the next day. Francine lives in Bournemouth and wasn’t sure if her train would make it in time the next day, so Manuel offered for her to use his spare room in Fawley. Flights over the next few days were disrupted again, so several days later they flew to Hannover together and drove to Frankfurt by car. That was the start of their relationship so Manuel wanted to propose at Southampton Airport – where it all started! Of course, Francine said “yes”.

MORE FLIGHTS TO CLERMONTFERRAND

CAROL VORDERMAN VISITS SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT TV personality Carol Vorderman made a flying visit to Southampton Airport in her Diamond DA40 as part of her campaign to fly around the world in 2015. The former Countdown presenter and ‘Loose Woman’ started training to become a pilot last year and plans to be the ninth woman in history to fly solo around the world. She visited Southampton to meet GPS firm, Garmin, to discuss plane navigation systems.

In June 1937, one of Carol’s heroes, Amelia Earhart began her attempt to be the first person ever to fly around the world. Sadly a

month later she was reported missing after a failed attempt to find and land on Howland Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Carol Vorderman is planning to fly Amelia Earhart’s planned route – a staggering 29,000 miles. Carol said: “We had a really warm welcome from everyone at Southampton Airport when we flew in with our small aircraft. The airport was really handy for our meeting about 10 minutes away by taxi…. a great day out.”

FLYBE has boosted its summer schedule by adding another two flights a week to ClermontFerrand from Southampton Airport, meaning that you now have more choice during the peak summer months. The service will run on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Situated conveniently between Lyon and Limoges, Clermont-Ferrand makes for a perfect two-centre French holiday destination. It is regarded not only as the gateway to the Massif Central, with its majestic, volcanic mountain chain but also as the gastronomic capital of central France, being home to numerous Michelin-starred restaurants. Comments Paul Simmons, Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer, “The additional flights have been scheduled to satisfy public demand and they give leisure travellers an even greater choice of convenient affordable flights from Southampton and we look forward to welcoming many new passengers on board.” Read more about this stunning destination at www.southamptonairport. com/Clermont-Ferrand

FLYBE’S BRAND NEW PURPLE WORLD THE new Flybe has landed! The airline has unveiled a brand new look in celebration of their reinvigorated product offering. As part of the revamp, Flybe has launched a world-first 60:60 guarantee, promising customers that if a flight arrives more than 60 minutes’ late at its destination due to a delay within Flybe’s control, they will qualify for a £60 voucher towards their next flight as long as they book within 60 days. There is also a newlook website, and their ticket options have been re-named – ‘Just Fly’ replaces ‘Essentials’; ‘Get More’ is the previous ‘New Economy’ and ‘All In’ is the former ‘Plus’ ticket choice. Improved on-board experiences feature the introduction of stylish purple crew uniforms and purple mood lighting, as well as daily on-

board prize winners, a little gift when you arrive at your destination and an on-time musical celebration. Paul Simmons, Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer, says: “As an airline we are dedicated to continuously looking at ways to improve as a business. Our brand refresh is a significant step forward for us as we move to become the UK’s local airline of choice with a focus on time-saving and punctual travel for regional customers. Purple is not just our new brand colour – it reflects our passion for delivering on our commitment to being the Fastest Way from A to Flybe.” For more information about our airlines visit www.southamptonairport.com/airlines.

Lyn Cole, Airport Ambassador I really enjoy the role as it is very varied and no two days are ever the same – it allows me to use my people and communication skills and my passion for helping people. I am always surprised by the diversity of passengers and enjoy meeting such interesting characters…. Every passenger has their own story to tell and it’s good to see people begin to relax as you chat to them when sometimes they arrive flustered or just unsure of the procedures. We are lucky that Southampton Airport is small enough for us to offer this service to our passengers and help them with the ‘Breeze Through’ experience. They often comment on how friendly the staff at the airport are and it’s good to be part of an integrated team, both airport staff and business partners who really care about the passengers. The small, friendly environment really helps them to be comfortable and feel at ease.

MAGNIFICENT MALAGA

Rebecca Pearson finds out that there is so much more to the well-known Spanish resort than just sun and sea

Above: View of the Alhambra. Hill. Right: A Barbary macaque which live on the Rock of Gilbraltar

I

T’S the holiday destination that will give Brits some guaranteed sunshine. Every year Malaga soaks up an average of 1,901 hours of sunshine and on average, rain only falls on 70 days a year. It has one of the warmest winters in Europe and the summer season lasts eight months, from April to November. But there is so much more to the southern Spanish province than sun, sea and beaches. Nestled in front of mountains and less than a three-hour trip from Southampton Airport, the capital of the province, also called Málaga, is the fifth most populated city in Spain with more than 560,000 inhabitants. And it is not just people that are drawn

14 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2014

to the city. It is also a stopping point for hundreds of migratory species and the Natural Park Montes de Málaga is home to more than 230 plant species and more than 160 types of vertebrates. At about 2,800-years-old, it is one of the oldest cities in the world and has been nominated as a candidate for the 2016 European Capital of Culture. The historic centre of the city includes archaeological remains and monuments from the Phoenician, Roman, Arabic and Christian eras. History enthusiasts are drawn to the 11th century Arabic fortress Palace of Alcazaba adjacent to the ruins of a Roman theatre dating to the 1st century BC. The city also boasts the 14th century,

which housed troops to protect the Alcazaba, giving visitors spectacular views across the city. Tourists are also drawn to see the birthplaces of Pablo Picasso, Hebrew poet and Jewish philosopher Solomon Ibn Gabirol and actor Antonio Banderas, who were all born in Málaga. But for some downtime, there are 16 beaches including lively urban beaches of La Malagueta, Pedregalejo or San Andrés to bays including Baños del Carmen or Peñón del Cuervo. For those who want to go further afield, Gibraltar is just an hour and a half’s drive away. The British overseas territory boasts a network of Second World War tunnels

DESTINATION MALAGA

excavated between 1939 and 1944 by the Royal Engineers and Canadian Engineers which were opened to the public in 2005. The country is home to the Barbary macaques which have lived on the Rock of Gibraltar for centuries and tourists who take a boat out to sea will also get to see flying fish and dolphins. But for travellers who would rather see the city from above, cable cars run from the Alameda Gardens to the top of the Rock. Another destination just a short drive from Málaga airport is Grenada, home to The Alhambra, the most visited monument of Spain. The UNESCO World Heritage Site was built as a small fortress in 899 but was renovated in the mid 11th century by the Moorish king Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar of the Kingdom of Granada and then converted 16 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2014

into a royal palace in 1333 by Yusuf I Sultan of Granada. And on the outskirts of Grenada is the 16th century Monasterio de San Jerónimo, with stained glass windows and where the nuns still sing vespers. Visitors can also see the tomb of Gonzalo de Córdoba, known as El Gran Capitán and the Catholic Monarchs’ military man who was put to rest in the building and buy almond cookies baked by the nuns. And south of Grenada is Motril, a coastal village featuring Arab-Spanish design, the baroque style city hall and the sanctuary of the Virgin of Cabeza, the patron saint of the village, erected over the former residence of the mother of King Boabdil. It also has an important fishing port and beaches including La Joya, Poniente and Carchuna.

DESTINATION MALAGA

Holidaymakers may want to plan their trip around Málaga’s key events to soak up even more of the culture. The city’s nine-day summer festival Feria de Málaga starts with a 30 minute light and firework display to classical music on August 9 to celebrate the merging of Malaga to the Castilian Crown. On July 16, boats are decorated

and there is a fireworks display to celebrate Virgen del Carmen, the patron of the sea and protector of seamen and the Eve of San Juan celebrations for the longest day of the year with firework displays and live music on the beaches take place on June 23. With so much to do in southern Spain, it’s no wonder sun seekers are flocking to Málaga.

DESTINATION ALICANTE

Discover the unexpected in southern Spain

SUMMER 2014 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT 21

DESTINATION ALICANTE

I

T is a richly vibrant city nestled on miles of gloriously golden sandy beaches. Alicante is one of the jewels of the crown of Spain’s Costa del Sol. The Valencian city’s native Alicantinos are renowned for being some of the friendliest in the area. And with the Valencian city’s basking hot summers and mild winters – who can blame them? Less than three hours from Southampton Airport it is a breeze for travellers to reach and immerse themselves in its summer charms. Whether you want to sip on a cerveza, stroll its narrow streets or dip into the cool blue waters it’s the chance to enjoy the finer things in life. You can take a midnight stroll on its world famous beaches or watch the world go by tucking into tasty plates of tapas. With a rich history dating back to the Romans, Greeks and Moors, it rose to become Valencia’s capital city and thriving as a maritime city in the 19th century. Its picturesque marina sits at its heart with a wide range of leisure and nautical activities. Enjoy boat tours and watersports activities or indulge in the gastronomic delights of its stylish seafood restaurants and cafes. Surrounding the marina is the grand La Explanada de Espana, an elegant boulevard of red, black and cream tiles. Built by municipal architect José Guardiola Picó in 1867, it caters for the romantic Spanish custom of the paseo – evening stroll. In summer it is bustling with pavement cafes and handicraft stalls and forms the centre for the city’s vibrant fiestas. There are also a range of free summer concerts in its impressive music pavilion. One of the highlights of the year is the Fiesta of San Juan where spectacular fireworks light up the beach with crowds gathering at the Paseo de Gomiz for five consecutive nights. Capture stunning views of the city at the Santa Barbara Castle sitting above the outcrop of the Benacantil Mountain. It is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe and was built by the Moors in the 10th century AD extended in the following centuries. There are castle evening concerts held on weekends during July in the courtyard. Meanwhile the 300 year-old former Moorish mosque the Iglesia de Santa Maria is steeped in history. The city’s stunning beaches are easily reachable by foot, bus or tram. The popular Playa del Postiguet is a 900m wide arc of golden sand with a palm shaded promenade. Playa de la Almadraba is a haven for watersports enthusiasts while the Playa de San Juan is hailed as one of the finest in Spain for golfing enthusiasts with its 18-hole golf course. 22 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2014

Those preferring a more rugged coastline can explore the more remote Cabo de las Huertas with its three picturesque coves. For culture vultures Plaza del Puerto Viejo stages a view from the raised promenade of the international festival in July and August with recitals of classical music, ballet and jazz and theatre performances. Also worth a gander is the Paseo de Gadea art market held every evening hosting displays of works by local artists. Those wanting to get away from it all can hire a car or take excursions to the hills. Alicante’s famous Ruta de Vino – wine route is a chance to sip the region’s deep red wine El Seque in its rolling vineyards. The pristine waters and protected habitat of island Tabarca are just 45 minutes away from the city while animal lovers can get back to nature exploring the Andalucian countryside by horseback. Quirky trips include the quaint tea house Carmen del Camillo with Morrocan tea and sweets in a pretty garden just outside the city.

Further afield one of the region’s most impressive churches is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Magdalena located 25km inland in the city of Novelda. Worth the hike is a 63km trip north-east to the dam and reservoir of Guadelest which supplies water to many towns in the area. Meanwhile bustling Benidorm is less than 50km away with Aqualandia water park boasting the highest waterchute in Europe. Overall it is a lively and picturesque region with plenty to keep you coming back.

SIR BEN OPENS NEW CONTAINER BERTH SIR Ben Ainslie, Britain’s greatest ever Olympic sailor, ordered the loading of a giant golden container on to one of the world’s biggest ships to open Southampton’s brand new £100m berth. Themed on the gold standard, the event highlighted DP World Southampton’s status as the UK’s number one performing container terminal, turning vessels around faster than any other British port. The inauguration of the berth brought to an end one of the biggest engineering projects in the south; building a new 500 metre quay designed to handle the largest and deepest container vessels afloat and on order. Sir Ben said: “As someone who lives here in Hampshire, I know how the port of Southampton is at the centre of the region’s life and economy. “So I am proud to be part of something that has such a big role to play in its future.” After giving the order for one of the terminal’s straddle carriers to pick up the special golden container from the dockside, the four times Olympic gold medallist watched as it was then transferred on board the deck of the container vessel, CMA CGM Marco Polo. DP World Southampton’s managing director, Chris Lewis said: “The opening is a momentous day in the history of the port, with the 500 metre long new quay, the first for nearly 20 years, designed to ensure the port can continue to handle the very biggest container ships long into the future.”

REASONSTO GO TO...

VERONA

While Verona may be a lesser known city in the region, there are plenty of things to do and places to visit. words by Ed Stilliard

I

t is the city where star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet met their ill-fated end and where celebrated Renaissance artist Veronese was born. Set in the Veneto region in Northern Italy Verona is a welcome retreat from the tourist-clogged streets of Venice not far from the idyllic lake. But don’t go there expecting a weekend in a rural backwater, while Verona may be dwarfed by its neighbour, there is more than enough to fill a week. Standing head and shoulders over the city is the Roman Arena – the third largest in Italy after the coliseum in Rome and the amphitheatre in Capua – where opera buffs can catch world-class performances. Located in the city’s main square, Piazza Bra, the elliptical shape enhances the acoustic quality of the performances allowing 30,000 fans to rejoice in the majesty of Italian opera. Some of the highlights from this year’s calendar include Placido Domingo singing Giuseppe Verdi’s back catalogue of arias, Bizet’s Carmen, Verdi’s Aida, and of course, Charles Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet. They may have been completely fictional but Shakespeare fans can take heart in the fact that the Italians have adopted the world’s

28 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2014

most romantic couple as their own and built shrines to them. Romantics flock to Juliet’s House in Via Cappello to stand under the stone balcony of this 14th century house. Visitors can go inside and stand on the balcony to call out for their Romeo. Die-hard fans of Shakespeare, can also seek out the Tomba di Guilietta, a cloister in Via del Pontiere, which the Veronese will try to convince you is Juliet’s final resting place. But there is fact as well as fiction to Verona. Standing in the Piazza dei Signori stands Verona’s early-Renaissance Loggia del Consiglio , the 15thcentury city council (not open to visitors) and through the archway at the far end of the piazza are the open-air Arche Scaligere – elaborate Gothic tombs of the Scaligeri family where murderers are interred next to the relatives they killed. For food or simply just to sit and watch the world go by head to Piazza delle Erbe, formerly a Roman forum, which is ringed with buzzing cafes and some of Verona’s most beautiful buildings. Separating Piazza delle Erbe from Piazza dei Signori is a monumental gate known as Arco della Costa, hung with a whale’s rib that, according to legend, will fall on the first just person to walk beneath it,

Above: View across the city. Below: Verona Amphitheatre

although plenty of popes and kings have ventured forth underneath it. Dividing the two piazzas, is the striped Torre dei Lamberti which rises a neck-craning 85m offering panoramic views of the city and

nearby mountains, and was completed in 1463 – too late to notice invading Venetians. Oozing with Italian charm and grace, Verona is the perfect hideaway for the cultured tourist.

MAJORCA

DESTINATION MAJORCA

Castle Castillo de Bellver in Majorca at Palma

Well-known for its nightlife and beaches but there is a lot more than meets the eye on this Spanish island. Rebecca Pearson reports

SUMMER 2014 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT 31

I

T’S a party island best known for its nightlife and sandy beaches. Surrounded by the sun-soaked Mediterranean Sea, Majorca is the largest of the four Balearic Islands which attract more than 10 million visitors a year. Like its sister islands, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, many of the tourists come for the lively nightlife throughout the summertime. But it is also a great destination to go hiking, play golf or indulge in some culture while visiting its mountains, coves and beaches. As the plane swoops towards the capital city of Palma de Majorca the first thing that will catch passengers’ eyes is the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma which dominates the skyline. The impressive gold limestone building dates back to 1229 when King James I of Aragon started its construction on the former site of an Arab mosque, but the cathedral of La Seu wasn’t finished until 1601. The Gothic-inspired structure also has the largest stained glass windows in the world and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. History lovers will also enjoy Bellver Castle built in Palma in 1309 by King Jaume II, King of Majorca. The castle, which sits on top of a hill surrounded by a forest, became a military prison in the 18th century and it was temporarily turned into a mint in the 19th century. The Sóller railway is great for those who want to venture out of the capital. A daily train to the village has been running since 1912 and a tram, which has been running since 1913, will take visitors from the village to the Port of Sóller. The route passes through beautiful orange and lemon groves, tiny villages and across the Sierra de Alfàbia mountain range at which top altitudes reach 1,067 metres. Sóller is home to 12,000 people and the bay attracts birds such as little egrets, Muscovy and mallard ducks, greylag geese and huge flocks of gulls. Although visitors will still see a number of hotels there it is a little off the beaten track and shops, bars and restaurants tend to be quieter than those in the island’s main tourist areas like Magaluf. Magaluf is to the south of Sóller and just 15 miles of Palma’s airport. Every year its white sandy beach, bars and clubs attract thousands of holiday goers from Britain, Russia and Scandinavia, who mostly visit in July and August. It has an array of tourist attractions including the Western Water Park, the Pirate’s Adventure dinner show and go-karting and water sports such as underwater diving, jet skiing and wind surfing.

32 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2014

The daring may also want to try the swimming challenge to Black Lizard Island – the Isla de sa Porrassa, where thousands of lizards scurry across the beaches. On June 23 fireworks will light up the sky and huge bonfires will be lit in Palma’s Parc de la Mar for the Nic de Foc festival marking the start of the island’s summer fiestas. Majorca is also a great place to play golf – contrary to popular belief golf is not a rich man’s game. Almost anyone can take up the sport with the smallest of investment. But no one is denying it can get very expensive – especially when playing golf abroad. The cost of flights, the hotel, meals and then green fees, let alone hiring clubs or paying for their transportation from home, can all add up. Which is why the all-golf-inclusive Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel is an event

DESTINATION FARO, PORTUGAL

about to burst onto the Hampshire sports scene. Why Hampshire? With the hotel situated just 15 minutes by taxi from Palma Mallorca Airport, with 63-holes of inclusive unlimited golf on offer, and flights available from Southampton – players from here can be in their hotel and on to the course within three hours of take-off. Include the fact the all-inclusive-golf tag offers unlimited games on three courses just minutes from the lobby, free club hire and a free shuttle between the courses, as well as breakfast as part of the room deal, then it’s easy to see why the re-furbished Sheraton Arabella was full to capacity within weeks of its reopening last autumn. The fact the hotel comes equipped with a superb spa, both indoor and outdoor pools, fine dining restaurants and in-season kids clubs, there’s certainly a sense that this is a golf destination that can appeal to the whole family. The hotel is located next to the 18 holes Arabella golf course Son Vida (par 71) which adjoins the property and is an easy stroll from the sun loungers and pool deck. It is ideal for an early morning game, or late afternoon sun-

downer where the chance for a return to dip in the pool after the eighteenth hole is completed is so tempting. Guests can also use the 18 hole Son Muntaner (par 72) and Son Quint (par 72) courses as well as the 9 hole Son Quint Pitch and Putt (par 3), both venues just two minutes from the hotel by shuttle. Both the Son Muntaner and Son Quint courses have superb club houses and restaurant facilities. Golf lessons as well as driving range facilities and youth golf activities are available at the courses for an additional charge.
