MARIA C. KRAUSE founder and owner of Soul Sister's Universe tribe

A DREAM FROM A NERD AT HEART Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved the magic that books and magazines bring into my world. They have always offered a place where my imagination can run wild. As I was growing up, these books and magazines offered a glimpse into locations, and countries I would dream about visiting someday, idols I wanted to meet, concerts I wanted to go to and clothes I wanted to parade around in. Most importantly, they have also always included the inspiring stories of women who were living their dream life doing what they loved. I read absolutely everything I could put my hands on. Every magazine I could find, no matter what language it was in. I would even make up my own stories in my mind. Bit crazy, ey! It gave me the sensation of absolute FREEDOM, one of the most beautiful feelings in the world! Everything I looked through, I could see myself in these characters and individuals who were living out their dreams. I could feel every emotion they felt; I was right there with them dancing, screaming and singing along. I read everyone from J. D. Salinger, Stephen King and Ray Bradbury. It wasn’t until I found my all time favourite, Charles Bukowski, that my life changed. His stories were so real, so raw, and at times magical. They resonated with me so much that I would completely immerse myself in the fabulous stories this alcoholic man told about his life filled with craziness and amazing adventures. As a teenager, I started purchasing this weekly magazine called 13/20 which was aimed to young wild teenagers like myself. I remember saving my allowance every week and made sure that the old kind man at the newsstand would hold a copy for me. It was filled with all the things that I loved at that age: music, movies, 90’s fashion (if you are close to my age, you know what I’m talking about. LOL), new books, sex, life and everything in between. Ever since then, I have always dreamed about creating a magazine of my own and here we are today. I am turning 40 this year, precisely this month on the 15th, and I am finally making one of my biggest dreams come true. I am so blessed and grateful to have so many kick ass women who are helping me make this dream a reality. 2 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

To all these amazing women that didn’t hesitate for a second and jumped right into this project, sharing their love and expertise. I will be forever grateful for having you in my life. I want to give a big shout out to all these Soul Sisters, and highly encourage you to contact them if anything they do resonates with what you want and need in your life at the moment. - Camilla Kristiansen, Mentor for women who dream big and Editor in chief of SPOTLIGHT magazine. - Dijana Lugolli, Fearless and Success Coach. - Maira Medina Muheet, Stylist for real women and owner and founder of MAUE Co. - Elise McDonald, Make-up Queen. - Alyx Coble-Frakes, Health and Wellness Coach. - Bree Marie, Mindfulness Coach and owner and founder of LIVINGBREELY. - Anza Goodbar, Life and Business Coach, Trainer, Public Speaker, Author. GLOBAL SUCCESS AND BUSINESS COACH

DIJANA LUGOLLI MOTHERHOOD AND BUSINESS- Why they blend so well together and how they complement each other? 2 Key ingredients to Thrive as a Mother and an Entrepreneur

So, what is it so special with moms in business? Everything, I dare to say. Motherhood and business are complements and you can blend them into your life so perfectly. But, you need to be a bit conscious of those two roles in your life so you don't lose your woman sparkle/your purpose. I once did lose sight of my purpose but I am happy to say I have not only overcome it, I have found a way to pay it forward to other female entrepreneurs, especially moms. You can read a glimpse of my story and 5:5 rule for a healthy, happy and free life in Thrive Global that uncovers my journey from incompetence to the zone of genius. You should absolutely read this if you are a mom in business, mom to be and an entrepreneur or a female entrepreneur who desires to become a mom too at some point in the future. I will share 2 Key ingredients for Thriving Success Sauce and for more flow in your life.

.1. Be a Nerd but also listen to your Intuition - have your heart always in place

I wanted a baby even before I was ready to have one; back in 2007 when I was a fulltime student and full-time entrepreneur. I was 24 years old, married to the love of my life and in our 7th year of being together. You know the myth of seven years, right? You either make it or you break it.

"It's so important to trust your gut and not listen every single piece of advice that people may give you are developing your own business." Dijana Lugolli

5 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

I wasn't prepared but I knew I wanted to be the best mother to this human being. I started learning all about the new changes involving my body and I was fully excited to gain weight. Yeah I know, most of the mother's expecting are afraid and even very focused on not gaining weight during pregnancy, but I felt quite opposite. Being a skinny girl all my life, I knew that this pregnancy was my time to shine. Anyways, as the nerd I was and still am, I wanted to know everything about parenting, natural birth and breastfeeding. In my research about all things motherhood, I came across a flood of information. For first-time mothers you can easily get lost and overwhelmed with the amount of information that's out there. Not to mention the advice that many people feel the need to give you- do it like this or do it like that. It can be difficult with the conflicting information out there, but you really just listen to your gut feeling, your intuition, your heart and do what you feel is right. The same approach has to be used in starting your own business. It's so important to trust your gut and not listen every single piece of advice that people may give you when you are developing your own business. Â Just as I have always wanted to be a mother, I have always wanted to run my own business and be an entrepreneur. Â I remember my mom and dad always being frustrated with their jobs and bosses and always telling me: "You need to study a lot and work hard so you can be happy." The studying part wasn't a problem because by design I was pretty curious and wanted to learn as much as I could. I always loved reading and lectures were actually my favourite part of school. But the 'work hard' part just didn't click with me, and that's simply because I never saw my hard working parents as really happy or fulfilled. They appeared to be quite the opposite actually- broke and angry. They were strictly doing something that was convenient rather than something that they were passionate about and I suppose that's the alltime story of immigrants. Settling to be normal, to blend in, to be comfortable, especially if you are an expat or immigrant, has so much to do with the fact that we don't know how to move forward and where to seek help. It is so important to stay focused, determined and to listen to your passion and heart. Steer clear of those jobs of convenience and the ignore the advice to just keep your head down and work hard; really just trust your instinct.

2. Visualising - You need to see it and feel it in your mind - to experience it with your body As I was growing during pregnancy, mentally and physically, I felt fulfilled and excited. I was really prepared the closer the date was to approaching. This was also the first time I started visualising. I started practising visualisation in order to prepare for the delivery of our child. I visualized a perfect oasis on an island and pictured myself laying on the beach, drinking Pina Colada and life was just perfect. That was my picture day in, day out and I imprinted that in my mind; ready for the time when the pain would arrive. Imagine yourself in an absolute happy place, vibrating on the highest frequency- you can literally trick your brain into not feeling the pain. Visualisation can be used to help with dealing with pain but it can also help with crushing your business goals. The more sensational feeling you bring to your mind with visualisation the more your subconscious feels/sees what you want. Â The more your subconscious can see this, the more likely you will attract that in your reality. For example, when I was practising my oasis and preparing myself for my first child birth, I knew that I wanted to experience the happiest and the most joyful birth. I was able to do that by focusing on things that bring me happiness and joy and eventually practice became mastery. My birth was pure joy and happiness - simply because I wanted it to be so and because I envisioned it so, with full picturesque emotions long before it happened. Alongside with a birth plan and visualisation. The same applies for business. If you have any goal, this is what you should be doing for effective goal setting: 1. Be clear about WHY you want it - be intentional 2. Be clear about WHAT you want - regarding birth, parenting and also in your business 3. Be clear on Who can help you, how and when! Â 4. Visualize/make a vision board As always, nothing, in theory, makes sense if you don't try it. If you have a business idea or you want to try a new way of parenting, be committed and consistent in your trials. Learn by mastering your skills, entrepreneurial and parenting. Picasso did 50,000 work of arts in his lifetime, to 'only' have 10 most valuable masterpieces in the world. Don't be afraid to try, tweak and grow together with your business and your child.

WITH ALYX COBLE-FRAKES, HEALTH AND WELLNESS COACH

HOW TO COPE WITH

STRESS EATING Reducing stress is the number one way to move the needle on the scale and improve your health and wellness! My name is Alyx Coble-Frakes and I am a holistic health and wellness coach. I have been working with people to really uncover the correlation between what they eat, why they eat it, and how it affects their wellness for the last few years. I help people stop stress eating and form new supportive habits! This all started with my own journey back to wellness. In 2015 my health was in a pretty poor state. I was the heaviest that I had ever been, I was suffering with anxiety and depression, and I didn’t have any energy. My life felt as if it had been sucked dry of the joy that I knew was possible. I decided to make a change and dove deep into a path of healing and recovery. I was able to lose the weight, gained energy, and fixed so many things in my life. I had started following a very strict eating plan and I noticed a pattern pop up like never before. I had been a self proclaimed emotional eater in my life, but due to the restrictive nature of the plan (and my inner rebellious child) I started eating emotionally and choosing to consume large quantities of these “off limits foods”. The impacts were devastating. I didn’t gain the weight back, but I became accustomed to an ache in my belly as it would over extend itself. The guilt, shame, and restriction during the week followed by insanity on the weekend. . In public I was known as a “clean eater” so I had to keep my secret of over eating these off limits foods to myself. There was so much secrecy and isolation in the way I had started eating. It wasn’t until I removed the barriers to the shame and guilt, and started truly meeting my own emotional needs that the stress eating started to fall away. What I learned became the foundation of my total transformation and is what I now use to help other people stop stress eating. 10- SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

This is not a problem that was mine alone. the contrary, many adults admit to eating against their own best interest while in stressful situations, and unlike drugs and alcohol it is very socially acceptable to indulge. We need food in order to survive, which makes it very easy for us to justify indulging in every sugar coated whim that comes our way. The truth is the current food structure is set up in a way that encourages failure. Food companies intentionally create combinations of foods that are highly palatable and light up the addictive centors in our brains. Foods containing equal parts of sugar and fat are extremely difficult to put down. Because of what they do to our brain, they are even harder to stay away from once we have become accustomed to them. Food is often used in the beginning as a cheap replacement for meeting an emotional need, but over time the pathways in the brain are built that have us reaching for the food without even remembering the initial connection. When eating in this way becomes an ingrained habit, people must really look for some support to get out of that loop. Living with this type of disordered relationship with food leads to many problems. These include but are not limited to:

*weakened digestion *increased stress *weight gain *onset of preventable disease *moodswings *emotional dysregulation

These things have devastating long term impacts on the body and overall health. Typically dieting unfortunately does nothing to address this issue, and in fact makes it worse. Most mainstream diets encourage restricting portions, cutting out specific food groups, and depriving the body of certain things. Putting anything in an off limits category is extremely dangerous and leads rebellion and over indulgence in the long run.

12 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

Luckily there is a way to start to heal your relationship to food, and your body, and be able to stop stress eating once and for all. The way I work with clients is by helping them uncover the patterns that created the stress eating in the first place, and moving on to form new and supportive habits in their lives so that stress eating isn’t even an option for them any more. They don’t have to remember to be different, they just start showing up differently in their lives! If you are ready to heal your relationship to food and stop the stress eating madness, I have some tools that you can implement! Have Healthy Food On Hand: It would be great to think that we would make enough time in our busy lives to stop and prepare meals, and would never let ourselves get too hungry, but that just isn’t the case. Often times we get to a point that we are so famished that we grab whatever is quick and easy. By making what is quick and easy choices that are also healthy and nourishing, we can be sure to make better choices more often. This could include hummus and pre cut veggies, rice cakes with peanut butter and a banana, or a few hard boiled eggs with nuts and fruit. Keep simple go-to’s on hand! Breathe Before You Eat: Regardless of what you are about to eat, your body will not gain much from the food if you are eating in a stress response. Stress actually turns off your digestion and reduces your metabolic power. Taking 10 deep breaths each time before you eat anything (meal or snack) will help reduce the stress response and help you eat more mindfully. It will also help you pay attention to your bodies signals letting you know when you have had enough to eat. Keep a Food Journal: Journaling about what you are eating, and the way that food makes you feel energetically is a great way to start to create new and healthy habits. When we can see the correlation between what we are eating and how it is truly making us feel it is easier to return to the foods that are health giving to us. This is not about judgement but rather curiosity! Be honest and really take this as a chance to examine your habits!

THE INTERVIEW

Success Coach and Mentor for Women who dream BIG

CAMILLA KRISTIANSEN

PHOTOS BY Megan Conception and the others by Marthe Mølstre

Editor in Chief of SPOTLIGHT magazine.!

15 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

Camilla, you are both a coach and a mentor, how would you describe the difference when working with your clients? I started out as a coach, but after a while I saw that it was too many coaches out there, so to stand out I called myself a mentor. I feel that to be a coach you ask your clients questions, give them tasks they need to do until next session, as a mentor you listen more to your clients, guide them in the right direction and tell them to tune within and follow what's inside . How long have you been in business? Describe how you get started. I have been in business since 2012. I started my styling business in Norwegian, Then in 2015 I quit my corporate job and have never looked back since then. I started out as a fashion blogger in 2010. I wrote for some local newspapers, did makeovers on clients, personal shopper for clients and run events like Styleseminar. Then I wanted to go more international and saw that I loved to inspire women to get confidence both on the inside and the outside, and I knew that I was good to give advice and listen to people. Then I started my coaching business, made online courses, wrote my first book in English and got my first clients. Have your ideal clients changed since you first started your business? If yes, how so? Yes. In the beginning I was working with women to help them get blast through blocks like visibility issues, confidence, help them take action. Now I work with women that have big dreams, they can already have a business or they want to start one. They dare to be seen and they take action to follow their passion. What was the biggest break point in your life to decide you wanted to start your own business? I was fed up by doing the same thing all day long. I thought that there must be more for me, I must have more in me I can share with the world. Back then I was working as a Controller in the Norwegian Government, so the rules had to be followed. I just started because I was sick and tired to wait for things to happen, when I knew that I was the only one that was going to make it happen for myself.

16 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

Would you consider yourself a different woman, more confident, happy and fulfilled because you decided to follow your dreams? Yes. I'm a totally different woman. Before I was unsure about myself, very caught up in what all the others might think about me and putting myself out there with my services. Now I don't care about all that. I care about being happy, take care of my family and build a strong business that will help women all around the world to follow their dreams .How important would you consider self-development /mindset work while running an online and off line business? It's crucial. You have to build a strong success mindset, because success is an inside job. It's what you are telling yourself inside you head that matters. You have to force yourself to believe 100% in yourself and be your number 1 cheerleader in your business. You must get up in the morning and believe in what you do. Use books, inspiring videos, magazines like this to get yourself a strong mindset. What was your biggest challenge when you started your journey as an entrepreneur? I think it was to dare to be visible. I have always been the one that was shy, not speaking up for myself, I was hiding. When I started my business I had to be visible. It has been the best selfdevelopment course I could ever have taken to start my own business. All your shit will come up and you have to deal with it. It's worth it and every woman out there can make it. Trust in yourself and never give up. What are your biggest wins? In life it is my husband and kids. In business it is all my 35 books I have written, that I have published so far 14 magazines and over 30 online courses. That I have traveled to locations like Milan, Paris, Venice, Rome, London and work from those places. Also my biggest win are those women that I have impacted to believe in themselves and go for their dreams.

17 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

I know you are not a fan of this question "How is it to run a business while raising a family at the same time?". Can you share with us, why? I don't like this questions because men don't get asked "how do you deal with your business when you have kids?". I mean that women are equal to men.Thankfully I'm born in a country like Norway where women have equal rights as men. Men in Norway also take care of the kids, my husband do so many things with the kids and it gives them such a strong bond with him. Still we have a long way to go in Norway too, but we are getting there. I actually don't work that much. I did work tons in the beginning in the evening, but now i take my time out and chill in the evenings. Do you think that, as women, we conduct business in a different way? If yes, why? If not, why? Yes, I think that women get too emotional when it comes to their business. We often look at something that fails like WE are failing. Men will look at it from another angle and say it's the market, the timing was not right, it's only a matter of time before it takes off etc. Women attach emotions to it like it's the end of the world if something dosen't go right. That's very often why women don't go bankruptcy because they wait a long time before they take any risks. You have written a total of 35 books so far... Impressive! Would you mind sharing some tips for women who like to start writing a book. Just start! A book will not write it selves, you have to start to write. The way I do it is I first find the topic, then I outline my chapters and give myself a deadline. My books a short killer books straight to the point, no BS in between the lines. I think many women think that a book needs to be long. It doesn't. Mine are all 15.000 - 20.000 words. I just love to write and that is what keeps me going. 18 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

How does your business impact the life of your children? Do they want to follow your steps when they grow up? I think they understand that they can make money on their own. My youngest one, 6 years old, say she want to work just like me when she grows up. My oldest one wants to be a hairdresser, so I guess we have to wait and see what they will do when they grow up. As long as they are happy they can do whatever they want to do. Kids today are very bright and I see an amazing future for kids growing up today.

What does your ideal day feel and look like? I have two kind of ideal days. One is when I'm traveling abroad having my VIP days with clients in Paris, London etc where we meet up at a nice location, work on her action plan, visit the city and explore and end it with a glass of Prosecco. Another ideal day is when I work from home from my laptop, do some mentoring calls with clients, work out, eat a great lunch, go out and buy some fresh flowers, pick up my kids at school, make dinner, have a relaxing evening with the kids, husband and then I can relax and in the evening with e serie on Netflix.

If you could share something valuable with women who are just getting started, what would you like to tell them to do or not to do in their business?1 response If you are just getting started then focus on getting your message out there daily. show up, blog, post on Facebook, do videos, contact people. Then I would say start to create offerings. You have to have something to sell. Also focus on getting clients and making money. Also look at your expenses. Profit must be the key focus in your business. What you must NOT do it as simple as this; don't give up! If you go all in and do this business from your heart and soul and never give up, you will make it. Hang in there. There will be ups and downs, but it's worth it in the end.

19 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

What does the future look like for Camilla Kristiansen? What are your biggest dreams and goals?1 In the future I want to grow my business even more. Build a bigger team around me and scale things up. I will focus on being happy with my life and always do those things that I feel called to do, not follow what others are doing. I can see myself speaking more on stages around the world, travel to US, that Spotlight Magazine is growing and that my books are selling in more countries. I really just want to make a bigger impact in the world and reach more women with my message. I also want to retreats in Norway in beautiful location close to nature. I would like to thank Camilla Kristiansen with all my heart for saying yes and be the cover of my first ever online magazine. You are a true inspiration, everything I admire in a coach and a woman. Thank you!

Beauty Tips!

ELISE'S MAKE-UP UNIVERSE Today: BROWS, everything a Queen needs to know! Hey beauties!

I am so excited that the lovely Maria has asked me to write a monthly column in this amazing new magazine! So, over the coming months, I will be giving you some top tips for quick and easy make-up looks - covering everything from how to achieve the perfect base for a flawless finish, to getting a gorgeous smokey eye, without that ‘punched in the face’ look!! This month, I’m covering a hot topic that I get asked about all of the time – brows. When did they become such a big thing? Or have they always been a big thing and I just missed the memo?! You see, as a teenager I pretty much owned the monobrow, but then I spent most of the 90s plucking my poor babies into oblivion as I was a bit of a Wannabe Spice Girl! The result of which is that now at age 39 (!!) - I literally have about 4 natural brow hairs left on my forehead!!! And for years, I didn’t care, I just walked around browless and proud – but then I started my business and discovered the joys of eyebrow pencil, and how a sculpted brow can completely change the way you look. So what’s the big secret to the perfect brow? And with so many different products to choose from - powders, gels, pomades, liners – how do you select the right one? I’ve put together a quick guide to help you out… 21- SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

22- SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

Brow shape While brow style is personal preference - the shape of your brows is so important as they help to frame your face – and different face shapes suit different brow designs. My advice would be to get them professionally shaped with waxing or threading – don’t end up like me and pluck away until there’s nothing left! But if you do prefer to shape your own at home, my top tip is to use your brow products to fill them to your desired look first THEN pluck the stray brows that remain – that way you’ll avoid over plucking! What product? With so many to choose from, it can be confusing – but look at what you are working with first… Are your brows very sparse or non-existent? Then consider using a pencil brow liner or gel liner to outline the shape and then fill them with a brow powder for a natural finish. Natural brows have areas of sparseness? Using a fine tipped brow liner can help you create natural-looking individual hairs to fill those bald spots!! Do you have full natural brows that need taming? Use a brow pencil to define the outline shape and comb through a brow gel to keep them in place. You’ve got the perfect shape, you’ve selected your products, what now?

23 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

You’ve got the perfect shape, you’ve selected your products, what now? Here are my 10 steps to achieving the perfect brows every time.. Using a spoolie brush, comb your brows upwards Your brows should start in line with the edge of your nose and finish at the outer corner of your eye – use a brow or eye liner to map out your start and end points if you are a brow novice. If you have a natural arch or want to create one, use a brush or pencil and from the outer corner of your nose, line it up with the outer edge of your pupil and mark where it meets your brow, to get the perfect angle. Draw your outline shape, starting underneath your brow line - following your natural shape (if you have one!). Then outline the top. Use a pencil liner to create feather like strokes at the start if your brow to create a natural, graduated look. Depending on the condition of your brows, fill the mid to tail with brow powder, gel liner or pencil. You can use concealer around your brow to tidy up any mistakes, but I find a quicker way is just to take a face wipe and with your finger tip, trace along the line under you brow to give a sharper finish. Set with a brow gel (if using powder) or spray your spoolie with setting spray and comb through for brows that last all day. Stand back and look in the mirror from a distance to check the finished look – and remember they don’t have to match perfectly – they’re sisters not twins after all!!

See you next time Beautiful, Elise Mcdonald, Beauty and Confidence Expert

TOP TIPS Apply eye primer to your brow area before you start for brows that stay put all day! If using brow powders, gently comb through your brows with a spoolie after application for a softer look. For an ombre eyebrow effect, use two shades of powder, using the lighter one at the start of your brow and graduating it into a darker shade at the mid to tail point. Pop a highlighter or shimmer eyeshadow under the arch of your brow for a lifted, youthful look.

BREE MARIE MINDFULNESS COACH AND BLOGGER MINDFULNESS TRUTH BOMBS AND TOOLS!

Mean Girl Ego! THE ONLY MEAN GIRL IN MY LIFE... IS MY EGO! Hey there! So I posted this on my Instagram a while back and I really felt like it was a valuable perspective when doing some inner work in regards to the ego. The ego is something I began diving into after I read ‘The Power of Now’ by Eckhart Tolle. The way that I’ve begun to define my ego is pretty straightforward: It is a self-created identity. It’s that little voice inside my head that tells me things like: “You’re too fat to wear that.” “You’ll never be good at this.” “You’re better than that person.” “You should feel happy/sad/grateful/mad.” “You’re a horrible writer and no one will ever care what you have to say.” My personal favorite is when I try something new and she screams, “HEY, REMEMBER THAT LAST TIME YOU TRIED SOMETHING NEW AND TOTALLY SUCKED AT IT?! This is going to be just like that time - except worse!” Ugh. You know EXACTLY what voice I’m talking about. The scary thing is, sometimes we’re so used to hearing her that we actually listen to it and take her into consideration when making decisions. This only fuels her fire. But no need to fear. The simplest way to shut her up is to become AWARE of when she’s speaking to you. The next time you feel yourself doubting a new project or job that you took on - take a moment to pause and listen to that voice. Chances are, you’re more than qualified for that new job or are creative enough to take on that new project. Whatever she’s telling you she’s wrong. Tell her that Bree said so. Really take a moment to rationalize whatever negative or doubtful thought you’re having. She hates that. Now here is that Instagram post that I promised. 25 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

I honestly thought the ego was just some lyrics in a Beyonce song. Ok, not really. But I didn’t begin to explore what the ego was or even discover my own ego until recently and Wowza….it has truly been life changing. My ego is like Regina George from Mean Girls; manipulative, condescending and just straight up rude. On a daily basis, I confront my ego through meditation and it can be fucking terrifying. It’s undeniably the darkest part of myself and I used to feel an immense amount of shame for its existence. (Until I realized that literally, everyone has an ego – regardless if they acknowledge it or not) I went to a guided meditation the other day where the teacher asked us: “When has the ego ever served you? When has the ego ever supported your goals or dreams? When has your ego ever comforted you? It hasn’t, yet you continue to serve it all of your energy. You serve it your best and it just spits it right back up. It’s never going to be satisfied.” This resonated with me on so many levels. I’m not good at feeling satisfied or even content. I used to take a great amount of pride in never being satisfied because I thought it was my just my drive to succeed when in reality, it’s just my ego playing tricks. I never give myself the opportunity, not even a second, to just sit and be satisfied + grateful with the life that I’ve created for myself. So that's just something I've been working on by being mindful and grateful for each moment. If you’re curious about where I stand with my ego….well she’s still there. She pulls up every day and says “Get in loser, we’re going shopping.” And I have to do my best to say “You can't sit with us.”

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO CREATE A BETTER RELATIONSHIP

WITH YOURSELF AND THE UNIVERSE

Today's topic: EMPOWERMENT THROUGH COMMUNICATION

We are all unique! There is no one exactly like us in the world. We are all wired with specific preferences, how we communicate, how we love, qualities we find attractive, foods we enjoy, things that make us laugh, and passions that fill our soul. While we all may innately know that, , we are surprised when we have conflicts that can’t be resolved without a screaming match, slamming doors as someone walks out of the room or couples going to bed angry with the silent treatment. Such tactics cause a rift in our trust with others, which erodes our ability to give ourselves completely in a relationship and subsequently experience genuine intimacy. Intimacy is based on trust, and it is the fabric of our ability to communicate in a safe environment. It also has a profound impact on how we create physical intimacy. By default, we all demonstrate and communicate love in the way we want/need to receive it. We often subconsciously make assumptions that everyone is “just like us” and we get baffled when our attempts to communicate affection fall on deaf ears.

SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

When I was married, my husband and I had this struggle. We communicated in two entirely different ways; in two entirely different languages. While, we felt like we were communicating clearly and effectively, our efforts went unnoticed. It left us feeling frustrated, rejected and lonely. As humans, we have a longing to be accepted and known deeply by others, especially our mate, lover or partner. When we fail to communicate in a manner that offers a connection, we start losing the ability to build intimacy. It is essential to recognise the differences in how you and your partner communicate if you want to build deep levels of intellectual and physical intimacy. One of my favorite relationship books, The Five Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman, sheds light on how different we can be when it comes to communicating with those we care about the most. We all have a particular propensity to give and receive love in the way we are most comfortable. He has broken it down into five primary languages: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time and Physical Touch. Dr. Chapman outlines how each of five languages can be applied to first our personal life and then our professional working environments as well. While his book primarily focused on the personal relationship, Chapman also understood that communicating effectively in the workplace was equally important. Understanding how people wanted and needed to feel appreciated in professional settings was paramount to relationship building and making people feel valued. Let’s explore how each language is applied first personally and then professionally.

28 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

WORDS OF AFFIRMATION When this is a person’s primary love language, they need encouraging words and affirmations from their partner. They have a deep longing to feel appreciated and that what they do matters. Saying, “I love you” is nice, but it’s not specific enough to touch their inner being. Try saying something like “I appreciate it when you make dinner each night. You take time to plan out delicious menus that make me feel loved and cared for, thank you.”

These types of statements

add value to your partner and make them feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. Speaking harshly, raising your voice or name calling can be remarkably wounding to a person with this love language. While forgiveness may be offered the words and the hurt are not forgotten quickly. In a workplace environment this type of person equally feels appreciated by the words that you use. People have a need to be affirmed through positive and encouraging words. This type of interaction charges their battery and builds motivation to give more. People who feel valued are loyal. These words can come in the form of a conversation or a written card. Be aware that introverts and extroverts like to be affirmed in different ways. Take note if you’re accolades should be shared privately or publicly to keep the intended sentiments intact. Negative words can feel like a punch to the gut and entirely demotivate a person with this primary appreciation language. Be intentional about the words and tone you use when dealing with delicate situations.

ACTS OF SERVICE People who experience loving communication through this love language don’t care about your words. They are focused on your ability to see when they need help without them asking. Actions like washing dinner dishes, bathing and tucking the kids into bed, or picking up the dry cleaning on your way home from work speak volumes to them. Those simple actions communicate that you value their contributions to your relationship and how they make your life run more smoothly. Broken promises, making messes for them to clean up after, or thoughtless acts suck the air out of their sails and make them feel undervalued and taken advantage of. In the office those who fall under the umbrella of communicating by Acts of Service are always busy getting things done. As actions speak louder than words to this type of person, they show appreciation by always delivering project milestones on time, and they expect the same in return. Nothing makes them feel more undervalued than when someone wastes their time. If you make a commitment to someone with this appreciation language, don’t offend them by not following through.

30 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

RECEIVING GIFTS Some people need something tangible to feel loved. Gifts make them feel appreciated and valued. The gift doesn’t have to be expensive to be meaningful to someone with this primary love language. Thoughtfulness goes a long way in communicating love to them. For people with this primary language, not having something tangible to touch and feel can cause them to doubt the connection. Bringing home flowers or tickets to the big ballgame say volumes to this person’s heart. On the job, the person with this appreciation language is motivated by incentives. Winning tickets to the big game or a gift card for dinner when the team achieves a goal means more than words of praise for a job well done. Taking note of a job well done and rewarding it with a tangible item or experience will keep the fire in their belly burning.

QUALITY TIME This language focuses on action, not on words. Talk is cheap for people who speak this love language. Feeling like they are the center of your world brings about feelings of safety and comfort. Postponing dates, being distracted when you’re together or failure to listen can be especially hurtful. Being present when you’re with them is crucial to their sense of security. At work, people who have quality time as their primary appreciation language want to spend time with you. They want to be noticed in meetings. They need to know they are valued, and that they are essential to the team or organization. When spending time with them, give them your undivided attention and avoid any interruptions. The time spent with these individuals does not have to be long, but it does need to be focused. Checking email or sending text messages can be hurtful and disheartening.

31 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

PHIYSICAL TOUCH For this person, physical touch says it all. Everyday touching like hugs, pats on the back, holding hands, kissing and cuddling reaffirm affection. Non-sexual touch is just as affirming as physical touch in the bedroom. You don’t have to go overboard with public displays of affection to get their attention, but being touchyfeely every now and then makes them feel safe and secure in the relationship. Any threat or instance of physical abuse would be irreparable for this person. In the work environment, you have to be careful that your touch isn’t misunderstood. Limit your contact to a firm handshake, a pat on the back or a side hug. Appropriate touch is essential for building connection and relationship with associates who have this primary appreciation language.

Dr. Chapman’s book effectively outlines how we may communicate in five different ways in our personal and professional lives. Identifying how we ourselves, our loved ones and work colleagues communicate is essential in establishing and building trust and genuine intimacy. Knowing and understanding how people in our circle want and need to be shown love and appreciation is critical to building lasting and meaningful relationships. Understanding that we all have different ways of giving and receiving love and appreciation makes us more effective communicators. Making people feel valued and appreciated is our primary responsibility if we want to see the people in our lives blossom and reach their full potential. Being intentional about knowing how to motivate them will create lasting relationships, loyalty and a sense belongingness we all crave. Together, we can always create more than we can alone. How are you building into the lives of people in your life?

The life of an entrepreneur fashionista...

Maira Muheet

Hi Maira…Thanks for being part of our first ever edition of our online magazine, SOUL SISTER’S UNIVERSE. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you get started in your incredible journey in fashion! I am 27 years old and I live in Chicago, Illinois. My passion for fashion started at a very young age. My mother is from Mexico and she used to model. After, she moved to Chicago where she worked in a local boutique in Pilsen, a historic neighborhood on the Lower West Side of Chicago. Who is your biggest muse/inspiration? My mother has been my biggest inspiration because she is so beautiful and strong. I grew up in a humble and hard working family. I quickly learned that if I wanted to succeed, then it would require lots of determination.

When did you find your passion for fashion? It was not until I reached high school that I wanted to express myself through fashion. I started to develop my own style. Now, I do not have the typical model figure. I am 5’0” and curvy but it never stopped me from wearing what I liked or feeling less confident about myself. I think the most important lesson I learned over the years is, “it is not what you wear but how you wear it.” The fashion industry has many rules and society alone places an incredible amount of pressure on women for beauty. I struggled for many years with maintaining my weight and a healthy lifestyle. Nothing at all has given me the health I seek besides happiness and peace. You have to be happy and love yourself in every way shape or form.

34 - SOUL SISTER'S UNIVERSE

What inspired you to start your own company, MAUE CO.? My early working years I was employed as a personal stylist and in sales. I switched roles to build more stability by working in healthcare. It required like most jobs a 9-5 schedule, 40 hrs a week. I saw myself every morning putting on a pair of scrubs or office work clothes, going for a coffee run, and rushing through traffic. It didn’t take long for me to realise that I needed to do something more. Life couldn’t be this way. The more time passed, the more I began to question if what I was doing was what I really wanted to do.

Where you get your inspiration for your style? I was able to travel in my free time and see different cultures. I have connected with amazing women along the way. In my recent trips to Mexico, I had an opportunity to connect with family. People like myself from humble beginnings, who are not usually given the chance to achieve their dreams. Countless times I have been told that I would never make it. I’ve been told I dream too much or want too much. I’ve been told to stick to what works best and not to take risk. This year, I decided to challenge myself and go for it! I remember one night coming up with an idea and the next day waking up with a plan to execute it. What’s your personal experience as an entrepreneur? It has not been easy at all but it’s been the most rewarding experience. I have learned so much more about myself. I have built up the courage to fail. YES! To fail and not once, but over and over, as many times as it will take to finally completing my dream. I have learned that life is about taking risks, being fierce and accepting the outcomes of those risks. I am a young, strong, beautiful and independent woman. I love to encourage and empower all women to step out their comfort zones, to be brave, be themselves and be beautiful.

From a fun night out, to this... A girl's night out, turned into a lifetime nightmare

There are certain things that as a woman, we feel the need to keep to ourselves. Especially if you’re a woman that has to keep a specific reputation, according to society. I’m talking about the reputation of being an absolute BITCH, hard as nails, “Don’t FUCK with me kinda girl”; or the other kind of girl… The one that wants to be free but is so afraid of what others might say, of how others would treat her if they truly knew the real WOMAN she is and what she has gone through. There are a lot of things that women decide to keep to themselves, mainly because we are built that way: “If you want to be someone in your life… If you want to have it all… If you want to stand your ground… Then, chin up, stay strong and build a wall that will protect you and stay always at the defence and be ready if shit goes down.” Yes, we cry, we are vulnerable, we can’t stand the pain of our periods… And BTW, that makes me think that God wasn’t a woman after all.. But that’s my own opinion on it. LOL! But when the time comes to show our fangs and nails, there’s no doubt, we are ready… We were born ready! Call it animal instinct, call it woman instinct… I like to call it, STEPPING INTO OURSELVES. We are who we are, in every shape and form, with all our flaws and virtues… WE ARE when the moment comes, fierce and warriors. Would you agree with me Soul Sisters? How many times you have come across an unexpected bullshit situation and still power through and come out on the other side, more fierce than ever! I came across this poem by Gail O’rourke who I am friends in Facebook, I know her in the virtual world through her daughter, who I have the most upmost respect and admiration… I can see where she gets her strength from. Gail has wrote this absolutely powerful poem that describes exactly what some women go through and are afraid of speaking up about...Myself included.
