A cornucopia of culture by Vern May There was no mystery to Sunday’s patrons on hand in the Victoria Park bowl why the Souris Multicultural Festival was recently nominated as an event of the year by Tourism Westman. The audience was treated to a spectacular demonstration of talent in brilliant colours, representing international customs from
around the globe. Multicultural Association Chair, Lynne Mackay arranged for a diverse and unique line-up of acts which grabbed the crowd’s attention from the opening act to the grand finale. The show opened with a hypnotic Peruvian belly dancer and included the popular Chinese dragon dance, vocal performances
by Davi - an international pop recording star, an interactive Mexican salsa dance which included audience participation, Scottish dancers, and a dynamic, heart-pounding number performed by the Souris Filipino dancers. With a seven act line up, the no show of one of the slated performers could have impacted the flow of the event but the
coordination of talent as well as some added performances by the crowdpleasing “Sensacion Internationale”, contributed to the show’s success. The line up was steady and enthusiastic to sample the delicacies in the food tent. Four hundred plates were served up in two hours as guests sampled authentic recipes not commonly found on local
menus. This weekend marked the sixth year for the summer event, which continues to grow both in popularity and reputation. With guests visiting from as far away as Winnipeg and Thompson, as well as a few international visitors enjoying their first trip to Canada this summer. Organizers were quick to acknowledge the enthu-
siasm of their volunteers, ongoing support from sponsors, and interest from available talent as the key factors for their success. However, a tip of the hat needs also to be extended to the Committee themselves, a small but dynamic group that ensure the Festival continues to eclipse their previous efforts with each passing year.

What’s the big Idea-nna? by Darci Semeschuk Got a plan? Don’t know how to execute it? Idea-nna’s Designs could be the next call you make. Deanna Way has put her years of organizing, planning and inspiring, along with her creativity, to good use and has opened Ideanna’s Designs. “Idea-nna’s Designs is my passion to creatively transform and create items, projects and events into things of beauty, ” Way explained. “I look forward to sharing my “Idea-nna’s with everyone.” In fact Way, who is an early childhood education instructor at Assiniboine Community College says she has always had to be creative and stretch the budget. Whether it’s an old frame, chair, window frame or door, she can refresh it and turn it into something beautiful. “I spend a lot of time going to yard sales and scouring the ads on ebrandon looking for items that I can re-purpose,” she explained. “Once I find something, my creative side takes
over and the outcome is usually great. From there if it hasn’t been commissioned by someone, then I put it up for sale on my Facebook page.” Since she launched her Facebook page July 1, the number of members has steadily climbed to 134. Those are people who are looking for something special for a gift or an item for a certain spot in their home or maybe want to hire Way to organize a space. There isn’t anything that way can’t put a creative touch to. As far as organizing, Way says she can do anything from spaces, closets, indoor areas and outdoor areas. She will also plan events. You just give her the basic information and she’ll turn around with a plan. The fee structure is based on the job but estimates are free. The most recent Ideanna’s Design project was the Timeless Market in Souris, the second of which will be held August 20. Way’s business card states: Create, Consult, Design, Organize, Plan,
Inspire. She indeed does all of this and has so for years. When someone told her that she should be charging for these
services, she decided to give it a go. While she has no plans to stop instructing, this will be an enjoyable sideline. As
Way says, “There is nothing you can’t sell. It’s just about having the right market.” Way can be reached
through her Facebook page, Idea-nna’s Designs or by phone at 204-7406005. Give her a call and be inspired!
Idea-nna’s Designs - an outlet for creativity Deanna Way has always had a flair for style and creativity. With her new venture, Idea-nnaʼs Designs, she can now offer her ideas to the public. A celebration of cultures The 6th annual Multicultural Festival was held in Souris August 16. It was a melting pot of diversity with celebrations of culture from the Philippines, Mexico, Ukraine, Scotland and England. In addition to music and traditional dance, there was a festival of food for purchase. PHOTOS/DEBBIE BUTLER

Day of Service benefits local organizations by Darci Semeschuk Contributing to their home town is something that Souris RBC staff members are proud to do. The RBC Day of Service Grant allows them the opportunity to take that contribution to the next level. Each RBC Day of Service Grant provides $1,000 per RBC employee team project, up to $5,000 per organization per calendar year. “Our staff is always glad to take part and help in any way we can,” stated RBC Manager, Linda Swaenepoel. “This is a great way to give
back to the community and build team spirit and engage others at the same time.” In total, the Souris RBC Marketplace, which includes Souris, Wawanesa and Glenboro, has given $17,000 in grant money to the area. In Souris alone, over $11,000 has been donated. “Our local staff has worked at a number of Souris events,” remarked Swaenepoel. “We plan to continue to help wherever we can and with the Day of Service Grant, we will support local projects that are in need
of funding.” Some of the Souris projects Swaenepoel is referring to include the Souris Survivor Spiel, Westman Regional Musical Outreach Program, Souris Skatepark, Andrew Dunn Walk, Hillcrest Museum, and Souris Golf Course. The next project on schedule for the Souris RBC staff is the Scarecrow Days kick off barbecue on September 25. This is a project that the staff in Souris has done for many years and it is always a great way to kick off a big weekend in Souris.

Fire hydrant flushing also provides the Fire and Water Departments with valuable information. Will Hydrant Flushing Affect Your Water? During the flushing process, you may experience some water discoloration, especially when work is being done in your immediate neighborhood. Once the hydrant flushing is complete, the water quality will improve. What Precautions Should You Take? Before doing laundry or other projects that may suffer from discolored water, make sure the water is running clear. Keep a pitcher of clean water in the refrigerator.

Maguire officially registered as candidate Westman Conservatives continue to work hard and spread positive vision Brandon, MB - Larry Maguire, the Conservative Candidate for BrandonSouris, announced he is the first officially registered candidate with Elections Canada. After gathering more than three times the necessary signatures, he visited Elections Canada to file his papers and is now confirmed as a candidate for the 2015 General Election. Maguire also continued to work hard in the second week of the campaign and has already visited dozens of communities and neighbourhoods to share his positive vision to grow Westman’s economy and keep taxes low. “Our positive message to grow our local economy, and improve our quality of life is being warmly received across Westman,” said Maguire. “Recent announcements such as expanding and extending the Apprenticeship Job
Creation Tax Credit is being welcomed by Westman small business owners. They are pleased that a re-elected Conservative Government will remain as focused as ever on creating new high-paying jobs.” Since elected in November 2013, Maguire has worked closely with community leaders and small business owners to introduce the necessary reforms to close the skills gap. Hiring employees with the right skill-set and education qualifications has been a challenge for many small business owners. To close the skills gap, Maguire has announced federal funding for Assiniboine Community College to assist in the purchase of a new mobile simulation lab. The lab will help to meet the growing demand in the energy and construction sectors. He has also recently announced federal funding that will go towards the acquisition of equipment for their agricultural technician program.
Brandon University also received federal funding in 2015, to create an Innovation Zone. This will allow Westman entrepreneurs and innovators to produce prototypes. The funding will be used to purchase 3D printing equipment and the software and computers to operate the machine. Through this investment, users will be able to develop product concepts, create prototypes, and bring news products to market. “Throughout this campaign I will emphasize the need for further investments that will lead to the creation of new high-paying jobs,” said Maguire. “I pledge to work alongside stakeholders and community leaders to connect Westman residents with available jobs through targeted measures.” Since 2006, the Government of Canada has supported business and industry associations to work alongside postsecondary education institutions to better align their

My travels in Japan by Emily Simon This past July, I was awarded the opportunity to travel to Japan with the York Benimaru Foundation and Manitoba 4-H. Over a 16 day period our little group of 10 delegates and two chaperones travelled around the beautiful country of Japan and got the experience of a lifetime. The first week we were there, we toured as a group and saw various sights like Tokyo Disney, the Tsukiji fish market, and the Tokyo Skytree. We also spent a night in a small ancient village called Ohuchijuku that was nestled up in a moun-

Murder returns, as I have two books for you to consider this week - The Interpretation of Murder by Jed Rubenfeld and The Sandman by Lars Kepler. For me the less successful of the two was The Interpretation of Murder. The murder here is secondary, as the author’s main focus is Sigmund Freud’s 1909 trip to New York city. Many authors base their books on their particular hobbies - quilting, baking, etc. and for many this is successful. Not so here. Jeb Rubenfeld took degrees in psychology and literature and seems
tain range. It had the most breathtaking view I had ever witnessed and I have experienced a lot of beautiful views. This one took the cake! After our first week, we split up and went to live the traditional Japanese lifestyle. My family was made up of a grandmother, grandfather, mother, father, and 17-year-old twin girls. The Monday morning was an early start as wake up was 6:00 a.m. I slowly dragged myself out of bed and got ready for the long day that was ahead of me. School started at 8:00 a.m. and it consisted of classes like
Mathematics, Phys. Ed, Japanese History and English (thank goodness for that class because I could talk to the teacher). Did I mention that I had to wear a uniform? That week just flew by and before I knew it, it was over. On the Friday night my new friends planned a “see you later” party because then I have to come back and see them at some point. Countless tears fell when the night was through, not a dry eye in the room. Sunday was my last day with my family as we made the two hour drive to the
Sayonara party in Koryiama. The ceremony was nice and the Manitoba delegates did a “Manitoban” presentation where we sang songs around a fake campfire and did the Boot Scoot’n Boogie line dance for the crowd of people. All and all, it was a good time. I hope to travel back to this beautiful country. Thank you a million times over to the York Benimaru Foundation and Manitoba 4-H Council for allowing me to have this opportunity. I will never forget the friends I’ve made and the sights I’ve seen.
to be trying to incorporate everything he learned into this story. Hence we have many, prolonged discussions of both Freudian psychology and Hamlet’s soliloquy (‘to be or not to be’). In theory the book is about the murder of a young socialite, which occurs on the day Freud arrives in NYC. The next morning an almost identical attempt is made on a second heiress and the story takes off from there. Or should have. The second victim, though alive, has lost all memory of the event and a young psychologist in Freud’s entourage is brought in to attempt to ‘release’ these memories and thus solve the murder. There are more plot twists than one story can possibly handle, many long, and mind-
numbing discussions completely irrelevant to the tale, and a solution to the crime which is both convoluted and unbelievable. While undoubtedly true that one ought to write what one knows, this book amply demonstrates that this can be taken too far. By contrast, The Sandman kept me interested from start to finish. It begins with an emaciated young man stumbling along a railway track, into the path of an oncoming train. It turns out this young man, Mikael, has been ‘dead’ for over seven years - the victim, it was thought, of a serial murderer who is not only behind bars but in total isolation in a forensic psychiatric facility. Obviously not dead, it appears Mikael has been held captive all that while, along with his sister and who knows how many of the murderer’s other victims. But if the ‘murderer’ is behind bars, who has been holding the young man captive all this time? Desperately ill from Legionnaires disease, all Mikael can tell investiga-
tors is that his captor was The Sandman, a person he never saw, since he was held in complete darkness. Could this be the elusive accomplice, the existence of whom Detective Inspector Linna always suspected but the authorities dismissed? Mikael escaped but his sister was left behind, and if she too is ill, then she must be found quickly if she is to survive. But how do you find a ‘dead’ person, and, moreover, one whose ‘killer’ refuses to speak? The book is suspenseful and the ending does not disappoint. Hours: Closed Sunday and Monday, Closed; Tuesday, 12:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m.
