A big hello to all club members.

I made it back from Lizard Island just in time for Cooly Rocks On. The cars as usual were awesome, expensive and some really rare. About a dozen or so club members met at Twin Towns RSL after the street parade on Saturday for lunch and a chat. Mark Russell and his lovely wife from the Thunderbird Club of Victoria who were up here for Coolys joined us for a chat and lunch as well. The club run to Cleveland Point last weekend was a great morning, the weather was cool, but fine and sunny. As can be seen on our website the club has a large variety of members cars. Last Sunday's run was a good example with a Lincoln, Mustang, Cobra, Torino, Fairlane, two T-Birds and a very nice 68 Chev Impala recently purchased by our Secretary Doug. We have had a great month for new memberships, five in total. I’d like to give a warm welcome to Bev Mackie 66’ Landau, James Ritter 67’ Hardtop, Joe Scott 56 Mainline, Graeme Williams 57’ and 64’ Hardtop and Ron Sharp 65’ Hardtop. You can see their cars below in the new members section. I believe Ron’s 65’ isn’t included due to it still being a work in progress. Hope to meet you all on a run soon… On that note.. our next club run is the Muscle on the Mountain Show N Shine at Maleny on the 5th of July. All details are in the calendar. It should be a great day and hope to see you all there... Barry Club President

Welcome to Volume 25 of your club magazine Sounds of Thunder.

Yes! 25 by this time next year that will be quarter of a century this magazine has been circulated to its members. I thought it fitting to devote a sizeable chunk of this first issue to a look back over that time, the fun we’ve had and the things we have achieved. First thing I did was turn to one of our longest standing and devoted members Bill McGregor and speak to him about my plans and asked if in his words he would give me some insight back over those years. He was more than happy to help as always. Some of you may not be aware but Bill was involved in a nasty road accident a few years ago. He has spent a substantial amount of that time getting over this but has still been able to commit a lot of time to the club. We are truly fortunate to still have him! Bill is a true gentleman and a great friend to us all. I’d also like to thank Dave and Darryl for reaching into their archives supplying me with early club meeting minutes and newsletters to share with you. I hope you enjoy what we have put together. The 2015/16 18 month calendar has been printed, it’s high quality, looks fantastic and is ready to order. Calendar coordinator Tony Lake and his graphics guru Jill Fechner have done a wonderful job with the organisation and production. We were very fortunate to get a substantial sponsorship donation from club member Neill Ford and his business, Yellow Cabs. An amount that made getting such a high quality calendar possible. We are truly thankful for that Neill. We are excited to be able to offer our members a copy for a very reasonable cost of only $10 including postage. You will have already received an email and order form from Tony but just in case I have included one with this magazine. For those emag subscribers It is also available on the club website or by clicking here: www.toqinc.org/calendar_form.pdf Until next time.. Johnny

A big hello to you all. A few lines to thank you for your patience as we settle into the coming financial year, once again heading for those bright sunny days designed for cruising in the 'Birds. My thanks to those dutiful souls who have preceded me in this position Di, Merron & Bill who have kept the Club in the black for many, many years and especially Bill McGregor who has patiently eased me gently into this role. However he was overheard to say “The difference between Ted and a computer, is that with a computer you only need to punch the information in ONCE..” Personally I never thought I would achieve another position handling money, after those 3 stints in Boggo Road Jail for embezzlement.. Just kidding! My aim is to keep your club in the black as it has been historically, so any suggestions regarding events to raise money from raffles or Trivia nights for example will be most welcome. Please contact me via email, snail mail or phone with any great ideas that are not illegal, naughty or fattening to get coins into our coffers. An observation run has crossed my mind, with a passenger of course, to note items of interest on a predetermined route on a scenic run, with the end at a picnic spot. I have had the great pleasure of attending quite a few Club runs (Cooly, Roadvale, Harrisville, Fort Lytton, Ebbw Vale, Gatton and much more) with quite a few friends who are all girls.. Funny about that? Before you jump to any conclusions they are all great friends, Merle, Swedish Josefine & Cheryl, along with my daughter Amber. You know if I owned a Thunderbird I could take them all out on the same day Hmmmmm. Don't miss the run to Maleny on Sunday July 5 which will blow your mind and also aid a great cause for Prostate Cancer Research. The cost? A gold coin donation. Catch you out cruising on the “blacktop” real soon. Cheers Tex

The Gabba Precinct.. Brisbane’s Hidden Jewel

On Sunday April 26th I took the club to one of my favourite places in BrisVegas… Woolloongabba. I love the feel of this area. It was once mostly an industrial area and a lot of the old buildings and warehouses remain today. A rare thing in Brisbane. The precinct at the start of Logan Rd tucked in behind Stanley Street has more of a Melbourne feel about it. Groovy café’s, restaurants cocktail bars and an Italian Bistro.. even a violin maker that works out of a shop front.. it’s all more akin to a European city than tropical Brisbane. Look up and you can’t miss the period Good Year Tyre advertising sign backdrop on the side of the old Morton Rubber Works building with a few Alexander Palms swaying in the warm Autumn breeze just to remind you that you are still in sunny Queensland. We were treated to perfect Autumn weather and a great turnout of members at our meeting point Palmdale Shopping Centre, Upper Mt Gravatt.

10

Our destination this day was a few hundred metres down the road The Woolloongabba Antique Centre. This place is eye candy overload so much to see under one roof… and on top of that there is a way cool 50s style café with booths you can relax in for a coffee. Of course first thing most did on arrival was grab said coffee and a bite to eat. You can spend a lot of time in this place browsing the isles of separate vendors stalls with their vast array of collectibles. It’s just a fun place to visit on a Sunday morning so if you missed out on the run and haven’t been I recommend a visit. The atmosphere is cool the coffee is great and the company of club friends as always a pleasure.

11

Thanks to Sarah Jane from the Woolloongabba Antique Centre for making us feel so welcome and for keeping the street front clear for us to park our cars. Till next time.. Johnny On the way there we spied a 1957 Mercury Monterey Hardtop behind chain wire in a car sales yard on Logan Rd Holland Park.. How often do you see one of these in Australia let alone for sale in an open yard? Graham and I stopped by and took a closer look on the way home.. $30K was the asking price we were told by a guy walking by that turned out to be the yard operator on the way to get the Sunday morning paper. As cool and as rare as this car is, it was in need of some TLC in the body dept.. even from a distance there was evidence of filler along the sills and other issues. It was fantastic to see anyway. What a way to top off a great morning out.

12

Fine Iron Rod & Custom Show & Swap Due to the bad weather earlier in the month the designated club run to the Fassifern 50s Festival had to be cancelled. Never fear! with the old car scene being what it is these days there is never a shortage of other things to do. The Annual Fine Iron Rod and Custom Car Club Show and Swap at Ipswich fitted the bill perfectly. The big event promotors seem to have got hold of a number of the growing local cars shows making them even bigger and at the same time charging high entry fees. These events can be a blast but it did make a welcome change to be able to go along to a very well organised local car club event that supported a worthwhile charity with entry at the gate being a very reasonable 5 bucks. This was the Fine Iron Rod and Custom Car Club’s 40th annual show and swap meet event and it was a ripper. After meeting at the BP at Rocklea we arrived around 7.30am.. already the swap was in full swing and the show field was quarter full. By nine it was a full house. There was a wonderful variety of classics and hot rods on display. The club members that attended enjoyed the morning immensely and are looking forward to going back again next year. Johnny

Did you notice on the magazine cover that this is edition Number 1 of Volume 25? That makes it 25 years of Sounds of Thunder and of course 25 years since the Thunderbirds of Queensland Inc first hit the highways... Twenty-five years, for most of us, is a substantial chunk of our lives. And yes, a quarter of a century has bought lots of change. When the club first met our (average) weekly earnings were $560.00, fuel, leaded of course, was about 62 cents per litre, but with interest rates at an eye-watering 15.0%, home loans were a bit of a worry. We were just grateful that this was an improvement on the 17.0% rates of a year or two earlier. With the A$ at 76 cents to the US$, not everything has changed, but hasn’t that rate had some highs and lows along the way. For entertainment, it was off to the movies to see ‘Thelma and Louise’ in their T-Bird or maybe Arnie in ‘Terminator 2’ dealing with other difficult motorists. At home we may have been cheered up watching Con the Fruiterer or Kylie Mole in the Comedy Company on TV. I don’t have a memory of 90s music but then I’m caught in the music time-tunnel elsewhere. We didn't catch up with friends or family on our mobile phones, because mostly we didn't have mobile phones. If we did, in size and weight, it was anything but mobile. Photos were picked up from the Chemist weeks after we finished the film roll, remember! We, or more correctly, some of us, were coming to terms with our first home computer. Internet, text messages, smartphones and apps were still on the distant horizon. I think we get the point, things have changed all around us and it's an ever-present moving process. 14

Similarly our club of 25 years has changed as well. It was beaut then, club & committee, members and events. It has seen many changes but it remains as good today as it was then, a great group, a credit to all concerned, again in club and committee, members and events.

If we should do a 'then and now comparison', the first thing we notice is not to do with our cars but probably with our lifestyle. For all the improvement in technology and communication, how come so often we find ourselves out-of-time. Won’t try to tackle that topic here ! ToQ does a great job in setting up a full calendar of events but for those of us familiar with earlier years the weekend overnight club run has become a scramble to organize or attend. Over the years, north, south or west, it was a weekend to Tin Can Bay, a weekend to Lismore, a weekend to Stanthorpe, a weekend to lots of destinations! It seemed to happen without too much fuss. There will be some photos around of a group of cars headed up the Cunninghams's Gap for an overnight stay in Stanthorpe, middle of winter, a stop at the winery, an Italian dinner by the fire at Anna's Restaurant. 15

TOQ represented at the Noosa Classic

Or how about an overnight stay at Coolum for the Noosa Classic with a drink or a meal on Hastings St for those inclined. It was not the norm, but as a group, we somehow got ourselves to the Beach Hop in New Zealand. Those and others, great times, but they seem to have lapsed due to demands on our time, competing arrangements or cost involved. Let's not give them away, we're just now talking about an overnight run to Maleny with dinner at the wonderful King Ludwig's German restaurant. We have done it before, had a terrific time and hopefully the years ahead will bring a revival in opportunities for these types of outings. Maybe next year... Left.. Merron with New Zealand Thunderbird Club members. Below.. Birds in the Parade & the beautiful NZ coastline - Beach Hop 2004

16

Fun times at King Ludwig’s German Restaurant Maleny. We’ve had a few..

And for something totally different.. On the Yankee Doodle Cruise in 2006 the guys performed a moonshine bust skit on the service road alongside the Ettamogah Pub and Aussie World on the Sunshine Coast... Much to the delight of the strong attendance we used to draw to our annual American car cruise in those days..

It's now more than a decade since we have hosted a ‘National’ event. With visitors from interstate and overseas and with cars travelling from as far as Melbourne the two events under the title of 'Thunder in the Sun' were both terrific successes, one based on the Gold Coast, one based in Brisbane. With a full weekend of events, accommodation and destinations these called for some dedicated organising but the outcome seemed to make the effort more than worthwhile for those attending, both members and visitors. Queensland will always be a great destination and our visitors have made that clear by having a great stay and letting us know so.

‘Thunder in the Sun’ 1998 We welcomed not only visitors from southern states but Jerry Wotel from California. Long term internet savvy Thunderbird owners will know Jerry as the keeper of the Thunderbird Cybernest www.tbird.org the first ever Internet website created for Thunderbird enthusiasts. Off that website he runs an email mailing list which still exists in the same format today. Accommodation for visitors was at a Broadbeach Hotel. On the meet n greet night we celebrated club patriarch Cec Roobottom’s 75th Birthday. Saturday we paraded our cars on the streets of Surfers Paradise as part of the Tropicana Festival.. The convertibles carrying the Queen Quest entrants. The Show n Shine was held at the Gold Coast Arts Centre on Bundall Rd. We had all the Thunderbirds lined up in their respective ages. It was a sight to behold and the largest number of Thunderbirds I had ever seen together in Australia. Saturday night saw the whole group attend Dracula's Theatre Restaurant for dinner and entertainment. President Mark O’Neill along with his band of helpers did a marvellous job organising the second Thunder in the Sun weekender in the club’s history the first being held in July 1992 at Twin Waters Resort at Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast. You can see the original flyer on the back cover…

Thunderbirds on Parade..

18

‘Thunder in the Sun’ 2001 was as big a success as 1998.. This time we welcomed three guests from overseas John Rotella, founder of LOVEfords the online Ford owners club and keeper of the Thunderbird Registry also 1967 Ford collector and authority Adrian Clements from the USA along with LOVEfords members Greg Moore from New Zealand and Darren Will from Melbourne. Darren collected John and Adrian in Sydney and road tripped them to QLD in his stunning red 67 Galaxie Hardtop. An American couple from the Vintage Thunderbird Club International who’s names escape me, happened to be holidaying in QLD at the same time heard about our event and joined in. Accommodation for our visitors was at a Kangaroo Point Hotel. The Show n Shine on Saturday was held at the Arts Centre precinct at Southbank and the crowds flocked. We dinner cruised the Brisbane River on Saturday night holding an awards presentation for the trophy winners after dinner. The weekend was topped off with a sightseeing car cruise for our guests to the Sunshine Coast via Mary Cairncross Park Maleny, Montville then a run down to Kings Beach at Caloundra. Again a wonderfully organised event by then President Howard Gotch. All in all two events I’ll remember fondly for a long time to come...

16 19

In 2006 we participated in the annual Wintersun Nostalgia Festival at Coolangatta as a club. Being close to the action, club members John and Amanda Anderson from Fingal heard that the Wintersun organisers wanted a car club to be represented that year. The Greenmount Surf Club at the Southern end of the Esplanade was the location available to display the Thunderbirds. Amanda and John went into full swing putting forward the Thunderbirds of QLD to the Wintersun Committee as the ideal marque and club and in doing so secured us the location. This opportunity proved very popular and attracted a fantastic turnout of members and their cars. We even had members from the QLD division of the TOCA join us. It was a great opportunity for us to get all the cars together at this event, something that is near impossible at any other time. Despite the distance down the Esplanade from the main action the Thunderbirds drew a great crowd of onlookers all day.

20

There could be no doubt in anyone’s mind that the highlight of the last few years was our club’s 21st Anniversary Celebration at Lakeside Raceway in March 2013. What a location for an occasion like this. Over seventy members and friends in attendance with special guests including founding member Doug Bradley and original members Neil and Rhonda Weidenhofer on hand to help us celebrate the milestone. The afternoon began with a cruise session on track. The evening included a rolling picture show of club moments, a slide show history of the club presented by Dave and Darryl, a three course meal and later in the evening the cutting of the 21st Anniversary Cake. Club President Kieran Cusack worked tirelessly for nearly twelve months bringing this event together along with an organising committee that met on numerous occasions in my shed polishing the finer details of the evening’s presentation. A wonderful event and a success it truly was...

21

The club’s agenda for events large or small has generally been driven by our club’s Presidents with support from both committee and membership. We have been fortunate to have an honour board of Presidents, from Doug Bradley in the initial years to Barry today and a great group in between. It’s been their much needed varying drive that’s provided renewed outlook and interest as the years have passed. Another foundation of the club rests with our committee meetings. Once a month for 25 years (now that’s a lot of meetings), committee have been hosted by our members at their homes. As a combined organisational and social event, they continue to be a great success and a moment of thanks go to all who have volunteered as hosts. And where would we have been without the magazine we are currently reading. From day one there has been ‘Sounds of Thunder’. The elected committee AGM 2006 From the early years when Darryl, with limited resources, would produce a great mag from his manual portable typewriter, to the current truly professional print and electronic editions that Johnny is currently producing each second month. I think the term ‘cut and paste’ summarises the change there. For Darryl ‘cut and paste’ was scissors and glue, today it’s the ability to bring together a number of technologies, but for whatever it’s been, all along we’ve had mighty publications from a string of Editors willing to give the significant time and effort it takes to cover the club’s current and future activities and to inform and entertain. It’s our club’s most time consuming position and we have been extremely fortunate to have always had members willing to take on the role.

22

The original news letters were at first one or two pages dealing with the starting up of a new club and listing events. Sounds of Thunder wasn’t used as the name for the newsletter until later in the first year. When the first named that way was sent to members it had changed from a single sheet of A4 to an A5 size folded flyer. By December 1991 it had reverted back to A4 size and had become a multi page newsletter. Below are the minutes from the meeting that spawned the beginning of a club that has grown strength to strength over the past 25 years. A club all members should cherish and be proud to be a part of. Within weeks of this meeting the paper work had been filed with the Justice Dept and the Thunderbirds of Queensland had become an incorporated club.

23

21 years of Sounds of Thunder on display at Our 21st Anniversary Celebration Our club membership has never been larger than it is today. It’s continuing to grow with the widest range of classic cars, Thunderbirds or otherwise, in the club’s history. With a wide variety of events available, participation of members has never been better. With new methods of contact, a web site and a very active Facebook page, we have new avenues of communication, not only between our members, but in many cases classic cars enthusiasts across the world. We are a club for Queensland but Queensland is a large physical area so we live within the limitations of distance but we do continue to support membership from throughout the State to whatever extent possible. Our first 25 years have been rewarding for members, current and past, for the pleasure it’s bought in sharing in all aspects of our hobby, the benefits of sharing our technical knowledge, for travel to all the destinations and events we can think of and, possibly most important of all, for the friends and friendship gained. We don’t have the fortune teller’s crystal ball to let us know what’s ahead, we expect that change will continue to occur both in our club and in our wider world but we have every reason to believe in continued success for Thunderbirds of Queensland and we look forward to going along for the ride ahead... Bill McGregor
