SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT UNVEILS THE WORLD’S BIGGEST MO Southampton Airport showed its support for Movember last autumn, by unveiling the World’s Biggest Mo on the ground. The painted moustache measured a massive 250m by 60m and was located on airport land, running parallel to the runway. Inspired by the efforts of gents across the world who cultivate moustaches annually, the airport decided to create the giant moustache in its grounds to raise awareness of the charity. Movember raises money to change the face of men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health. The Massive Mo was the length of five Olympic swimming pools (or seven and a half Dash 8 Q400s, a common aircraft that
can be seen at Southampton Airport). The outline of the Mo is approximately 650 linear meters; which equates to the length of around 6 and a half football pitches. The Massive Mo would not have been possible without the help of the organisations that volunteered their time and materials, namely Pitchmark Ltd, Dyer & Butler, PH Warr, and UAViate. Louise Neville, Southampton Airport’s PR & Communications Executive, said: “Men working at Southampton Airport have been supporting Movember for four years now, raising thousands of pounds for this worthwhile charity. They’ve dyed them crazy colours and had ‘best mo’ competitions – much to the
delight of our passengers. This year we wanted to use our space and captive, airborne audience to really get behind Movember and do something special for the fantastic supporters who
work here and travel through the airport.” For more information visit www.southamptonairport.com/ massivemo
BITTERNE PARK SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP Southampton Airport and Bitterne Park School celebrated the 10th anniversary of a unique partnership at the end of last year. Over the last ten years the airport has provided grants, guest speakers, airport tours and work experience opportunities for high-flyers at Bitterne Park School. Pupils have put on performances at the airport to entertain passengers and the organisations jointly created The Destinations Lounge at the school - a learning and careers advice centre for students and the local community, incorporating the latest learning resources and technologies. At the anniversary event, Bitterne Park School unveiled a ten-year timeline charting the partnership and the airport presented the school with a brand new trophy to award outstanding achievement in travel and tourism students. Teams from both organisations were also treated to a fantastic performance from the school’s music students – including a rendition of ‘Fly Me To The Moon’.

RAISING FUNDS FOR VISION FOR ETHIOPIA
NEW CONNECTIONS TO NORTH AMERICA
Flybe has signed a new codeshare agreement with Dublin-based airline Aer Lingus for flights from Southampton Airport. This enables Southampton passengers to access, via a single stop in Dublin, an even wider range of destinations across North America including Boston, New York, San Francisco, Orlando, Chicago and Toronto. Customers just need to book their flight via the Aer Lingus website or through local travel agents and, with just one airline ticket, they can enjoy seamless onward flights through Dublin. The added benefit is that Dublin Airport also provides US Customs pre-clearance meaning that passengers arrive in the United States
as a ‘domestic passenger’ and can proceed straight through to arrivals at their destination, by-passing lengthy US Customs and Immigration queues. Jan Halliday, Director of Marketing and Communications at Southampton Airport, said: “This new partnership opens up even more world-wide connections for our passengers, with great value flights via Dublin. By pre-clearing customs in Ireland, customers can save time and avoid stress in the US – fitting perfectly with the relaxed passenger experience at Southampton Airport when they set out.” For more information on worldwide connections visit www.southamptonairport.com/aer-lingus
Southampton Airport has thrown its support behind the international sight-saving charity Orbis and their Vision for Ethiopia appeal. The airport has been supporting Orbis and their Flying Eye Hospital – a unique teaching facility complete with operating and lecture theatre, which trains eye care teams in the developing world – through a coin collection, that in just one year has raised a fantastic £2,404. Allan Thompson, Orbis EMEA Director of External Relations says: “Because of debilitating eye problems like blinding trachoma, many children in Ethiopia find it hard to attend school. Orbis identifies and trains people in local communities, including teachers, to look out for the signs of eye disease. With Southampton Airport and the UK public’s support, we can continue to make a difference in this country and ensure that children receive an education by providing access to antibiotics, glasses and surgery. By supporting our appeal you are not only saving a child’s sight, you’re also giving them their future back.” With 75 million people (approximately 82% of the population) at risk from this highly painful and blinding condition, the UK public’s help is needed to make this easily curable disease a thing of the past by 2020. For more information about Orbis visit www.orbis.org Look out for the collection globe in our Departure Lounge.

NEW CONNECTIONS TO SCANDINAVIA Eastern Airways has signed a new agreement with Wideroe which will provide Southampton Airport travellers with greater Norwegian connections via Aberdeen, along with improved access to the Norwegian airline’s comprehensive network of Scandinavian destinations. This codeshare partnership and ticketing agreement will enable Eastern Airways to offer connections from Southampton to Stavanger and Bergen via Aberdeen. Passengers’ hold baggage will be checked in at Southampton and collected at their end destination. Onward connections in Norway are also available on Wideroe’s network, including those to Haugesund, Kristiansand, Skien, Kristiansund, Molde and Sandefjord. This Italian city has long been known for its sense of style and fashion, but there is more to Milan than meets the eye. Words by Catherine Collins Above: Bars and restaurants along Navigli’s canals
I
T is a bustling and stylish city bursting with the perfect blend of architectural heritage and sophisticated lifestyle, and renowned as one of the fashion capitals of the world. You would be hard pressed not to enjoy the fashionable and modern style of Milan, the thriving cosmopolitan capital of commerce in northern Italy, with its elegant fashion houses and lively nightlife. But, if you spend time strolling through the pretty medieval canals in the neighbourhood of Navigli – lined with bookshops, boutiques and bars, and home to a thriving community of artists and musicians - you’ll

be captivated by a diverse city, filled with the history and heritage of more than 26 centuries, with a plethora of hidden gems. Milan’s climate makes it a year-round destination, from the cold and frosty winter to the balmy and temperate summer. And there’s plenty happening in this metropolis paradise for shopping, football, opera, and nightlife, which still remains the marketplace for Italian fashion, with supermodels and international paparazzi descending upon the city twice a year for its spring and autumn fairs. Quadrilatero d’Oro, literally translated as Quadrilateral of Gold is home to some of the
most famous Italian and international luxury brands, including Armani, Tiffany, Prada, Gucci and Chanel. And although Milan’s designer clothes and furnishings are a major attraction for many fashion-conscious tourists, not all of its pleasures are expensive – sitting outside a café in the city’s central square watching the well-dressed world go by, or indulging in a spot of windowshopping is both enjoyable and affordable. And no matter how many times you see the Duomo, a magnificent gothic cathedral 500 years in the making sublimely, dominating the skyline – it never fails to take your breath away. Climb the 166 steps to the

top and enjoy the tranquil and heavenly view of the spires whilst looking out over the city to the mountains. To the right sits the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Europe’s oldest shopping mall, and Milan’s Royal Palace is on the left. From here it’s a short walk to the Teatro alla Scala Opera House and Giuseppe Verdi road – a street lined with antique shops and stores selling professional products for fine arts. Follow this to the appealing district of Brera, with its narrow streets, cute shops, tasty restaurants and Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan’s main art gallery which houses beautiful paintings of the Lombard and Venetian schools, including Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus and Madonna and Child Blessing by Giovanni Bellini. 16 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SPRING 2015
Having been partly destroyed by Second World War bomb raids, the city has rebuilt itself and although predominantly modern, Milan still provides a network of narrow streets to explore and a visit to the 15th century church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see Leonardo da Vinci’s famous fresco The Last Supper is a must. Book an evening or night-time tour and you’ll be guided through air-locked rooms to the golden glow of the refectory where Christ reveals to gasping disciples that one among them will betray him. The seven chapels located on either side of the church were originally used as burial places for the most important Milanese families, and the Chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Graces existed before the church itself.
DESTINATION MILAN
The city has always been important and the impressive Sforza Castle is home to several museums, taking you on a journey through time and allowing the opportunity to revel in fine works of art, such as Michelangelo’s final, and unfinished, sculpture, Rondanini Pietà. In all, Milan is much more than the work-obsessed city it is often
portrayed as. And whether you choose it as a short city break or a hub for other Northern Italy destinations like the Alps or Lake Corno, this vibrant city has many sites of interest and a good number of grand palaces and fine churches that mix well with Milan’s work-hard, play-hard ethos that emphasises the lifestyle of enjoying worldly pleasures.

each year – exceeding the island’s population nearly ten times over, all attracted by the diverse countryside, mild climate and Corsican cookery. And nowhere in the Mediterranean has beaches finer than the island’s perfect halfmoon bays of white sand and transparent waters, perfect for those who choose to spend their holiday lazing on one of the many beaches and topping up their tan. Set in a protected nature site, Palombaggia Beach is one of the top beaches in Europe - a beautiful stretch of powdery golden sand and shallow crystal clear blue water, which goes on for more than a mile to a backdrop of mountains and pink granite giving colour and character to this wondrous place. Looking out from the shore, the attractive uninhabited small islands of the archipelago of Cerbicale rise from the turquoise water, tempting all who see them to take in their beauty with a sea excursion. Windsurfing, jet-skis, kayaks, pedal boats and a dive centre makes it the ideal place for
energetic adults or children alike. Rocky headlands and sandy beaches scatter through the west coast all the way down to Ajaccio, Napoleon’s birthplace and the island’s capital, where pavement cafés and palm-lined boulevards teem with tourists in summer. But it’s not all sun worship, pavement cafés and beach life – white-knuckle roads whisk explorers, adventurers and hikers to the world-famous GR20, which means great trail n°20 in French. The GR20 offers a tricky trek that requires experience of mountain walking, and a sure-footedness for rocky landscapes and mountain ridges, although not a technically challenging hike – it does require some scrambling and use of a ladder and chains on the Northern section, so is not recommended for beginners. This long distance footpath, which takes walkers the length of the isle if they can conquer the terrain, is arguably one of Europe’s finest and most exhilarating

mountain treks, taking two weeks to complete the classic path. But the shafts of light that beam through the branches of the tall trees are quick to reveal the reason the trail is said to be one of the most beautiful in the world and the abundant splendour of wild strawberry trees, myrtle, heather and rosemary can be seen up to 600m altitude. Above this, the peppery scent of the pine forests, which reign on the sunny slopes, rise into the crisp mountain air. Although closer to Italy, Corsica has officially been a part of France for more than 200 years – apart from a brief period during WWII when it came under Italian and German occupation - and the island’s rich history reveals that under Genoese rule a massive defence system was constructed, including citadels and coastal watchtowers, to prevent seaborne raids. Many of these still dot the coastline and are a must for visitors to the isle.In the fortress town of Bonifacio, lays the 12th century citadel that is perched upon the spectacular
white cliffs in the southernmost tip of Corsica. Built by the Genoese occupiers, the towering comb of ancient buildings are only rivalled by the 13th century Citadel of Corte, thanks to the steep rock it’s built on and known locally as Eagle’s Nest. It sits atop a narrow rocky promontory that towers over the Restonica and Tavignanu rivers as they converge at the foot of the town. Corsica is also a good destination for golf, and has the Golf de Spérone overlooking the Mediterranean, which is regarded as one of Europe’s best courses and is regularly ranked in the top 100 courses. So whether you choose to visit the chic seaside town of Calvi, where Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson lost his right eye in battle, or discover the mountains and glaciallakes of Creno, Meno or Nino – Corsica’s spectacularly changing nature will ensure you do not leave disappointed.

he Union Jack will be flying high when the world’s newest cruise ship, the 142,000 ton Britannia, begins its 2015 season in Southampton. Emblazoned around the ship’s enormous bow will be a bold, stylised version of the nation’s flag signalling the start of a new era for Southampton based P&O Cruises. The presence of Britannia in the port throughout her maiden programme of voyages will mean a hectic time for Southampton Airport as thousands of passengers fly in to join the biggest cruise ship ever specifically constructed for the rapidly growing British market. With enough cabins to accommodate up to 3,647 guests, Britannia will bring a whole new style of family friendly cruising into service after being officially named in a spectacular dockside ceremony on Tuesday, March 9. These days a growing number of cruise passengers are opting for the convenience

of using Southampton Airport, dramatically cutting travelling time, rather than driving or taking a coach or train to and from the city’s docks. Cruising offers the indulgence of the high life on the high seas with people seeking out the most direct and hassle free beginning and end to their holiday with Southampton Airport proving to be plain sailing. With another Fab-u-lous series of Strictly Come Dancing now at an end, P&O Cruises has also announced the line-up for its hugely popular Strictly themed cruises in 2015, which includes this year’s professional finalists Karen Hauer, Kevin Clifton and Kristina Rihanoff as well as series winner Pasha Kovalev. This year, P&O Cruises has four dedicated Strictly Come Dancing themed voyages, in partnership with BBC Worldwide Ltd. Each cruise will feature four of the show’s favourite professional dancers with the opportunity to meet them and maybe learn a
move or two from the experts themselves during the regular dance classes. Also joining each cruise will be a guest judge, and a special celebrity to offer a Strictly experience to remember. The Strictly stars will offer up close and personal interviews on board, photo and meet and greet opportunities, and spectacular Strictly Come Dancing showcase performances produced by BBC Worldwide. “We will also be joined again on all cruises by a team from DanceSport International, official designers and suppliers of dresses and costumes to the show: a stunning selection of these costumes will be on display around the ship, and available to buy, with organised fashion events to showcase them at their very best,” said a spokesman for P&O Cruises. Passengers can also participate in a dance competition culminating in grand finale performances in the ship’s main theatre, with a judging panel including the Strictly celebrity and guest judge.

NEW YORK
Fancy going Stateside in 2015? Now you can start your journey from Southampton Airport
words by Catherine Collins
P
LANNING a trip to New York can be a daunting prospect, with so much to see and so little time, it’s hard to know where to start. From the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum – the choice of must see attractions is endless and as Frank Sinatra once sang, ‘It’s up to you’. In a city full of iconic landmarks, the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbour is perhaps the most famous of them all, and no trip to the Big Apple would be complete without a visit. Originally a gift of international friendship from the people of France, the Statue has become a symbol of the ideology of opportunity and freedom to many. Take the ferry to Liberty Island and climb the 354 steps to the crown, which is once again open to the public but reservations are needed a few months in advance, and appreciate the stunning views over Manhattan. The Empire State Building and the Top of the Rock also offer jawdropping sights of the city for those who have a head for heights. If you would rather stay a bit closer to the ground, then the Full Island Cruise, which circumnavigates Manhattan Island, will enable you to see more than 101 city sights and a magnificent close up of the 28 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SPRING 2015
Statue of Liberty, in a little under three hours. The 9/11 Memorial, which honours the lives of those who were lost, serves as a tribute to the past as well as a place of hope for the future. The names of every person who died in the attacks on September 11 are inscribed around the twin memorial pools. Beside them stands the state-of-the-art Memorial Museum, a striking and sombre space documenting the events, and consequences, of that fateful day. Understated, poignant and emotionally moving, it’s an absolute must for all visitors to the city. Whether you choose to stroll through Central Park, skate, cycle or take a horse and carriage, this beautiful and well-maintained park has something for everyone. Spacious green fields provide the perfect picnic place to sit and people watch, or you can rent a boat on the lake or take a trip to the zoo – it’s the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. But you haven’t really seen New York until you’ve seen it after dark. When the sun sinks slowly beyond the Hudson River and luminous skyscrapers light up the night sky in a rainbow glow, New York transforms into the ‘city that never sleeps’ and offers unrivalled views. The cruises become more romantic

under the starry sky and the lights of the city appear to shine more than ever. Pressed for time? Hop aboard a double-decker bus for a whirlwind two-hour evening tour of the highlights of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The excursion starts in Times Square, where the lights don’t shine any brighter, before passing the signature shining spires of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. In Brooklyn – you’ll cross the Manhattan Bridge for incredible photo opportunities of the skyline. You can reach a wide range of destinations from Southampton, including New York, with Flybe and Aer Lingus – with just a single stop in Dublin. You will also benefit from US Customs pre-clearance, meaning less time spent in the lengthy queues on arrival in the United States! See our news story on page 5.

OR many the first word that pops into people’s heads when they hear Manchester is “united”, for some it’s “city”. Everyone else thinks of northern grit matched with urban cool and industrious pride. Visitors to the city may flock to Old Trafford for a football match or a spot of cricket, but there’s so much more than just sport. Regarded by some as the UK’s second city it has seen major investment over the past few years while still retaining a sense of pride over its past. At one point the city was the centre of an industrialised Britain and although most of the textile industry has gone, it still can proudly boast to be one of the greatest cities in Europe. SHOPPING Shoppers will be spoilt for choice with all that the city has to offer, indeed it can be a day out which all the family can enjoy. More than 200 shops make up the Intu Trafford Centre which is labelled as just as much a theme park as it is a shopping centre. True fashionistas can find prestigious brands in King Street which offers many designer shops including Tommy Hilfiger, Vivienne Westwood and Armani. For those looking for pure luxury head to Exchange Square in the centre of the city where luxury department stores Harvey Nichols and Selfridges are among some of the stores offering all that money can buy. DAYS OUT From the first steam-powered mill and microcomputer to the pioneering work conducted in our universities today, innovation is the city’s lifeblood. Those keen to explore the world of science should make their way to the Museum of Science and Industry - a must-see attraction with interactive exhibitions showing how the city came the beginning of the modern world. Families can have oodles of fun with the SEA LIFE aquarium and fathers parents can relive their childhoods at the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre. Explore the world at Manchester Museum with four floors of displays and exhibitions in 15 galleries, featuring collections from all over the world including a fossilised Tyrannosaurus Rex named Stan. Salford has seen major regeneration in the past decade and is the new home of the BBC as well as the magnificent Lowry centre and the Imperial War Museum North. Fans of BBC show Welcome To Our Zoo can see the real-life inspiration behind the TV drama at Chester Zoo where animals will enthral and amaze everyone. ART and CULTURE Art lovers can revel in Manchester Art Gallery – a gem in the country’s collection – which houses many earth-shattering and staggering works of art.

Those who love the art of the PreRaphaelites and other 19th century British art, and even those who don’t, will be left picking their jaws up off the floor at the Mosley Street gallery. For those wanting to hear some of the greatest music in the world the state-of-theart 2,400 seat Bridgewater Hall is the perfect venue. It is the home of Manchester’s renowned Hallé Orchestra as well as being the performance base for the city’s other distinguished ensembles, the BBC Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata. FOOD and DRINK Foodies can taste the world in Manchester and some of the country’s greatest chefs are cooking gastronomic delights in the heart of the north. Start your evening with a relaxing drink

in the refined setting of Cloud 23 with panoramic views across the city. Michelin-starred chef Aiden Byrne is the youngest British chef ever to win a Michelin star and he demonstrates his culinary skills in the gallery kitchen at Manchester House. You can dine like Posh and Becks - literally - when you head to The French, where the couple allegedly had their first date. Oh, and Royalty and Presidents have also tasted award-winning chef Simon Rogan’s culinary offerings too. For those wanting to carry on the evening head to Under New Management in Salford which has been voted as one of the top 10 secret bars in the world. Or for something a little closer to the hotel head to the Milton Club located in the opulent Milton Hall. Only found if you know it’s there, the bar is stylish, lavish, and well stocked with premium spirits and wines. (does this refer to staying in a particular hotel???) MUSIC and NIGHTLIFE Anyone who grew up in the 1990s will
remember the heydays of the Hacienda nightclub and the huge imprint that bands such as the Stone Roses and Oasis left not only on the city, but across the world. They may have moved on but the city has still retained its sense of cool. At the heart of the Manchester live music scene since 1991, Night and Day Café has become a true institution. You can catch the latest cutting-edge sounds from around the world. Situated on Oldham Street in the heart of the Northern Quarter, Mint Lounge prides itself on offering something a little more than a traditional clubbing experience. The Star and Garter may not look that appealing from the outside, but on Saturday nights it plays host to Smile, Manchester’s longest-running indie night. It’s certainly not for everyone; don’t expect to hear mainstream chart fare here, but then Manchester hasn’t always been mainstream.
