Momentum 2011 Programme

WELCOME OPENING WORDS FROM THE PILAV, ONE OF OUR HOSTS FOR THE WEEK...

Hello.

It’s fantastic to have you with us at Momentum 2011! Life’s moving fast these days isn’t it? It only seems like yesterday that we started Momentum as an alternative meeting venue at our Soul Survivor events, now we’re here in our seventh year as a separate event, and, as with you, loads has changed… As we grow we face some massive changes. Our teenage days are behind us (some further than others) and often we begin to lose that sense of wonder and excitement we had with the world. We see a family member struggle with illness, we don’t get the job we want, or we got the job we wanted but it’s turned out to be pretty stressful. We can face money issues, suffer set-backs and disappointments and sometimes it feels like God increasingly fits into a Sunday sized box. But we don’t want that to be the case. At Momentum we’ve always been about the same stuff: falling more and more in love with Jesus in worship, through reading his word and waiting on his Spirit. That’s about growing, changing and developing. As we get older our prayer is that our view of God wouldn’t shrink, but grow. Our hope is that the older we get the more - not less - excited we are about God; that as life changes we fall more in love with - and become more dependent on - the one who created us! That’s the point of Momentum: to help us grow with God as we wind through life. Our prayer is that in the next five days we’d capture an incredible vision of Jesus to take back to our working/student lives; a vision that would grow our expectation of him and his ability to impact and change our world. No limits. We pray that we leave, being more in love with him. So, we hope you have a great five days. We’ve got some exceptional speakers with us this week, a whole new venue to drink coffee in, the return of a few familiar music and chill out spots and loads of time to simply hang out and have a laugh. Enjoy, and hopefully we’ll see you around. With love

Mike IMPORTANT INFO: WELCOME

As we get older our prayer is that our view of God wouldn’t shrink, but grow.

Momentum 2011 Programme

WHAT IS MOMENTUM? Whether you’ve been to every Momentum event ever or are a first time newbie it’s always good to go over the basics, so here’s a little bit about Momentum, Soul Survivor (the organisation who run the event) and the point of the next five days. Are you sitting comfortably? Right, then we’ll begin. Part one:

Part two:

The beginnings

Soul what?

The story of Momentum ultimately began 2000 years ago when Jesus lived, died and rose again. Momentum just wouldn’t exist without him and the incredible way he reveals our loving heavenly father.

Momentum grew out of the Soul Survivor summer events that are aimed at teenagers. These have been running since 1993, but back in 2004 we began realising that God was asking us to keep serving those teenagers when they got into their twenties and beyond. Hence Momentum was born and seems to bring us into contact with more and more of you each year, which is nice.

IMPORTANT INFO: WHAT IS MOMENTUM?

03

Momentum 2011 Programme

We want to stay passionate about him and seeing him work in the world.

That’s what these five days are all about; finding ways to help us grow stronger with God and again be inspired, equipped and encouraged TO LIVE OUR LIVES FOR him.

Part three:

the here & now

So this is where we’re at: Momentum exists to help you navigate through life, all the while growing stronger in your relationship with God. In our twenties and thirties we face some absolutely massive changes and transitions, from leaving home, to starting a career, from redefining ourselves at university to getting married or even starting a family. We’re likely to experience loss and grief and we might develop a less ‘me’ centric view of the world. All in all we change and it’s essential we stay plugged into our faith, and our relationship with Jesus. We want to stay passionate about him and seeing him work in the world. IMPORTANT INFO: WHAT IS MOMENTUM?

This isn’t just about our personal relationship with Jesus, but also about how God can - and will - use us to change his world.

Momentum 2011 Programme

A TYPICAL DAY Every day at Momentum is packed full of stuff to do, places to hang out and things to see! Your day may or may not involve one, a few, or all of the following things. Remember, everything kicks off with a main meeting in the Big Top at 7:00pm on Day 1! IT'S A PRETTY PACKED OLD DAY WHEN YOU COME ALONG TO MOMENTUM...

9:30am: The first seminar slot of the day (except on Day 5)

11:00am Our main morning celebration in the Big Top (it starts at 10:00am on Day 5)

1:00pm Everything jumps into life. Our Cafés open, workshops take off (not literally like an aeroplane, they just happen), and a whole series of sporting events roar into action. Check the day planner for all the details (see p30 onwards).

2.30pm Seminar slot number two… what will you go to?

4.00pm Our final seminar session of the day gets going

7:00pm Main evening celebration at the Big Top!

9:00pm (ish) Take a deep breath and prepare to read this next sentence… Chill out in a café, spend some time praying at the Furnace, dance yourself silly down at the Union, get some extra time to sing to your creator in our late night worship sessions, grab a pint in Cafe Uno, be entertained in the Live Lounge, check out a film in Celluloid, shoot some hoops in the sports arena, or just lie in your tent and drift off to sleep listening to all the bustle outside. The choice is yours. Stuff generally winds down by around midnight, at which time you can crawl back into your sleeping bag and get a bit of shut eye. IMPORTANT INFO: A TYPICAL DAY

BACK TO THE FUTURE WHY, WHEN YOU're AT MOMENTUM IS A WEEK JUST FIVE DAYS?

Remember Marty McFly and Doc Brown cruising through the decades in a super fast, super cool, super charged Delorean? What a time mess they got themselves into.

it’s got something to do with a quantum flux on the A303 or M5 (depending on which way you come).

Well, believe it or not, they aren’t the only ones. For some reason, whilst at Momentum, you’ll lose two days from your week. We reckon it’s got something to do with a quantum flux on the A303 or M5 (depending on which way you come). Not only will you lose two days, but all days will lose their names… you must have caused some massive disruption in the time space continuum. Don’t worry; we’re here to guide you through. Just follow the lingo below and all will eventually sort itself out. Friday 19th August will be known as Day 1 Saturday 20th August is henceforth Day 2

FEEDBACK

Sunday 21st August has become Day 3

We want to know what you thought of your time at Momentum. Were there enough seminars on stuff you care about? Did you feel a venue could have been improved? Are there bands or speakers you thought could’ve added something different? Tell us your thoughts by checking out www.soulsurvivor.com/ momentum when you get home and you’ll be able to fill out a little online survey that’ll help us improve things for 2012!

Monday 22nd August now likes to be called Day 4 Tuesday 23rd August changed its name by Deed Poll to Day 5

The Big Top

THE REASON WE'RE ALL HERE... AND NO, WE DON'T MEAN BECAUSE OF A BIG CIRCUS TENT...

There’s a whole pile of stuff going on at Momentum, but twice each day we take time out to gather together in the Big Top for space to worship God, learn from his word and wait on his Spirit. Worship:

If you’re familiar with Soul Survivor then you’ll know the deal: these are things we’ve been throwing together for years and they are at the core of who we are and what we’re all about.

They aren’t a magic formula for a successful meeting, just some things that allow us to engage with God, and that give him the highest profile in what we do! If you’re new to it all or fancy a recap, here’s what we mean:

As followers of Jesus we know he asks us to live lives of worship to him, lives that put others first and seek to bring his love into our world. But we’re also so grateful for all he has done for us that we want to thank him. Worship gives us a chance to draw close to God in an incredibly intimate way; we can seek him in the situations we’re facing, no matter how hard they are. Our times of

Momentum 2011 Programme

THESE THINGS are at the core of who we are and what we’re about. Biblical teaching:

The Bible is God’s word. It’s full of the lives and stories of people who’ve done great things for God… it’s also full of people who’ve done pretty average things for God. In short it’s full of people like us, with all their struggles and issues. It’s full of God-breathed stories that have lasted thousands of years and get to the core of human emotion and desire. As such, we’ll again delve into our Bibles to try and discover what God is saying to us today. Andy Croft will be looking at Paul in our morning studies and we'll also have the help of some other chaps in our meetings too!

Prayer ministry: Generally towards the end of each meeting we invite God by his Spirit to meet with us. It’s not that he’s not already present, of course he is, but we want to make some specific space in the busyness of our lives to allow him to do what he wants. These are his meetings, so the people leading are always looking to take a step back and get out of the way so God can move. We’ll often invite people forward to be prayed for, and our hope is that they leave feeling more in love with - and passionate about - God, healed from all kinds of physical or emotional stuff and equipped to live out their lives for him. If you’re not familiar with ministry, don’t worry, Mike and the team will explain things as we go, and we’ve also got some guidelines for praying for others near the back of the programme. There’s also an experienced ‘Enabling’ team who’ll be around the main meetings to help where needed. VENUES: THE BIG TOP

LOCATION Inside the Big Top, the far side

Tucked away in a little corner of the cavernous Big Top is a cheeky little café! It’s the perfect place to grab a quiet few minutes over a hot brew and a pastry before the start of the main meetings. It’s also open to help all those post meeting reflections get from your head into the real world, via a conversation with one of your mates! The team have some expert coffee knowledge and have therefore gone to town and brought some Espresso machines with them. So now you can get fully caffeinated-up to help you stay awake during Mike’s longer talks.

Just before Jesus was arrested, trialed and crucified, he gathered his disciples and ate with them. He left them a ritual to follow that indicated the kind of sacrifice he was about to make. And so, in remembrance of him and his love for us, we take time out to share bread and wine, and thank God for all he has done in our lives. It’s a really special time, and more often than not, one of the highlights of our week, so make sure you get up for it!

Our hope and prayer is that you leave Momentum more in love with Jesus, so if that’s happened, we’d love to hear from you! We’d love to hear of anything that’s helped you out so do one of the following to let us know:

We’ll read these on site and might read out a few in the main meetings so you can hear each other’s stories (you don't have to add your name if you'd like it to be anonymous or ask us to keep it private if you prefer).

LATE NIGHT WORSHIP join with others who are worshipping God in a cowshed...

Feel like you need more time and space to simply worship God? If something’s been stirring in you all day, the main meetings just didn’t go on long enough or you just want a bit of a different, more stripped-down musical alternative to help you connect with God, then the late night worship sessions are for you!

Late Night Worship Map Ref: C5

Each night, just before you crawl into your damp tent, pop along to the hour-long sessions to join with others who are worshipping God in a cowshed, just like the shepherds, those wise old magi and a host of angels on that very first Christmas!

Hosted by the awesome Rend Collective Experiment! The Rend Collective are brill. They are a family of musicians and artists that are trying to make music that speaks from their hearts whilst also conveying some of God's heart! There are about 15 of them in total and they herald from Bangor, in Northern Ireland, hence the accents. They’ll be offering us their own take on using music to express our thoughts, love, hearts, emotions and praises to God, so join in the journey! VENUES: LATE NIGHT WORSHIP

LOCATION The Furnace, Map Ref: C4

The Furnace is our dedicated prayer space. It’s a little hidden away… and that’s the point, most people don’t just stumble into it, they seek it out as a place to spend some quality time with Jesus. Pop in to pray for the world around you, your mates, the stuff you’re facing or just grab thirty minutes to chill out before God and listen to his voice in the calmness. There’s a few creative bits and bobs to help you get your prayers onto paper if that takes your fancy, and a team of monastic-like hermits who’ll offer sagely whispered thoughts on the hour, every hour (maybe). So, get on your pilgrimage and search out the Furnace for a quiet, contemplative reward. VENUES: FURNACE // THE CHAT ROOM

OK, we don’t want to give you the wrong impression. This isn’t one of those chat rooms that they have on the internet, you know, those places that were really popular back in the 90s before some clever chap came up with the idea of social networking. Nope, this is actually a real, physical room with a wall you can touch and chairs you can sit on. It also has people in it who love a good conversation. Got something you’re going through that it’d be worth sharing with someone or have a load of questions about your faith? Meander on down to the Chat Room to help you begin to work it all through. You don’t have to be facing a massive crisis to find a little chat helpful… you might have experienced God in the main meetings and just want to talk to someone about it. Whatever is on your mind, pop in, chat to one of the friendly faces and you might even get offered a cuppa in return!

Even wild boars couldn’t keep Café Uno from pitching up again (and Uno hates wild boars, they have weird faces). With that determination we’re convinced that the Uno plan of attack will have you climbing the walls to get in early:

Uno Afternoons Stretching out in front of you like a cactus flanked highway come our special edition Uno Afternoons. Get on board and you’ll find Uno plays host to some of our awesome seminars so pop along, grab a coffee and settle in for an afternoon of laid-back, thought-provoking seminar action.

Hosted by Our Dad! Pumped up like Lewis Hamilton’s tyres, hotter than all the curries ever invented by man and sharper than an isosceles triangle come our Uno evenings. Packed out with a queue round the block and a ‘one out, one in’ door policy, over the years the Uno Evenings have become legendary nights courtesy of Momentum old-timers Our Dad who dish out the finest Soul, Jazz and Funk tunes that time – and space – has to offer! If you can get in, you’ll be greeted by some of the most contagious sounds you are ever likely to hear. Prizes aren’t just dished out to the winners of break dance battles, but also to those who manage to stand still for more than 20 seconds! It really is that good, like chips and gravy or a long Bank Holiday weekend.

In case you hadn’t picked it up from the café title, cakes and a range of teas and coffees will be served at Café Uno. Plus there will be a bar so you can pop in for a pint too!

Grab your mates (even the ones who say “ooooh stop it, I really can’t dance”) and drag them onto the floor by their hair. After a while they’ll be throwing shapes like no-one’s business (last year squares, triangles and even octagons were found all over the place). THE ULTRA CHIC, ULTRA ETHICALLY AWARE BOHEMIAN HANG OUT...

As the name suggests, the Soul Action Café is also the place to get your head and heart into our partnership with relief and development organisation Tearfund. This year we’re launching a new series of stuff just for Momentum around the question ‘What If?’ When you’re in the Café, just ask one of the team what Soul Action is up to this year, and their impassioned response will fill your head with more world-changing ideas than you ever dreamed possible.

Sign up for a slot and you’ll have the chance to perform a cover or a self-penned piece (say that fast five times) in front of a restless crowd, all of whom are waiting to see the next big thing (and we don’t mean the Blackpool Tower, which is a very Big Thing). Athough generally musical, the Live Lounge features a vast array of entertainment to keep you interested… they even have some stuff to tickle those taste buds too!

Back again this year to host the Live Lounge are our very good mates [dweeb] who’ll be making sure everything runs smoothly and that any empty slots get filled with some decent tunes! We’re sad to say that [dweeb] will be bringing their musical journey to an end this autumn (boooo!) so this will be one of the last chances to see the band before they go out with a bang on their massive farewell tour in September.

Now in a bigger venue! As if that wasn’t enough, we are cranking it up this year and giving Live Lounge a new, bigger venue. More people, more music, more great atmosphere. Live Lounge is definitely not to be missed! VENUES: THE LIVE LOUNGE

Based on some rumours of Attenborough’s past experience with prehistoric creatures, we’d suggest you have your wits about you, don’t stray too far and always carry a torch (and tazer type weapon) when inside the ToolShed.

what's the deal? The deal is this. At Momentum, the only place we allow marketing is in the ToolShed. If Chris Akabusi had come to Momentum he would have loved our sports venue. A-woooo-ga! Unfortunately he hasn't ever been, so you’ll have to take us at our word – it is awesome. Come down and nail a 3-pointer in the B’ball court or hit an unstoppable pile driver miles over the bar in the newly formed ‘Momentum Inter-Toto Football Cup’. You’ll be as excited as Will Ferrell in Step Brothers at how many activities you can do. Here’s the list:

Basketball

Five a Side

Straight outta Compton (or Brooklyn, or anywhere else with a cool urban sounding name) comes the end-to-end, up and down grittiness of basketball, the original street sport! Lay it up, slam dunk or alley-oop your way through the threeon-three tournament to prove you have the maddest skills at Momentum. Ghetto blasters and rap music will be provided. Please bring extra large shorts and insanely big trainers.

Forget the controversy over the 2018 World Cup bid, we’re bringing football home by stealing it from the grubby paws of Sepp Blatter and giving it a comfy summer residence in Somerset. Straight up Match of the Day action for you and four mates to take on all challengers and hopefully hold aloft our very own Jules Rimet (still gleaming) trophy. Remember, there’s only one way to beat them, get round the back.

Volleyball

Panna Football

Scholars trace the origin of Volleyball to the jungles of Papua New Guinea where scantily clad tribesmen still try to catch birds with a massively oversized net. The game of volleyball is now played worldwide by people with ridiculous tans and welltoned bodies. Other than that, we’re not sure of the rules. It’s fun though.

Football in a cage. What could be more exciting (other than a snow day)? A quick fire, to the death (or goal), two-aside tournament, invented by Romans who weren’t keen on the bloodlust involved in the usual Gladiatorial contests. Be warned, sweatier than threeweek old mushrooms and just as smelly.

Day 4 from 2:00pm

Days 2-5 from 2:00pm

Ultimate Frisbee

Board Games

A game responsible for more than half of the UFO sightings there have ever been and hence banned by successive US governments between 1948 (when it was invented in a deserty place called Roswell) and 1982 when for some reason it got big in California (maybe because it’s not very complicated and is really just a glorified game of catch).

Like your games to be a bit more sedate? Well, depending on your level of competitiveness, this might - or might not - be for you! Check out our brand new giant board games!

Not convinced? How about this piece of propaganda… with every foot put on the floor, stride taken and bead of sweat produced you will be raising money for Soul Action who support all sorts of work amongst poor communities around the world. Changed your mind yet?!! Grab a number and a sponsor form at the Soul Action stand in the ToolShed and get raising some cash…Quality cakes, a reviving elixir and some very smiley team members greet your arrival at the summit, so enjoy your hard earned rest.

We can’t promise an appearance from Keith Chegwin or Frank Bruno (they’re both busy opening new Asdas and making appearances on Loose Women) but the show must go on! Join in all the fun of the fair by launching water bombs, skidding in the mud and generally having a laugh trying to compete for the much fought after crown of Momentum 2011 Mini-Olympics Champion! What an awesome year for film. There have been some absolutely massive smashes in the last twelve months, some of which have grossed more than the GDP of a small developing nation (we’ll leave you to interpret the ethical implications of that). Excitingly, we’re honoured to have some of those very films with us at Momentum this year, so head on down to Celluloid to see Leonardo Di Caprio and his chums doing their thing on the side of a cowshed wall (we’re sure they always imagined their careers would reach such great heights).

The Kings Speech

The Social Network

Inception

Err, er, uhhh. Th th th the K-k-kkinn-ngs ssssspppeach i-i-i-issss a v-v-very g-g-goog-g-ooo-good f-f-f-f-film. Ok, enough stupid writing. It’s confusing. The film isn’t. It’s great. It’s won awards and that. They prove you should watch it, even though the speech it’s all about is only actually a few minutes at the end of the film (err anti-climax).

The shadier side of your favourite online hangout is revealed! Who knew that Justin Timberlake was an expert in social media and web technologies? What we did know is that Aaron Sorkin is a master script-writer and he doesn’t disappoint in this film that is way more engaging than it has any right to be.

Forget nagging, in the not-todistant future they’ve come up with a way of getting someone to do exactly what you want. It’s quite complicated, involves invading your dreams, and gets pretty aggressive. Maybe they should just try a presentation or TV adverts? Still after you’ve seen this you won’t want to sleep for a week, just in case.

Showing: Day Four

SCREEN TWO Vintage Flicks

Right then, forget CGI, 3D and all that peripheral technological stuff that gets in the way of a decent movie. We’re going back to when cinema had stories, and my word, there are some awesome flicks to get those nostalgic memories coughing and spluttering their way into the present! OK, get your rubix cube or space hopper out and join in the retro remembrance with these beauties:

The Princess Bride

Morning Glory The scoop behind morning TV shows! Jeff Goldblum is still confused, Rachel McAdams (that one from the Notebook) is the heroine and there’s some sexism and lovey-dovey stuff in there too. Is it a romantic comedy? Probably. But sometimes that’s exactly what you need after a long day on a agricultural showground. Showing: Day Five

ET From the summer of 1982, irrefutable proof that aliens exist and that Drew Barrymore saw them before she ever touched a drug. Showing: Day One

Remember when Marty McFly was the coolest person ever and a clapped-out old car turned into a time-machine? Re-live the memories, unless you’re too chicken...

An iconic film from the 1960s with the queen of old-school beauty and poise, Audrey Hepburn. Did you know that the actor who plays Paul (Ms Hepburn’s on screen love-interest) is also Hannibal from the A-Team? We certainly don’t pity that fool!

Sparklers, Map Ref: C6 Rockets, Map Ref: A4

Kids are awesome. So awesome that instead of just letting you get on with looking after them, we’re offering to help out whilst you’re at Momentum! We want to make sure that even the littlest ones that are with us have a great time at Momentum, and that their parents get the chance to head to a main meeting at least once a day. So, here’s what is on offer:

Rockets (5-11s):

Sparklers (0-4s):

It’s all kicking off in Sparklers. Be warned. There’s more energy released in this session than in the Cern hadron collider. Goggles will be provided for parents/guardians as they come to retrieve their highly supercharged children.

Crazy, wacky sessions for the young-uns, including some manic worship, jump up and down time and a load of Bible stuff too.

Registration On Day 1 bring your child/ children along to the Rockets venue to register them for the kids work sessions (activities will be provided to entertain them). We’ll take your details and give you a security card which you will need to keep safe so that you can pick your child up without any fuss at the end of each session. Children will also be signed in and out for additional security. Children aged 10-11 can leave sessions unaccompanied if you let us know this is your preference at registration. VENUES: KIDS STUFF

Special Needs We want to welcome and include all children and accommodate their particular needs, wherever possible. If your child has additional needs that we would benefit from being aware of, then please do speak to the kids team leader at the first available opportunity.

Movie Night for the Little Ones At 7pm every night we’ll show a kids film in the Celluloid venue. One adult can accompany up to four children (and for obvious reasons children can’t be admitted alone). All movies are U rated and are around an hour and a half long.

SEMINARS MORE SEMINARS THAN YOU COULD WAVE A MASSIVE STICK AT...

Momentum is all about learning to follow Jesus as we grow, change and deal with all the stuff that life throws at us! In the Main Meetings we’ll often focus on the bigger picture of our lives, but our massive seminar programme gives us the chance to investigate things a little more specifically. There are over 70 seminars at Momentum 2011, with a huge range of speakers and subjects, so hopefully you’ll find a few things each day that are itching where you’re scratching!

TIMES

Up, in and out

Days Two to Four: 9.30am, 2.30pm & 4pm Day Five: 2.30pm & 4pm

We’ve categorised our seminars in the following streams (they aren’t actually streams with flowing water, that’d be weird and you’d end up getting wet and cold).

LOCATION All over site. See the Day Planner (p34) and site maps (p50) for details

As there are so many seminars, the categories of Up, In and Out should help you get your head round the general gist of each session with just a quick scan of the page!

Up Look up. What do you see? Sky? Clouds? The inside of your tent? Maybe, but spiritually we often look up when we’re trying to connect with God. Whether it’s worship, the Bible, prayer or something else, this stream is all about who God is, how we communicate with him and how he communicates back.

In Look in. What goes through your head when you look at yourself? I wish I was a better Christian? If only I had a haircut like Mike P? Looking in is about the stuff God does inside us and with us. Expect to find seminars on the Holy Spirit, ministry, healing, image and all that stuff on character we like too!

Out Look out! It’s a big wide world out there and God calls us, in fact longs for us, to be deeply involved in working with him to change it! Get into this stream of seminars to find stuff on justice, living out your faith when you are back home, at Uni or work, and changing the world for Jesus! DAY PLANNER: SEMINARS

DAY TWO SATURDAY 20th AUGUST 2011

9.30am The 75 Year Plan vs. The 5 Year Plan Jon Daniel

How can we stay the course and finish strong? How can we hold on to the vows we made to follow God with all our hearts for the rest of our lives? Jon will be looking at Hebrews 11 to help us see that we can be living to the full to the end of our earthly days. SEMINAR D (16001)

The art of discipleship (Part 1) Jo Saxton

Discipleship is fundamental part of our faith, yet often it’s surrounded by confusion! These sessions will look at how Jesus made disciples, and what that call to discipleship means for our lives today. CAFÉ UNO (16002)

Everything you need to know about starting uni Rich Wilson

How are you preparing for the greatest opportunity of your life so far? How can we follow Jesus in the midst of all the challenges and choices uni life will throw at us? This seminar will give you the insights you need to be ready for anything at university and handle the anxieties and excitement that starting uni brings. LIVE LOUNGE (16003)

Understanding culture, shaping culture Mark Greene

Culture is the stories we tell, the songs we sing, the heroes we admire, the ‘way we do things round here’. This seminar looks at how culture works and offers a Biblical framework and some practical tools for reading the times, understanding the dynamics, shaping how we live and plotting some ways to rejoice in the good but ditch the dross. SEMINAR B (16004)

Finding your way Roger Ellis

Life can be complicated can’t it?! How do we navigate all the options and pressures around career, calling and future, to begin a life journey that has meaning and value right at its centre? SEMINAR A (16005)

Praying for people so stuff happens Jeannie Morgan

This seminar is for all team members and also open to anyone who would like to see God move when they pray for others or would like a bit of an explanation of the basics of how we go about praying for one another. The seminar will also touch on what you might experience or see in the main meetings. SEMINAR C (16006)

There must be some way out of this place! Tom & Suzie Brock

God doesn’t want us to be bound by anything but sometimes we can feel like we’re going round in circles as we try to break patterns of sin in our lives. This seminar will try to help you move towards the freedom God has for you. THE UNION (16007) DAY PLANNER: DAY TWO

2.30Pm Soul Sista: Under the influence Jo Saxton

God has plans and passion-filled desires for the women he created. Yet despite our best intentions, sometimes the stuff of our lives prevents us from responding to God fully. What's holding us back, and how can we deal with it? THE BIG TOP (16010)

Man stuff: Soul Man

Mike Pilavachi & Andy Croft

Exodus: the way out Danielle Strickland

What does oppression look like? What does deliverance look like? People are oppressed externally (slavery, extreme poverty, human trafficking) and internally (depression, suicide, extreme wealth). The Bible offers an amazing picture of the lives of people who were oppressed and then found a way out of their oppression. In our day, you could be the deliverer. Come and hear the sound of freedom! CELLULOID (16008)

What if I knew God’s plan for my life? David Westlake

Imagine there was a big book with nice illustrations that laid out exactly what God's plan for your life was. We all want to know what God has in store for us, but sometimes we're so desperate to find out what's next we ignore the present. So what if God could use you, where you are now? What if he didn't need to wait 'til you had that degree, got that job or dealt with all your issues? SOUL ACTION CAFÉ (16009) DAY PLANNER: DAY TWO

As men we struggle with all sorts of things, this is an honest look at some of them. It will cover sex, singleness and marriage. We’ll look at how to live for God in a competitive, alpha male world. We’ll reflect on the impact our dads might have had on us (good or bad) when growing up and how we can make sure our twenties and thirties are defined by our Heavenly Father. SEMINAR C (16011)

Archetypal discipleship: a new lens on discipleship Maggie Ellis

The Bible challenges us to live lives that are open to exhortation, rebuke, encouragement, sources of wisdom and authority. This seminar will urge us to find ways to stay connected to the ancient wisdom of not living life as an island. We'll identify the archetypal sources of input that we all need as human beings if we are to flourish and fulfill our God-given potential for effective and holistic growth. THE UNION (16012)

Meet the family

Eddie Lyle & Open Doors

Jesus gave us a fresh definition of family: he said that family is bigger than biology. Open Doors invites you to come and meet your persecuted family and find out how you can help them. SEMINAR A (16013)

A vision for workplace ministry Mark Greene

What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus at work? This seminar will explore why work matters in God’s purposes and how our engagement in the workplace can embrace our tasks, relationships and the culture and values of the organisation itself so that work can be seen as the context for ministry, mission, worship and the exercise of spiritual gifts. CAFÉ UNO (16014)

4Pm Hmmmmm Andy Croft

If God doesn’t blow our minds wide open he probably won’t blow open our lives. This seminar looks at some of the amazing truths about God. How can it be he was never created? What does it mean that he’s outside time? What are his plans for the world? What is God actually like? Prepare to have your mind stretched and your heart inspired. CELLULOID (16018)

Big issues (part 1): heaven and hell Chris Lane

2.30PM CONTINUED...

Dangerous stories of grace and action

Patrick Regan

A story is dangerous when it has the power to change lives, futures and even eternities and the Bible is packed with those kinds of stories. These Holy Spirit-inspired accounts have the power to stir God’s people into action and could change the course of human history. Come hear how God calls us to write new stories with our own lives, stories that will get told and retold, impacting those around us for the Kingdom. LIVE LOUNGE (16016)

Facing our losses Jeannie Morgan

None of us are immune to loss whether that’s through the death of a loved one, suffering some type of abuse, the fall out from our parent’s divorce, failing our exams, the end of a long term relationship or plans we make not coming to pass. The pain can leave gapping holes so this seminar will help us look at how we can receive healing and rebuild our lives. SEMINAR B (16017)

Hot on the heels of the debate raised by Rob Bell’s latest book, a fresh look at the topic of heaven and hell. Check out what the Bible does or doesn’t say about this controversial subject. SEMINAR A (16019)

THE Millennial generation Frog & Amy Orr-Ewing

Those of us who are now in our teens, twenties and early thirties are being called Gen Y or ‘the Millennials’. It’s a group massively under represented in church – both numerically and in leadership. In this seminar we will be exploring how to understand the make-up of millennials and we will be thinking about creative ways to reach and release this generation to fulfill God’s purposes for them and the wider church. SEMINAR C (16020)

Missional communities (PART 1): Jo Saxton

At a time when it seems like the church is in exile in the West, churches are discovering fresh and innovative ways to be and do church. Missional Communities are one such expression of church which God is using to reach out to people who wouldn't be found in church on a Sunday. Is it just the latest fad, or is God restoring something to his church that we can all get to be a part of? This first seminar will look at Missional Communities from a Biblical and Cultural perspective. LIVE LOUNGE (16021)

Don’t just stand there – stop the traffick Danielle Strickland

Come along to hear about a movement that mobilises people around the world to do something about the fastest growing crime on the planet. The time has come for God’s people not just to be aware but to stand up and fight. This session will share stories of everyday ordinary people who together did extraordinary things. Come if you’re prepared to sink your teeth into nitty, gritty, grassroots justice and do something. SEMINAR D (16022) DAY PLANNER: DAY TWO

Up In Out

SUNDAY 21st AUGUST 2011

9.30am Politically correct or persecutED? Elaine Storkey

Are Christians finding it more difficult to live out their faith openly in the public space? When some foster parents are rejected because they express views which are not in keeping with the secular majority, and Christians face tribunals for offering to pray with people, or wear a cross, how do we read what is happening and how should we respond? SEMINAR A (16025)

Mini-Alpha 1: Why did Jesus die? Student Alpha Team

Christians say that Jesus died for us, but why and what has it got to do with us, 2000 years after the event? Come and look at the heart of the Christian faith, explore the problem, hear the solution and see the results it offers! CAFÉ UNO (16026)

Leadership & character Ness Wilson

It is said that what takes years to build with our gifts can take moments to destroy with our character. So how do leaders form a godly character that will withstand the pressures of leadership responsibility? LIVE LOUNGE (16027)

Help, I hate that person! Roger & Maggie Ellis

Life is about relationships with friends, at home, in church and the workplace. How can we learn to work and live with different people? Why is it that we each find some people easier than others and at times we are stuck, finding it hard to find the best way to love others? This seminar is ‘personality types with a difference’ and guarantees to get you thinking. SEMINAR B (16028)

The art of discipleship (Part 2) Jo Saxton

Discipleship is a fundamental part of our faith, yet often surrounded by confusion! These seminars will look at how Jesus made disciples, and what that call to discipleship means for our lives today. SEMINAR C (16029)

Fresh expressions (Part 1) Bishop Graham Cray

What sort of churches or new congregations can we plant to reach young adults and others who have no connection to church? How can we plant disciple-making churches in a consumer culture? The first session in this series will look at the first steps of planting new churches. SEMINAR D (16030) DAY PLANNER: DAY THREE

2.30Pm Healing from the inside out Jeannie Morgan

A Biblical approach to politics Patrick Regan

How do we put social justice back at the heart of politics? What is the most effective way of engaging with that world? This seminar will explore how we can start to deal with some of the root causes and brokenness that prompts crime and breakdown. Do you have to be an international speaker for your life to have meaning and purpose? Do you know what your place is in the kingdom of God and how many things he has for you? Come along to find your place and your purpose. THE UNION (16032)

What if there were no more slaves? David Westlake

27 million slaves exist in the world today. Real people, sold as slaves and the trade in people is increasingly profittable. Paul say 'all are free in Christ' so what does God say about the modern-day trafficking of people and how can we use our freedom to help free others? SOUL ACTION CAFÉ (16033) DAY PLANNER: DAY THREE

Some of us feel like we have strived to receive healing and cannot understand why it hasn’t taken place. During this seminar we will look at blocks to inner healing and there will be opportunities to make different choices to those we have made in the past. Areas covered will include anger, fear, vows and irrational beliefs. Prayer ministry will be available. SEMINAR B (16034)

Are you sitting too comfortably? (Part 1) Eddie Lyle & Open Doors

It's all too easy to sell out to our culture's values. Open Doors help us take a look at what it means to really follow Jesus. He doesn't call us to convenience, comfort or security, but to a life of obedience and adventure. SEMINAR A (16035)

Rebuilding life with boundaries Maggie Ellis

We live in a culture that errs to domination. Christian teaching and human rights assert that every individual has boundaries that should not be violated. The reality is many of us have had experiences that push us beyond the boundaries into a place of ‘victimhood’ be that in our work-life balance, be that due to sexual abuse or harassment, relationships or situations that have caused us to lose a sense of self, bullying or simply from our own incapacity to say the ‘no’ word. This seminar will look at how we can rebuild healthy boundaries when they have been eroded and what we need to address in ourselves to shift the dynamics of our lives. THE UNION (16036)

Getting Christian values to work Mark Greene

It’s one thing to seek to work well in the power of the Spirit and to minister to others but how can we help make our workplaces better places to do good work – however junior or senior we might be? Drawing on biblical frameworks and the findings of contemporary business research, this practical seminar offers a biblical framework for organisational influence and looks at how we can begin to have an impact on values, systems and practices in our workplace. CAFÉ UNO (16037)

Women and men: called to lead (Part 1) Bishop Graham Cray

Soul Survivor believes that all leadership roles in the church are equally open to women and men as leadership depends upon the call and gifts of God not upon gender. This first session will look at God’s intention in creation, the consequences of the Fall, and then follow the Biblical story through to the teaching and practice of Jesus. LIVE LOUNGE (16038)

Soul Man: The Purpose of Man Mike Pilavachi & Andy Croft

Often we start out as teenage blokes thinking we are going to change the world but by the time we hit our twenties it can feel like the world has changed us. A look at some of the biblical principles of what it is to be a man of God. It’s a reminder of what God calls us to be about, how we can do it together and how we really can live a life that will make a difference. SEMINAR C (16039)

Passionate discipleship: spiritual growth in a busy world Freddie Pimm

Big issues (PART 2): suffering and the goodness of God Chris Lane

Where is God when life goes wrong? How can a good God allow such terrible suffering in the world? This seminar will not be an abstract theological discussion but will be thoroughly practical, looking at real life stories and how good theology works when life goes wrong. SEMINAR A (16043)

Relationships (part 1): born this way: are you going Gaga or yearning for more? Annie Kirke, Jonny & Esther Grant

What’s going on with relationships? Although our culture seems obsessed with romantic attachments, we have a real problem with getting into and sustaining long-term, faithful relationships. In these three seminars we will explore how we got here, what it all means and how we can respond as Christians. CAFÉ UNO (16044)

Women and men: called to lead (part 2) Bishop Graham Cray

There are some tricky New Testament passages that seem to suggest men should rule over women and women shouldn’t be leaders, but what do they really mean? And what was the practice of the New Testament church? Bishop Graham takes a look at this crucial and sometimes controversial subject. LIVE LOUNGE (16045)

Tough texts of the Bible Frog & Amy Orr-Ewing

DAY FOUR MONDAY 22nd AUGUST 2011

9.30am Ads R US? Ashamed of your mobile? Mark Greene

Much of contemporary advertising doesn’t just tell us what to buy it tells us who we are, who we could be or who we ought to be. It doesn’t just sell products, it sells identity, self-esteem and confidence. This seminar will offer a biblical critique and outline to the psychological model that underpins advertising practices and the ideologies that drive mainstream output, while suggesting practical antidotes to its often corrosive influence. SEMINAR B (16052)

Lead like a woman Media output Elaine Storkey

Christianity is getting more airtime on television, including on programmes like 4ThoughtTV, and is present on Youtube and on social networks. But what kind of Christianity is it? Is it just relativised with everything else or does it make an authentic contribution? SEMINAR A (16050)

Mini Alpha 2: How can I have faith? Student Alpha Team

If following Jesus is all about faith, then we had better know what it is and how to have it! This session shows that far from being a blind-folded ramble in the dark, faith is something far more clear and certain. See the relevance of faith in Jesus for today and find out how it is gained and maintained. CAFÉ UNO (16051)

Jo Saxton

This session will explore some of the practical aspects of being a female leader in today’s world. How can we not only survive but also thrive? SEMINAR C (16053)

Fresh expressions (Part 2) Bishop Graham Cray

What sort of churches or new congregations can we plant to reach young adults and others who have no connection to church? How can we plant disciple-making churches in a consumer culture? This second seminar of the series looks at how a ‘fresh expression’ can be appropriate for its context, yet recognisably a Christian congregation. SEMINAR D (16054)

Overcoming worry: real solutions to a persistent problem Will van der Hart

We know worry is an issue but solutions seem hard to find. In this easily accessible and psychologically-grounded seminar we will learn three simple but deeply effective tools to overcome the problem of worry and live with greater freedom and peace. CELLULOID (16055)

This seminar will give us a new confidence not only to understand what the Christian message is for ourselves but how we can communicate it to other people. CELLULOID (16059)

Are you sitting too comfortably? Part 2 Eddie Lyle & Open Doors

Today, millions of believers face a life of danger, discomfort and even death for their faith. Open Doors invites you to take a deeper look at what it means to follow Jesus through the lens of the persecuted church, and find out what we can learn from them. SEMINAR A (16060)

GETTING COLLARED Who cares how many camels they had? Tom & Suzie Brock

You might know you’re supposed to read your Bible. But if you want to know why the Bible is essential reading material for any follower of Jesus and are looking for tips on how to read it and how to make sense of what you read, come along to learn how! UNION BAR (16057)

What if it wasn’t ALL about me? David Westlake

Facebook, Twitter, reality TV... we're surrounded by the idea that life is all about us and our personal quest for fulfilment, and significance. This can affect our faith. Jesus died for my sins, for my freedom, for my dreams. But do we limit Jesus' death and ressurrection thinking like this? Yes, he offers us salvation, but what if the cross has something also to say about poverty, ecology, politics and the whole spectrum of human experience? SOUL ACTION CAFÉ (16058) DAY PLANNER: DAY FOUR

Sean Doherty

If you’ve ever imagined yourself leading a church at some point in the future and think that might be within the Church of England, this seminar is for you. It will explain what ordination is, how you can tell whether you’re called and what the process is for selection and training. CAFÉ UNO (16061)

Lessons I'm learning about FOLLOWING Jesus Andy Croft

Following Jesus is a journey and he always teaches us things on the way. Andy has learnt a lot in the past year (like how to bench-press more than Mike and how to complete Angry Birds) but here he shares honestly some of the things God is teaching him. It’s about his mistakes, stuff he’s discovering and how to walk effectively with the God we love. THE Union (16062)

The Word became flesh & moved into the neighbourhood Roy Crowne

Jesus walked the earth to reveal the Father; how can we show God’s character to those around us? What are the stories and metaphors that will help us share our faith and what keys does God give us? Seminar C (16063)

Who am I?

Jeannie Morgan

Some of us don’t like ourselves, let alone love ourselves. We have low self-worth and self-esteem and lack confidence because we have never been affirmed. Relationships (part 2): dating, waiting and mating Annie Kirke, Jonny & Esther Grant

Transitions Roger Ellis

Life is about transitions. We may go from school to university, from uni to the workplace, we may get married and experience bereavements. We'll be exploring a Christian vision for relationships and dealing with some of the burning questions as we go. Café Uno (16069)

Leadership

Mike Pilavachi

What does it mean to be a leader in the church? Mike will be talking about how we can grow in the necessary character, confidence and skills to lead God’s people. LIVE LOUNGE (16070)

Missional communities (part 2) Jo Saxton

At a time when it seems like the church is in exile in the West, churches are discovering fresh and innovative ways to be and do church. Missional Communities are one such expression that are reaching out to people who wouldn't be found in church on a Sunday. This second seminar will look at stories from people who have led missional communities and offer ideas if you're thinking of starting your own. SEMINAR C (16071)

LIVING AND LEARNING Mark Bailey

All of us know people who have been Christians for 25 years, but don't have 25 years experience but the same year lived 25 times! This seminar will explore how we can listen to our lives and what the Lord is teaching us through them as we are prepared for leadership. SEMINAR D (16072)

Fixing foundations Will van der Hart

Despite the best will in the world many of us find that the pain of the past dictates some of the actions of our present. Jesus wants us to be free, not just from sin, but also from the consequences of sin and so we'll look at how fixing the foundations can enable this. CELLULOID (16073) DAY PLANNER: DAY FOUR

DAY FOUR: MONDAY 22nd AUGUST 2011

Communication: making good connections with your partner Roger & Maggie Ellis

How do we cross the gulfs of our personality and gender differences into a healthy dynamic of connection? What is your approach to conflict and do you know how to forgive? Roger and Maggie bring over 25yrs of marriage experience as well as their knowledge of psychology and the human condition to help us strengthen our flow of communication in marriage. SPEAKER BIOS Bishop Graham Cray

Alpha Team

The team are Revd Pat Allerton (Curate at HTB & HTB Student Manager); Alice Milner (HTB Student Pastor at HTB) and Mark Nelson (Student Alpha Adviser & Pastoral Assistant at St Albans Fulham, an HTB Church Plant).

Mark Bailey

For the past 17 years Mark has been the Lead Pastor at Trinity Cheltenham, a church that has attempted to live out a missional lifestyle that impacts the local community and beyond. Mark and his wife Karen also head up New Wine Central and South West.

Suzie Brock

Suzie is married to Tom and together they are directors of Wave of Life Ministries. Suzie has been serving in full time ministry for over 30 years having founded and directed initiatives that have sent missionaries to four continents as well as pastoring two congregations.

Tom Brock

Tom leads Wave of Life Ministries with his wife Suzie. Together they travel the world speaking and encouraging people to commit themselves to the Lord and to find their place in the body of Christ.

Graham is the chairman of the Soul Survivor Trust and his day job is Team Leader of ‘Fresh Expressions’ and the Archbishops Missioner. He is married to Jackie and they have two adult daughters. We reckon he’s the coolest Bishop this side of the moon as he has a full month’s worth of music on his iBook!

Andy Croft

Andy works at Soul Survivor where he keeps himself busy training up young leaders through our Soul 61 course and travelling around the country speaking at CU events, churches and conferences. He studied Theology at Cambridge, has an impressive book collection, is married to Beth and likes competing with Mike in the gym.

Beth Croft

Beth is married to Andy and heads up worship at Soul Survivor. She is also Worship Pastor at our church in Watford. She’s a maths geek with a degree to prove it, an eye for an eBay bargain and recently bought a house with Andy in Watford!

Hollin Cross

Hollin graduated from the University of Kent with a history degree and worked for a year before spending the last ten months doing the Soul Survivor SOUL61 course. She is passionate about relevant evangelism and good cheese!

ROY CROWNE

Roy was co-founder of Hope 08, alongside Andy Hawthorne and Mike Pilavachi, and is now the Executive Director of Hope which aims to mobilise the church into mission through words and actions. SPEAKER BIOS

MaRK Greene

Roger Ellis

He is part of the Leadership team of the Pioneer network of churches and is involved in training and mentoring church leaders, helping shape churches and ministries. He’s an author, runs a fishing business and is married to Maggie.

Tom Field

19 year old Tom went home to New Zealand for a wedding last November and then claimed he had visa issues which delayed his return to the UK for 6 months. We think he was just avoiding the British winter and topping up his tan as it sounds like he spent most of his time at home surfing. Either that or he really is Fernando Torres and disappeared to play for Chelsea for the season.

Esther & Jonny Grant

Jonny and Esther currently live in Vancouver, Canada where Jonny is completing his theology degree at Regent College. Previously they were pastors at St Mary's in Bryanstone Square, London, with involvement in relationships and community, which now forms the basis of a book they are writing. They have two children, Ruby and Theo. DAY PLANNER: SPEAKER BIOS

Mark used to work in advertising and is now Executive Director of the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity, where he works as a speaker, writer and consultant specialising in work issues and contemporary culture. His books include Thank God it’s Monday, The Best Idea in the World, and The Great Divide. Mark is married to Katriina and they have three teenagers and a dog!

Tim Hughes

Tim’s an old friend of Soul Survivor having started to lead worship at the conferences as a teenager. He worked for us after he finished uni and now is Director of Worship at Holy Trinity Brompton in London where he also leads Worship Central and the Worship Academy. He’s studying to be a vicar, is married to Rachel, dad to Phoebe, Simeon and Lois and recently released his fourth studio album!

Annie Kirke

Annie is 37 years old and a pioneer priest in the Church of England. She works in the Diocese of London supporting the emergence of missional communities. She is single, lives with her brother, loves photography, running, reading, nature, hanging out with friends, watching the West Wing and drinking good red wine.

He likes reading many books and watching many football matches, whilst looking after many children. Chris is also honoured to be on the board of trustees for Soul Survivor, so that technically means he's our boss!

Jeannie is married to Ken, is part of Soul Survivor Watford Church and travels as part of the Soul Survivor international team teaching about prayer ministry. She’s written two books and is passionate about people finding healing in Jesus.

Frog has a passion for evangelism and speaks and lectures on Christian apologetics both nationally and internationally in a wide variety of settings. He’s married to Amy, they have three young boys, and he loves to paint and draw.

Mike Pilavachi

Mike is a West Wing fan and master chef who spends a lot of time taking the mick out of his mates and competing with them over anything and everything. Sadly he hasn’t found a way to make a living out of any of that, so following on from his previous careers as an accountant and youth worker he now heads up everything at Soul Survivor and pastors its associated church (Soul Survivor Watford), speaks at events around the world, writes the odd book and tries to keep up with his five Facebook accounts.

Freddie Pimm

Freddie is a fourth year medical student at Imperial College in London. He is passionate about playing rugby, surfing and learning to live the gospel. Patrick lives with his wife and three children in south-east London.

Jamie Rodwell

17 year old Jamie FINALLY got a haircut in February which made Mike happy but sadly it seemed his long hair was the source of his musical intuition so he’s had to learn how to play the guitar all over again. This year he’s also been kept busy studying for his AS Levels, helping out with worship at Soul Survivor Watford, and playing sport.

Jo Saxton

Jo lives in sunny Southern California with her pastor hubby Chris and their two gorgeous children. She is a director of 3DM a movement/ organisation that equips churches to put discipleship and mission at the heart of all they do. A speaker and a writer, Jo’s the author of Real God, Real Life, and Influential. In her spare time (!?) she grabs a coffee, heads to the beach and wonders at God’s amazing greatness and kindness.

Laurence Singlehurst

Following on from his post as National Director of Youth with a Mission, Laurence is currently Director of Cell UK, which allows him to engage his passion for equipping churches to reach their communities, with an emphasis on network evangelism empowered by cell church values. He is also the author of a number of books. DAY PLANNER: SPEAKER BIOS

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR BEEN READING THROUGH THE BIBLE WITH US THIS LAST YEAR?

Last summer we set about reading the whole of the Bible together over 12 months. We’re nearly at the end of the readings so supreme respect to everyone who is still with it!

we’re still really passionate about getting into God’s word

Over 13,000 people logged on at the start and though we know not everyone has kept up to date, we’ve been hugely encouraged by how many of you have enjoyed it! We heard some brilliant stories of groups reading together and supporting each other; people reading with their families, and others getting their nonchurched friends interested. We even had one group in Germany translating our blogs for each other every morning (we’re not very good at German)!

Despite being pleased with ourselves for getting through a whole year, we’re still really passionate about getting into God’s word; it’s an amazing way to understand how he wants us to be living. So, we’re going to do the whole thing again starting on September 1st, posting videos or blogs that help tease out some of the key stuff in the readings. Get yourself logged on and you’ll have the chance to discuss passages and share your thoughts too!

It’s all at soulsurvivor.com/uk/bible

Some of the content on the blog will be the same as this year and some will be new. The cover of the Bible has been refreshed but the readings will be in the same order as last year!

STUDENTS plenty of cups of tea AND some nights out at clubs you’d never normally go to...

Roll out of bed, fall into the lecture theatre, panic about a deadline, blag your way through a seminar, then hit the student bar for the evening? Sound familiar? What if we added a healthy dose of guiltfree daytime TV, plenty of cups of tea, some nights out at clubs you’d never normally go to and beans on toast every evening for a week? Studentdom is ace. We love it, and if you’re fortunate enough to be able to spend a few years in higher education (named as such because university campuses are always located on hills) then we’d love you to come along to a special reception we’re hosting on site. You’ll get to meet other students, chat about the issues you are facing (like debt, looming career etc) and find out about a few different things that might help you get through the uni years with your faith in tact. You’re also very welcome if you aren’t yet at university, but are planning to start you journey in September/October.

ARTICLES: STUDENTS

Now don’t panic, it’s at a sensible time, so you won’t need to get up early, and the local pubs won’t be open for an hour or two, so it’s worth the effort. Go on, we may even provide some biscuits.

TIMES Day Three: 4pm

LOCATION Soul Action Cafe, Map Ref: D4

New! This year we’ve also got a special session for anyone who works with students. If that’s you, pop along to Café Uno on Day 3 at 1pm to say hi to Rich Wilson from Fusion and lots of others.

THE OFFERING FIND OUT WHERE YOUR GENEROUS GIFTS WILL GO THIS YEAR...

Each year during one of our main sessions we take an offering. This year the money raised from your generosity will go to help the following stuff:

Soul Action

The Persecuted Church

Soul Action is our partnership with Tearfund. Hopefully you would have heard about the ‘What If?’ campaign we’re running for Momentum this year, and in addition to that, Soul Action supports some incredible projects around the world.

We have some very good friends across the world involved in churches in countries where Christianity is being increasingly marginalized. We know of churches that face intimidation, violence and worse, simply because they meet to worship Jesus. We want to continue to support those communities and help them to keep going as the church begins to move underground.

Some are long term relationships with friends in places like South Africa and Ghana, whereas others are new, like those looking to end trafficking and prevent slavery in Cambodia and Peru. All have a focus on seeing God’s love, hope and life in some of the poorest places in our world. See more at www.soulaction.org or have a read on p70. ARTICLES: THE OFFERING

Raising up young leaders We’re pretty passionate about investing in the leaders of tomorrow in order to see the church growing and thriving in the future. Over the years we’ve had the privilege of working with people like Matt Redman, Tim Hughes, Martyn Layzell, Lex Buckley and Vicky Beeching and we’d love to invest in many more of tomorrow’s pastors, church planters, worship leaders and speakers. If you miss the main meeting where the collection is held, you can pop your donation into the Information and Helpdesk tent at any point during the week. We really appreciate your generosity in getting behind these causes.

We’re pretty sure you get that already and so we’re not going to bang you over the head with a big green onion, filled with messages condemning your use of anything requiring a plug. We’re not like that. But we are serious about the impact our events have on the world and so we hope you bring your good green habits from home with you!

There are loads of bins around site that will recycle glass, plastics, cans and cardboard. In your camping villages you’ll also find green bags at the waste pens. Please make the effort to use them, it would make us really, really happy. Where you can please try and use re-useable items like plastic plates instead of throw-away ones. We’re selling Soul Survivor re-useable water bottles for £2.50 so you can refill and save a tonne of plastic!

All of the tea, coffee and sugar served in the cafes bear the fair trade mark and the Soul Survivor hoodies are sourced ethically too, ensuring people involved in making these products received a decent wage.

PRAYER MINISTRY One of the things we’re really passionate about at Soul Survivor is meeting with God. During the main meetings and celebrations we will always try to let God lead what’s going on by his Spirit.

As part of this the leaders of the meeting will make time for us to wait on God’s Spirit and pray for particular groups of people they believe God wants to ‘minister’ to. It’s a chance for God to work in our lives, so try to be as open to him as possible. Don’t worry if you’ve never had prayer offered in this way, or if you’re not sure how to pray. Mike P and the team will talk you through what’s going on as it happens. We also have an experienced ‘Enabling Team’ who will be around to give you a guiding hand, plus there’s a whole bunch of seminars on the Holy Spirit and praying for others too, so get along to one of them. There is no ‘right way’ to pray for each other. However, we’ve included these guidelines as they are tried and tested and tend to work quite well! While you’re with us please stick to the advice given.

So, what happens? Ministry times usually begin with an invitation from someone on the main stage for people to respond to the Holy Spirit. In praying for people, the most important thing to remember is that this is God’s work, not ours. We are there to encourage those seeking God and to bless what the Holy Spirit is doing in people. ARTICLES: PRAYER MINISTRY

Momentum 2011 Programme

A guide to praying for others… God can use any of us to help people meet with him as when it comes to the Holy Spirit, we all get to play! Below is some common sense stuff to help you allow God to have his way when you're praying for others.

GENDER:

Mouth:

Only pray for someone who shares your gender. Prayer ministry can bring up all sorts of stuff and so it’s a tried and tested principle to always have at least one person with you who shares the same physical bits as the person you’re praying for. Even if you’re married we’d ask you to bear this in mind to avoid any confusion for others around you.

Don’t be afraid to ask someone what they would like you to pray for and what God is doing – even if the Holy Spirit is moving powerfully on them (in Luke 18v40 Jesus asks the blind man ‘What do you want me to do for you?’). However, be aware of not turning this into a long conversation, this is a time for the Holy Spirit to offer counselling, not you! If appropriate speak into the situation or condition in Jesus’ name, be sensitive and recognise that you may be wrong. If you have a prophetic word or picture, offer these as a prayer or in such a way that the person being prayed for can make their own decision as to how appropriate they are. Never insist that what you have to say is a word from God but seek to build up, comfort and encourage the person you’re praying for (1 Corinthians 14v3).

Hands: Encourage the person to receive from God and be still, rather than pray for themselves. Some people may show this attitude by opening their hands in front of them. You can also lay your hands on them (if they are comfortable with that). This can be helpful for the person being prayed for and it’s Biblical, especially with regards to healing (in Mark 1 v40-45 Jesus heals a man of leprosy, as a blessing Matthew 19v13-15 Jesus blesses the children). Be sensitive about where you place your hands.

Eyes: Keep your eyes open when you pray for someone. This means you are more aware of what God is doing and how the person is responding. It also means you can be prepared if they look like they may fall over in the power of the Spirit. If this does happen then please make sure they are in a comfortable position, not draped over anyone else and that their dignity is maintained (i.e. nothing is on show that shouldn’t be). It is not always necessary to stay with the person you have prayed with but encourage them to go on receiving from God. Keep a watchful eye on them and continue to check that they are safe for as long as you think is needed. ARTICLES: PRAYER MINISTRY

PRAYER MINISTRY GUIDELINES CONTINUED.

Ears:

Space:

Listen carefully both to the person you are praying with, and to God. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and encouragement, be prepared to wait, this is God’s work, not yours. The person you are praying for may tell you about things that have happened in their life. Don’t appear to be shocked by any disclosures. Remember that confidentiality is of the utmost importance but DO NOT promise to keep anything secret (especially with regards to claims of abuse). Your first contact in such a situation should be a member of the Enabling Team. They are there to support you and the person you are praying with and will be able to take things further if necessary.

It’s brilliant to have more than one person praying for someone at a time so feel free to go over and join someone who’s praying already. That said, it’s can be distracting if a large group gather around someone when the ministry is of a sensitive nature so please ensure people have enough personal space and aren’t over-crowded.

The whole body: Allowing the expression of feelings is very important and this might mean people cry, shake or respond in other ways to what God is doing. This is totally cool, but be careful not to suppress or to build up the situation. Alternatively some people might not seem to respond physically at all. That’s fine too. We want God to do what he needs to do, we don’t want to get in the way of that and we want to make sure people leave a time of ministry feeling loved and valued.

And finally… Not everyone is familiar with ministry and prayer times and some people feel a bit concerned or nervous when they become aware of God working through the Holy Spirit. We need to help people who are receiving, to feel comfortable and safe, and to encourage them to reach out to God. Always be sensitive and respectful, keep in mind how you would like to be prayed for, constantly ask for God’s help no matter how you are praying. Reassure those being prayed for that God has heard sincere prayers and the cries of our hearts and encourage them to expect answers. Speak healing, peace and release in the name of Jesus and remember the place of repentance, forgiveness and being forgiven. Do not make appointments to pray with people outside of the meeting. If extra prayer or counselling is needed then find a member of the Enabling Team and explain the situation. You can also refer people to the ‘Chat Room’ on site where there will be people available to pray with them. It should also be encouraged that individuals should seek help from their home church where ministry can be continued. If at any time you feel out of your depth then ask for help. The Enabling Team will be moving around the venue and wearing bright pink badges. We all find ourselves in situations that we can’t handle alone. This is not failure and it’s often good to pray with others, plus it’s a great way to learn more! All these are tips to help you let God work through you. Remember: don’t worry. The Enabling Team and the person leading the meeting will be giving directions and advice. The important thing is that you are ready to pray for those around you. ARTICLES: Prayer MINISTRY

WHAT IF?

WHAT

THE ALL NEW SOUL ACTION CAMPAIGN DESIGNED JUST FOR MOMENTUM!

In our world there are 27 million slaves. A child is sold every two minutes. And still more than half the world live on less that $2.50 a day.

WHAT IF WE GOT TOGETHER? We love learning from ordinary people who are living as radical followers of Jesus. We also love eating with friends and chatting about how our faith impacts our daily lives, so we thought we’d combine the two! Join us by registering your student group, house group or a few mates and commit to 6 nights of eating and discussing life and faith together. You’ll have access to loads of free resources including videos, discussion points and recipes.

Are you INSPIRED? If you’ve got a bright idea for an ethical business, a campaign, a local community initiative or for an environmentally sustainable product, we want to help you put it into action! We’re offering mentoring, weekends away, networking support and possibly some start up funding so your idea can become a reality!

In 2012 we want to take a group of 40 people out to Cambodia for two weeks to serve people who are at risk of being sold into slavery. We also have teams going to Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, India and Bulgaria, some for up to six months. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved and GO!

What if we could give over 60 vunerable young people the chance to learn a new skill that could offer them a route out of poverty and exploitation? It would only take £16,000, that’s just £4 from everyone who’s at Momentum. Wouldn’t it be amazing to see God could do as we GIVE generously?

So we’ve been doing some thinking…. We know this isn’t the way God wants things to be, so what if he could use us to turn these WHAT IF WE GO? things around? What if…we get together, we give, we go, we pray, and we see our ideas become reality?

WHAT IF OUR IDEAS BECAME A REALITY?

WHAT IF WE GAVE generously?

Find all this and more at www.soulaction.org/whatif or pop along to the Soul Action stand in the ToolShed to chat to our team about ways you can get involved. Soul Action is a partnership between Tearfund and Soul Survivor

BIBLE NOTES So, you’re here! Is your tent up? Got all your food? Or is it burger and chips from here on in? You’re going to have a fantastic time over the next few days, even if you do put on three stone from eating kebabs all day. Day 1 Paul calls for a

But try to set aside some time each day to spend on your own with God, reflecting on what you have heard so far, listening to God, praising him and telling him the things you’re worried about. These six slices of the Bible are designed to help you do this and, rather handily, they explore the same themes you’ll be hearing about over the next few days. As well as what’s here, you’ll be able to access more stuff on your mobile, if you can get on the web. Just head to www.wordlive. org/soulsurvivor and you’ll be able to find some great audio, video and background info for each day. Ready? Well, wipe that burger grease off your fingers and let’s get going.

Is Jesus one of the influences in your life? How much?

radical love

Who do you model yourself on? Whose style do you like? Pause for a moment and think of all the influences on your life. Are they positive? Read Philippians 2:1–18 and underline all the bits you think would be good guidance on how to live. So, what did you underline? Well, I suppose you could have underlined the whole thing, so packed are these 18 verses with good stuff. But what struck me when looking at this was what Paul says about our attitude to others. He uses words like ‘humble’, ‘interested in others’, ‘servant’, ‘sacrifice’ and calls the Philippians to ‘shine like stars in a dark world’. But most of all, he holds Jesus as the example for us all – Jesus was radical in his life. He showed love, mercy, kindness, humility, became like a servant. He was obedient to God to the point that he died on the cross, so that we could be made right with the Father.

How much does your life match Paul’s description? Think about your whole life, not just the times when you’re doing ‘spiritual’ things. If Jesus lived the radical life and followed God’s way to the extreme, what does that mean for you?

Day 2 Abram heads into theunknown

What kind of personality do you have? Do you need to have a plan, to know what you’re doing at every stage, maybe even have lots of lists to help you? Or do you let things happen, ‘cos it’ll all turn out right in the end? Or something in between? Read Genesis 12:1–9 and reflect on what Abram would have known about God’s plans. We don’t know much about Abram before this passage. But what we do know is that his love for God must have been HUGE.Look at what God tells him in verse 1. Abram gets a big ARTICLES: BIBLE NOTES

call, but no details – he knows God’s ultimate destination, but not exactly where that is or how it will happen. Yet Abram packs up and goes into the unknown, armed only with God’s call and his great promises (in verses 2 and 3). What would you have done in Abram’s position? Letting God lead us where he wants us to go is daunting, but it changes the world. How ready would you be to answer God’s radical call if it came now? Is anything holding you back?

Day 3 Daniel stands up and stands out Have you ever attracted attention because of your faith? Was it good attention? Or did you get criticism and insults? How did that make you feel? How did you react? Read Daniel 6 – if you’ve heard this story lots of times before, try to read it as if it’s the first time. Daniel’s life has not been plain sailing at all. He has had to rely on God to get him and his friends out some pretty sticky situations, because their faith has attracted anger and criticism. And here is no different. On a piece of paper (or in the margins), write down what you make of Daniel, Darius and the supervisors. What words would you use to describe them? The jealousy and greed of the supervisors lead them to trick Darius into laying a trap for Daniel and he gets major stick for keeping on with God. But Daniel carries on following God’s radical plan for his life. He doesn’t let anything stand in his way. What would you have done in Daniel’s situation? Do you get negative comments when you’re doing stuff for God? How do you react? Are you discouraged? Do you stop? Or do you keep going? Has God spoken to you through this story? What’s the impact on your life going to be?

Day 4 Peter gets it right, and wrong, and right, and

Day 5 Mary gives all she has

If your life was a graph, with time marked along the bottom and how well you’re doing in your walk with Jesus up the side, what would it look like? Would it be a straight line of increasing holiness? Or more like a roller-coaster?

I was given an iPad the other week by a friend. I know. GIVEN. I was speechless, literally. What’s the best thing someone’s given you? How did it make you feel?

wrong…

Read Matthew 14:22–32. If you were Peter, would you have even got out of the boat? Peter gets it right, and then almost immediately wrong again. It’s easy to say what a doofus he is, but I’m not sure I would’ve even stepped off the boat. Many people identify with Peter, as he’s a two-steps-forward-23-steps-back kind of guy. In Matthew 16, he identifies Jesus as the Chosen One and then goes and does something that leads Jesus to say he’s talking like Satan. He steps out for Jesus, but often gets things wrong. However, he experiences Jesus’ forgiveness and is used greatly by God. He never stops learning, and goes on to change the world! Does a call to radically love and follow Jesus mean we will always get things right? What do you do when you do something wrong? Does it make you hesitant and cautious? How well do you learn from your mistakes? ARTICLES: BIBLE NOTES

Read John 12:1–8 and try to think how many people you could help with an average year’s wages – about £27,000. There are two main players here (apart from Jesus). Mary gives Jesus something that would have cost a year’s wages. Judas wants to sell it and give the money to the poor. On face value, Judas seems to have a point. Think back to all the things you might do with £27,000 – what a radical thing it would be to change so many lives!

BIBLE READING NOTES CONTINED... But Jesus can see ulterior motives: Mary loves Jesus so much that she honours him radically with her most prized possession; Judas doesn’t want to help the poor at all – he wants some of the money for himself. And Mary’s sacrifice enabled Jesus to explain his own, much bigger sacrifice. How would you describe Mary’s sacrifice? Would you have instinctively reacted like Judas? How closely do you hold on to your possessions? If God asked you to give him your prized possession to use in a radical way, what would you do?

Day 6: back home: The early church goes viral So, now you’re back home and Soul Survivor probably seems a lifetime ago. Spend some time now reflecting on what God said to you while you were away. Read Acts 2:43–47 and 4:32–37. What might your church look like if it behaved in the same way? The Roman empire was a money-grabbing place. If you were rich, you gave money and support to people less well off than you, but only in return for other favours (votes in elections, rent-a-mob, that kind of thing). But the church here is being completely counter-cultural. Sharing money with no thought of any reward, happily sharing food. And what’s the effect in 2:47? Their radical life attracts others. Now your church may never be completely like this (and in some ways it’s an unfair comparison). But you can live radically for God where you are now – you and your church can make a difference. • What things from this passage might inspire new ministries for you and your church? • How can you reach out to those in need in your area? • Where will your radical love of Jesus take you? Ask him to help you!

Extra 3 Elijah cuts it up

Extra 6 Romans rock the world

Want more to explore when you get home? Here’s six more radical slices of the Bible to get your head into…

1 Kings 18 Elijah’s confrontation was powerful, cutting, radical, and just what the people needed to hear.

Romans 16 The people in this passage aren’t huge celebrity Christians, but Paul recognises that their ministry is making a huge difference where they are.

Extra 1 Caleb goes undercover Numbers 13 Faith in God (and knowledge of what he’s done so far) meant Caleb was confident that God would come through.

Extra 2 David strikes a blow 1 Samuel 17 Of course you should fight the massive giant, why would God let you down?

Extra 4 Stephen gives it up Acts 6,7 Not all jobs for God are glamorous, but you will get the chance to tell people about Jesus, as Stephen did.

Extra 5 Paul jams in jail Acts 16:16–40 Not even a stretch in jail can stop Paul’s radical life.

THE KNOWLEDGE London cabbies have what's colloquially called 'the Knowledge'. Well, we can't pretend to know the quickest route from Shepherds Bush to Islington High Street at rush hour, but here we've collated the Momentum equivalent. Read up, study hard and you'll have your answers in no time (guvnor). General Information The Soul Survivor/Momentum office still runs during the summer events (albeit from a big tent) and the smiley team can be reached on 0303 333 1333.

emergency number In an emergency, don’t call 999 yourself. This can cause confusion and delay help getting through. Instead, go to Comms (Map Ref: E5), call Comms on 0303 333 1335 or get hold of your nearest Steward/Village Host and ask them to contact Comms quickly on your behalf.

Information AND Helpdesk Tent Location: Map Ref: E2 Inside this wondrous marquee (which is available to hire for weddings and banquets) you’ll find all the help you need from these teams…

1) Delegate helpdesk

2) The Information Team

Times: 8.30am-11.00pm

Times: 9.00am and 5.30pm

Your first port of call when entering the Information Arena!

Specialist info on anything relating to your booking. They are masters at getting you booked in, sorting out day passes, replacing lost wristbands and eating cake.

The helpdesk is manned and womaned by a bunch of people who can answer the most common queries (stuff like information on local facilities, Momentum venues, buying extra programmes etc). If they don’t know how to help (which is very unlikely as they know pretty much everything) they’ll pass you onto one of the following crews...

3) The Comms Team

Times: 24 hours a day For help with accidents, emergencies, reports of broken toilets and any issues that can’t be resolved without a walkietalkie and the phonetic alphabet. IMPORTANT INFO: The Knowledge

ALRIGHT GEEZER. APPLES AND PEARS. READ UP TO MAKE SURE YOUR NOGGIN HAS THE KNOWLEDGE....

Information Points Don’t want to ask for help? Maybe there’s a deep seated ministry issue you need to deal with. Or your question might be quite simple and easily answered by looking at the big old Information boards that are dotted around the showground. They are easily identifiable by the big blue ‘i’ that heralds their locations around ther site.

Wristband replacement You and your wristband are a winning team. Together you can gain entry into any of the venues on site. Without each other you’ll be subject to secret-police-esque questioning from our safetyminded stewards whenever you venture into a venue. If your wristband runs away and doesn’t come back then, not only will you be mourning the loss of a part of your very being, but you’ll also need to spend £40 to get a new one. If you’ve managed to foil your wristbands escape, but it has got damaged or broken in the process, we’ll give you a new one for just one small shiny pound (but it has to be shiny).

Gate times Ta da! The Blue Gate is open daily via the cutting of a ribbon by some minor celebrity from 7am and stays open ‘til 10pm. If you need to get on or off the showground outside of these times, use the Main Gate (or deliveries entrance). IMPORTANT INFO: the knowledge

The people in the NICE fluorescent jackets aren’t throwbacks to the OLD Hacienda days or the summer of love, they are our very professional, very friendly, very voluntary and very, very nice Stewards.

Stewards No, no, no. You’re not at an illegal rave. There hasn’t been one of them in these parts since 1992 (the year before Soul Survivor started). You’re not seeing things. The people in the fluorescent jackets aren’t throwbacks to the Hacienda days or the summer of love, they are our very professional, very friendly, very voluntary and very, very, very nice, Stewards. They are at Momentum to ensure everyone is safe, so you should do what they ask… they have your health and well being in mind. To show you care, why not say thanks for their service by shaking their hand and wishing them a merry day.

MORE ESENTIAL BITS OF MOMENTUM INFO FOR YOUR MEMORY BANKS...

Village Hosts Your village (that’s the bit of the camp site that you’ve chosen to pitch your tent on) is overseen by a Village Host. Your host, although weirdly sounding like something from Aliens or a foreign exchange school trip, is a lovely person dedicated to helping you with any camping quandary or Momentum mess that you find yourself in. Even if they can’t answer your question, they’ll be able to placate you with a nice cup of tea or hot chocolate, which you may find, upon drinking, solves all your problems anyway (if you can remember what they were in the first place).

Momentum RADIO Tune your radio into the sounds of the Big Top! We’ll be broadcasting across the site on 87.9 FM or under the RDS title ‘Survivor’. All the main stage talks will be aired live, so if you can’t make the Big Top, you can still check out what is happening!

Facilities for hearing impaired delegates All main meetings have a loop system facility – please see the Stewards in each venue for exact locations. Main meetings will be signed so please use the designated seating area in the Big Top.

Post services The onsite post box has collections every day and the mini-market also offers a couple of Post Office services. If you need to receive some post while you’re here make sure the sender addresses it as below: Your name and delegate ref number c/o Momentum Information Royal Bath & West Showground Shepton Mallet, Somerset BA4 6QN

Lost property Where does stuff go when it gets lost? It must go somewhere. Down the back of a sofa? In the inner lining of your old jacket? In the stomach of your family dog? If you’ve tried looking in all those places and the lost item still hasn’t surfaced then it could be in our lost property pile (which in previous years has been given special discretionary status by the EU for being so massive). You can find the pile, and hopefully your lost items, at the Helpdesk. We will bring valuable items back to Watford and try to reunite them with owners for up to a month after the event, however, we can’t guarantee that the friendship bracelet made by that boyfriend/girlfriend you had when you were thirteen and never got over would be classified by the team as ‘valuable’. Sorry. IMPORTANT INFO: THE KNOWLEDGE

HEALTH AND SAFETY INTRODUCING YOU TO OUR VERY SPECIAL FRIEND DEE AND VEE...

Sickness

OK, clipboards at the ready... Please make sure you tick these very simple health and safety boxes for us! First Aid Times: 9am-7pm (On call 24 hours a day) Location: By the Main Gate If you need any medical attention whilst at Momentum then we have a lovely team of First Aiders on hand 24 hours a day. The medical centre is open from 9am to 7pm. For any emergencies outside of these times please go to Comms and they will find a medically trained person for you to get help from. If you have an ongoing medical condition that may cause you problems during Momentum it would be really helpful if you could pop in and let the First Aid team know when you arrive… they’d be happy to store any medication you have and need to keep cool in their special fridge, between the dairy products and chutneys. IMPORTANT INFO: HEALTH & SAFETY

Illness, like diarrhoea and vomiting (Dee and Vee as we affectionately call her) can spread like a wildfire on a packed campsite, so do what you can to help stop the spread of infection by washing your hands regularly and letting us know if any of the loos or showers are broken or dirty (just pop into Comms and tell them what you found in graphic detail).

Fire regulations London’s burning, London’s burning, fire, fire, fire, fire, pour on water, pour on water… Better yet, be a little savvy and prevent a fire from happening by pitching your tent at least 3 metres away from other tents. If only someone had mentioned that to the inhabitants of 16th century London. You’ll also do very well in the ‘I didn’t burn down my tent competition’ if you don’t try and use a camping stove or BBQ inside your temporary canvas shelter. In fact here’s a winning tip, keep all your cooking supplies away from your tent. It’s safer. Lesson over.

If anyone in your group falls ill with a sudden fever, cough or Dee and Vee then try and keep them in their tent and contact the First Aid team. In an emergency call 0303 333 1335.

Emergency procedure Scribble this on your arm or your best mate's forehead to make sure you know what to do if something bad happens (we really, really hope it doesn’t). 1. Don’t panic! 2. Don’t call 999 yourself. This can cause confusion and delay help getting through. 3. Go to Comms (Map Ref: E5), call Comms on 0303 333 1335 or get hold of your nearest Steward/Village Host and ask them to contact Comms quickly on your behalf.

Hungry?

Although you’re camping it doesn’t mean you have to survive on berries and leaves (unless you want to). There are lots of places to fill your stomach at Momentum including the glorious food vans. Ask them nicely, hand over your pennies and you could be munching on baguettes, chips, Chinese, pizza, jacket spuds, pancakes and other delights (but we wouldn’t recommend them all together). On site shop An oasis in the desert, without the palm trees, cool relaxing pool of water or camels. Still, it’s nice to come across a place where you can gain a few essential supplies and catch up on the back page footie gossip amidst the rural extremities of the Bath and West Showground. It doesn’t look much like a shop, in fact it looks like a shed, but why should we let that stop it from providing us with Jaffa Cakes, Mars bars, fresh milk, crispies and a large array of other goodness? We shouldn’t, so don’t be judgemental and get on down there when the rations are running low. Map Ref: D2

Où est le supermarché? Bonjour. Ah, le supermarché. Bon. The nearest supermarket is Tesco, a 10 minute drive away (where there’s also the nearest cash point). To find it, turn left out of the Main or Blue gate, follow the A37 into the centre of Shepton Mallet and look for the superstore signs. Simples. You can also order your goods online and have them delivered to your tent! Just use the following address: Your Name and Camping Village Royal Bath & West Showground Shepton Mallet Somerset BA4 6QN Road safety on the A371 Please don’t try and walk along the A371, the main road the showground is located on. It’s a very busy road and one of the main lorry routes across Somerset. If you’re desperate to get to the pub or go for a little jolly, try grabbing a lift with a suitable designated driver/friend, rather than walking, that should be safer (depending on the driving abilities of your mate).

Freezer packs Trying to keep your supplies cold in a cool box? You may find you need some extra freezer packs to help maintain the 0-5 degrees Celsius that is recommended for fridges by the Food Standards Agency. Generally it’s an impossible piece of advice when you’re camping, but we’ll do our best to help stop that milk from turning lumpy. You can buy a new frozen freezer pack for just £2 or exchange your warm ones for cold ones for free from Stores at the following times: Daily between 9.am-9.30am and 4.30pm-5.30pm IMPORTANT INFO: FOOD

Out of gas? This isn’t some complex ministry time ask, just a question about whether you need more gas for your camping stove. If so, you can buy new canisters packed full of a combustible and flammable gas from the mysterious Gas Man, who’ll be at the Main Gate with his tremendous gas powered truck at the following times: Day 1: 5pm-6pm Days 2-5: 8.30am-9.30am, 12.30pm2.00pm and 5.00pm-6.00pm Departure Day: 8.30am-9.30am to return deposits

site rules Too cool for school hey? Well, then you’ll end up with no education… and we don’t care what Pink Floyd say, education is important and you’d do very well with it. So, start educating yourself with these very sensible and ‘safe-making’ rules. 1) If anyone at Momentum is under 18 then they are, at all times, the responsibility of the group/youth leader/over 18 they came with. 2) If you want to roller-blade, skateboard or cycle after dark, you must have appropriate lighting (a torch is not appropriate, the sun is). 3) However hot it gets, and tempting it seems, there is to be no swimming in the lake. There’s a big monster in there. Honest. 4) Strictly no drugs or drug paraphernalia on site - except for medical purposes. Anyone found in possession of drugs will be evicted from the site and refused further entry to the event. Furthermore, all drug-related incidents will be dealt with by our Site Management Team and the Police representatives on site. 5) Wristbands must be worn at all times - they are the only way to get into venues. There is a charge of £40 to replace lost wristbands.

6) The use of generators is prohibited. Please talk to Comms if you have a medical or other critical need for a power supply. There will be a charge for provision of an electrical hook up. 7) After arrival, all vehicles must be moved to the designated car parks in order to comply with official Fire and Safety regulations. The only cars allowed on site during Momentum are emergency vehicles or those displaying a valid disabled badge. 8) Smoking is not permitted inside buildings, marquees or individual tents. 9) Outdoor ball games (those not in the Sports Arena) are to be finished by 10:00pm - even if you’re desperate to fight your way back from a 3-0 defeat. 10) No speeding.
