Welcome to Momentum 2012 We love having this time together to worship God, to learn and grow together, and to hang out and enjoy each other’s company. This summer our focus is on intimacy because being close to God is the key to life and everything else comes from there. When we draw close to God and see more of who he is, we realise again why he deserves our whole-hearted devotion. As we spend time in God’s presence we realise how loved we are and that nothing could be greater than being loved by him. This is the place where we let go of the things that have hurt us, we get envisioned and equipped for the things that are ahead of us and we enjoy simply spending time in God’s presence. So we can’t wait for our main meetings where we will explore this theme through our worship, teaching and ministry but we’re also excited about all the other things happening during Momentum too! We’ve got a packed seminar programme so we can go deeper into a whole range of topics, we’ve got plenty of cafes (including the Soulympic café to show highlights of the games) plus the Live Lounge is back, there are sports and films – and (as if that wasn’t enough to keep us all busy!) we’ve also got a special surprise for you which we’ll announce in the main meetings!

Love from Mike event programme 2012

What is Momentum? Some of you have been hanging around with us for many years (which makes us very happy), and some of you are new to the Momentum scene (which also makes us very happy!). If you’re not sure how Momentum began (or have stumbled onto the Showground by mistake and are wondering what you’ve got yourself in to) here’s a very brief history lesson. Momentum was born out of Soul Survivor which was itself born out of New Wine (so we’re something like second cousins twice removed). Soul Survivor started in 1993 because Mike P (the funny – and yes, we mean odd – Greek guy on stage) was passionate about reaching teenagers for Jesus and giving them a place they could grow in their relationship with him). A few years later those teenagers had grown up and were dealing with a whole new set of challenges and joys in their faith as they negotiated university, careers, leadership roles and relationships. So in 2004 Momentum was born with the sole purpose of helping people in their twenties and thirties stay passionate about Jesus and keep him at the centre of their lives.

Did we hit the spot? We’d love to know if Momentum is getting it right in terms of encouraging and equipping you where you are at. When you get home we’ll email you a link to a quick questionnaire and we’d love it if you could fill it in to let us know what we’re getting right and what we could improve for you. We’ll also tweet the link (follow us @MomentumGB) and put it on our Momentum Facebook page too.

Days of the week We had an argument with the days of the week and we’re currently not on speaking terms. Until we make it up, we’ll rename the days we’re here as follows:

Friday 17th August = Day 1 Saturday 18th August = Day 2 Sunday 19th August = Day 3 Monday 20th August = Day 4 Tuesday 21st August = Day 5

Tell us a story… We’d love to hear what God has been doing in your life during Momentum. It doesn’t have to be anything spectacular, anything that brings God glory is good with us! We also love hearing how the things God did in you last year have played out in the last 12 months. You can: 1) Scribble your story on a piece of paper and drop it in the testimonies box on the stage (please let us know if you’d like to keep the story or your name private) 2) Email us during or after Momentum at testimonies@soulsurvivor.com 3) Share it with the world via the Twitterverse – give @MomentumGB or #2012momentum a mention so we get to hear your story

A typical day If you’re new to the whole Momentum scene, this will give you a rough idea of what to expect: 8.30am

Time to put the kettle on or grab a coffee and a pastry in Grounds.

9.30am

The first seminar slot of the day (except on Day 5 when we meet at 10am for Communion instead).

11am

Get yourself down to the Big Top for some main meeting action.

1pm

The whole site goes into overdrive as all the cafes open, sports kicks off and the ToolShed opens its doors for business.

2.30pm & 4pm

Two more seminar slots – check out what’s what using the day planner starting on page 35.

7pm

It’s the big one! We all head down to the Big Top for worship, teaching and ministry – don’t miss it!

9ish

All the nightlife shifts into gear once the main meeting is over so take your pick from: coffee & cake in a café, a drink and some dancing in the Union, a chance to show off your talent in the Live Lounge, a browse around the ToolShed, a cinematic treat in Celluloid, some more worship in Late Night Worship, a spot of contemplative prayer in the Furnace, or an opportunity to hang out with your mates over a portion of chips. Phew! Good job we have five days so you don’t have to do all of that in one night…

Exploring the theology and practice of women in leadership

Saturday 15th June 2013 With Ali Martin, Mike Pilavachi and guest speaker Jane Williams. The Equal event is for women aged 16+

Tickets are ÂŁ5 - Book online at www.soulsurvivor.com/uk

Main meetings Twice a day we all get together in a big ol’ tent for what we imaginatively call ‘main meetings’. This is the highlight of our time together and there Venue are usually three main components Big Top of our meetings:

Times

Day 1: 7pm Days 2-4: 11am and 7pm Day 5: 10am and 7pm

Worship We believe we were created to be in relationship with God and to bring him glory. There are lots of ways we can do this in our everyday lives but one thing the Bible mentions quite a lot is singing praises to God. It’s more than just singing one song after another; we believe worship gives us an opportunity to be intimate with God – to tell him we love him, to thank him for all he’s done, and to be honest before him.

8

event programme 2012

Biblical teaching The Bible is packed full of amazing stories, teachings and wisdom for how we can live lives that will bring God’s kingdom to earth. In our morning meetings this week Mike and Andy will be helping us look at the lessons we can learn from the life of King David.

important info

Ministry We make space in all our meetings to invite the Holy Spirit to increase his presence among us. This is a great chance to be prayed for, or to pray for others (if you’re new to that, check out our Ministry guidelines on Page 66). We want to be sensitive to what God wants to do during these times so we can’t say what we’ll be praying for ahead of time. But often when the Holy Spirit meets with people he empowers them to live for God, releases them from painful emotions, heals them from physical pain, and draw them closer to Jesus. We believe encountering God in this way is literally life-changing so we would encourage you to make the most of opportunities to be prayed for.

T i m e s:

Big Top Café

10am and 6p after the m m (closes ain meeti ng)

Fancy a brew?! We’ve tucked a little café into a corner of the Big Top so you can grab a drink before and after the main meetings. It’s a great chance for some pre/post-match analysis with your mates – and you might even find a cheeky pastry or two to keep your stomach happy. Bon appetit!

Communion

T i m e:

Day 5: 10

am

As our time together draws to a close, we love to celebrate communion together to remember the incredible sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross and to celebrate the new life we have through him. The meeting will start at 10am (so we won’t have any 9.30 seminars) and we’d love to see you there as it’s always a really special time of thanking the Lord for all he has done.

Celluloid Who needs Orange Wednesday when you can have a free cinema every night of the week?! Take your pick from these brilliant flicks…

The Help Based on the amazing book, The Help takes us on a journey through Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s where black maids are expected to raise white children but are not permitted to share the same toilets. Our heroine, Skeeter, sees the outrageous situation for what it is and tackles it head on, offering the maids a chance to tell their side of the story, causing outrage, tears, laughter and more than a little trouble in the process. Day 1, 146 mins

Warhorse Mr Spielberg knows a thing or two about making epic films and he doesn’t disappoint here with this story of friendship and war. Albert is the young man who befriends our war horse Joey before he heads off on his adventures, changing the lives of British cavalry and German soldiers on his journey towards No Man’s Land. Day 2, 146 mins

The Way One of our favourite men in the entire world – Martin Sheen* takes a pilgrimage in the footsteps of his lost son, walking the Camino de Santiago. Though he sets off alone to try and understand his son, he finds himself joined by others on a similar journey, trying to make sense of pain and grief in their lives and find a greater meaning. Soulful, sweet, uplifting, and emotionally honest. *we have to confess we have some difficulty distinguishing him from President Bartlett Day 3, 123 mins

event programme 2012

The Iron Lady Officially this year’s best female performance (according to that know-it-all Mr Oscar), Meryl Streep gives us an insight into the life of Britain’s first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. We see her early days, her fight to rise to power, and her years leading the country, as well as the course of her life since losing power and finding herself with mental health issues. An uncomfortable portrait but a compelling story nonetheless. Day 5, 105 mins

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Featuring some of Britain’s best actors and actresses, this film follows the adventures of a group of retirees as they find themselves staying in a derelict old Indian hotel, instead of the plush surroundings they had hoped for. The real story is in how the inhabitants learn to embrace change, let go of the past, and discover a lust for life, leaving you with a feel-good film full of warmth, laughs and top-notch performances. Day 4, 124 mins

The ToolShed Caution! Inside the ToolShed you will find more information and lovely resources than you may be able to handle… We’ve travelled far and wide, seeking charities and organisations who want to help you in your walk with Jesus and we’ve brought them all together under one (very large) roof. You’ll find exciting Gap Year opportunities, CDs, books, DVDS, and loads of great charities you can get involved with to change the world. So take your time, stop at one of the cafes to refuel regularly and enjoy everything the Shed of Tools has to offer!

What’s the story?

You’re pretty special. Yeah – we said it, and we’re not even blushing. So whilst you’re at Momentum we want to make sure no one tries to give you any hard sell and push you into spending money/signing up to their organisation/change your theological standpoint/selling a kidney. What that means in practice is that we don’t let any organisations

market to you outside of the ToolShed. All the organisations represented in the ToolShed are here to equip and encourage you in your relationship with Jesus. Items that are being sold should either resource you or be raising money for a charitable cause and no one should give you any hard sell. If you think someone is being a tad over-enthusiastic and giving you a hard time, please pop into Information and let us know. If you’re an observant sort you might notice that Mike & Co may sometimes mention a book/CD/ charity in the main meetings. If they Day 1: do it’s because 9pm - 11.30pm it’s genuinely Days 2-5: something they 1pm - 5.30pm and want to talk about – 9.15pm - 11.30pm not because anyone has paid them to say it!

To help you navigate the wonders of the Momentum seminar programme we’ve put each seminar into one of our three streams: Up, In and Out.

UP

Seminar recordings

In this stream we’ll focus on ways we communicate with God and how he communicates with us so we’ll look at things like worship, the Bible, and prayer.

There are so many seminars going on at Momentum it can be hard to pick which ones to go to. (There’s also the outside chance you might oversleep and miss the odd one too…) But never fear! We will record each and every seminar and make them all available for you to download or buy on CD after Momentum. Each seminar is given a little number to identify it (which you’ll find at the end of the seminar description) and that’s the magic number you need to purchase the seminar you’re after.

IN These seminars are on things like developing character, letting go of past pain and developing our gifts.

OUT This stream looks at how we work out our faith in the world around us so things like what evangelism looks like at uni and at work, how we can live lives of justice, and how we can change the world in Jesus’ name.

SEMINAR A (16001) Life And Death Sean Doherty In today’s culture we face literal life and death choices in the areas of abortion, fertility treatment and assisted suicide/euthanasia. It will also offer pastoral guidance for praying and supporting people suffering in these heartbreaking areas. Chaotic Order Danielle Strickland Ministry and Kingdom growth and structure look completely different to the normal way of doing things; growing a church is completely different from building a company or a house. Come and find out the chaotic principles of life with God - how he established his order to bring transformation. (16004) SEMINAR B Help, I Am Not Recovered Yet Maggie Ellis We all suffer in different ways in life and this seminar will look at how we can process traumatic experiences and be free of their damaging hold. It may be that we’re still reeling from relationship blows, have been sexually abused or have been through events that have left us with flashbacks. Whatever the case, Maggie is here to point us towards Jesus and help us find the road to recovery. SEMINAR C (16005) A Man’s Spiritual Journey (Part 1 of 2) Rich Wilson What makes you a man? UNION BAR (16008) Ancient Paths For Modern Dilemmas: Spiritual Rhythms David Westlake At Momentum it’s easy to feel connected to God but for the rest of the year, with so much going on in our lives, it can be hard to maintain a really vibrant spiritual life. For richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, and even for better or worse - to be a Christian is to belong to the bride of Christ. So what is church and why can’t we avoid it, even if we don’t go? CAFÉ UNO (16012) No Ceiling To Hope Patrick Regan When you are bombarded with images and headlines telling you that families are broken, communities are dangerous, poverty and war are ever present and that you are not good enough the way you are, it is very hard to see the possibility of transformation. Patrick encourages us to let go of our own agendas and start to see things from God’s perspective where love can overcome hate, brokenness and violence are restorable and we are accepted as children of God. LIVE LOUNGE (16013) There Must Be Some Way Out Of This Place Tom & Suzie Brock We sometimes find ourselves trapped in a cycle of repeating the same sins over and over again. Come and find out how Jesus sets the pace and God inspires equality and freedom through the Word. SEMINAR B (16030) Care For The Caregivers Maggie Ellis Christians can give a lot of profile to calling people to serve and sacrifice themselves but sometimes don’t give much follow up as to how to care for the caregivers. If you’re giving out a lot to others, come along and have a think about how well you are caring for yourself so you don’t let your tank run dry and end up a cynical ex-Christian in the next decade. SEMINAR C (16031) Transforming Values Laurence Singlehurst Discipleship is on everyone’s agenda; in a post-modern culture we as Christians have to be the real deal and our lives need to validate the words we share. Christian Responses For Modern Problems: Caring For Creation David Westlake The state of the environment is one of the big issues of our time. Christians often lurch between two extremes: acting as environmentalists with Bible verses, or dismissing the issue as a distraction to the gospel message. 2.30pm Soul Sista: The Keys To True Freedom Ness Wilson As women we can sometimes be held back by a lack of self-confidence, self-worth and self-belief; controlled by anxiety, fears, lies, worries, addictions and unforgiveness. Yet scripture says “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free”. Is that a promise for men only, or can women learn to live in the reality of that promise? THE BIG TOP (16036) Standing Up For My Faith Eddie Lyle What does it look like to stand up for our faith against all the odds? How can we be churches that meet to equip people to be scattered for the King? CAFÉ UNO (16038) Hope In Our Own Lives Patrick Regan As well as seeing pain and suffering in the world around us, we all face difficulties in our personal lives which sometimes leave us wondering if we’re in a good position to help others. This seminar will look at the hope and comfort God promises us in these situations and how focusing on this will in turn enable us to help others. SEMINAR B (16040) Surviving Divorce Mark Russell Divorce can be a devastating and painful thing, so how are we supposed to handle it if our parents split up? Tom & Suzie shed some light on why we should read God’s word and how we can make sense of it when it talks about how many camels people owned. SEMINAR D (16042) Mini Alpha #2: How Can I Have Faith? Student Alpha team If following Jesus is all about faith, then we’d better know what it is and how to have it! This session shows that far from being a blind-folded ramble in the dark, faith is something clear and certain. UNION BAR (16052) Jesus’ Lessons For Fighting Injustice: Understanding Global Poverty David Westlake What is poverty? Perhaps more importantly, why is there poverty and what is the solution? It will explain what ordination is, how you can tell whether you’re called and what the process is for selection and training. CAFÉ UNO (16078) How On Earth Does God Work? David Wilkinson Where do God’s acts fit into a world described by scientific laws? David suggests that the new scientific world of quantum theory and chaos opens up new possibilities for understanding miracles. LIVE LOUNGE (16079)

Help! Who Am I? Jeannie Morgan Some of us don’t like ourselves let alone love ourselves. When we have low self-esteem it can affect our relationship with Jesus, our ability to form close relationships with others, and the choices and decisions we make. During this seminar we will look at issues of identity and how we can get healed and affirmed, allowing Jesus to build our image and identity from the inside out. Prayer ministry will be available. SEMINAR B (16080) Developing The Vehicles Of Missional Discipleship (Part 3 of 3) Toby Bassford Some believe we live in a period that will experience the reformation of the church. That means we need a new vision and new values, but also a new way of thinking about the vehicle of the church. What shapes and sizes could the church take? How is it structured? Who leads? How do people gather and how often? These questions and lots more will be explored in the final part of this series on missional discipleship. SEMINAR C (16081) Worship Leader Q&A Soul Survivor worship team with Rend Collective Experiment Got some questions about worship? Whether it’s about what the Bible has to say about worship, why we do things the way we do, or if you’ve got a practical question about how to lead others, come along and ask the team. SEMINAR D (16082) Living And Learning In Leadership Mark Bailey One of the greatest obstacles to growth in leadership is the fact that God is always teaching but we aren’t always listening or learning. This seminar will explore some of the lessons God wants us to learn for leadership and life. SEMINAR E (16083)

Soul 61 I arrived in Watford not really knowing what to expect from Soul61 and looking back now I realise how much it changed me and taught me. From the very outset I found myself being thrust into the centre of church life and out of my comfort zone; whether that was leading a small group on the Alpha course, praying for someone in the town centre or pretending I knew how to work the church coffee machine. It’s terrifying yet liberating to completely rely on God showing up in instances like these, and Soul61 was the perfect environment for me to be stretched and challenged. Soul61 taught me how Jesus’ model of leadership is counter-cultural because it starts with humbly serving and loving others. We were encouraged to develop authentic and genuine relationships with other people, as well as pressing into God and pursuing an intimate relationship with him. I’d recommend Soul61 if you want to take a year out from the busyness of life to run after God’s heart, meet like-minded brothers and

sisters in Christ and gain a valuable insight into what church leadership is really like. It’s enriched my life in so many ways and I’ve made lifelong friendships as a result. As I’ve continued to step into leadership since, I feel equipped and confident in the calling God has for my life. I know that the key is sticking close to Jesus; listening to his still small voice and enjoying his presence.

I’m so excited about the future God has for me, and I can’t wait to play my part in rebuilding the ancient ruins and renewing the ruined cities as it says in Isaiah 61:4.

James was on our leade rship course in 2010 and is now study ing at the University of Manchester. www.soulsurvivor.co m/uk

The offering During the evening main meeting on Day 4 we’ll be taking up an offering to go towards these things: Soul Action At Momentum we’re passionate about engaging with God’s heart for justice and finding ways to help people out of poverty. So in partnership with our friends at Tearfund we formed Soul Action to do just that. You can find out more about Soul Action and how you can get involved on page 69.

Young leaders To see the church continue to grow and thrive we need to keep investing in young leaders. Since Soul Survivor began we’ve had the privilege of working with leaders like Matt Redman, Tim Hughes, Vicky Beeching and Ben Cantelon. We’d love to keep investing in more young people to resource the church with pastors, worship leaders and Church planters.

The persecuted church When you’re openly worshiping God with thousands of others it’s hard to imagine that everyone doesn’t enjoy the same freedom. But all around the world our brothers and sisters in Jesus are persecuted for their faith. We want to stand by our Christian family and do all we can to support them and encourage them and we have strong links with a number of Christians in Central Asia who we work alongside. If you miss the meeting you can pop any donations in to Information during the week. If you would like to give to the work of Momentum please check out the ways you can support us on the following page.

Support Momentum Momentum is part of the Soul Survivor charity and is specifically geared towards you lovely folks who are in your 20s and 30s. As a charity we rely on people who are passionate about our vision and values to enable us to keep doing what we do. If you’d like to support Momentum here are some of the ways you can get involved: Pray with us Our heart is to faithfully follow God and we’d really value your prayers that we would hear his voice and be obedient to whatever he asks us to do. As a team we commit to praying for everyone who comes to our events during the year that their relationship with Jesus might flourish. If you want to pray with us email supporters@ soulsurvivor.com and ask to receive our regular prayer updates.

Serve on team during the Momentum conference Momentum events are run by a really small staff team and a massive team of volunteers. If you would like to be one of these super special volunteers then you can find out about all the different team roles available on our website. Most team members receive a free place at the event and get their meals provided for them.

Tell people about us The more people who come to Momentum events, the more money we can invest in them! So tell your mates about us and encourage them to come along, or point them in the direction of our website so they can check out our resources for themselves.

Show us the money! There are loads of things that we’d love to do to resource and equip you guys in your 20s and 30s but we don’t currently have the funds to make those dreams a reality. If you can give us a one-off donation or set up a Standing Order, we would greatly appreciate your support. Find out more at www.soulsurvivor.com/uk/give or give by texting SOUL11 to 70070 with the amount you would like to give (maximum of £10 per text and three texts per month).

Prayer ministry One of the things we’re really passionate about at Momentum is meeting with God. During the main meetings we will always try to let God lead what’s going on by his Spirit. As part of this the leaders of the meeting will make time for us to wait on God’s Spirit and pray for particular groups of people they believe God wants to ‘minister’ to. This is a great chance for God to work in our lives and it’s brilliant to be as open to him as possible. Don’t worry if you’ve never had prayer offered in this way, or if you’re not sure how to pray. Mike P and the team will talk you through what’s going on as it happens (to the best of their knowledge!). We also have an experienced ‘Enabling Team’ who will be around to give you a guiding hand, plus there’s also a seminar on the Holy Spirit and praying for others too, so get along to that if you can. There is no ‘right way’ to pray for each other. However, we’ve included these guidelines as they are tried and tested and tend to work quite well! While you’re with us please stick to the advice given.

So, what happens? Ministry times usually begin with an invitation from someone on the main stage for people to respond to the Holy Spirit. In praying for people, the most important thing to remember is that this is God’s work, not ours. We are there to encourage those seeking God and to bless what the Holy Spirit is doing in people.

A guide to praying for others… God can use any of us to help people meet with him, but we’ve found that some of this common sense stuff is useful in making sure we don’t get in God’s way when we’re praying for others.

GENDER:

Only pray for someone who shares your gender. Prayer ministry can bring up all sorts of stuff and so it’s a tried and tested principle to always have at least one person with you who shares the same physical bits as the person you’re praying for. Even if you’re married we’d ask you to bear this in mind to avoid any confusion for others around you. Thanks.

Mouth: Don’t be afraid to ask someone

what they would like you to pray for and what God is doing – even if the Holy Spirit is moving powerfully on them (in Luke 18v40 Jesus asks the blind man ‘What do you want me to do for you?’). However, be aware of not turning this into a long conversation, this is a time for the Holy Spirit to offer counselling, not you! If appropriate speak into the situation or condition in Jesus’ name, be sensitive and recognise that you may be wrong. If you have a prophetic word or picture, offer these as a prayer or in such a way that the person being prayed for can make their own decision as to how appropriate they are. Never insist that what you have to say is a word from God but seek to build up, comfort and encourage the person you’re praying for (1 Corinthians 14v3).

Hands: Encourage the person to receive from

God and be still, rather than pray for themselves. Some people may show this attitude by opening their hands in front of them. You can also lay your hands on them (if they are comfortable with that). This can be helpful for the person being prayed for and it’s Biblical, especially with regards to healing (in Mark 1 v40-45 Jesus heals a man of leprosy), and as a blessing (in Matthew 19v13-15 Jesus blesses the children). Be sensitive about where you place your hands.

Eyes:

Keep your eyes open when you pray for someone. This means you are more aware of what God is doing and how the person is responding. It also means you can be prepared if they look like they may fall over in the power of the Spirit. If this does happen then please make sure they are in a comfortable position, not draped over anyone else and that their dignity is maintained (i.e. nothing is on show that shouldn’t be). Stay with them as long as needed and encourage them to go on receiving from God. It is not always necessary to stay with the person you have prayed with but keep a watchful eye on them and continue to check that they are safe.

Ears: Listen carefully both to the person

you are praying with, and to God. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and encouragement, and be prepared to wait; this is God’s work, not yours. The person you are praying for may tell you about things that have happened in their life. Don’t appear to be shocked by any disclosures. Remember that confidentiality is of the utmost importance but DO NOT promise to keep anything secret (especially with regards to claims of abuse). Your first contact in such a situation should be a member of the Enabling Team. They are there to support you and the person you are praying with and will be able to take things further if necessary. continued... event programme 2012

The whole body: Allowing the

expression of feelings is very important and this might mean people cry, shake or respond in other ways to what God is doing. This is totally fine, but be careful not to suppress or to build up the situation. Alternatively some people might not seem to respond physically at all. That’s fine too. We want God to do what he needs to do, we don’t want to get in the way of that and we want to make sure people leave a time of ministry feeling loved and valued.

Space:

It’s brilliant to have more than one person praying for someone at a time so feel free to go over and join someone who’s praying already. That said, it’s can be distracting if a large group gather around someone when the ministry is of a sensitive nature so please ensure people have enough personal space.

And finally… Not everyone is familiar with ministry and prayer times and some people feel a bit concerned or nervous when they become aware of God working through the Holy Spirit. We need to help people who are receiving, to feel comfortable and safe, and to encourage them to reach out to God. Always be sensitive and respectful, keep in mind how you would like to be prayed for, and constantly ask for God’s help. Reassure those being prayed for that God has heard sincere prayers and the cries of our hearts and encourage them to expect answers. Speak healing, peace and release in the name of Jesus and remember the place of repentance, forgiveness and being forgiven. Do not make appointments to pray with people outside of the meeting. If extra prayer or counselling is needed then find a member of the Enabling Team and explain the situation. You can also refer people to the ‘Chat Room’ on site where there will be people available to pray with them. It should also be encouraged that individuals should seek help from their home church where ministry can be continued. If at any time you feel out of your depth then ask for help. The Enabling Team will be moving around the venue and wearing bright pink badges. We all find ourselves in situations that we can’t handle alone. This is not failure and it’s often good to pray with others, plus it’s a great way to learn more! All these are tips to help you let God work through you. Remember: don’t worry. The Enabling team and the person leading the meeting will be giving directions and advice to everyone. The important thing is that you are ready and willing to pray for those around you.

Soul Action – What if? What if… … we changed the rhythms of our life? What if… … those small changes changed the world around us? We’re passionate about obeying God’s desire for us to tackle injustice and we desperately want to make a difference – but how? The needs can sometimes overwhelm us so we don’t know where to start. Enter… Rhythms – an app that helps you take small steps that can change your daily habits, and help change the world in the process. Actions are based around four themes:

Connection – breaking out of our bubbles and connecting with the world around us.

Advocacy – making our voices heard and speaking up on behalf of the poor.

Generosity – learning to live for others and sharing all we have.

Contentment – standing against our consumer culture to find contentment in God and not our possessions.

Just visit the Soul Action stand in the ToolShed to find out more and to download the app or to sign up online. Each action you take helps you grow a virtual tree to see how far you’ve come – you can even get together with your mates to grow a whole forest!

Fast For Freedom

We’d love to take up a challenge together: while you’re here at Momentum why not give up food for a day and give the money you save to Soul Action to help us fight slavery? If you’re up for a real challenge, why not consider giving up something else for a longer period of time? Maybe commit to having just one drink in the pub instead of two over the next few weeks, going for a month without buying clothes or music, or think about giving up something you eat or drink regularly. Save up the money you would have spent and send it to Soul Action so we can work together to fight slavery.

Get it across – loud & clear!

Need a bit of help preparing a talk? Whether you give short talks in a small group setting, or get asked to speak to a whole church or large crowd, Ali Martin has some brilliant advice for you in her new book ‘Get it Across, Loud & Clear’. The purpose of the book is to help anyone who’s interested in communicating God’s word be the best speaker they can be.

Top tips

• C larity – Make sure you are actually saying what you want to say! It might be clear in your head,

where you have spent weeks pondering the subject, but you need to make sure it comes across when you deliver it. The best way to check is to test it on someone. Don’t tell them what your main point is, but at the end ask them what you actually communicated. Make sure the weight of your material is where the weight of your point is.

• Make one point and make it well. Don’t be tempted to cram three sermons into one. Find

one focus and gather all your material (Bible verses, illustrations, application) around that one point. It something doesn’t fit, get rid of it – even if it’s a brilliant stand alone thought!

• Learn to be an engaging communicator. Spend time thinking about your delivery as well as your content because even excellent content will get lost through bad delivery. People need to be interested in what you’re saying and kept engaged for the full length of your talk.

•W hen you get asked to speak you may have a gut feeling about what you should

speak on (if you’re given the choice that is). It’s easy to dismiss this and think you should speak about something else but that first thought is often where the power is because that’s the seed the Holy Spirit has planted in you. Learn to listen to what the Holy Spirit is putting in your heart.

• D ecide to take feedback well, from anyone, even if they are mean! If we want to grow as

communicators we need to be able to be told what our weaknesses are as well as our strengths. We may need help from others to see what annoying habits we have that distract people from hearing God’s truth. Choose to be teachable and accept people’s feedback (you may want to ask a few kind but honest friends particularly to help you in this). Feedback is invaluable to growth.

Bible Notes The Upper Room In John 13 to 17 John tells us of what happened at the Passover meal, just before Jesus is arrested. There, Jesus teaches his disciples for the last time before his death. It’s a wonderful image of Jesus’ love and care for his followers, but also includes some challenging teaching. There is so much in what Jesus says, and we’ve got so little space to explore it here. As you read, listen to what God is saying to you. We’re going to start reading at chapter 14, so before we begin, read chapter 13. This way you can get the full picture of what Jesus says and does. What do the events of chapter 13 tell us about Jesus, and his relationship with his disciples? What about his relationship with us?

Day 1 The Way You may have heard ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’ many times before. But take a moment to think about what it means.

Read

John 14:1–11 Why does Jesus say that famous phrase? You’ll have noticed that Jesus is replying to Thomas’ question about how the disciples can know the way to the Father’s house. Put yourself in Thomas’ place – would you have understood what Jesus was talking about in verses 1 to 4? What are your reflections on Jesus’ reply?

72

event programme 2012

And what about Philip’s question in verse 8? How well do you know Jesus? And how often do you reflect on the fact that ‘Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father’? I’d like to think I’d be more with it than Thomas and Philip, but the reality is that I’d be asking the same questions. I’m too quick to talk and not quick enough to spend time getting to know Jesus. Go back to thinking about ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’. What does that mean to you in terms of your relationship with him? How have you seen the Father through Jesus?

Day 2 The Spirit What does the word ‘intimacy’ mean to you? How does it describe relationships? What impact has thinking about intimacy at Momentum had already on your thoughts?

Read

John 14:12–21 and underline all the places where Jesus talks about the relationship between himself, us, the Father and the Spirit. What did you underline? Certainly there is lots of stuff in here about the complex relationship between us and our triune (three-in-one) God. In verses 17, 20 and 21 Jesus speaks about knowing, living and loving. We’re involved and in relationship with God, and by the Spirit, he lives in us. I wonder if you underlined verses 13 and 14? This is not some kind of magic phrase with which we should finish our prayers, in order to get God to do what we want. A name is meant

How well do you know Jesus? Do you feel like your prayers and desires are the same as his?

Day 3 The Peace Think about your walk with Christ so far – how has it been? Easy? Difficult?

Read

John 14:22–31 and reflect on Jesus’ words as you think about your relationship with him. How does this passage make you feel? Does it tell you anything new about him? Read verse 23 again. Sometimes, it can seem like there is an element of compulsion here. If you’re going to love Jesus, then you have to follow his commands. But it’s not like that. It’s more like cause and effect – it’s because we love Jesus that we desire to follow his commands. The more closely we know and love Jesus, the closer we get drawn into living for him. And what does this close relationship, this intimacy bring? Peace! We sometimes blithely take about peace – depending on your personality, you may love or dread ‘sharing the peace’ at church. But take some time meditating on verse 27. What is God saying to you about this?

Day 4 The Vine Think about a relationship that has faded. Maybe you know people who were once good friends, but now you rarely see. What made that relationship grow dim?

Read

John 15:1–8 Have you heard this ‘I am’ statement before? Think about it for a moment, then read the passage again. Relationships often fade when we don’t see friends as much – they move away, family situations change… and Jesus is saying it’s the same with our relationship with him. If we lose connection, our relationship with him dies, just as a branch dies when it’s cut from a vine. But if we stay connected, then we grow and flourish. How well connected are you to Jesus? Jesus also talks about God pruning the vine (verses 1,2). What do you think that means? Have you ever felt pruned by God? It can be a painful process, but it also brings us further into intimacy with God – our own priorities and goals are cut away, so we can concentrate on what he has in store for us. Do you feel like areas of your life have become overgrown? Have your own desires got you tangled up? Spend some time with God talking about these things – ask him to cut these away. What can you do to stay close and connected to God? Read the Bible more? Get a mentor? Kick start your prayer life?

How do you personally feel about following Jesus’ commands? Does it feel like some kind of compulsion? Or does it come from love? How ‘peaceful’ do you feel?

to reveal something of character (Jesus, after all, means ‘God saves’). And as we get to know Jesus’ character, we get to know his plans and purposes. And so we pray alongside those, not our own.

Day 5 The Love

Day 6 The World

Look back over yesterday’s reading. How many times does Jesus talk about remaining in him and he in us?

So, are you home now? Spend a moment or two reflecting on what you have learnt about yourself, God and your relationship with him. What difference is it going to make?

Read

John 15:9–17 and highlight where Jesus talks about remaining in him and he in us in this passage. All through these chapters, we get a picture of the intimate relationship Jesus is drawing us into: through the life Jesus brings us, through the Spirit, through following Jesus’ commands, through remaining in him, and here through Jesus’ love. What does that say to you? Remaining in Jesus’ love is not an inactive thing though. He doesn’t call us to stay in his love like a comfortable, warm bed. No, he loves us and so we need to love others in the same way. Easy to say, but how hard is that to do? How easy do you find it to love others? Make a list of those people who you find it hard to love. Pray about each of these people – talk to God about the difficulties and ask him for help.

Read

John 15:18–27 What’s your situation ‘in the world’? Do Jesus’ words have some resonance with you? Here, Jesus recognises that things aren’t going to be easy. If people persecuted Jesus, and we follow and are ‘connected’ to him, then we’ll get persecuted too. We may not be in physical danger (not in Britain, anyway), but there will be pressures and flashpoints that will cause us to be at odds with the world. But we’re not alone. The intimacy we have with Jesus means that he is always with us. The Spirit, living in us, comes from the Father and tells the world of who Jesus is. So now you’re back in your home situation, how are you going to tell the world who Jesus is, with the Spirit’s help? Just as at the start of this time, spend a few moments thinking and praying about what you have discovered at Momentum. What impact will it have?

Be Green We’d love to encourage you to be green while you’re with us and not let all your usual resolve to look after the earth dissolve in the face of a tent. This stuff is really important so we’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for you to be good stewards. Recycling. There are recyling bins and bags in each camping village for glass, plastics, cans and cardboard. If you could take the time to use them we – and the environment – would be very happy. Fairtrade. All of the tea, coffee and sugar in our cafes is fairly-traded and we’ve sourced a few other Fairtrade (and some organic) treats too. Drink in peace friend.

Waste not, want not Got any leftovers at the end of the week? If you don’t fancy taking that tin of spam home with you (or any non-perishable, un-opened food), bring it along to the Food Collection point (Seminar A) after 5pm on the last day. We’ll make sure it goes to a good home (by which we mean a local charity) and you’ll have a lighter load – everyone’s a winner!

Wristband replacement Some things are just meant to go together like fish & chips, Ant & Dec, gin & tonic, and now you and your wristband. Yep that’s right, you and your wristband will spend the next few days at very close quarters not even being separated while you shower or sleep. Shocking we know. If you have a falling out and your wristband finds itself in pieces as a result, please bring the bits with you and the team at Information will provide you with a new shiny wristband for £1. If you lose all the pieces you have lost the game and will have to pay a penalty of £40 to replace it. So try and stay friends.

Village Hosts

Stewards Our stewards are an amazing bunch. They give up their time to come and make sure we all stay safe here at Momentum and have a lovely time. You’ll spot our stewards by their attractive yellow jackets and their megawatt smiles (you might need your sunglasses – it’s an overwhelming combo) – they’ll be the ones who check your wristband as you enter a venue, or who will tell you if you’re causing an obstruction by having a picnic on a main road. Please do listen to what they say – they know what they’re talking about and they’re here to keep us all safe and happy. What a nice bunch they are.

When you love your neighbour, it’s tempting to camp as near to them as possible but whilst that may create love, peace and harmony, it can also be a fire hazard. Stay safe and pitch your tents three metres apart. Oh and in case this isn’t stating the obvious; don’t try cooking in your tent; it’s a disaster waiting to happen!

First Aid

Illness like diarrhoea and vomiting (our good old friend Dee & Vee) can spread quickly on a packed campsite, so make sure you wash your hands regularly and let us know if any of the toilets or showers are broken or dirty (just pop into Comms and tell them what you found in graphic detail). If anyone in your group falls ill with a sudden fever, cough or meets Dee & Vee then try and keep them in their tent and contact the First Aid team. In an emergency call 0303 333 1335.

Times: 9am - 7pm (On call 24 hours a day) Location: By the main gate If you need any medical attention whilst at Momentum then we have a lovely team of First Aiders on hand 24 hours a day. The medical centre is open from 9am to 7pm. For any emergencies outside of these times please go to Comms and they will find a medically trained person for you. If you have an ongoing medical condition that may cause you problems during Momentum it would be really helpful if you could pop in and let the First Aid team know when you arrive… they’d be happy to store any medication you have and need to keep cool in their special fridge.

Emergency procedure 1. Don’t panic! 2. Don’t call 999 yourself. This can cause confusion and delay help getting through. 3. Go to Comms, call Comms on 0303 333 1335 or get hold of your nearest Steward/Village Host and allow them to contact Comms on your behalf.
