Make a splash with designer bathroom sinks IN GENERAL, WE may think of sinks as functional and not necessarily a decor piece. The reality is that the sink is one of the few half-bath items that is both absolutely necessary but can be a focal design piece, as well. Forget about basic white square sinks and look at these items that can increase the style of your bathroom without requiring a full remodel or even a fancy granite counter to sit on. NL

EVANSTON:

wide variety of housing options available, a fabulous array of everyday amenities already on hand, and the relaxing convenience of not having to live in an active construction zone — Evanston’s appeal has never been more apparent. The community which began in 2007, by Qualico Communities in the northwest is approaching final build out and is down to its last few phases, and residents already enjoy the promised family-friendly lifestyle. “In Evanston, you can run to the Evanston Towne Centre to get eggs, bank, or pick up something for dinner. You can pick your children up from one of the two schools in the community, or they can even walk home,” says Cheryl Heilman, Qualico Communities’ marketing director. “Now that Evanston is almost built to completion everything you need is here.”

“Evanston allows families to connect. No long commutes to take your children out of the community for activities or playdates. You can get to know your neighbours and find a home within your budget.” There are 16 community parks and seven playgrounds with picnic areas and a sheltered gazebo dotting the neighbourhood. There are two schools in the community — a public elementary school and a Catholic K-9. Public transit is readily available, and the Evanston Towne Centre is already up and running and has easily become the social, cultural and commercial hub of the entire area. This quiet, suburban community in the northwest is where the scenic prairies meet an urban and sophisticated lifestyle. This Qualico Communities development has been one of the most popular residential destinations for families, young couples and downsizers with its lively mix of affordable and stylish housing options. “Evanston allows families to connect. No long commutes to take your children out of the community for activities or playdates. You can get to know your neighbours and find a home within your budget,” Heilman, says. Even if Evanston is approaching completion, there are still plenty of housing options available, including townhomes from $299,000s, duplexes from the $370,000s, laned homes from the $360,000s and front garage homes starting from the $470,000s. With a couple show homes opening early spring 2018, and the grand opening event featuring all nine new showhomes May 5. Buyers can see why they will want to call Evanston home. “There are a full variety of product options for potential buyers to choose from, with zero lot lines, to larger lots backing onto a dry pond the new lots release provide home options for everyone’s taste, lifestyle and budget.” Evanston was designed as a prairie-values environment and atmosphere where families can flourish. At every turn you’ll discover community planning that encourages people to come together, rather than keep them apart. There are fewer fences and more open spaces, back lanes and verandahs — meaning more opportunities for conversations and more to see. The 6.3-kilometres of walking and bike paths winding through the neighbourhood lays bare the natural beauty nearby, including the grasslands of Symons Valley and West Nose Creek areas. Relaxing, panoramic views of Country Hills Golf Course and the sandstone rocks bluffs give Evanston added flair and character. Heilman adds that people are coming to Evanston “to establish roots or to age in place” with buyers ranging from couples buying their first

FAST FACTS: single-family homes or multi-family condos, to families searching for their move-up family home all the way to downsizers and even senior assisted living. There is the nonprofit organization Covenant Care, and the Evanston Grande Village assisted living senior living facilities so families can stay near their elderly parents,” Heilman says. “They love the schools in the community, the established paths and parks along with great transit connections,” she says. The pristine, close-to-nature character of the community is also appealing as Evanston spans 660 acres with four lushly landscaped ponds, and numerous parks. There are currently seven playgrounds, and there are also 16 green spaces. The convenience afforded by the Evanston Towne Centre featuring Sobeys, RBC, Subway, a medical and dental clinic and many more stores and services further define the family-friendly environs. Architectural controls of the community include: Craftsman, Foursquare and Colonial, which were carefully selected because they provide details such as well articulated front entrances, interesting roof lines and traditional, rich colours. “There are no HOA fee in Evanston, but there is an established an active community association,” Heilman says.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY NuVista Homes’ Rosewood brings fab to family home WRITTEN BY

Pepper Rodriguez  n

THE QUEST TO designing the perfect family home never really stops at NuVista Homes. Their line of front-drive, move-up homes have the style, charm, practicality and affordability needed by any family home, but their flexibility is something that the renowned home builder is justifiably proud of. Take for example their popular show home, Rosewood, in Evanston. “Fabulous” comes to mind once you enter, everything about this front-drive, four bedroom home in this newly established community in the northwest is all about meeting the needs of the family. But the 2,238-square-foot home has even more to offer, says area sales manager, Susan Sandberg. “The Rosewood plan is derived from our best-selling model, the

Kirkwood, but has a smaller footprint so it can fit in more lots.” She adds that the beauty of the design — as do all NuVista homes — lies in its flexibility. “We can even put an extra bedroom and full bath on the main floor of the Rosewood, which is a design option that we’re seeing a lot more of these days,” she tells New Home Living. “We can personalize the home to suite the buyers’ needs.”

LEFT  The comfortable nature of Rosewood is perfectly captured in its down-to-earth great room. The centre fireplace and oversized windows bring a sunlit cheerfulness to the interior. It looks great as a sitting room where guests can have tea, and the nine-foot ceiling complements the inviting countenance.

STYLE

BELOW  The kitchen is a masterful display of form fulfilling function with a little bit of fancy thrown in. “It’s great for parties, the centre island with white quartz tops is a perfect setting to entertain and a brilliant workspace that provides a lot of flow,” Sandberg says. The cabinet molding brings the cabinetry to the ceiling for a more continuous look, wall appliances add to its seamless style.

BELOW  The dining room is as elegant as the rest of the home, and the oversized windows add to its picturesque nature. But the flexibility the Rosewood’s plan offers is its best feature. “We’ve been seeing more families bringing in their elderly parents to live with them, and we can accommodate this by adding an extra bedroom and full bath in the main floor in this plan,” Sandberg says.

»

NuVista’s ability to innovate and adapt to the needs of the market will be on display once again when they launch their newest plan in Redstone in May. The 2,553-squarefoot, four-bedroom Inverness promises to bring a new standard of comfort and design stylishness to the family home. The open concept design is augmented by a lounge, to add to the great room, dining room and kitchen. OUR NEW WEBSITE

The kitchen is the heart of the home, but The Clearwater’s is also its soul. The neoclassic design with highgloss cabinetry, Calcutta Bianca quartz on the centre island and full backsplash is perfectly contrasted by the wood veneer drawers and elaborate hood fan. THE BUNGALOW HAS long been a staple of the downsizer crowd, as its single-level living is a perfect solution for aging-in-place needs. But Baywest Homes sees huge potential in the bungalow as more than just a downsizer’s dream. Their new show home, The Clearwater, in Cranston’s Riverstone perfectly captures the bungalow in all its possibility as a retiree’s residence and a family home. Its total living space of 3,096 square-feet includes a 1,357 square-feet of developed lower level space that is at once stylishly functional and playfully fanciful. It is in fact a finalist is this year’s BILD Awards (formerly SAM Awards). It is especially well-suited to meet the needs of families with older children, who not only get to enjoy its glamorous entertaining style but also reap the benefits of living in the amenity-rich, family-friendly confines of Cranston’s Riverstone in the southeast. “Our mission to build homes crafted for life and designed award you got us thinking: It’s time to bring back the bungalow. A new style of bungalow, one that is beautifully appointed with optional developed lower levels,” says sales consultant Jodi Hodgson. “We believe The Clearwater captures this ideal.” The Clearwater starts from $926,000, including house, lot and GST. The show home itself is in the $1.1 million mark.

MIDDLE “Baywest has truly mastered the art of main floor living,” Hodgson says. The Clearwater main floor has the laundry, the magnificent kitchen with walk-in pantries and spa-level ensuites with walk-in closets. “You get access to everything you need on a daily basis to live with ease, or entertain on a while new level — the main level.”

LEFT A fabulous home is made all the more enchanting by the community its in, and The Clearwater wins in that regard, as well. Located in Cranston’s Riverstone estate section, it is just steps away from all the recreational opportunities the community offers. Take a relaxing walk by the riverside, or ride bike trails that will take you up to Cranston’s thriving commercial areas. “Families with an active lifestyle have it good here,” Hodgson says.

PAIRED FOR LIFE Shane Homes’ paired homes in Legacy blend function and flair

A F F O R D A B I L I T Y I S A L W A Y S the key factor in the sales of paired homes, but in Shane Homes’ case, it is the functionality and style of these contemporary duplexes that buyers have been attracted to. Shane Homes has just released five new paired home models exclusive to the popular southeast community of Legacy, and the two show homes that the award-winning builder chose to showcase the line brings the full potential of these homes to sharp focus. One of the show homes is the Eden II, and it is immediately apparent upon entering that the style, practicality and livability offered in it have been kicked up several notches. The sunlit, open concept main floor brings a sense of comfort and purpose; the galley style kitchen is a crowd pleaser and is loaded with entertainment potential. “People just love the openness of the layout, it has a great flow that just makes it a natural gathering space to entertain friends or even for just the daily family rituals,” says sales associate, Amelia Mcilmoyle. “The big windows in the front and in the back offer so much natural light in the home that I like to say that the sense of optimism and energy they create is standard,” she adds. Shane Homes’ paired home models in Legacy range from 1,394 to 1,521 square-feet and start from $377,000, including GST and the detached double-garage. “That’s a big standard for a lot of our buyers,” she says. The Eden II show home is 1,518 square-feet and starts from $385,000.

POWDER ROOM POWER Bring your designs full measure on half-baths n   WRITTEN BY

O

SELECT PLUMBING FIXTURES TO IMPRESS. With so many options available, it is imperative to make your selection in the early stages of the build process, as this will dictate where the plumbing rough-ins need to be. From tankless toilets to pedestal sinks, wall faucets and vessel sinks, your plumber will need to run the proper lines. High tech toilets are making their way to the

ccupying so little space yet having some of the biggest aesthetic impact in the home, the powder room is definitely a favourite for the design imagination. With a bit of thought, inspiration and attention to detail, this space that your guests tend to see the most has plenty of potential to wow. If you are building new or are thinking of renovating, consider these key elements for the half-bath/powder room:

Christina Loc

North American market stronger than ever so look out for toilets with heated seating, built-in bidets and dryer options. Matte gold finishes and mixing metals continue to be strong in 2018 with matte black faucets gaining traction too. VANITY WITH STYLE. Floating vanities with or without storage will be strong this year. They make a space light, airy and are simply cool-looking and impressive. Pedestals remain great choices for smaller areas and come in a wide range of traditional to modern pieces. A word of caution on pedestal sinks: though they are sleek and stylish, they don’t offer storage space, so you will need accompanying pieces like baskets and bins to provide the functionality. On the other hand, the furniture-like vanity will continue to appeal as it’s practical for storage and is timeless. IT’S THICK OR THIN WITH COUNTERTOPS. If your vanity style requires a counter top, you have a plethora of choices from granite, marble, man-made stone popularly known as quartz, concrete and glass to name a few. Play with the thickness of your countertop to draw attention; go three inches thick or 3/4 inches thin. Another trending countertop material is a live-edge slab of wood. Pair it with a concrete vessel bowl and the result will be stunning. Organic looking materials in warm neutral tones are so welcoming. Or, play with colour on your countertops. Glass can be custom painted to any colour and there are a lot of neutral and vibrant colours to select from with quartz by Caesarstone. LIGHT IT UP. Lighting can really change the look and feel of a powder room. Sticking to where the electrical box is traditionally wired above the sink on the wall, there are many beautiful vanity lights to choose from. But, if you want to take it up a notch, hang a chandelier in the middle of the room, use trendy wall sconces, drop one or two pendants over your sink area or add LED strip lighting behind a floating mirror and under a vanity, an instant ambience changer. Use multi-colour LED strips to instantly change the hue of your room. When planning for lighting, ensure proper wiring is roughed-in.

If on a budget but in need of that extra bit of detail, carrying a frameless mirror all the way to the ceiling will make your powder room feel fuller, taller and bigger. Banjo arms have been a faux-pas in recent years, but they’re a great way to have that extra bit of counter space while allowing you to carry the mirror across the full width of the wall, making your space appear larger. I know, designers reading this are cringing, but just hear me out: imagine a full wall of decorative cement tile with a floating back-lit mirror running across the width of it with a simple clean line rift oak floating vanity, and bam! A beautiful banjo armed slab of marble on top! If you’re not sold on the banjo arm, ask your contractor not to install the standard mirror so you can purchase a decorative one. Cleanliness, attention to detail and craftsmanship are on full and quick scrutiny so make sure to dust those baseboards! BIKE CITY Calgary’s evolving bicycle culture n   STORY AND PHOTOS BY

Richard White

C

algary’s relationship with bicycles and bike lanes has always been one of the love-hate kind. One thing is certain; bike culture in the city is growing. Given that spring is in the air, which means many of us will be starting to think about getting out and cycling more, I thought it would be interesting to check in with Tom Thivener, Calgary’s Cycling Co-ordinator, to get an update on how Calgary is doing in its quest to create am more cycling friendly city. I emailed him a few questions and here are his responses.

What have been the key accomplishment to date with respect to to cycling infrastructure? Calgary should be very proud of the off-street pathway network. The river path network and connections into some of the communities are very good. It is a blessing to have so many bridges across the rivers. Rivers can be a barrier to cycling, but clearly Calgarians figured out a long time ago bridges can be a true asset to the city. The downtown cycle track network has proven, in a short amount of time to be a huge success in extending the protection and comfort of the pathway network into the heart of the downtown and Beltline, through

on-street in the form of separated bike lanes. People of all ages and abilities bicycle, roller blade and skate board on them. It’s great to see.

What have been the biggest disappointments? The most disappointing piece of infrastructure in Calgary is the maze gates in many suburban communities. They usually show up on walkways between two homes on a corridor that goes to a park, an LRT station or university campus. These corridors are a perfect place to walk or bike to destinations except for the fact that a set of two strategically placed steel gates are there to keep cyclists from flying down them. The placement of these gates makes it next to impossible to get a bike with a trailer, wheel chair or a large stroller through them. We have so many of them across the city but we

have identified a few locations to be retrofitted with simpler treatments this summer as part of the Spot Improvement Program I oversee.

What have been the surprises? The biggest surprise is the level of interest in Bike Share in Calgary. Several companies have approached The City to discuss launching bike share soon here. The typical model is very similar to Car2Go in that members can find a bike through a smart phone app and GPS technology. Seattle, in a short amount of time has gone from having zero bicycles to 9,000 bicycles. And with that they are giving citizens and visitors a healthy, inexpensive and fast way to get around town, especially trips under five kilometres. If one of the companies doesn’t launch this summer, I anticipate next summer for sure. OUR NEW WEBSITE

Where does Calgary rank as a cycling city in Canada? North America? In the USA, the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) organization has a thorough application and review process that has ranked over 400 cities in terms of bike friendliness. They focus on the 5 E’s (engineering, evaluation, education, encouragement and enforcement), arguing that you need to be strong in all these areas to be truly bike friendly. An organization in Ontario has adopted this model to rank cities there, but we don’t have similar national organization in Canada.

people cycling tend to regulate themselves and even dismount when it gets too busy, like during the summer months. What are the myths/misconceptions Calgarians have about cycling in Calgary? Probably that bike infrastructure is expensive. The City spent nearly $2 million to upgrade a really deficient pedestrian underpass in the community of Bowness this summer. We managed to double the width for people walking and biking and improved the transitions to and from the roadway. The work was nothing flashy but residents and people traveling through Bowness will get to enjoy the improvement every day for the next 100 years or so. $2 million sounds expensive but that won’t even buy you one C-Train car.

But having been through the LAB process when I worked in Tucson, I’d say we’re approaching their level of bike friendliness, which is Gold rated. While there is a lot to be proud of in Calgary, there is still a lot of work remaining, to graduate to Platinum or Diamond status.

What new cycling infrastructure can Calgarians look forward to this summer? We have three corridors slated to get Complete Street improvements to them this summer. This includes bike lanes or cycle tracks, continuous sidewalks, traffic calming treatments, improved pedestrian crossings and intersection improvements for all modes of traffic. In Midnapore, Midlake Boulevard S.E. has been identified for improvements. While I don’t expect many people to bike to downtown from there, there are lots of local destinations including schools, shopping centers, lakes and Fish Creek park nearby. In Southview and Forest Lawn/Heights, 19 Avenue S.E. has been identified for similar improvements in conjunction with the Bus Rapid Transit project happening on International Avenue. This project will connect to a new bridge with a pathway that will connect with Inglewood over Deerfoot Trail. And in Mission/Beltline 2 Street S.W. has been identified for some improvements. We still have several gaps in the network in the Centre City but this project will finally connect people from Elbow River Path into the Centre City network. Can you comment on how the pilot project of having cyclist use Stephen Avenue has been going? The pilot to allow cyclists during the day on Stephen Avenue was approved by Council in December 2016. It is now permanent that cycling is allowed all day and in both directions on Stephen Avenue. People cycling share the space with people walking during the day and at night share the street with taxis and other vehicles. We haven’t seen any real problems with adding cycling there. As we have seen in other cities in Europe and Asia

APRIL 2018

Do we know how many Calgarians cycle year-round today as compared to five years ago?

We have seen a lot of growth in the last five years in terms of ridership. Since the Cycling Strategy was approved in 2011, we have installed or improved 87 kilometres of bikeway and in turn we have doubled the number of people cycling. We have a couple sources for this data. Calgary’s Civic Census asks the question about how people get to work and that result went from just under one percent in 2011 to just under two in 2016. Ever year in May, the transportation Department monitors all traffic entering and exiting downtown. The portion of trips by bike has risen from just under two per cent in 2010 to just under four per cent in 2017. Whether you think this is a lot or a little, there are still several thousand Calgarians who bike, many year round. NL

THE HOUSING PICTURE Seeing the housing market through the CMHC’s lens ONE OF THE greatest resources we have out there about the real estate industry is Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. The federal agency consistently puts out reports, statistics and surveys that really give the industry and consumers a comprehensive feel about what’s taking place. Besides its regular data on new home construction and the resale and rental markets, CMHC also has some very interesting reports that come out on a regular basis that delve into the housing market at a much deeper level than anyone else. Take for example the Housing Market Assessment that was released to the public in the first quarter of this year. The report identifies locations in which there are heightened vulnerabilities to housing market instability from the level of house prices and/or from factors that are known to influence house prices. It looks at four categories — overheating, price acceleration, overbuilding and overevaluation — rating the degree of vulnerability in each area as low, medium or high. Here is what it had to say about Calgary: “The HMA framework detected a moderate degree of vulnerability in the Calgary housing market. House prices of repeat sales in the third quarter of 2017 were relatively stable compared to the previous quarter, with year-over-year gains slightly above the rate of inflation. Growth in employment and in the young adult population have helped support housing demand and price levels in Calgary. While there was low evidence of overheating, price acceleration, and overvaluation, there continues to be imbalances in the area of overbuilding. Apartment rental vacancy rates, and multiple new OUR NEW WEBSITE

home inventories remain at elevated levels.” The agency rated the Calgary census metropolitan area as a low risk in overheating, price acceleration and overvaluation but high in overbuilding. The overall assessment was moderate. For comparison purposes, high degrees of vulnerability were found in Victoria, Vancouver, Hamilton and Toronto.

HOUSING STARTS New home construction in the Calgary region began with a bang in 2018. CMHC stats show that in January total housing starts for the Calgary census metropolitan area of 651 were 53 per cent higher than January 2017. The single-detached market rose by 47 per cent to 325 units while all other housing types was up by 59 per cent to 326 units.

NEW HOUSING PRICE INDEX In December, “builders in Calgary (-0.2 per cent) reported the largest new house price decline, linking it to weak market conditions and lower negotiated selling prices,” said Statistics Canada in its monthly report about markets across the country. On a year-over-year basis, prices in the Calgary region were up 0.3 per cent.

CALGARYHOMELIVING.COM

INVESTMENT IN NEW HOUSING CONSTRUCTION StatsCan also produced some interesting data for December on the homebuilding industry in Alberta. Investment in new housing construction for the province rose from $574.3 million in December 2016 to $664.6 million in December 2017. NL This article was shortened for space considerations. Parks of Harvest Hills opens CEDARGLEN HOMES OPENS three new show homes in the new community of Parks of Harvest Hills, including the new wide-shallow model — The Monarch — that brings a bedroom-full bath suite on the main floor. The Monarch is a 2,607-square-foot model that makes its debut in The Parks of Harvest Hills. This well-designed home offers a multitude of interior design options for all. With the option of converting the main floor den to a bedroom with an ensuite, this home is ideal for multi-generational living. That gives it a total of five bedrooms including the master bedroom and three other bedrooms upstairs. “It’s the perfect home for large, expanded families or even to keep as a spare bedroom for guests,” says Allison Harvie, sales and marketing manager at Cedarglen Homes. The 2,255-square-foot Carbon 2 and the 2,130-squarefoot Huxley three-bedroom plan models round out the first show

home parade in this highly anticipated community in north Calgary off Country Hills Boulevard, just west of Deerfoot Trail. The opening topped a fantastic month for the veteran builder who also took home Builder of Choice Award at the recent 2018 HOME Awards night presented by CustomerInsight. Cedarglen tied with Homes by Avi for the award that rates customer experience, as well as trade partners and employees. Harvie also won Industry Ambassador of

the Year Award during the same gala night for demonstrating leadership and initiative within the area of customer experience. Parks of Harvest Hills is touted to be Cedarglen’s most ambitious development yet. Cedarglen Homes and their multi-family division Cedarglen Living are the exclusive builders in this 65-acre residential community. On offer are apartment condos from the $190,000s, townhomes from the $300,000s and single-family homes will be from the $590,000s.

Homes by Avi opens new laned show homes in Sunset Ridge of the newest, most innovative laned homes from the multi-award-winning builder’s repertoire, open on March 17. And with Homes By Avi laned home prices in Sunset Ridge starting from the $340,000s — including house, lot, GST and detached garage — that has to be one of the best deals in town. “These aren’t postage stamp sized lots

And like all Homes by Avi products, buyers can mix and match upper and main floor designs to fit their lifestyle needs. It was perfect timing for the Sunset Ridge openings, as they came just as Homes by Avi won big at the 8th annual Home Owner Mark of Excellence (H.O.M.E.) Awards. Both single-family and multi-family divisions of the well-respected builder took home Builder of Choice awards that recognize customer service. The Home Owner Mark of Excellence (H.O.M.E.) is a third-party certification program for new home builders who achieve a superior rating for customer satisfaction, as rated by their customers.

Jayman team wins Trailblazer award

NuVista gets set to open new Redstone show home

JAYMAN BUILT HAS been recognized with the Trailblazer Award from the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). The Trailblazer Award recognizes the innovations and achievements in safety of companies from the Alberta construction industry, along with their contributions to the local communities in the region. Jayman is a leader in many aspects of the residential construction industry in safety Initiatives and upholding site standards to protect the trades, as well as members of the public. This achievement is in large part due to Trevor Klein, Jayman BUILT Health & Safety Auditor, who is actively involved in many local and provincial safety programs, and as Chairman of several construction safety committees. Klein received the award, with Jayman BUILT safety team member Brittny Kehoe. He says the award is a confirmation of his core belief in the safety standards he has put in place since starting work here six years ago. “This award lets me know that we’re on the right path,” he tells Around Town. But he says the real reward is having no one get hurt while doing their job. “We’re building homes, and no home really should have the stigma of having someone gets hurt — or worse, die — in the course of building Trevor Klein and Brittny Kehoe it,” he says.

NUVISTA HOMES WANTS readers to keep eyes peeled for their newest show home, The Inverness, in the popular northeast community of Redstone. The Inverness will have four bedrooms and twoand-a-half baths as a standard, perfect for big families. It will also have a spacious kitchen with large island and walk-through pantry and a main floor lounge. SPRINGTIME IN HARMONY Growth buds in award-winning lake community AFTER ENDURING A brutal winter, record-breaking in some aspects, it’s nice to feel spring may just have arrived, bringing with it a sense of newness. Spring also brings a more robust residential construction scene — and the reigning Calgary BILD New Community of the Year and Community of the Year, Calgary Region — is most definitely active. Harmony, located in Springbank and the vision of Bordeaux Properties and Qualico Communities, has caught the interest of Calgarians looking for a country-residential setting to lay down roots. And to this end, spring will mean an uptick in show home viewings and a continuation of the growth of this appealing community. “This spring we continue selling from phases two and three which includes our Aspen Collection of rear-laned homes and the Tamarack Collection of estate homes and Villas,” says Ryan Hall, vice-president of sales and communications for Bordeaux Properties. He adds that Homes by Avi will launch a Children’s Hospital Home Lottery show home in May, and that design and planning of amenities infrastructure will get under way. Come fall, though, a new Aspen show home parade will be launched in the third phase of development with models from Baywest Homes, Broadview Homes, and Sterling Homes. Other builders active in separate collections throughout the community are Homes by Avi, NuVista, and Augusta. Much anticipated since the initial launch of showhomes in 2016, Harmony builders have sold more than 150 homes — and there

54 | NE W HOME LIVING

are nearly 70 families now calling the upscale community home. So what’s the attraction, what is it that lures folks to the other side of Calgary’s western boundary? Well, says Hall, Harmony is home to the 140-acre Harmony Lake, the first lake community in Springbank; then there is the vision of what the future holds in terms of amenities, features, services, employment campuses, a waterfront village with retail and commercial elements, wellness centre, golf at the Mickelson National Golf Club of Canada, and environmental stewardship. “Harmony has a very detailed plan that incorporates holistic components that focus on live, work, play, create, connect, nourish, and sustain. Residents who are the early adopters see the value of this entire lifestyle and have decided to be a part of the growth and get in early,” says Hall. Then there are the homes themselves showing off Arts and Crafts, Prairie, French Country, and Contemporary architectural interpretations in three distinct phases. The Aspen Collection of single-family homes is priced from $700,000; the Tamarack Collection of county estate homes begins at $1 million; and Wildflowers’ bungalow villas start at about $799,900. Still to come are townhomes in the Birch Collection. As for who the buyers are, Hall points to a broad overview. “It’s been an amazing experience seeing

the purchasers. It’s mostly young families — parents in their 30s, professionals in oil and gas and other sectors with young children. Also have had significant interest from their grandparents who are retirees wanting to be close to their grandchildren, Overall, Harmony has been designed as a generational community, and the housing products allow for that,” he says. For more information on Harmony, visit liveatharmony.ca, or visit the showhomes and discovery centre open from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. weekends and holidays, but closed Fridays. To get to the showhomes and Discovery centre, from westbound TransCanada Highway take exit 169 to Range Road 33. Then take Township Road 250 to the Harmony entrance. NL
