AIRPORTNEWS BLUE ISLANDS LAUNCHES NEW UPGRADED SERVICE TO GUERNSEY CHANNEL Islands based airline, Blue Islands, have increased their capacity between Southampton and Guernsey by 250% with the introduction of their new 66 seat ATR-72 500. The new aircraft arrived into Southampton Airport for the first time on Friday 6th December and was welcomed with a spectacular water cannon salute. The introduction of the new aircraft means that over 110,000 extra seats per year will be available. The airline looks forward to extending their unique ‘welcome difference’ product to more passengers. Rob Veron, Managing Director of Blue Islands, said “In true Blue Islands fashion, the price quoted is always the price paid, but in addition a very special in flight service will be available on our Southampton service. Hot bacon sandwiches for breakfast and full Champagne bar service for the return flights – complimentary for all passengers, of course. All Blue Islands passengers will also benefit from fast-track security at Southampton Airport.” Dave Lees, Managing Director of Southampton Airport said “This is a really

exciting development for Blue Islands and Southampton Airport. We are looking forward to welcoming more passengers on this route to and from Guernsey and expect many people from the island to take advantage of the special rail tickets available

SKIERS FLY OUT OF SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SOUTHAMPTON Airport’s biggest ever ski season has got underway, as passengers are flying out to the new destinations of Innsbruck, Andorra and Grenoble along with annual ski favourites Chambery, Geneva and Salzburg. Flybe, Europe’s largest independent regional airline, is flying passengers to Grenoble. Grenoble is a dynamic city with plenty of history and culture and its proximity to the Alps offers easy access to some of the region’s most popular ski resorts including the world-famous off-piste ski area, La Grave. AURIGNY VOTED BEST SHORT-HAUL AIRLINE IN WHICH? SURVEY

EASTERN AIRWAYS LAUNCHES NEW SERVICE TO LEEDS BRADFORD EASTERN Airways, the UK’s 2nd largest regional airline, is expanding its route network to include services between Southampton and Leeds Bradford Airport. Leeds is an important route as it links two key commercial centres in a quick and easy way. The route also provides access for people from the north of England to the cruise ships that depart from Southampton to America, Europe, the Baltic and the Caribbean. Southampton Airport moved quickly to safeguard services after recently learning of Flybe’s intention to withdraw from serving this domestic route early next year. The new flights between Southampton and Leeds Bradford start on 20 January 2014, with three services a day between Monday and Friday. In addition, it will also operate a Sunday

afternoon service, providing flexibility for both business and leisure travellers and ensuring the continuation of air links between two of the UK’s major cities. Jan Halliday, Director of Marketing and Communications said: "We are delighted to welcome Eastern Airways back onto this key air link between two important business centres. Southampton is steeped in maritime history with a world class port for cruise liners and has strong business links with Yorkshire and the north of England, particularly in the finance, insurance, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, manufacturing and construction industries” n Flights are now bookable at www.easternairways.com and also via travel agents.

FLYBE ADDS CHANNEL ISLAND FLIGHTS FLYBE has increased flights to both Jersey and Guernsey for summer to five times a day from the end of March. ONE of the oldest and smallest carriers in the world has been judged as the best short-haul airline in an annual readers’ survey carried out by the influential consumer magazine Which? Readers’ scores were based on value, comfort, food & drink, punctuality, luggage allowance and whether they’d recommend to others. GETTING TO SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT IS EASY ACCESS BY ROAD The airport is situated just outside Southampton city centre, on the interchange of the M3 and M27. Passengers should exit at junction 5 of the M27. The airport is also easily reached via the A34 from Oxford and Newbury. The motorways leading to the airport clearly indicate the route to be taken. T would be hard not to fall in love with the Channel Islands – they are the perfect blend of the UK and the continent. If you love foreign travel but don’t want to inconvenienced by the whole different language, different currency, driving on the wrong side of the road thing, they are for you. And even if you do like all those things, it’s still a fantastic place to go and, as it takes around half an hour to fly there from Southampton, very convenient too. You may find yourself beginning to fall in love with Jersey or Guernsey when you spot a huge sandy beach against an azure sea from the window of your plane, falling

deeper still with every cute seaside town, tree-lined avenue, continental-looking harbour and cliff-top view of the Atlantic you discover for yourself. Flying from Southampton, the journey to Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney is so quick that you could easily go for a day trip, but with each island offering so much, it would be a shame not to stay longer, and would be easy to keep yourself entertained for a week, or even longer. Everyone will have their own favourite corner of each of the islands. On Jersey, animal lovers are sure to fall in love with the Durrell Wildlife Park, where you can encounter some of the rarest and most fascinating animals on the planet and

Formula 1 fans may never wish to leave The Mansell Collection, while food lovers may prefer to sit down to a meal at one of the island’s many fantastic restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Ocean Restaurant at the Atlantic Hotel or its sister eatery, Mark Jordan at the Beach. Guernsey is also known for its quality restaurants, and both islands boast the opportunity to enjoy delicious food, including seafood and local produce, at stunning locations. Both islands have a host of beautiful golden beaches. Nature lovers, photographers and anyone in search of a stunning beach will want to hop over to Herm Island

off the coast of Guernsey, a car-free haven. Meanwhile, St Brelade’s Bay Beach on Jersey won the Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice beaches award last year. As well as being rich in good weather, delicious produce, family attractions, and entertainment, the Channel Islands have fascinating histories. You can learn about a difficult period in their history – their occupation during the Second World War – at a number of attractions, including the German Occupation Museum and the German hospital on Guernsey and the Jersey War Tunnels and The Channel Islands Military Museum on Jersey or you may wish to enjoy Alderney’s walking, cycling, fishing and more. Sark is a car-free island, where you can get around in a horse-drawn carriage or on a bike, and enjoy a more leisurely pace of life. Experience the breathtaking view from La Coupée Bridge. Whichever island is your base, you may want to take a trip to one or all of the other Channel Islands. With so much on offer the Channel Islands may be easy to get to, but they’re very hard to leave.

THE Breeze Through award for September went to a crew from the Servisair ramp team - Brent Griffiths, Terry Wright, Lee Faithful, Shirley Cuppleditch, Pete Digwa and Marc Harris - for their perseverance and customer-focused attitude when r. assisting a young paraplegic passenger. The young man arrived at the airport wishing to board his flight with a 112kg wheelchair. The team Servisair ra mp team had not previously been advised of the specialist chair and had to work d be creatively to ensure that the chair could loaded into the aircraft hold. The dimensions were tight, the chair could not be collapsed and spreader boards were required to distribute the weight. After the first attempt there was insufficient space for the spreader boards, requiring the chair be offloaded. The team were committed to finding a solution to enable the chair to be loaded so that the passenger could travel, and after removing the arms from the chair the wheelchair finally fitted, allowing the young man to travel and enjoy his holiday. ITH so much happening in such a short space of time there is no reason not to visit Scotland in 2014. And with Southampton Airport running services to Glasgow,Edinburgh and Aberdeen, it's never been easier to get there. One of the biggest draws is the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, a once in a lifetime opportunity to see some of the world's finest athletes and perhaps even the fastest man on the planet - Usain Bolt. Following a successful programme in 2009, another deluge of events are planned to emphasise Scottish history and culture. Take the magnificent Diaspora tapestry for example, created by Scots in 25 countries across the world. Two hundred embroidered panels will start being put together in March and then tour the country until November. Meanwhile in late February the tenth Glasgow Film Festival rolls in with a host of major premieres and top talent from around the world. The packed programme includes pop-up cinema, glitzy gala screenings and the fearful Frightfest, so there is something for everyone. Also not forgetting the world-famous Edinburgh Festival and Fringe Festival. For those who prefer the quiet life, Scotland boasts beautiful, tranquil landscape perfect for a hike or a picnic. ET in the heart of West Yorkshire and on the banks of the River Aire, Leeds is a city that has stood the test of time. Originally built as a market town in the middle ages the city has grown into a thriving metropolis littered with history, markets and independent shops. One of the city's main selling points is its shopping in its compact city centre. One of the first stops on a shopping spree is the Victoria Quarter's arcades, the Grade II building features stunning Edwardian architecture and is a popular spot. Also worth a visit is the Leeds Corn Exchange. ANY holidaymakers simply pass through Faro and head straight towards the Algarve’s many beaches and golf resorts. But they are missing out. That’s because the Algarve’s capital has so much to tempt travellers off the beach making it a worthy city break destination in its own right. With its medieval cobbled streets and rich culture, this distinctly Portugese city is a cut above other coastal resorts. And boasting more than 300 days of sunshine a year, with direct flights from Southampton to Faro you could unscrew a bottle of suncream just a few hours after buying it in an overcast Southampton city centre. The ancient settlement of Faro is located almost midway along Portugal’s southern coast and boasts great character and delights for everyone to enjoy. For those who love culture, the 9th century old town or Cidade Velha within the thick medieval walls is not to be missed. Enter through the neoclassical Arco da Vila designed by Francisco Xavier Fabri and enjoy the views of the orange-tree lined Largo da Sé with its town hall on the left, Bishop’s Palace on the right and the ancient Sé cathedral completed in 1251. Climb the steps of the bell tower and enjoy spectacular views of the pretty walled town, the wetlands and the sea and look out for storks, which have made this region their home, nesting in chimneys and spires. The cathedral’s gilded altar and wooden, tiled and marbled chapels and tombs also demand a visit. There’s a number of museums including the Faro Municipal Museum, churches, ancient buildings and a Jewish quarter all dotted with beautiful cafes and restaurants along the way to rest weary legs. Shoppers should head to Rua de Santo Antonio for a number of fashion boutiques, ceramic stores and souvenir stands. Enjoy a delicious meal at the marina where freshly caught seafood and local specialities including cataplana (a popular stew) awaits. If all the walking hasn’t worn you out, the student population in the city ensures there is a buzzing nightlife with a good theatre scene. Time your visit for late August and you will witness the annual FolkFaro festival, a lively colourful celebration of folklore with open-air shows, parades and dances by performers from around the world. For nature lovers, take a boat trip in a painted wooden fishing boat around the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve’s 60 kilometres of water channels around the marshland, mud

banks, sand banks and salt pans for a close-tonature experience. This part of Faro, which is twice the size of Guernsey, became a conservation area in 1987 and is now home to 270 species of birds including flamingos. There are bird-watching trips on offer, numerous guided walking tours and specialist trips some of which take in the region’s fishing history including a trip to the markets. If you simply can’t resist the sand and the sea, head to Faro Island, a peninsula that stretches out into the Atlantic Ocean. For a secluded beach experience Cape St Mary known as Deserta Island, the most southerly point of mainland Portugal is well worth a visit. But despite the allure of the beach, it’s certain you will be counting down the hours until you return to the city.

OUTHAMPTON, located along the south coast of England just 75 miles from London, is an important maritime city. It’s one of the largest ports in Europe, welcoming hundreds of cruise ships and cargo vessels each year. The city plays host to over 4 million visitors annually, all flocking to the city for an exciting cultural experience in a diverse, vibrant environment. From museums, hotels and shops to award-winning green spaces and top class restaurants, there is no shortage of things to do. With its excellent transport links (including its own airport) and close proximity to London, Southampton is easily accessible to many nearby areas and is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Hampshire.

Culture Southampton has fascinating museums which chart important times in the city’s history. In the Old Town, visitors can explore Tudor House and Museum, one of the area’s most significant historic buildings. Dating back over 800 years, the house gives an atmospheric insight into the lives of its residents throughout the centuries. The area’s newest interactive museum, SeaCity, is a must-see for Titanic enthusiasts. SeaCity charts the history of the ship’s fateful voyage, which started when she set sail from the city’s docks in 1912. There is also the opportunity to learn more about what effect the tragedy had on the residents of Southampton at the time. Nearby at the Civic Centre, you’ll find the award-winning City Art Gallery which features a permanent collection of over 3,800 works of art which span six centuries.

Shopping and Sleeping The centre of the city is a mecca for shopaholics. The main shopping centre, West Quay, boasts over 90 stores and popular cafés and restaurants such as Wagamama and Nando’s. Shoppers can enjoy the great choice of retail outlets along the High Street and in the nearby Marlands Centre. Southampton also has one of the largest Ikea stores along the south coast. Nightlife and Eating Out Southampton has a rich nightlife and ‘eating out’ culture, with a fantastic selection of bars, nightclubs, pubs and eateries to tantalise the taste buds. The upmarket areas of Oxford Street and Ocean Village offer fine dining cuisine from around the world, with top class cocktails and friendly hospitality. At the other end of the city centre, Bedford Place provides a relaxed environment with nightclubs, pubs and bars to suit a range of interests. The city has a thriving music scene with popular late night venues such as the Joiners, The Hobbit and the Guildhall providing entertainment throughout the year. Theatre goers will not be disappointed with a night at the Mayflower Theatre, home to the best touring West End shows in a beautifully preserved setting.

Out & About Nearby Southampton’s excellent location and great transport links mean that it is easily accessible to many top destinations. To the west of the city lies the New Forest National Park, home to miles of beautiful countryside, unique wildlife and scenic market towns such as Lymington. To the east you’ll find the waterfront city of Portsmouth, home of the Royal Navy and attractions which include Gunwharf Quays, the Spinnaker Tower and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The medieval city of Winchester is located to the north of Southampton. BIG IDEA COMMUNITY FUND EASTLEIGH’S Pavilion on the Park has been awarded a special grant from the Southampton Airport Big Idea Community Fund to build a new outdoor activity building, opening on to Fleming Park. The new 4all Hangar will provide storage for specialist cycles and a focal point for developing work skills, independent living skills and recreation & leisure experiences. Jim Vaughan, Chairman of the Eastleigh Youth Trust and The Pavilion on the Park said: “Without this grant we would not have been able to proceed with our permanent store for 22 specialist cycles used in our Cycles 4 All’ project, or for the equipment needed for our new ‘Challenge 4 All’ and ‘Climate 4 All’ initiatives. The grant will allow us to build a store that opens onto Fleming Park, making it safer and much more convenient for our volunteers to prepare equipment for use, and for participants to experience and enjoy the new urban park area. ‘Smiles on faces’ are what we are looking forward to - of enjoyment and achievement!” Building work is set to begin in February with an aim for completion before summer.

Girl Guides enjoy First Aid training thanks to Southampton Airport Fire Service TEN Girl Guides from the 1st Hedge End Guides group can now boast a first aid qualification after successfully completing training provided by Southampton Airport Fire Service. The one day first aid qualification is a requirement for anyone undertaking awards such as Duke of Edinburgh's Award or The Baden Powell Challenge Award in Girlguiding and by adult volunteers in organisations such as Scouting and Guiding. Wendy Haley said “First Aid is an important life skill. All the Guides that attended are at present working towards their Baden Powell Challenge Award (the highest award in the Guiding section) and the completion of this first aid course counts towards the award. The Guides enjoyed the course and it was well delivered by two instructors at the airport. I am most grateful to them for giving up their time to deliver this important course for the Guides.” Southampton Airport Fire Service provide regular one and three day first aid and health and safety at work training to a wide range of groups including businesses, schools, youth groups and community organisations.

Southampton Airport’s ‘Mo Bros’ Grow for Movember 2013 on GENTS across Southampton Airport were sporting a range of moustaches last November for the worldwide phenomenon that is Movember – having fun while raising money for the serious issue of men's health; specifically prostatee cancer, testicular cancer and d men’s mental health. Female staff and follicly challenged chaps were also joining in the fundraising fun by sporting g fake moustaches. Even passengers got involved by voting for their favourite Southampton Airport moustache on Facebook and posing for photos, showcasing their own moustaches.
