Hello all..

My name is Barry Ralph. As current Vice President I have been appointed as Caretaker President of the club for the remainder of this financial year. Unfortunately our current President Kieran Cusack has resigned due to escalating work commitments. He has been a hard working President totally committed to his position and the club for the past two and a half years. His organisational skills will be greatly missed by the committee and indeed all other members of the club. His sometimes 24hr a day dedication to a range of areas will be very hard to match. Members who attended events and sat comfortably under our shade structures may not have been aware that Kieran would arrive hours earlier to construct them (sometimes by himself) and usually be the last to leave after dismantling them. He has been instrumental in raising the clubs profile to that of one people want to be part of. On behalf of myself, the committee and all other members I wish you all the luck and success in the future that you thoroughly deserve. Thanks again Kieran. Well, it's that time of the year again and our Christmas party is just around the corner. If you are coming along please send your payment and confirmation by email to Bill as soon as possible, we need the final numbers by the 9th of November. Hope to see you there Cheers Barry

New Members continued...

Frank Tangney - 1970 Mercury Cougar

Ray Tyndall - 1965 Mustang Coupe

Well it’s that time of the year again with Christmas and the holiday season upon us once more. It has been a busy and very successful year for the club with some excellent runs to some interesting places and fun events. Having two club runs a month has been really successful. We are seeing more members than usual so the opportunity to choose a run to attend that better suits must be working. Our membership continues to grow at a steady rate we now have nearly 120 members and I continue to get inquiries on a weekly basis. I have the pleasure of welcoming back to the fold Mark O’Neill, a past President of the club who has recently become the proud owner of a 1962 Hardtop. We’d like to also welcome new members Paul Jepson 65 Hardtop, Grant Smith 59 Hardtop, Phil Rhodes 60 Hardtop, Karen Varaday 67 Hardtop, Frank Tangney 70 Cougar and Ray Tyndall 65 Mustang . We sincerely hope you enjoy being part of our club and hope you can join us on a run sometime soon. We are very excited to be able to issue everyone with club membership cards. You will have found yours inside the front cover. We have Bill and Lyn Flanagan to thank for helping us acquire these cards through their close friend Graeme in Melbourne at a very reasonable rate. I am very happy with how they turned out and it was a pleasure to deal with Graeme during the whole process. The numbers have been issued in alphabetical order. New members from this point on will receive a number next off the rank. Please sign your card on the back in the space provided to validate it. For best results use a fine point permanent felt tip pen. The number on the card has been recorded against your name on our roster system. The card will come in handy if your car is registered on the Special Interest Vehicle Scheme. If you are ever asked to prove your current club membership you can present your card and if need be the club can substantiate that you are financial. Congratulations are in order for our club newlyweds Ziff and Kristy Howard. Ziff and Kristy tied the knot on Saturday 11th October at Kholo Botanic Gardens. The Thunderbirds of Queensland wish you and your beautiful baby girls all the best for a wonderful future. The Christmas Party is fast approaching.. November 30th. We do need final numbers for catering purposes by the 9th of November so please if you haven’t already, do consider joining us at the Norman Park Bowls Club for an afternoon of food and fun with good friends. Please get your completed invitation and payment to Bill as soon as possible. Let’s finish off another very successful year with an equally successful finale. To those members far and wide we won’t see before the new year we wish you and your families a very happy and safe festive season….. Johnny

It’s Saturday night.. It’s cruise night

Another excellent turnout of members and cars to our Saturday night cruise to Sensual Indulgence Café at Cleveland. Great to see Bill and Lyn’s gorgeous midnight aqua 69 Landau on its first club outing after extensive repair work to the chassis. Read all about it in last issues story on Bill’s project. Things didn’t all go to plan that evening for Bill. As he entered the meeting point car park the engine flooded and stalled caused by what he thinks was a stuck carb float needle. A light tap on the old Holley and she was away again.. It was a easy cruise out to Cleveland from our meeting point at Cannon Hill. On arrival we met up with Kevin and Nathan who had dusted off their vintage Nash for the evening. What an amazing old car. Fantastic to see Jim and Robyn Hall on a club run the first for a while. Robyn has been battling with illness for sometime and it was great to see her out with the club again. Robyn and Jim are long time members Robyn devoting many years of that time to the club in the Treasurers role. Nice to have some the newer members along on a run.. Gary Dutton has been to a number of events now but is still waiting for the right car to come along, preferably a 65 that will fulfil his dream of owning a classic Ford Thunderbird. Thanks to Barry for organising the cruise out to Cleveland… Johnny

On the Road to Roadvale

I put my hand up to organise the second club run for August. A countryside cruise around the Scenic Rim was in order and what better a place to end up for lunch but the Royal Hotel at Roadvale. After the apprehension of the weather conditions on the days leading up to the run and in particular the doubts on Saturday as to whether the run should proceed. Some early Sunday morning phone calls on the subject took place but it was soon determined that we would proceed depending on the turn up at the meeting point. Generally looking out west the early morning weather looked favourable. Surprise surprise we had 11 starters including Craig and Karin all the way from Wamuran.

From the start point at Park Ridge the turn up was seven Thunderbirds a Zimmer a Cobra, and Cougar. At the Hotel to greet us were Mick and Dianne in a Tbird named Rhonda and Jason and Elia in their 73 Mustang convertible. Elia and Jason only live a few miles away in Kalbar. The morning turned out exceptionally good which made the run pleasant with the weather improving by the hour which generally pleased all concerned? 9

After a pleasant run which took us down the Mt Lindsay Hwy towards Jimboomba, we veered to the left and toured through Mundoolun and Beaudesert then on towards Boonah, we arrived at Roadvale and the Royal Hotel around 11.30am. Coffee and drinks the order of the moment then lunch was on the go at 12. As usual good chats were had by all and I must mention that Johnny had finally got his Tbird on the road again after some months out of action with a broken exhaust manifold.. Karl and Gina had a minor hassle with a leaking transmission line which was rectified and with a top up of fluid we all departed approximately 3.15pm. On the way back heading towards Ipswich a number of members stopped at an old abandoned service station building to take photos. I’m sure Johnny will have a photo to show.. Thanks to all who attended, making it another great day out…. Doug and Sandra

A Step back in time‌ Caboolture Historic Village

Nestled just north of Caboolture CBD, is the Caboolture historical village, run and maintained by the Caboolture Historic Society. Being run by volunteers adds to its charm, as no commercial profit needs to be made. Hiring of the village for weddings and functions is the main source of income to keep up the maintenance of the village. This is what attracted Mindy and I to get married here 20 months ago. We were allowed to park inside the village around a gazebo and were welcome to take photos with our cars in front of the historical buildings, which a few took advantage of. Fourteen club cars attended including 5 red bullet birds (unheard of eh!)

10 11

It was great to see Mark and Jackie O’Neill after a hiatus of about 8 years. They recently bought a 62’ Thunderbird Landau and have rejoined the club. We also welcomed new members Paul and Cheryl Jepson along on their first run with us. They have a lovely Phoenician yellow 65’ Hardtop.

After exploring parts of the village included the Morgue, Jailhouse, Blacksmith workshop and school house, we had a poet, Ivan Wall entertain us at the Gazebo with a few of his own Australian poems. Doug had met Ivan while walking around the village and it turned out that not only is he very talented at writing and performing his poetry he is also the President of the Australian Light Horse Association. Thanks to all who came along to enjoy this special place… Daz

Available only in 1967, the Thunderbird Apollo was only built in five distinctive models and is considered to be the most unique of all Thunderbirds. These five models were ordered specifically by Abercrombie and Fitch as display vehicles in their stores. The cars were on display in their sporting goods stores in San Francisco, Chicago, Palm Beach, Miami and New York City. The Thunderbird Hardtops were painted a special Apollo Blue Metallic and custom loaded with options, and were delivered to Dearborn Steel Tubing Company. There the vehicles were transformed into Tudor Landaus and loaded with everything one could possibly desire on an automobile in 1967, even a factory power sunroof. These '67 Thunderbird Apollo's were entirely drivable and operational. Starting life as Thunderbird Hardtops with production scheduled for November 4, 1966. All five of the cars were equipped with the standard 390 V-8 engine. The Dearborn Steel Tubing Company was owned by Andy Hotten who specialized in custom variations of production vehicles. Hotten was responsible for customising Lincolns into mini-limousines and turning Mercury Colony Park Station Wagons into Lincoln Continental Station Wagons during the 1970's. In the technical term, Apollos weren't factory show cars, but specially ordered and never appeared in official Ford car shows. In the March 1967 issue of Motor Trend magazine, these exclusive Thunderbirds were mentioned and added interest in the Thunderbirds locally found in dealer showrooms.

13

Today, three of the five Apollo's are thought to still be in existence. One was supposedly destroyed during transit to its San Francisco designation from Detroit. Two are reported to be in excellent condition with very low mileage. Another example was apparently used daily by a faithful driver, and the fifth one is unaccounted for at this present time.

The cost to construct each vehicle was estimated around $15,000. Inside the Apollo were such features as a telephone, Philco TV, fold-down table built into the front seat backs and dual rear reading lamps. There was also a power reclining front passenger seat with power head rest and foot rest, completely fitted with special dark blue leather upholstery.

The 1967 Thunderbird Apollo continues to remain one of the most unusual and rare vehicles ever to bear the Thunderbird name. By Jessica Donaldson. Sourced from www.conceptcarz.com International Thunderbird Club & TOQ Facebook group member, Gene Martini from Lancaster Pennsylvania owns one of the surviving Thunderbird Apollos and it is in pristine condition. It recently won 1st place in Modified Touring Category with 195 out of 200 points at the ITC Convention Concours in Charlotte North Carolina‌. This is Gene’s stunning 1967 Thunderbird Apollo.

Samford Dayboro Touring Run

The TOQ Club run on 12 October 2014 was to Samford and Dayboro from Newmarket.

It

was a clear sunny day and eight club vehicles attended. We met at Harry’s Diner on Newmarket Road. After some minor electrical adjustments on a certain Mustang convertible, we headed down Newmarket Road and managed to stay in reasonable convoy configuration through Enoggera Road and Ferny Grove. The first stop was at the Samford Country Centre, Corner Main Street and Kath Fitzgerald Drive, Samford. There was ample parking as this centre is not open on weekends. Members visited shops and cafes in the area before continuing the journey. It was great to catch up with club member Jim Liddle who met us in Samford with his lovely blue 66 Thunderbird Town Hardtop. Jim is usually unable to attend club events and was pleased to be able to meet up with us in his home area. From Samford we headed north through the countryside to Dayboro and remained in convoy. At Dayboro we parked in the car park behind the shops in a shady grassed area. At first Barry refused to park his silver edition Lincoln with the rest of us, stating security reasons. But some of us think it is more likely that he just wanted an audience! 16

Some brought picnic lunches and some visited various cafes in Dayboro, purchased lunch and returned to the birds nest for lunch. After lunch and some good comradeship we all returned home. Tony Lake

While we were away….. Helen and I have been away in Europe and Britain. We got to a couple of motoring events. One was in Britain, an historic motor racing meet, the 'Silverstone Classic'. One was Sweden’s biggest classic American car show the 'Power Big Meet'. We were also in Russia and a number of the old Soviet block countries and I was interested to see what was left of Soviet-era motoring.

H

istoric motor racing has become popular world-wide. Australia has first-class fields for historic racing and a day at Lakeside is great entertainment. There is a huge scene for historic racing in Britain. It’s the scale of the Silverstone Classic that separates it from most events. It’s a 3 day event with a big program of motor racing and displays during the day and entertainment in the evening. In excess of 1000 vehicles, many worth a lotta, lotta money are entered in a range of classes. These include pre '66 and pre' 61 Grand Prix cars, Touring cars from the 50s to the 90s, etc, nearly every major racing category going. And the day is more than the track racing. There’s a huge array of British and European classic cars in static display. It’s a treat both on and off the track. This year the featured car for the meeting was Ford Mustang in it’s 50th year with a Trophy race and a parade laps.

18

Power Big Meet: Sweden has long been collecting classic American cars and the Power Big Meet in Vasteras, an hour from Stockholm, is known world -wide. Its a three day show with displays, judging, swap and vendor sites all in huge numbers. In the evening it's cruise time. Because it doesn't get dark until 11:00pm in summer in Sweden, cruising is in 'daylight' and the streets are lined with spectators in carnival mode. And they are treated to a show. In Scandinavia, the preference appears to be full-size classic 50s cars ... all makes, models and body styles. Add in the Swedish 1950s 'raggare' sub-culture and the rat-rod appearance of those cars and followers and it adds up to a show that attracts the world. You will find an array of photos on our TOQ Facebook page.

19

For those with an eye for cars old and new, the old Soviet block countries make for interesting car-spotting. The white 4-door sedan (snap below) was seen in St. Petersburg traffic .... Looking not unlike a mid-50s American car, it took some research before being identified as a Russian built GAZ M13 Chaika made in low production from the late 50s to the late 70s. The Chaika was only available to the elite, politicians, KGB etc. It was reported to be Nikita Khruschev’s favourite ‘limo’ and one was gifted to Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Believed modelled on a '55 Packard, the M13 was powered by a 195 hp 5.5L V8 and driven through a push-button automatic transmission. Now a collector car, the one seen has a new career as a wedding car.

What of the other Soviet-era cars we may know of by name: The Lada, of course, East Germany’s Trabant (Trabbie), the Tatra, Skoda, etc: The Skoda got new life under VW and dominates the streets of Prague & the Czech Republic. East Germany’s Trabant, the multiple ‘world’s worst car’ award winner was occasionally seen but only in a promotional role. The ’Lada’, sold as a VAZ in Russia, is quite a common sight but mostly in poor condition. The Lada of course was the subject of many jokes: Q.: What occupies the last 16 pages of the Lada User's Manual? A.: The bus and train timetables

20

Q.: What's the difference between a Jehovah's Witness and a Lada? A.: You can shut the door on a Jehovah's Witness

1964-66 Thunderbird Steering column problems Information supplied by Bird Nest West Linn, Oregon USA www.tbirdparts.com/ Typical symptoms: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

car slipping out of park pulling shift arm up to start the car steering column not sliding over shift lever drops through all gears by itself turn signal is not cancelling on right hand turns

These symptoms, either individually, or as a combination of a few are a recipe for disaster. It is common for us to receive a call from a customer who needs to replace thousands of dollars worth of parts because their shift lever slipped into neutral, rolled down a hill and smashed into a parked car/house. Being pinned up against a wall while checking your oil is no fun either. Mechanics being pulled under the car and run over. The saddest stories involve restoration shops, that leave the car running as they diagnose, the car slips into reverse and the T-Bird sideswipes a '55 Cadillac convertible, continues through the shop, and broadsides a freshly painted MG. (true stories) The combination of parts to fix these cars barely exceeds $100 dollars, so if your car is having any of these problems please call and lets save everybody some time, money and most importantly lives. List of parts required here: http://www.tbirdparts.com/64-66mainframe.htm Also.. Check out this great photo journal of a complete Flairbird steering column strip down http://thunderbird.seebart.org/photo-journals/steeringcolumnandshifter

..parts suppliers of interest At our last committee meeting Bill Flanagan and Barry Ralph talked about two parts suppliers in the USA that they had dealt with and had great experiences . Both these suppliers were able to supply parts a bit out of the ordinary for some of their later model Thunderbirds and Lincolns

However if you have found a good shop that has provided what you require then let us know and we shall list them for others to try out.
