From the Editor While 2020’s second quarter showed some promise of growth, there is little surprise that the world is still recovering and adapting from the impact of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. Procedural changes such as enhanced distancing protocols, requiring the use of personal protective equipment, and even full shutdowns of major cities and states have been used to flatten the curve. The manufacturing sector has been more than resilient to these changes. Many manufacturers have learned to not only adapt, but have shifted their production to help in the ongoing efforts to combat the threat of the virus. The Washington Post reported that our shutdowns and social distancing prevented a potential of 60 million cases of infection, and many states have already begun the process of fully reopening. The fact remains that until there is a vaccine, or highly effective treatment protocol, the dangers of COVID-19 are still legitimate, and should not be understated. For the first time since World War II, the International Manufacturing Technology Show has had to cancel. State restrictions mandate that the city of Chicago will not be able to hold large conventions or trade shows until they manage to enter their fifth phase of reopening. Until there is some form of reliable treatment, largescale events like IMTS, may have to be put on hold. The implications of this are far reaching for the entire industry, as well as providing further financial impact on manufacturers, suppliers, and even local businesses that rely on these trade events as a source of income. IMTS has prepared two comprehensive digital programs that will provide the shows exhibitors an opportunity to connect with manufacturing professionals, and will return to McCormick Place in 2022. Precautions and cancelations, while an inconvenience, are the correct measures to adhere to while the virus remains a threat. Many forget, that in 1920, America was well into the third wave of the Spanish Flu pandemic. John and Horace Dodge, manufacturing pioneers and founders of the Dodge Brothers Company, attended an auto show held in New York. While technology has changed dramatically in a hundred years’ time, the behavior of the typical exhibitor or attendee of events such as these, has not changed much at all. Groups of people would be unable to maintain social distancing requirements. They would shake hands and engage in conversations. It was here that the brothers, who had built an automotive rival to Henry Ford’s Ford Motor Company, contracted influenza and pneumonia, and both would be dead before the years end. The world, of course, did not stop then, and will not stop now. Manufacturers and fabricators across the country will continue to adapt, and suppliers will continue to meet their ongoing needs. This includes equipment that helps end-users adapt to distancing requirements, further applications of automation technology, and even more digital solutions that can provide immediate remote assistance. Manufacturers have the opportunity to grow and make the changes that can lay a foundation for the next hundred years. We will be here for you. Talking Shop Just from an ergonomic standpoint alone, cobots are a real asset to anyone working long hours on the production floor. FEATURING:

TALKING SHOP WITH: Amanda McLenithan — Senior Engineer, Collaborative Robot Team, FANUC America I understand there are different types of cobots. What are the general categories? There are four types of collaborative robot operation, beginning with Power and Force Limiting cobots, which are probably what most people are thinking of when they hear the term collaborative robots. They are designed specifically to be able to sense contact with human workers and cease operation, eliminating the need for safety barriers. They are best suited for smaller applications. For the other three types of collaborative operation, any industrial robot can be integrated with safety devices to be able to become “collaborative” Safety Rated Monitored Stop cobots, which detect when a person has entered a designated area and stops operating until the person leaves that shared workspace, which eliminates the need to have to restart the robot with the push of a button. Once the person leaves, the robot can continue automatically with its task. These are generally used when there isn’t as much interaction between people and the cobot. Speed and Separation cobots, also sometimes referred to as “fenceless,” work well when there is not much interaction with a person, but a person needs easy access to the robot. Safety laser area scanners are commonly used to set up zones near the robot’s workspace so that when a person starts to approach the robot, its movement is slowed down, and it stops altogether once that person gets within reach of the robot’s workspace. As soon as the operator moves out of the robot’s workspace, the robot can resume what it was doing automatically. The final category is known as Hand Guiding cobots, which is where a safety rated device is attached to the end of the robot arm and allows someone to manually guide or move the robot around. This type is often used to help program new paths and positions quickly and easily in just that way — by hand. This type is ideal for mobile applications, moving the cobot between stations and training it to accomplish different tasks, and where the robot needs to frequently be reprogrammed for a new job.

8  |  IMD  |  Q2 2020

What were some of the biggest challenges that had to be overcome when cobots as we now know them were first introduced into the industrial environment? As can be expected, we needed to help people overcome the notion that cobots were going to replace their jobs, when they were actually there to function as an assistant in tasks that a person either wouldn’t want to do, like picking parts all day, or would find physically difficult, like lifting heavy objects. A cobot could lift a large car door during assembly, for instance, and hold it in place while a worker made the delicate electrical connections that a cobot couldn’t accomplish. Just from an ergonomic standpoint alone, cobots are a real asset to anyone working long hours on the production floor. Another challenge involved risk assessment, during which the determination is made as to whether a cobot would be suitable for a particular workspace or application. While it’s a definite space-saving benefit of a cobot to be able to eliminate the safety enclosure, you have to remember there are many other moving parts within that work area — there’s a lot more going on in there than just the cobot’s activities. So there are a lot of variables to take into consideration. We had to rethink things like exposure to pneumatic mechanical grippers, and how to keep people safe working near them, so there were a whole host of issues to consider. Nothing can ever be taken for granted in the manufacturing environment.

IMD – The Industry’s Most Extensive Industrial Publication

At the same time, what are the primary benefits that have been realized over the years? Again, the space savings gained by eliminating the safety enclosure really streamlines the workspace, and the flexibility you gain by being able to move a cobot from station to station was a huge asset that people immediately recognized and appreciated. In fact, I think one of the capabilities we hadn’t quite envisioned at the beginning of all this that has turned out to be a huge value-add is how well suited cobots are for high-mix/low volume applications. If you take a look at our new CRX Series, you’ll notice that we’ve paid a lot of attention to things like ease of installation as well as the simplification of teaching it to perform new tasks and functions. That allows users to quickly move from one job or one part to another without having to invest too much time or effort into setting up for whatever needs to be done next. Plus the CRX cobots are lightweight and easy to handle, making them ideal for mobile applications. And another thing we’ve done is designed them to support a new tablet teach pendant as the HMI between the operator and the cobot, which is a much more familiar means of digital communication for most people. And as we see advances in AI, making cobots and other robotic and automatic systems more intuitive, the interface between operator and machine is becoming more fluid and productive, really underscoring the collaborative nature of this technology.  Modex 8in x 4.75in Ad Amanda.pdf

Talking Shop Our soft fingers eliminate pinch points, providing what we feel is the safest gripper available for collaborative robots, where safety is of paramount importance. FEATURING:

TALKING SHOP WITH: Lisa Donnelly — Vice President of Marketing, Soft Robotics So how did this gripping technology come into being? A chemist at Harvard University, Dr. George Whitesides, was intrigued by the skill and agility with which octopi used their tentacles to manipulate a wide variety of objects of different sizes and material consistencies, automatically adjusting its grip pressure and tentacle configuration. He was able to partner with the Department of Defense to develop the technology. Our CEO, Carl Vause, learned of this work and immediately saw how valuable it would be for manufacturing and packaging applications. So it was agreed that Soft Robotics would be formed and stand as the go-tomarket representative for this gripper technology.

What were the first markets to understand this product’s potential? Automotive was the first industry to realize the potential of traditional automation since they have so many consistent processes and products that are readily automated. Traditional gripper design works well with consistent part geometries, but it didn’t translate to industries where there is natural variation in products or a very high mix of low-volume SKUs. Having to change a gripper each time the SKU changes is time-consuming and costly. The Soft Robotics gripper enables the automation of industries that have products with variation, that are delicate in nature, or have stringent surface finish requirements. Developing relationships with companies such as FANUC and ABB, who also became investors, has been valuable, and that list has grown much longer over time. This allowed us access to their global trade channels in a wide variety of markets.

Are your grippers compatible with different types and makes of robots and cobots? We describe ourselves as being “robot agnostic” so that the grippers can be paired with virtually any type or brand of robot. Because of our relationship with companies like FANUC and Universal Robots, we’ve developed specific control systems that integrate with their platforms to allow gripper manipulation directly from the teach pendant. Plus,

10  |  IMD  |  Q2 2020

our grippers can be configured to match just about any OEM’s robotic arm. Our mGrip adaptable system includes both the gripper and a controller. In fact, our controller system is central to the gripper’s ability to automatically adjust to different types of parts without halting production, and with no additional reprogramming required. This

IMD – The Industry’s Most Extensive Industrial Publication

is also ideal for operations that produce small lots since the gripper automatically adjusts to part changes without the need for sensors or an expensive vision system. This allows our grippers to reconfigure to pick up anything from a loaf of bread to large, heavy parts and materials. We even have a demonstration for our cobot controllers, where someone puts their hand in the gripper and actually feels how it regulates its grip pressure according to what it’s holding, providing a delicate but secure grip.

This technology seems ideal for cobots working in proximity to human operators. Absolutely, which is completely intentional. As cobot technology evolves, our grippers enable adoption throughout any manufacturing or packaging process. There are the ergonomic benefits I’ve mentioned, along with meeting safety concerns involving human/cobot interaction. Our soft fingers eliminate pinch points, providing what we feel is the safest gripper available for collaborative robots, where safety is of paramount importance.

Tell us about the services you offer to your customers. We have a dedicated sales team, knowledgeable application engineers, and every type of engineer you can imagine, We’re prepared for whatever challenge an end-user might encounter. Besides service and maintenance assistance, these professionals also provide consultation to customers as they choose the ideal type of gripper system for their particular application. So our

relationship with our customers is in-depth and ongoing. And we’re really proud of the fact that our technology helps keep the supply chain functioning smoothly, especially during times such as these when we’re dealing with issues like coronavirus exposure in the workplace. We are constantly adapting to the evolving nature of robot/cobot developments.  For more information go to www.softroboticsinc.com.

Talking Shop

We design all of our products to be mounted to any type of robot, so we’re saving the time some companies would spend having engineers design so many custom models

FEATURING:

TALKING SHOP WITH: Kristian Hulgard — General Manager/Americas, OnRobot OnRobot is a relatively young company. Could you give us an overview? Of course. The company was established in 2015 in Denmark by two engineers who had worked for a robotics manufacturer. They wanted to design grippers and other accessories for collaborative applications that featured easy installation and ease of use; basically technology that you could take out of the box and quickly be ready to go to work. As new investors came onboard, OnRobot was able to acquire companies whose products perfectly complemented our own, which has resulted in tremendous growth. These acquisitions are ongoing. We are now active in nearly every region of the world. North American operations are based in Dallas, Texas.

Talk about the evolution of your product line, and especially this focus on flexibility and simplicity. We first launched the RG line of two-finger grippers. These are designed for quick installation and easy programming directly from the robot’s existing controls; there is no extra training required. The beauty of these grippers is the flexibility they provide in shifting production between different parts of varying sizes and geometries. They are powered by electricity, so all that’s required to shift between parts is a quick adjustment

12  |  IMD  |  Q2 2020

to the gripper’s parameters and you’re ready to go, whereas you would have to purchase a specialized unit for each different part if you were using pneumatic grippers. We then introduced the Gecko Gripper, which relies on technology originally developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for space applications. It doesn’t require compressed air, instead utilizing van der Waals forces – the same principle that allows geckos to climb walls – to pick up and transfer flat, smooth and porous materials without damaging the surface finish. Other products include a three-finger gripper, electricvacuum gripper, vision systems, a soft gripper, and quick changers. And the applications are endless, including pick and place, machine tending, packaging and palletizing, assembly, quality testing and inspection, and surface finishing, among many others. We currently offer about a dozen products, and we plan to launch about 20 more in the coming year. Our goal is to provide all of the products that go on and around robots.

What other benefits do these attributes provide? It’s been said that within five years, there will be 10 times as many robots in operation. So how do you deploy all the accessories required to make a robot or a cobot operational when you’re dealing with such high numbers? What is the fastest and least-expensive way of tooling up a new robot that’s just been delivered to the

IMD – The Industry’s Most Extensive Industrial Publication

shop floor? That’s where the value of easy installation and operation become apparent. In addition, we design all of our products to be mounted to any type of robot, so we’re saving the time some companies would spend having engineers design so many custom models. Our equipment is meant to be plug and play which, if you think about it, is really bridging the gap between the OEM and end user. Our distributors and integrators play an important role in our customer supply chain, but the more the operator can do on their own the quicker they’re able to go into production. Plus, our sales model is set up so that dedicated OnRobot employees strategically manage distributors in their territories, allowing us to closely monitor the markets we serve. This also helps guide our new product development, in that we can respond to a significant need for screwdriving accessories, for instance.  For more information please visit www.onrobot.com.

Business 4.0

How To Ensure The Success Of Your IIoT-Powered Business Transformation

A

s manufacturers and machinists, you're increasingly pressed to work faster and cheaper while providing better results. And your customers usually only engage with you when they have a problem or a challenge. For most businesses, the answer to higher customer engagement is through data, which through IIoT (industrial internet of things) can be accessed remotely from machines to drive insight-led decisions. This allows you to move swiftly and, more importantly, proactively, instead of reacting to customer events. At the same time, you can benefit from opportunities for new revenue streams and business models.

Determining Your Desired Business Outcomes In my experience, success is strongly tied to understanding the benefits of technology before ever implementing anything new or different to your business. Taking some time to consider how tech can impact your business outcomes can help you uncover the right changes for your situation, such as:

More Efficient Production Lines The ability to ensure your machinery has high production efficiency and is always up and available is one of the promises of IIoT-led business transformations. Through constant monitoring and analysis of your assets, you can gather real-time insights into areas of your operations that can be optimized, allowing teams to work more effectively and without any unplanned downtime.

Predictive Capabilities The output of data aggregated through connecting machinery and processes allows your business to predict events such as maintenance needs or anomalies before they occur — offering more intelligence into the machine operations. This capability significantly reduces costs related to a decrease in unplanned downtime, improving your production efficiency while making your operations agile and profitable. Furthermore, by improving reaction time to address preventative maintenance events, predictability can reduce time spent during planned outages and, more importantly, ensure lower maintenance budgets.

New Business Models And Revenue Streams While operators of machinery benefit from predictability and efficiency of the machines, one of the most exciting and

14  |  IMD  |  Q2 2020

beneficial outcomes of modern business transformations is the ability for machine manufacturers to switch to servitization financial models, otherwise known as 'equipment-as-a-service' (EaaS). EaaS is critical for various reasons, including aligning of interests between operators and machine manufacturers, cost savings for operators, and more stable and predictable revenue models for manufacturers — a necessity especially in times of economic uncertainty. Like software-as-a-service, dubbed SaaS by the tech industry, EaaS allows manufacturers to lease out production on a contractual basis. With this model, customers pay for the output as an operating expense versus large capital expenditures. One example of EaaS in action is Coborn, a company that supplies machines for the diamond tooling industry. Traditionally, its fully automatic and highly precise grinding machines would be purchased outright by its customers. Now, by making its machines “smart” and utilizing AI-based analytics, not only can Coborn provide its equipment for a usage fee, but the company can also guarantee performance, reliability, and availability targets.

By offering “diamond-grinding-asa-service,” Coborn can also have more touchpoints for support to interact with the customer, strengthening the relationship, as well as predicting new needs or pain points.

Should You Buy Or Build A Smart Ecosystem? For many businesses, deciding to bring on new technologies and business processes is only the first step. From there, you need to determine whether the best option is to build an intelligent platform yourself or bring in an expert partner. Either way, the most important thing to remember is that if you're approaching a digital business transformation only from a money-saving perspective, you're putting the proverbial cart before the horse. Cost savings are a typical byproduct of intelligent machines, simplified financial models, and improved operations; however, a successful implementation takes more than technological capabilities to save on expenses. Success also depends on your internal skills and expertise, how well teams are aligned on goals and key performance indicators (KPIs), and your organizational collaboration. There are several important questions to consider before a single device or sensor gets set up to help determine if you should work with a partner or go at it alone. Understanding your staffing capabilities: Does your team have the vital skills needed to build the right connectivity and security into your new business platform and workflows? Even the most basic business transformation project requires a broad range of specialty expertise, from server infrastructure and software development to embedded technologies and electrical engineering, not to mention the skilled staff on the shop floor who will physically install and maintain the devices and systems. These skill sets ensure a functioning technology ecosystem that remains secure. Understanding your budget: Do you have available resources to focus on the project in addition to your core business? Even if your team has the technical experience and skills, they'll be siphoned away from their current responsibilities in other areas of your business. Do you have the bandwidth for this? If not, you'll have to hire and retain new employees who have the skills needed to make your business transformation project successful. Understanding your timeline: Do you have the time to train your team on the required areas of technology and modern processes? No matter the size of your platform, every IIoT-based project requires ample time and resources. Once your strategy is in place, and you purchase the necessary technology and devices, you'll need

to train and deploy resources to implement, manage, monitor, and maintain the new systems. Understanding how your project will grow: Is your solution scalable, and will it keep up with ever-evolving technology? Any IIoT ecosystem should be hardwired with adaptability and extensibility from the beginning. This ensures it can extend to other projects or units within your business and continue to grow with you over time.

INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY DIGEST.COM

IMD  |  15

Beyond the rollout, plan on your IIoT solution to remain in motion. With ongoing tech advancements and additional opportunities uncovered when you start aggregating data, be sure to consider the long-term nature of your platform as well.

Which Route Is Right For Your Business? Regardless if you decide to buy or build your intelligent business platform, it's essential first to get internal alignment. While IT will need to be involved for technical aspects, leadership from the business side, such as sales, operations, product development, HR, and so on, are also critical. Ensuring everyone is aligned when it comes to defining success helps for a smooth implementation. Working with an expert partner can help facilitate these conversations; however, not all third parties are of the same caliber. When you're investing hundreds of thousands, or even millions, on technology integration, you must find a partner who understands your desired business outcomes. This partner should work closely with decision-makers at your business to implement the solutions needed to fit your specific needs. To find the best solutions providers, evaluate their responses to the following questions to get a sense of their processes and how you will work together: 1. Will the project be customized to your business? 2. How do they approach the benefits you'll receive by working with them? 3. Do they converse with technical jargon, or do they communicate in a way that means something to you? 4. How will they support you in the beginning and with your ongoing needs? 5. Do they discuss how to scale the project to other areas of your business?

16  |  IMD  |  Q2 2020

6. Do they offer retrofitting or ways to connect the IIoT solution with your legacy systems? While their responses will help you find the right fit for your business, remember that all problems aren't equal, which primarily drives the need for customized solutions. After all, finding the right co-creator in developing your IIoT project can mean the difference between success and failure.

Don't Wait To Get Started The benefits of undergoing an IIoT business transformation in manufacturing and machining operations are clear, especially at a time when your customers are demanding higher-quality products for less money and quicker turnarounds. Whether you attempt to build a proprietary platform or work with a third-party partner, embracing digitization can give you the competitive edge for years to come — well after IIoT becomes the standard in the industry.

Tooling Systems for the Factory of the Future

BAM GmbH revolutionizes the areas of individual component production and custom machinery - relying on proven tooling systems from BIG KAISER.

F

ounded in 2011, BAM GmbH, based in Weiden, Bavaria, is a rapidly growing company. In the past 18 months, the number of its employees has increased from 30 to 150. This, of course, necessitates additional production equipment such as milling machines and the appropriate tooling systems.

AI-Driven Manufacturing The manufacturing and engineering industry is full of traditions, valuable experience and established conventions. However, some of these are now showing their age. "I wanted to fundamentally transform the way in which machine components are manufactured. This is why I decided to start my own business," says Marco Bauer, a specialist in business informatics and managing director of BAM GmbH, the originator of the up2parts online platform.

"Our online platform www.up2parts.com is a revolutionary milestone in the world of manufacturing,” says Marco Bauer. “Today, it is very common for parts to be designed in 3D CAD systems. Unfortunately, customers often provide the manufacturer with two-dimensional PDF drawings of their desired fit and tolerance modifications.” The manufacturer's CAM programmer then reapplies this information back into their 3D model, which can result in quality issues and discrepancies between the modifications in the 2D drawings and the original 3D models. “Furthermore, it can be extremely difficult to accurately draw modern, complex components in 2D,” says Marco Bauer. The main issue, however, is that preparing drawings and quotes costs valuable time, which equates to a loss of money for both customer and manufacturer. INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY DIGEST.COM

Viktor Buchholz, Stefan Bauer, Head of Production at BAM GmbH, and Armin Salbaum, Application Engineer at BIG KAISER.

From Standard Production To Full-Service Provider The up2parts online platform transforms the component manufacturing process right from the initial inquiry. Customers upload 3D models of their individual components directly to up2parts.com; specify any existing features such as fits, threads, and tolerances; and then order the production of the part directly online or generate a quote in PDF format. "We are several steps ahead of the competition,” says Marco Bauer. “The up2parts platform is a software developer, online configurator, and manufacturing company all-in-one. We produce every part that is ordered via up2parts.com at our Bavarian facility, using more than 40 production machines at the site."

Automation Needs Process Reliability "We are already highly automated," explains Stefan Bauer, head of production at BAM GmbH. "A robot takes standardized blanks from a magazine and clamps them in the appropriate production machine. A few moments later, we are holding the finished component in our hands. To ensure that all this works flawlessly, we use only premium systems from renowned brands such as DMG MORI and Hermle, and compatible tooling systems from BIG KAISER." "BAM must guarantee reliable thread tapping, which is essential for the smooth operation of automated processes," says Armin Salbaum, application engineer at BIG KAISER. "When tapping threads by machine, the rotation speed of the tap must match the feed rate exactly.” In systems without length compensation, the tap often breaks off as a result of the high cutting forces. This not only disrupts the production process but can also ruin the workpiece. “Thanks to automatic length compensation, the MEGA Synchro holder from

BIG KAISER compensates for synchronization errors during thread tapping,” says Salbaum. “The resultant cutting forces are thus reduced by up to 90%.” Stefan Bauer adds, "The slim, modular design of the MEGA Synchro holder gives us easy handling, quality and, above all, Quality and reliability are achieved thanks to the MEGA Synchro holder. Process reliability is a prerequisite for Industry 4.0 and for digital production platforms such as up2parts.

reliability. After all, a perfectly optimized automated process is not going to be of much use if I have to stop it to replace broken or prematurely worn out taps, or spend time removing them from workpieces. With reliable tools like the MEGA Synchro holder from BIG KAISER, we can easily meet our delivery deadlines."

Custom-Made Precision Another important part of BAM’s business is custom engineering where they design and manufacture virtually anything. From automated systems that screw together slatted bed frames to precise optical systems and 3D printers, BAM GmbH's custom engineering department handles a huge variety of individual customer projects. "Precision is particularly important when it comes to optical systems," emphasizes Stefan Bauer. "We like to use KERN machines to manufacture down to micrometer precision levels. With such tight tolerances, the entire precision chain must be finely tuned, right down to the milling or tapping tool, and its holder. If something fails to align at any point along this chain, for example, the concentricity, you can forget about precision. That's why we rely on high-precision tool clamping technology from BIG KAISER.” Marco Bauer summarizes, "The added value that we provide to our customers derives from superior processes. 2D drawings are no longer needed, and in the five working days that some of our competitors need to prepare a quote, we've quite often delivered the finished product to the customer.” All components are manufactured on-site at BAM’s premises. They have competent personnel at every step and utilize an extensive machine park consisting of DMG MORI, Hermle and KERN machines and premium tools and tool holders from BIG KAISER. “Our innovations are based on a rock-solid foundation of state-of-the-art machines, tools and production know-how," says Marco Bauer.  For more information, visit www.bigkaiser.com

Competent personnel, machines from Hermle and KERN, premium tools from BIG KAISER transform BAM’s innovative ideas into reality.

As a result of its continuous growth, BAM has had to invest in production equipment such as machining centers and stock up on appropriate tool systems.

The 360º “Revolution” In Turning

High Dynamic Turning with the FreeTurn standard range tooling from CERATIZIT is now available In September 2019, CERATIZIT launched the first standard range of products for its innovative High Dynamic Turning (HDT) with FreeTurn process at EMO. The tool manufacturer has taken the next step in revolutionizing turning. CERATIZIT was joined by leading machine tool and control system manufacturers as well as providers of CAD/CAM systems. This new development is now available and will be showcased to the North American market.

H

igh Dynamic Turning (HDT) from CERATIZIT has turned conventional turning methods into a new direction. This new turning technology, combined with the company’s dynamic FreeTurn tooling, means that it is now possible to carry out all traditional turning operations such as roughing, finishing, contour

turning, face turning and longitudinal turning with just one tool. HDT with FreeTurn represents a completely new method of turning. For 100 years, new cutting materials, new chip breakers and a few new tooling systems have been invented to optimize turning. However, the actual basic turning process has remained

IMD – The Industry’s Most Extensive Industrial Publication

essentially unchanged. Even today, a contour is created with an indexable insert at a fixed angle to the workpiece. This method has not changed, even with the addition of controllable axes in modern turning-milling centers, machines which are intended to serve one purpose, namely, to manufacture a component as completely as possible within a single machine work envelope. CERATIZIT has taken advantage of the features on these turningmilling centers and developed the High Dynamic Turning (HDT) System. The simple idea behind HDT: the tool approach and point of contact in the machine can be varied as opposed to conventional turning with a fixed tool.

Customized Safety Lifting Devices For Any Application

Utilizing The Milling Spindle For 360° Degrees of Freedom Instead of the classic, static position of the insert in the holder, the milling spindle is now used to produce the corresponding approach angle to the workpiece. The use of the spindle drive, in conjunction with the slim, axial tool design of the FreeTurn tools by CERATIZIT, creates a degree of freedom of 360° without the risk of collision, thus providing unprecedented flexibility. Due to the rotation around its own tool axis, the cutting edge change can be done without interrupting the cutting process. Additionally, the angle of approach is freely variable at any time and can even be changed while cutting. This not only enables flexible machining of almost every workpiece contour, but also optimum chip breaking, higher feed rates and an increase in tool life. Depending on the machine capabilities, the technology can be used functionally in all areas of turning operations. The approach of the milling spindle on the Y/Z axis on turning-milling centers is widespread. As a result, further possibilities can be achieved with HDT that seemed previously unachievable. For example, cutting from above and below is possible. Depending on the machining area and workpiece size, this freedom can be an important factor in production.

Safely Lifts Up To 500 lbs! Ergonomic Portable Lightweight Meets OSHA & ASME Requirements

Freeturn Inserts With More Than 2 Variable Features In the future of HDT, the static turning tools of the past will be replaced by dynamic tools. One such dynamic tooling solution is FreeTurn by CERATIZIT. The defining characteristic of FreeTurn tooling is its simple structure. The tool holder, together with its slim shank and axial concept which optimizes the direction of the cutting forces into the spindle, form a stable unit. At the cutting end, there is a multi-sided insert, which is simply screwed in place. The principle is quite simple: the patented FreeTurn insert can consist of several cutting edges with different properties. This allows for different angle points, corner radii or chip breakers - even different coatings and cutting materials are conceivable. The tool can therefore be adapted to the machining requirements, offering the further advantage of replacing several tools on a job. This, in turn, leads to significant savings in tool change times, tool magazine loadouts and tool costs overall. The result is making components with highly complex contours without limitation, using only one FreeTurn tool. This flexibility ensures complex component holding can be quickly and effectively adapted to the new machining situation.

All contours can be machined in one setup, as the traditional turning operations of roughing, finishing, contour turning, face turning and longitudinal turning are all accomplished with a single tool.

The Future Of Turning Starts Now! With High Dynamic Turning and the FreeTurn tools by CERATIZIT, a new era in turning has arrived. In terms of efficiency, HDT exceeds the conventional turning process many times over and, as the experts from CERATIZIT are demonstrating daily, will replace the classic approaches, sooner than later. This new turning technology will continue to open and reveal possibilities in the future to make turning processes faster and more precise. The future of turning will rapidly change with HDT and CERATIZIT developers are looking forward to supporting their customers along this journey, according to a company spokesman.

Saving Tools And Machining Time In one recent application at Spanish wheel manufacturer ROTOR, an indexable insert with two different cutting edges was used to manufacture an aluminium wheel hub. One cutting edge is used for roughing (1500 rpm, ap = 2 mm, f = 0.4 mm/rev) and one for finishing (2000 rpm, ap < 1 mm, f = 0.25 mm/rev). When using HDT, the approach angle can be changed during machining, making it possible to machine all contours in just one setup, even undercuts that would not be possible with a standard approach angle of 90°. The tool is also able to cut in both directions, saving time-consuming rapid moves and increasing efficiency. In comparison to the turning process normally used by ROTOR for wheel hubs, this machining process used four fewer tools and reduced the machining time by 30%.

The First HDT Solutions Since CERATIZIT presented High Dynamic Turning and FreeTurn tools, a number of major machine and control system manufacturers have begun developing solutions for an automated process. CAD/CAM providers have also begun to develop solutions for programming HDT-specific program sequences. A number of

promising CAM programs were on display at EMO 2019, including Open Mind and Siemens NX. CERATIZIT HDT and FreeTurn tools also generated considerable interest during the live presentations from machine manufacturers DMG Mori and Mazak.

Freeturn Is Ready Now! From the beginning of the HDT process, CERATIZIT has relied on an open source model, supplying all interested parties with the relevant information to allow them to help develop their HDT turning process. Meanwhile, the tool manufacturer devoted its attention to its core business, developing a standard range of FreeTurn tools. Four indexable insert geometries were initially launched. This range included indexable inserts for machining steel/stainless steel

(2x roughing and 1x finishing, 3x roughing, symmetrical) and for aluminium (3 cutting edges, symmetrical). This initial range covers a number of applications. The holders are available with a range of different overhang lengths for each size and are available for the HSK-T and PSC machine interfaces. facility, and the flexibility and responsiveness of a small business. Located in Romeo, Michigan, Sharp Tooling Solutions implemented Global Shop Solutions ERP software in 2019 to improve their processes and simplify their manufacturing. ERP software can do amazing things for today’s manufacturers, including facilitating near-perfect inventory counts and tracking job costs with remarkable precision. Despite ERP’s ability to simplify manufacturing, it’s good business sense to wonder if there is a downside to investing in the software. Our customers will tell you

IMD – The Industry’s Most Extensive Industrial Publication

there isn’t. In fact, many say the only thing they would change would be making the decision to implement ERP sooner. What held them back? The stigma of implementation. The process takes much longer than expected, mistakes are made, and costs escalate. Our experience, based on more than four decades of successful ERP implementations, is that none of these problems have to happen. In fact, the process can be surprisingly painless if the project is structured and run by experienced experts such as the implementation specialists that Global Shop Solutions employs. In the last four years alone, we have successfully implemented our ERP software in more than 1,000 manufacturing facilities around the globe. To illustrate that ERP implementation can be done on time and within budget while achieving the planned results, we would like to relate the story of our recent implementation with Sharp Tooling Solutions, as told by Brett Cisneros, IT Manager at Sharp Tooling Solutions.

Moving into the 21st Century Sharp Tooling Solutions is a full-service supplier for the aerospace, automotive and defense industries, specializing in the design and construction of fixtures and tooling. Located just north of Detroit, Michigan they are AS9100 and ISO 9001 20015 certified and use the latest technology to manufacture high-quality products for customers worldwide. The custom tools made by the company’s roughly 100 employees take anywhere from two weeks to eight months to finish, with an average of 20+ tools being shipped each week. The company is most proud of their commitment to excellence, as exemplified by their 100% on-time delivery rate and quality product rate with Lockheed Martin. Sharp Tooling Solutions delivers a quality product on-time, every time to one of their most important customers – and you can too. Sharp Tooling was tired of operating with multiple systems that lacked continuity and inhibited corporate growth. The management team wanted to improve production processes and forecasting, and was searching for an ERP system that would combine their existing accounting-only system and separate 3rd-party time clock used to collect payroll hours. Global Shop Solutions provided a total system that matched with Sharp’s ‘tool-shop’ manufacturing practices, including robust inventory and scheduling modules that allowed for the elimination of redundant Excel spreadsheets. At this point, we’ll let Cisneros tell the story in his own words.

What motivated Sharp Tooling to install an ERP system in the business? What was the company feeling – and what were you feeling as the IT manager – when you decided to find an ERP system? From a business perspective, we needed to become more organized and efficient. In particular, we wanted to be able to put our manufacturing processes, accounting and logging payroll hours all under one user-friendly software package. Sharp has a history of continuous improvement. To help manage growth objectives, we searched for a system that would eliminate

inputting redundant static data, combine processes, and help us comply with AS9100 quality requirements for control plans. Global Shop Solutions not only fit perfectly with those objectives, but we were able to commonize standard forms for quoting, material purchasing and shipping.

What led to your decision to select Global Shop Solutions ERP software? We looked at several different ERP products, and Global Shop Solutions stood out from the rest, most notably in the area of customer service. We were impressed with the short wait times for service calls to be completed, and we liked the fact that 24-hour technical support is based in the U.S. Second, we found the software interface to be simple and easy to navigate. As a company, most employees learned to use the software in a short time. Next, we wanted to make sure the company was credible and trustworthy. I turned to Google, and all my searches returned positive results. I found video after video of customers similar to our business with positive feedback and experiences with Global Shop Solutions. A timeline on your website explained the history and growth of the company over 40 years, giving me confidence that we wouldn’t have to go through this process again. Finally, Global Shop Solutions ERP software comes with all the modules offered, whereas other ERP systems are purchased in a more a la carte manner. We wanted the peace of mind of knowing we wouldn’t have to be constantly adding modules and features every time we wanted to do something new.

Breaking Down a Successful Implementation You didn’t waste any time getting started. Describe how the implementation process went for Sharp Tooling Solutions. the software, and then set up a training schedule with the appropriate Consultants. We also set up a weekly phone call with the PM to monitor how the implementation was proceeding and resolve any issues. We attended your ERP Boot Camp in Texas, which is free for any customer. Touring the Global Shop Solutions facility, seeing the other customers you work with, and meeting with the owner and CEO (Dusty Alexander) convinced me we made the right choice. The first morning, Dusty welcomed the entire class to the training, and spoke eloquently of his company’s commitment to helping all of us have a successful implementation. I later found out Friday Features is one of his favorite parts of the week and is fully invested in the company that his father founded. Since then, we have developed a personal relationship with the group of people who helped us go live, and getting in touch with any of them is a breeze.

Were you satisfied with the system setup and support received from Global Shop Solutions during the implementation? Absolutely. The consultants were all very friendly and responsive to our needs. As long-term Global Shop Solutions employees, they brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the table to get us up and rolling. They also put the right people with the right experience in place based on our needs, which set us up for a successful implementation.

learned the importance of setting aside hours from our regular roles to ensure we stayed on schedule. I also wish I had taken advantage of Global Shop Solutions’ Real Time Implementation Portal a little more. They consist of detailed checklists of things to do that can be a little overwhelming when looking at them from the 10,000-foot level. However, they are very strategically organized, and a “must have” at Go Live. I’d also recommend getting the Shop Floor Data Collection stations out on the floor and everyone practicing as soon as the implementation plan is created. The employees that took it seriously during “pre Go Live” have had zero issues.

From an internal standpoint, what worked well for you during the implementation process?

Onward and Upward with Global Shop Solutions ERP

I realized early on that our employees had varying levels of computer experience. The best thing I did was spend some time creating Global Shop Solutions operating instructions for our employees. I created step-by-step PowerPoints for each module and each department so people would have a quick reference guide. Some people used them briefly and then took off on their own with minimal help. Others were still using them after two months, usually if they forgot a screen or were performing an infrequent task. The time I invested in learning Global Shop Solutions’ terminology and understanding the flow charts also paid off. Once I understood how jobs process from start to finish and how each module impacts the work flow, things really began to click for me. I’d recommend new users create a folder for all their uploads. Once you create and map the correct spreadsheets, static data can be uploaded very quickly. It’s easy to do once you see the process.

Now that you’ve been using the software a while, how has it changed your business?

In hindsight, what would you do different with your ERP implementation? I would put more emphasis on making sure everyone involved in the implementation process had flexible schedules. As time went by, we

28  |  IMD  |  Q2 2020

Since Go Live, we have slowly let go of our Excel spreadsheets. We’re not totally paperless, but we have cut way down on the amount we use and all employees see a paperless future. It surprised me a bit to discover how hard it can be to let go of old ways of working, even when we know they are holding us back. At times, we assumed the software couldn’t replace some of the documents we relied on. Turns out we just needed a little additional training to get the outputs we needed and understand some of the advanced features.

Now that your people are comfortable using Global Shop Solutions, what is Sharp Tooling Solutions doing to increase employees’ knowledge and skills regarding the software? We encourage all personnel to review their training documents. Also, every menu item has an extensive list of help that can be very useful. I personally attend Friday Features on a regular basis. These are live, one-hour online training classes that focus on a specific Global Shop Solutions function. It’s like getting free consulting! You can also access the archived Friday Features from previous years. When

you want to learn more about how to use the software, there is no shortage of resources to choose from.

Have you used any of the software’s customization features to make certain screens or programs align better with the way you do things?

What are you and others in the company feeling now that you have a reliable ERP system? We are in a growth trajectory, and with the Global Shop Solutions ERP system we realize simplified process improvements in quoting, purchasing and adherence to quality requirements. Across the board those improvements translate to greater customer satisfaction. From a personal standpoint, I love my job. I look forward to coming in to work every day and the company as a whole is moving in a very positive direction. Life is good!

Yes, we have customized the software. Internally we didn’t have the ability to do it ourselves, so we had Global Shop Solutions do a few things for us. For example, all our tooling is “one-off” custom tooling. During implementation, we scheduled a two-day onsite visit with Global Shop Solutions’ Continuous Improvement Team. Two employees came to our plant and created special programs for us to simplify and automate some daily tasks. And here’s another thing we really like about Global Shop Solutions; the programs the Continuous Improvement Team created for us – and those they create for other customers – become available in their online Application and Reports Center (ARC) store. Think of the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and all the free apps to download and try. ARC is the place to do that with Global Shop Solutions applications. They’re constantly adding new applications to make life easier for their customers.

Do you have any final recommendations for our readers? When building your “test” company code for training purposes, try and get as much realistic data as possible into the system. Use part numbers and work order numbers that your employees are used to seeing. Having a nice clean company test code helped our team transition smoothly into the live code at Go Live.

Combi-Ventilate – Turning One Ventilator Into Multiple Engineered Ventilation Stations BIG KAISER Releases Two New Chip Breaker Inserts For Finish Boring Long chips that are difficult to evacuate can lead to poor surface finishes when chips are dragged around by the tool. Insert life can be severely reduced if these chips are re-cut by the insert, and in smalldiameter applications, stringy chips can wrap around the tool to the point where a crash occurs. The exclusive FLM 3D chip-breaker design is used on PCD-tipped inserts ideal for finishing of aluminum components, where traditional flat-top inserts may produce a large continuous nest of chips that is difficult to remove from the bore and/or tool, even with high-pressure coolant.

The Irish manufacturer Combilift, best known for its range of space-saving forklifts and other handling solutions, has drawn on its expertise in engineering and software design to develop the Combi-Ventilate, a splitter device which turns one ventilator into multiple ventilation stations. Designed to address the requirements of medical professionals in the current Covid-19 emergency, the Combi-Ventilate was developed by a team of mechatronic and software engineers in the past five weeks with a unit currently undergoing laboratory tests with Ger Curley, Professor of Anesthesia and Critical Care at Royal College of Surgeon’s in Beaumont Hospital.

No Drip Spray Nozzles Sanitize, Clean and Cool While Conserving Liquid

HEIDENHAIN’s Rugged New GAGE-CHEK Now Available for Today’s Basic Metrology Applications

EXAIR’s new 1/2 NPT No Drip External Mix Air Atomizing Spray Nozzles work in the same way our standard atomizing nozzles do,but have the added benefit of positively stopping liquid flow when compressed air is shut off. External Mix Air Atomizing Spray Nozzles have the highest flow rates and allow the air and liquid flow to be adjusted independently. They can be used on liquids above 300 centipoise. The patented No Drip design requires no additional airline to control the No Drip feature. Like any of EXAIR’s spray nozzles, these are ideal for sanitization, decontamination, cooling, cleaning, dust mitigation, coating or humidification.

With its rugged industrial design, HEIDENHAIN’s new shop-floor hardened GAGE-CHEK 2000 evaluation electronics box is now available. Offered as a plug-and-play embedded system along with HEIDENHAIN-brand encoders including length gages, this solid metrology unit provides reliable basic measurement of 1D values. The new GAGE-CHEK 2000 is well suited for positioning tasks on many applications, from typical measuring rooms to a harsh production environment. Built on HEIDENHAIN’s next generation DRO software and hardware, the GAGE-CHEK 2000 offers a simpleto-view readout and up to 3-axis inputs.

The filter pak includes a galvanized steel housing with hinged and gasketed access door for filter change-out and molded composite resin inlet and outlet plenums with duct connection collars sized to meet specification. Both filters include a 30% pleated prefilter and can be paired together for applications that require particulate and fume removal.

L&L Special Furnace Co., Inc. has manufactured a fourth high-uniformity, pit-style furnace used for annealing. This furnace has been supplied to an industry leader that manufactures aerospace fasteners and supplies to a worldwide client base. The annealing process occurs when the parts are evenly heated to 1,400°F / 760°C and held for a predetermined amount of time. Temperature uniformity is critical to this process, and both ambient and load temperature must maintain ±10°F throughout the cycle. There is a five-horsepower, air-cooled turbo convection fan included to aid in temperature uniformity.

Mate Precision Tooling Announces Availability Of Custom Press Brake Tooling Mate Precision Tooling now offers modified standard and custom Press Brake Tools that supplement its extensive range of standard hardened and precision ground Press Brake Tools (PBT). While Mate’s standard tools fulfill the needs for most fabricating operations, bending variations may require modifying the angle of a standard punch or die a few degrees. Sometime the angle of the standard punch or die needs to be modified. This is easily accomplished because the induction hardening depth is 3mm-4mm (.118 in - .157 in). This allows material removal to modify an angle or change a radius without jeopardizing the structural integrity of the tool.
