Hillcrest Museum major player in Souris tourism industry Hillcrest Museum sits atop the west bank of the Souris River, a stalwart in the Town of Souris for more than a century. Add in the Souris Swinging Bridge, itself a major historical landmark adjacent to the property, and you have the heart of tourism in Souris. With the busy travel season coming to a close, the Museum staff will be heading back to school and the Board will be left with tidying up and planning for 2016. Young Sabre squad gears up for 2015 by Darci Semeschuk While we were enjoying the dog days of summer, sitting in our back yards with a cool drink, a group of young men were working out in the hot sun, getting ready for football season. The 2015 Southwest Varsity Sabres are gearing up for a busy season. With only five senior players returning, the 2015 Sabres look to be a fairly young team. This doesn’t rattle the squad as all 30 players who are suiting up plan to make 2015 a successful year. The Sabres football team will consist of players from Souris, Hartney, Wawanesa, Reston, and Boissevain. They range from Grades 9 - 12 and play under the watchful eye of Souris School teacher, Brian Elder. Elder has recruited five former Sabres to assist him with the coaching duties. They include Ryan Gilliard, Jason Harvey, Aaron Turnbull,

I apologize if you were disappointed in the absence of my report in the paper for the past two weeks. I was away on a holiday and did not remember to ask someone to take information. But apparently nothing breathtaking happened and the Ace of Spades was not found, so we continue on as usual. On Friday, August 28, our meat draw was a fun evening with multiple winners scarce. Lady Luck

Nathan Greig, and Terry Doull. Sandra Vinck will take on the managerial duties once again. “What I like about this team is that all players who come out for the team get to play,” remarked Vinck. “It’s just a great atmosphere for everyone.” The season will con sist of nine games and will begin Thursday, September 10, at Souris School. Moosomin will be in town for a 4:30 kickoff. In fact all home games will begin at that time. The entire schedule is as follows: September 17 at East Parkland (Ste. Rose); September 25 Swan Valley at Souris; October 2 Southwest at Parkland (Shoal Lake); October 8 Southwest at Virden; October 15 Neepawa at Souris; October 21 Dauphin at Souris; October 31 semi finals; November 7 finals and Doug Steeves/ Murray Black game. was favouring visitors from out-of-town. Lorna and Mel Hill, from Carlyle SK, collected three packages of meat and the household of Delores and Ed Genaille also got to choose two selections. The 50-50 draw was worth $61 and the winning ticket was held by Justine, one of our busy workers. Norma Dodd tried her luck at finding the Ace of Spades so that she could take home $761 but was not successful. We will offer it again this week. Edward Jones - Financial tips for newlyweds manage your financial or personal affairs because of illness or injury. Establish an emergency fund. Keep six to nine months combined living expenses in an emergency fund. If you run into financial difficulty - perhaps one of you could fall ill or lose your job - an emergency fund can help you get through. One final tip. It’s a good idea to get help from financial experts. At this stage of life couples can benefit from professional advice, including the services of a financial advisor. With the right advice you can ensure your financial life together gets started on the right note.

The two have a rather convoluted and unhappy history and Shepard tries to use this as a plot device. Sadly, the story almost instantly bogs down. It begins in the present tense, then shifts into the past to an old case of Maddox’s uncle, himself once a detective, then sidesteps to another period and the journeys Shelley, Mary, Lord Byron and others made to Italy, then back to the present, then to the past again with hints that Shelley’s first wife did not commit suicide but was murdered, then even further back to another time period with more suggestions of murder of both woman and babies, then back to the present, then... well, you get the idea. It is a tedious and hard to fol low tale which just isn’t worth the time it takes. Were I you, I’d find something else to read. Mrs. Poe, by Lynn Cullen, is somewhat better. The title is open to interpretation, as it could refer either to the actual Mrs. Poe (Virginia), or to Frances Osgood, Poe’s mistress. The book relates the love triangle existing among these three char acters at the time of Poe’s first major suc cess. Frances, effec tively abandoned by her philandering husband, comes increasingly under Poe’s spell as they are thrown together at the innumerable social evenings, lec tures, etc. that were a constant feature of upper class 19th century social life. Virginia, suf fering from the con sumption that would eventually kill her, takes

a liking to Frances, and so the stage is set for some increasingly awk ward situations and per haps dangerous intrigue. For the most part, the characters are well drawn and the times accurately, if depress ingly, depicted. The exception is Virginia. She is shown as child ish, obsessive, and vin dictive – all of which she may well have been, but the depiction is a bit overdrawn and thus unrealistic. The Reverend Griswold – who hated Poe but nonetheless wrote his biography and, in so doing, ensured that his (Griswold’s) distorted views of the man persist to this day – suffers from similar treatment, being presented almost as a caricature. Despite these drawbacks, the book isn’t bad and will probably appeal to those

of you who enjoy his torical romances. Hours: Closed Sunday and Monday, Closed; Tuesday, 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 12:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

There is an art to writing stories which involve historical fig ures. Since we know who they were, what they did and, in many cases, what they were like – or reputed to be like – the author must tread a very fine line if the book is to be taken seriously. I have already reviewed one such book lately, and found it severely wanting. Today I will look at two oth ers. A Fatal Likeness, by Lynn Shepard, seemed to have potential. It was advertised as a mystery, and I do enjoy those. This one involved the 19th century poet Percy B. Shelley and his wife Mary, author of Frankenstein. It begins with a request for a meeting between the third generation Shelleys and Detective Maddox. Maddox is summoned by the Shelley’s grandson and his particularly obnox ious wife, ostensibly to investigate an offer they have received from per sons unknown to sell them some of the cele brated poet’s papers. It is a historical fact that after his death many of Shelley’s papers were intentionally destroyed by his relatives in an effort to clean-up his image, or at least have it conform more closely to the strictures of the times, so the concept behind this tale is authentic. Maddox quickly discovers the supposed seller is Clair Claremont, Mary Shelley’s step sister.

borrowing costs. For example, setting up a home equity line of credit if you own a house and quickly paying off any amounts you borrow. Assess insurance needs. Life insurance is a necessity when you are married. The last thing you want is for your spouse or family to be left in dire financial straits if something happens to you. Consider disability and critical care insurance as well. Make or update wills. Both partners should have up-to-date wills. This means jointly discussing estate planning needs and goals. You should also have powers of attorney for financial and personal care, in case one of you is unable to

Decide how finances will be managed. Will one spouse be responsible for a larger percentage of bills and expenses or will they be shared equally? Will you have joint savings and investments? Who will physically handle financial transactions? Pay down debt. If you owe money, particularly high-interest debt such as credit card balances, formulate a plan to pay it off. A marriage is a new financial start. When couples get together there are adjustments to be made, goals to be set, and financial adventures to take. Share information. Both partners should be fully aware of each other’s financial situations, from spending to debt to investments. With full financial disclosure, you’ll be better equipped to plan together. Review and establish goals. The sooner you set financial goals, the better your chances of reaching them. Do you want to buy a new home or move up in the housing market? Breaktime by Darci Semeschuk

by Darci Semeschuk Do you ever wish you had another option for insuring your vehicle other than Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI)? If there was a candidate for the next Provincial election who promised to remove the MPI monopoly, I would be all over that. I have always been a strong supporter of these type of agencies, agencies that work for the people but it seems that MPI has become an entity all on its own. They are there simply to make money and at any cost. As users, we have no recourse if we are unhappy with a decision they have made. In my opinion MPI has become much like unions have. They were good for a while but now are simply too powerful. Oh, sure, you have the option to file an appeal if you’re unhappy with their decision but believe me, those never go the subscriber’s way. In my last claim, someone opened a door on my new car. Smashed the mirror and dented the door. That’s how I found it. No fault of mine - I made a claim only to be told that there was no way one vehicle could have broken my mirror and dented the door underneath it. It was two separate accidents and I must be lying if I said anything else. After the appeal, which was denied, my car was fixed and I paid two deductibles. That one really sticks in my craw. Now I have been waiting to have a mouse claim fixed since June 23 - over two months because a prior mouse claim repair shop had left some vents inside my instrument panel unattached when they put it back together. Again, not my fault. MPI refuses to pay for those vents ($300) because I can’t prove definitively that the shop where the repair was made is responsible for them being unattached and ultimately damaged. I can’t prove that I didn’t remove my instrument panel for some other reason and damage them myself. Another lost appeal! So you see my frustration with MPI and if I could drop them as a carrier I would but in Manitoba with an NDP government we have no other options. Note: Nissan Altima - susceptible to mouse infestations - parts on order from - guess where? China! Could be several more weeks!

Colouring outside the lines by Vern May People love when things can be readily defined and categorized. Where does this belong? That fits in this box with all the other similar items. The same applies to how we identify each other. Using as few words as possible, pigeon-hole others to where we feel they best fit. We’ll classify them by occupation - a cook, a plumber, a garbage man, a stay at home parent; we’ll label them by personality - a nice guy, a jerk, a self-obsessed ego maniac. But not everyone is readily slotted into a single box. For me, I have always been amused when people would label me simply as “the wrestler”. For many, that title carries strong stereotypes which have both been discrediting and empowering at different times. Many see wrestlers as dumb jocks, monosyllabic brutes who lack critical thinking skills and solve their problems through aggression. I’ve lost track of the times when someone

would sit me down, take a tentative tone like they were parenting a toddler and try to explain a topic to me. Oh, I understand all right. I have been fortunate at a few times during my adult life to work with people who saw beyond my job title and keyed in on my potential within their organization. They hired for enthusiasm and sent me for professional development on the job to ensure that my credentials on paper married up to the rigid qualifications identified on a job description somewhere. As a result, there is a lot about my background that doesn’t fit into any one box. While working for Simon Fraser University, I was hired as the first member of their front line security team without five years police experience or related training. So, I was enrolled in a certificate program at the police academy. Among the skills added to my repertoire were internal investigations, fraud detection,

statement analysis and forensic interviewing. Yes, I received formal training to detect when someone is lying to me - in person and on paper. Tell me that isn’t a skill that comes in handy on multiple professional fronts. At one point, it looked like I might be interested to evolve from security to senior university administration and had a few key supporters urging me to make that transition. So, I was sent back to school, this time to earn a University Management Certificate. While focused on the postsecondary world, the course explored human relations management, budgeting, strategic planning and risk management. All tools required in any business management role. Perhaps my favourite twist of fate was an opportunity to secure certification as a teacher. In 2011, I was sought out to deliver instruction on workplace violence and managing conflict. I was back in the

classroom again, certified as an instructor in NonViolent Crisis Intervention. This looked at managing disruptive behaviours in the workplace and over the next three years, I was in front of more than 900 emerging professionals in several fields - healthcare, legal assistant, educators, and my peers. Very little of my professional life is easily categorized. I suspect that there are a number of people in our communities who could say the same. People with such a rich and diverse life experience that it truly should be celebrated. Have you met them? I guarantee their stories would leave you in a state of awe. For me, maybe it’s best to just carry the label “the wrestler” and keep expectation levels low. It gives me the opportunity to wow ‘em more often than not. Adapting to diverse workplace environments, I’d chalk that up as a lesson I’ve had to learn in the school of hard knocks.

Skate Manitoba Day set for September 10 submitted The happily anticipated time of year has come again to Souris. Souris Skating Club and program registration! With the Souris Skating Club registration just around the corner, we are very pleased and excited to announce and introduce our returning coaches and our new coaching additions as well as some important information for those who may be looking to take a dip into this exciting sport! Souris Skating Club will be hosting its annual Skate Manitoba Day on September 10 at 4:30 p.m. Come out with your skates to try our Learn to Skate program for free with Jessica Brown. CanSkate and StarSkate registration will also be held at the same time. In more exciting news the Souris Skating Club’s new and returning coaches are as follows: Jessica Brown, who will be running our CanSkate and Pre CanSkate programs. Jessica Brown began skating with the Souris Figure Skating Club at the age of three starting with CanSkate and moving upwards until she graduated high school. She skated singles until Grade 9 and then decided that she just wanted to participate in Precision (now called Synchronized Skating). Jessica loved being on the ice as part of team! She skated for the remainder of her high school days with the Souris Sophistaskates. After Jessica graduated she went to school in Brandon but ended up coming back to Souris in the evenings to help out the Synchronized Skating team for a few years until an adult team became available for her to skate on, The Wheat City ConnXion (2015/16 will be her 12th season with them.) On top of helping out with the Souris Skating Clubs

Correction In our story, “Temporary disruptions when Souris School reopens” which appeared in the August 28 Plaindealer, we had stated that the School Division is “renting” space from Faith Community Baptist Church when in fact, that space is being provided, according to a church representative, by the church at no cost. The School Division will make a donation at a later date. The report stating that they were “renting” space was shared with our reporter by a representative of the Division and was posted on their website in an official press release.

Synchronized Skating team she also volunteered with Skate Brandon and their CanSkate program stating, “I really enjoyed being on the ice and having fun with the children!” After many years of volunteering as a Program Assistant she decided the next step was to take her coaching. Jessica has been coaching CanSkate for five years and has really enjoyed it! In between her skating, she also married her high school sweetheart, Brett Arbuckle. Together they have two amazing children, Aubree, 3 and Graham, 1. The Souris Skating Clubs CanSkate Program is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Based on Sport Canada’s long term athlete development (LTAD) principles, CanSkate centers on physical literacy and the fundamental skills needed to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity. The Souris Skating Clubs CanSkate is for beginners of all ages, children or adults, as well as for those wishing to improve their basic skills whether their focus is for figure skating, hockey, speed skating or just skating for fun. We will again be offering a later class on Mondays from 6:00 - 6:50 and earlier on Wednesdays from 3:40 4:30. You can sign your skater up for one day a week or two. Parents whose children attend the Souris Daycare and are interested in signing them up for the Pre-CanSkate program (which is offered through the Daycare and the Club combined) may contact Tara Mills at the Daycare if you are wanting your child to have access to this program while at the Souris Daycare! These programs start the week of October 19th and run until March 7 with the Ice Show being March 11, 2016. The Rising Stars Program is a bridging program for skaters who are moving into the world of figure skating. They have shown a passion, skill, and interest in pursuing skating beyond CanSkate. The Rising Stars Program is designed to make the transition from CanSkate to STAR One easier by better

preparing the skaters for independent learning/practicing and skating with respect to others on the ice. It is available for any skater who has passed Stage 4 of the CanSkate program and has not passed their Preliminary Dances and Skills. It is a 45 minute fully structured program run by our professional coaches, Teagan Kliever and Lindsay Filewich. Teagan learned to skate playing hockey on her brothers’ team until she was five and then switched over to the figure skating world! She skated both synchro and singles all through high school where she became a triple gold skater. She has passed her gold levels in Skills, Dance and Interpretive and got to a senior bronze level with free skate! Teagan continued synchro after high school skating with the Carberry Club and the Brandon Club and then decided to complete her coaching in the hopes of both skating and continuing to teach young skaters about a sport she loves. Teagan is married to Troy Kliever and they have two wonderful boys, Paysen, 3 and Cruz, 2. Like Teagan, Lindsay also began her skating career with the Souris Skating Club. Lindsay started skating with the Souris Figure Skating Club at age 3 in the CanSkate program. She moved up starting singles skating and synchro skating at age 5 and continued through to age 18. She has completed her gold testing in Skills, Dance, Free Skate, and Interpretive. After graduation, Lindsay spent a season skating with Les Supremes, a competitive senior synchronized skating team, in St. Leonard (Montreal), QC. Lindsay is married to Jonathan and has an adorable little boy Kennedy, 1. Carolyne Cybulsky who will be running our StarSkate program (along side Teagan Kliever and Lindsay Filewich) is our new coach who we are excited to add to our lovely team of professional coaches at the Souris Skating Club. Carolyne started skating at the early age of 2 and skated competitively until 21 when she decided to start coaching. She has taken her skaters to

Liberal plan exactly what the local governments need; Wyman submitted On August 27, 2015, Justin Trudeau announced the Liberals will strengthen the middle class, create jobs, and grow Canada’s economy by making historic new investments in infrastructure. “For months I’ve been meeting with Reeves and Mayors and farmers throughout our community. By far the biggest concern they have is infrastructure,” said Liberal candidate, Jodi

Wyman. “Manitoba has an $11 billion infrastructure deficit. Cuts and restrictions imposed by the Harper government to the Build Canada Fund have been frustrating for our municipalities. This Liberal plan is exactly what the local governments of Brandon-Souris need to grow, and what our economic engines of agriculture and oil need.” A Liberal government will make the largest new

infrastructure investment in Canadian history with their plan to: • Nearly double federal infrastructure investment to almost $125 billion - from the current $65 billion over the next decade, reaching an additional $9.5 billion by year ten; • Make an immediate down payment to kick-start job creation and economic growth by doubling the current Federal infrastructure investment in each of

the next two fiscal years; • Provide new, dedicated funding to provinces, territories, and municipalities for: Public transit infrastructure, Social infrastructure – including affordable housing and seniors facilities, early learning and child care, and cultural and recreational infrastructure, Green infrastructure – including local and wastewater facilities, climate resilient infrastructure, and clean energy;

• Increase the transparency of the New Building Canada Fund by providing clearer project criteria and faster approval processes that will now prioritize investments in roads, bridges, transportation, ports, and border gateways; and • Help fund public infrastructure projects with the creation of a new Canada Infrastructure Bank. “Every dollar we spend on public infrastructure

grows our economy, creates jobs, and strengthens our cities and towns,” said Mr. Trudeau. “Government has a responsibility to act decisively and for the public good. Canada’s economic growth was made possible by building ambitiously. We must do so again if we are to transform our transit and transportation systems, create more livable communities, and ensure that we adapt to a changing climate.”

15091ss1 Woman selected for scholarship has local ties submitted A Kelowna woman who was selected as a recipient for an annual scholarship program aimed at helping Canadian stu dents living with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis has connections to Souris. Keara Maguire, aged 25, was diag nosed with ulcerative colitis at the peak of her competitive speed skating career but pushed through her symptoms to be named to the 2014 Olympic Talent Squad. But Maguire decided to put her dreams on hold and focus on maintain ing her health. Since then, she has gone on to study respiratory therapy and is working towards a career as a cardiovas cular perfusionist. To help support her dreams, she has been awarded the fourth annual AbbVie IBD Scholarship worth $5,000. The scholarship will help Maguire achieve her academic goals and continue to inspire others who are facing similar challenges. “ When we read through Keara’s sub mission we were so inspired by the sac rifices and lifestyle changes she made in order to prioritize her health, ” said Mina Mawani, President and CEO, Crohn’s

and Colitis Canada. “ At the end of the day, the goal is to provide support and help bright students like Keara rise above the challenges they face because of ulcerative colitis and achieve her dreams.” Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis is most often diagnosed between the ages 15 and 30, with the typical onset being in the early 20s. This time in an individual’s life is a crucial one in terms of development and education. While stress doesn’t cause Crohn’s or colitis, it is one of the biggest triggers for disease flare-ups, so post-secondary school stu dents face a difficult challenge of man aging their approach to deadlines and new activities. The AbbVie IBD Scholarship is designed to assist those living with these chronic diseases as they navigate their post-secondary education. Keara Maguire has undergone four major surgeries to help her deal with this disease, the latest being only two weeks ago according to her grandparents, Harold and Diane Maguire of Souris. Note: Portions of this article appeared on the August 20 Kelowna Now website,www.kelownanow.com
