Grade 7 & 8 awards presented at Souris School
by Kaitlyn Fraser The first ever Tany Ewing Clinic and Ladies Retreat weekend was held at Fraser Farms of Souris, June 19 - 21. Hosted by Dianna Fraser and her family at their farm on the Souris River, the clinic brought new and old members of the Eventing sport, many of whom compete at Willville Horse Trials, also hosted by Dianna. Twenty riders from across the provinces brought their horses to Souris to learn and improve with the dignified coach, as well to participate in the weekend’s other activities. Clinician Tany Ewing is a level 3 Equine Canada coach from Quebec, and a part of the National Eventing selection team. She brought with her a copious amount of knowledge and helped the clinic’s participants improve their skills, which they can carry forward in competition. The participants enjoyed the many activities such as morning yoga class by Kim Harbicht-Sczesny and onsite massages by Roxanne Scraba. As well, there was a wine and cheese welcome on the first evening and a cooking class taught by Chef Tim Taylor. The Woodfire Deli’s own Buffy Dawson and head Chef Taylor, along with help from the exceptional Woodfire staff prepared an exquisite four-course meal to finish out the funfilled weekend. After plenty of positive feed back, the Frasers hope to carry forward a new tradition.

Perhaps they’ve come to explore the prairie for artifacts which pre-date European settlement of the western plains. For some, their voyage of discovery might be a more personal sojourn into their own ancestry. Most of us pass right by these significant sites, unaware of their importance. For instance, some one standing at the entrance to the Souris golf course gazing southwest would find themselves within 200 yards of the very home where the first by Vern May blueprint for the modern helicopter was drafted. That wasn’t the only invention to be patented by William Hull while he lived in Souris either. Yet, little of our documented history celebrates Mr. Hull, who is interred at our local cemetery. It is important that we don’t lose our history as a dry, dusty timeline, peppered with the banality of During my career, I was always thrilled to visit events and incidents that seem almost abstract to us the arenas which were the site of wrestling’s his - now. There was so much history in Regina’s Exhibition Auditorium, a weekly stop for Stampede Wrestling for some 30 years that I couldn’t help but get caught up in the nostalgia. Standing in the mid dle of the ring, I was overcome with the knowledge that some of the greatest legends in the sport had stood in this very spot. Beautification news submitted When you read this, plant boxes will all be planted, flower beds resplendent with fresh flowers, and the baskets hung. There are some new planters this summer. Check out both ends of the swinging bridge. We are so grateful to all the volunteers who planted planters and flower beds. Please feel free to pull any weeds you see in the planters around town as you walk by. We appreciate so much the people from the school and others who showed up to help put the heavy baskets up on the poles. That is such a big job but many hands did the task quickly. Ken Sparrow is the flower watering man this summer. Please say hello when you see him in the streets with the water truck. Check out the new peacock benches. They were purchased from the proceeds of the Souris Flood book put together by some thoughtful young women in our community. One bench is located on the island, the other is on Crescent Avenue beside the Fellowship Beautifying the Town, one flower a time! Club. On Friday, June 19, Grade 7 and 8 students from Mrs. Sobryʼs Make Change class at Souris School There is another new feature this summer. Library Corner By Alexis MacLean
I recently saw a quote, unattributed, which struck a chord in me, to whit, “The problem with new books is that they keep you from reading the old ones.” Too true. This week I have gone back a bit to read some books which, if not actually ‘old,’ are at least a bit older than those I normally review. The Pecan Man is a small work by Cassie Dandridge Selleck. It has been described as ‘a cross between To Kill a Mockingbird and The Help,’ and I can see why. The writing is certainly not on par with either of those books, but the basic themes reverberate. Set in the South, it centers on a widow, her maid of many years, and an elderly and homeless black man she hires to do her yardwork. The rape of a young black
girl and the murder of a young white boy set in motion actions and lies which, though designed to protect the innocent, have unforeseen and significant consequences for them all. The Cellist of Sarajevo, by Steven Galloway, is an older book, published in 2009, but it is definitely one worth reading if you have not already done so. It is loosely based on a real incident, and two real characters. During the long and vicious siege of Sarajevo, a bomb landed in a crowded marketplace and killed 22 people. The principal cellist of the Sarajevo Symphonic Orchestra, left without a job when the Opera Hall was bombed, saw this from his apartment window. Every day thereafter, for 22 days, the cellist carried his cello down into the bombed-out square and, heedless of all danger, played Albioni’s Adagio – one performance for each person killed. All of that is true. This forms the backdrop to the stories of three other people:
Arrow, the sniper charged with keeping the cellist safe from the gunman sent by the opposition to kill him; Kenan, who must brave the danger of snipers and bombs to obtain water for his family; and Dragan, who managed to get his family out of the city to safety, but who is left now to navigate the streets through the bombs and bullets, while remembering what the city once was, and wondering how it can ever be repaired. A good and thought provoking tale, this book led me to pick up Galloway’s newest novel, The Confabulist. Nothing at all like and not up to the quality of The Cellist, The Confabulist was still enjoyable. It follows the stories of two men - Harry Houdini and Martin Strauss, the man who killed him. As with all such books based on real people, there is a danger of accepting most of this story as true – but it is
not. It is fiction, after all, and, moreover, is told by Martin –a man who has been diagnosed with a degenerative neural condition which makes his memories unreliable. While the story switches time frames and subjects, this wasn’t as jarring as is all too often the case. Instead, the various strands are woven together fairly seamlessly and although it ultimately becomes rather unrealistic, it remains interesting to the end. It does seem to lose its way in the final chapters, but that turns out to be the whole point. Ultimately this story is not what it at first seems, and Houdini is not the only ‘confabulist.’ Hours: Closed Sunday and Monday; Tuesday, 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m.

4-H Challengers preparing for Souris Fair submitted The Souris 4-H Challengers Beef Project met this week to finish preparations for their show and sale to be held in conjunction with the Souris Fair on July 11. Project leader Tanya Perkin demonstrated clipping and each member had a chance to try clipping their steer. Members also worked on leading their steer and setting them up in show position. It has been several years since there was a beef show and sale at the Fair, but there was enough interest this year for the Beef Project to come back. Each member selected a steer in December and has been busy feeding, taming, halter breaking, and grooming their steer. The steers were weighed in December and will be weighed again prior to the sale. This allows the members to participate in classes such as Champion Home Grown steer and Rate of Gain Award. The members invite the public and local businesses to come out and watch Fuzzy (Ivy Perkin), Steve (Liam Perkin), Sid (Jackson Kohut), RJ (Riley Jackson), Sherman (Garrett Turner), and Doug (Ethan Turner) on July 11 at 3:00 p.m. After the show, there will be six After disappearing from the Souris Fair several years ago, the Beef Show is back and the Souris 4-H steers for sale. If you are interested in purchasing a steer Challengers are ready. In total, six steers will be up for auction. *254<*7.3, +&72*78 ` Ag in Motion brings innovation to the field ALL FARMERS KNOW DECISIONS are made in the field. Imagine a place, an event, created to empower farmers by providing the information they need to make these important decisions. A place where they can see the latest equipment in action, in the field – operating in the same environment it’s made for. A place where farmers can see multiple varieties of live crop plots growing side by side in the field. This summer, such a place will exist. Introducing Ag in Motion, Western Canada’s newest and only outdoor farm expo. Debuting July 21 to 23, on a half-section (320 acres) near Saskatoon, SK, it’s the only show that provides an outdoor venue for progressive farmers in Western Canada that want to see and experience the latest agricultural innovation, all in one place. Ag in Motion will feature field equipment demonstrations, live crop plots and interactive exhibits such as “ride and drives and smaller equipment demos. “Ag in Motion will offer farmers a unique opportunity to compare crop plots and machinery, in action, and ultimately help them make decisions about the best products for their operations, says Show Director Rob O’Connor. “There’s nowhere else in Western Canada where farmers can actually see multiple pieces of farm equipment in operation, take a test drive, or compare different crop varieties all in one place. What does an outdoor show look like? The Ag in Motion team brings together the expertise of seasoned farm show organizers.
Be Wise, Advertise!!
The Expo is operated by Glacier FarmMedia, who owns Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show, the country’s largest outdoor farm show held annually near Woodstock, Ontario. Also part of Glacier FarmMedia are Western Producer, Manitoba Co-operator, Grainews, Country Guide, Canadian Cattlemen, Alberta Farmer Express and AgDealer. The team knows what’s involved in delivering an outdoor show, and the potential such a venue provides. Now in its 22nd year, Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show delivers 750 exhibitors and 42,000 visitors each year. Most attendees come to see the newest technologies in agriculture. Its success is based on the fact that active farmers attend to do business – make decisions – and the show is dedicated solely to agricultural products, equipment and services.
Ag in Motion is applying the same model and will become a must-see event by showcasing cutting-edge agricultural advancements that empower Canadian farmers to help meet their goals in producing high quality, safe food in a competitive marketplace. To learn more about how an outdoor show looks and operates, view the videos on the Ag in Motion website, www.aginmotion.ca. Live Demos and Interactive Exhibits The number of Ag in Motion exhibitors is growing steadily each week and includes seed and crop protection companies, field equipment and livestock handling manufacturers, financial services, nutrition, baling products, tires, fertilizers and much more.

OBITUARY DENBOW Bertha Margery Denbow 1915 – 2015 On Monday, June 22, 2015, Bertha Margery (Duncan) Denbow passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Souris Personal Care Home, having lived a full and happy life for just short of a century. A pioneer of the Deleau/Bethel Church District she was born on July 30, 1915 on the Duncan family homestead. She was the fourth born of a family of ten. She was predeceased by her husband Reuben in 1967, daughter Dawn Howard in 2002, parents Andrew and Lillian Duncan, brothers Cecil, Melvin, Norris and Allan, sisters Winnifred MacDonald, Ruby Doyle, Alma McCarvill and Ivy Morris. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Gail Watson (Lyle), granddaughters Lori Watson; Jody Watson (Jonathan) and great-grandson Austin; by son-in-law Charles Howard (JoAnne), grandchildren Courtney Howard Scott (Darcy), great-granddaughters Elody and Viviana; Trevor Howard (Mari), great-granddaughter Charlie; granddaughter Kelsey; sister Joan Phillips and many nieces, nephews and their families. Bertha completed Grade 11 at Deleau Consolidated School and enjoyed playing tennis and basketball. She wanted to become a nurse but the financial means were not available to her. At the age of 19 she went to work at the Denbow family farm, one mile away from her own home to manage the household responsibilities. On March 19, 1936 she married the love of her life Reuben Denbow, and the Denbow farm became her home for the next 79 years. Reuben and Bertha took over responsibilities for the farm and together they milked cows, raised purebred Aberdeen Angus cattle, chickens, turkeys and grew cereal crops. Until the early 1950ʼs Bertha ran a household and worked as an equal partner outside on the farm without the benefits of electricity or running water. She had a wood stove, an icehouse and an outdoor toilet. In addition to helping with the cattle and poultry, she planted, cared for and harvested two large gardens to supply the food needs of the family and hired help. During threshing times she would feed between 15 to 20 people meals and lunches each day. Gardening was a pleasure and even in her later years she planted more than enough to share with her family, neighbours and Souris friends. Having plenty of flowers was valued and she took considerable pleasure in a good looking yard. When the Deleau Curling Rink opened she became an avid curler and enjoyed competing in local bonspiels. Later she curled with the Souris Ladies until her 92nd year, sometimes representing the club and region in competitions. Reuben and Bertha loved to dance and were known for winning all the Old Time Waltz competitions at the community dances throughout the area, plus were often part of the best square dance set as well. After Reubenʼs passing she took up golf and could be seen weekly on the Souris Golf Course with the Tuesday Ladies League, playing into her 94th year. Bertha was an active volunteer in the community and held leadership and executive roles. She belonged to the Bethel United Church Women, delivered Meals on Wheels and was a life member of both the Souris Legion Auxiliary and the Crescent Rebekah Lodge. She travelled with Reuben to Flin Flon to fish and to Yellowknife to visit with Dawn. Later Vancouver, Hawaii, Barbados and Palm Springs were also experienced. Bertha enjoyed a fun time, loved to laugh, was independent, determined, youthful in spirit, resourceful, practical, a hard worker, and an advisor to her family and friends. Bertha was a living Sifton Municipality encyclopedia with knowledge of names and dates going back beyond her 99 years and was called upon often to share her wisdom. Her family and neighbours were important to her and she often showed up at their door with a pan of biscuits, home-made buns or a pie when she knew it was busy on their farm. We are grateful to her neighbours who supported her being able to remain on the farm. She lived by herself for 48 years, but was never really alone. Special thanks to Dr. Stone and the members of the Souris Medical Associates, the staff of both the Souris Hospital and the Personal Care Home for their excellent care. Funeral services were held in St. Paulʼs United Church on Friday, June 26, 2015 and interment in the Souris & Glenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Bertha may be made to the Souris Personal Care Home c/o Prairie Mountain Health, Box 10, Souris, MB R0K 2C0, or to a charity of your choice. Kowalchukʼs Funeral Home, Souris in charge of arrangements. Expression of sympathy may be made at www.kowalchuks.net.
Palliative Care Room makes a difference at the most difficult time Souris and District Palliative Care members (L-R) Lynne Janz, Christine Janz, and Eleanor Hayes, are seen here showing off one of two newly decorated Palliative Care and Family Rooms at the Souris Health Centre. Donations from the Memory Tree, Donor’s Choice, and private donors allowed for new paint jobs, sleeper and recliner chairs, tables, lamps, clocks, CD players, wall and window coverings, updating patient rooms. Family rooms have Keurig coffee machines and new microwaves for added comfort and convenience. The Palliative Care Committee thanks the public for the continued support. PHOTOS/DEBBIE BUTLER

Car racing returns to Souris by Glen Kirby The dirt is flying again this season at the car racing track to the east of Souris, with last weekend’s event drawing nine drivers and an estimated crowd of 100 spectators. “That’s a pretty good turnout,” says Matt Bootsman, a founding member of the Prairie Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (PASCAR), a Brandon-based group now operating the track built in the early 1990s on surplus land at the Souris Airport. PASCAR is planning eight race days in 2015 plus another four ‘test and tune’ events to give drivers an opportunity to try out the track. A grand reopening of the Souris Motor Speedway is scheduled for September 6. “The track itself is good,” says Bootsman “Our plan is to rebuild the bleachers, the fencing, and construct a concession stand.” Bootsman and PASCAR partner Chad Bicklmeier signed a five year lease with the Souris-Glenwood Airport Commission in 2012 with plans to reactivate the track which had been dormant for more than a decade. The Westman Stockcar Club originally built the Speedway and ran races until 2001. “At the peak, we would have 40 cars show up for a day of racing and a thousand people in the stands watching,” says Doug Wannop, a Brandon businessman and former president of the now-defunct Westman Stockcar Club. “We had cars and drivers from all over - Brandon, Souris, Killarney, Portage.” Despite a full season of racing in 2014, local participation seems stuck in neutral. Bootsman admits all the cars and drivers are currently from Brandon, and he’s been unable to attract any sponsorship from Souris businesses. “I am surprised by the lack of local participation,” he says. “Our goal is to have someone in Souris take over the operation but we haven’t seen any interest.” The race club currently runs in conjunction with the Brandon Kinsmen Club, and any proceeds are reinvested into the club or the local community. Bootsman, the owner of Westman Premier Homes Ltd. and Premier Commercial Builders, says he has invested approximately $8,000 since 2012 to upgrade the venue and pay for operating costs including liability insurance. “I can see great growth and opportunity in it,” says

Bootsman. “We got it started. Now it’s up to the Town to do something with it.” The Souris Motor Speedway is one of a small handful of racing tracks in the province which includes Swan River Speedway, celebrating 30 years in operation; Red River Coop Speedway near Winnipeg; and ALH Motor Speedway at Morden. Wannop says his group built in Souris in the early 1990s after Brandon City Council voted down a proposal to locate the track in that city. “We needed a place to race and land was available at the Souris Airport,” he recalls. Bootsman says it’s relatively easy and inexpensive to put together a car for racing at the Speedway. “We are only run-
ning a four cylinder mini-stock class. You can take a $250 car from an MPI salvage auction and be racing the next weekend, after installing a roll cage.” Wannop believes the revitalized Speedway will do well but says local involvement will be key. “It’s tough to get people from Brandon to drive to Souris,” says Wannop. “But once you get 12 to 15 cars racing on a weekend, the crowds will come.” Bootsman says he became involved two years ago simply for the love of car racing and intends to remain as an organizer and driver. “Our motto is simple,” he laughs. “I have a race car. That answers everything!”

Solutions & Substitutions by Reena Nerbas Hi Reena, I am checking whether you know if there is a nontoxic way to deal with tent caterpillars, maybe something I can spray to kill them? Thanks. Abe Hi Abe, Tent caterpillars are notorious for stripping a tree in a short amount of time. They eat at incredible rates and most people don’t necessarily want to prune every infected branch. The best time to get rid of tent caterpillars is early in the morning while they are still in their nest. However, this non-toxic remedy may be used at any time. Fill a spray bottle with vegetable oil and spray each tent nest, and caterpillar. Since the adorable creatures breathe through their skin, the oil prevents them from the ability to take in air. Some people burn caterpillars, however, this is risky especially during dry seasons, as fires can quickly spread out of control. Hi Reena, Just wondering if you know how we can clean up grease/oil stains on a cement patio around the barbecue area? We would greatly appreciate any helpful hints you may have. Carol Dear Carol, Apply a solution of one cup washing soda and one quarter cup TSP (trisodium phosphate) per gallon of water. Scrub or pressure-wash stains. As a last resort, combat tough grease stains with muriatic acid. Apply the acid following the manufacturer’s directions, and let it soak for several seconds. Keep in mind that muriatic acid is a dangerous product. If you use it, wear rubber or latex gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing, and never wash it down storm drains. Test all solutions on an inconspicuous area first. Dear Reena, Do you have a recipe similar to Oscar’s Deli dill pickles that use the more mature cucumbers? Joyce Dear Joyce, For crispy pickles, it is best to use fresh cucumbers but here is a recipe sent in by a contributor who had success using overripe cucumbers. Peel and seed seven pounds ripe cucumbers. Cut lengthwise and soak overnight in a large container with 2 gallons water and 1 cup salt. Drain and then soak cucumbers in clear water, drain. Stir together 4 1/2 pounds sugar, half gallon white
vinegar, cloves, dill, onions, hot peppers, and garlic cloves. Soak cucumbers in mixture overnight. Bring to a boil, cool and refrigerate or seal. Makes 8 pints. Feedback from insightful reader Dear Reena, I live with antique furniture that remains closed; dressers, desks, commodes, etc. and have noticed the odour from the old wood. My solution: Wash the exposed wood with a solution of 1 tbsp. tea tree oil, 1 tbsp. dish soap, and 4 cups vinegar. After the wood surfaces have dried, I apply (natural) cedar oil with a cheesecloth. The scent is a bit strong at first but eventually evaporates. This is also an all-purpose spray cleaner for mirrors, bathrooms, and kitchen surfaces and doesn’t use bleach but does inhibit the nasty stuff like black mildew around sinks. Cheers, Cathie Repurpose common items into unique planters • Stuff the legs of an old pair of kid’s jeans with plastic bags. Put planter pot inside waist and secure with a belt. Add plant. A few seated stuffed jean planters in a row create unique garden accents. Also works with colourful shoes and rubber or work boots. • Don’t know what to do with that old wooden piano? Open the lid and fill with plant pots. Cascade gorgeous flowers from
