A new fundraising project is in the works for the Souris Glenwood Fire Department. Souris Fire Department raising funds for Rescue Command Vehicle by Darci Semeschuk When Souris Fire Chief Brian Parham accepted a cheque for $2,500 from Rick Remillard of Pembina Co-op, he was pleased to know that those funds were putting them one step closer to a new Rescue Command Vehicle for the Department. “Our current Command
Vehicle is busting at the seams,” explained Parham. “The one we have is twenty-five years old and quite frankly, we’ve just outgrown it.” Donations such as the one from Pembina Co-op and others go a long way towards keeping the Fire Department current with their equipment.
Co-op manager, Rick Remillard explained why they chose to support the Fire Department at this time. “When the Fire Department came to us asking for a donation for their supper at the Canada 150 event, we just thought we could do more,” explained Remillard. “We took it
to our Board of Directors and they decided that the project was worthy of this $2,500 donation.” Pembina Co-op has a certain amount of money available each year for worthy projects such as this and this one qualifies for consideration. While the Department has no final fundraising
goal formulated, as yet, for the truck projects, Parham says that it is understood they are fundraising for the new command truck. “We have to prepare a detail plan, decide on a type of vehicle and ask for permission from the Municipal Council to go ahead with the plan,” he explained. “I’m not sure

The day we got electricity by Bruce Philp Bruce Philp, born in Souris, moved to Toronto in 1960 to pursue a successful career in the music industry as a drummer/percussionist, and is still active in that field. Bruce has never forgotten his Manitoba roots and the wonderful people of Souris. Beginning in the 1920s, hydro electric power, already existing in larger cities, started to make its way into smaller Canadian towns and villages. For

example, Souris, Manitoba, became “electrified” in 1939. However, it took years for the farms in the Souris/Glenwood district to access this modern technology. Herewith, my memory of a very exciting time: My parents, the late Fred and Jean Philp, owned a farm on the south side of Highway 2 near Newstead railroad siding. My brother Jim and I were young children in the 1940s. Our father,

Fred, was a progressive and successful farmer, and was well known in the community. He and two neighbours took it upon themselves to canvass the district and promote the bringing in of hydro electric power for all the farms in the district. They were met with some resistance (some said they didn’t need it!) but ultimately prevailed. One day, to my father’s delight, a freight train off-loaded a large number of hydro poles at the Newstead siding; this, of course, was the first step in bringing hydro to the farms. We had our house wired up, with light fixtures and outlets, etc. in prepara-
Bruce Philp tion for the big day. That day, according to our farm records, was December
6, 1945. Drawing on my memories as a three and a half year- old, I recall that the day service was to begin, Mother was doing some shopping in Brandon, set to drive home in the early evening. She had “ordered” us not to turn on any lights until she was back. My Father was having none of that. He, my brother Jim, and I excitedly went everywhere in the house, switching on every light. I had to be lifted up to have my turn at the light switches. Imagine the contrast, going from kerosene lamps to electricity! On a dark December evening, from the nearby highway our home must have
looked like Las Vegas! Postscript Manitoba Hydro arranged for certain farms to host a showing of all the new appliances now available. Our farm was chosen, and there was an impressive display of stoves, refrigerators, fans, etc.; all the neighbours came over to see these wonderful devices. As a gift, the hydro company gave us a new Sunbeam electric pop-up toaster - the bread even lowered automatically, and came up perfectly toasted - and a General Electric plug-in wall clock. I have that clock to this day in my Toronto residence. It still works perfectly!

Hartney Hopper Days parade a highlight of the weekend
Page 3, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, August 25, 2017
submitted One of the traditional highlights of Hartney Hopper Days, held the second weekend in August, is the parade and 2017 was no exception. The community and visitors enjoyed a great parade with old automobiles, farm equipment, floats, scooters, as well as people on horseback and floats drawn by horses. Community groups as well as businesses were represented. One of the highlights of this parade was this group of four teams and wagons. Not only were the four teams from one family, they also represented four generations of the Bill Jasper family of Hartney, MB. At the reins in the first wagon is Bill Jasper, then Ken Jasper (Bill’s son), and then James Jasper (Bill’s grandson) and then Louelle Jasper, (James’ daughter, Ken’s granddaughter and Bill’s great-granddaughter). Getting four wagons as well as four teams ready to bring to town for a parade is no easy feat and represents many dedicated hours of work, training, and driving. It is always great when a parade includes horses. There was a great turnout of riders on horseback, as well as horse-drawn wagons and a horse-drawn float. A rough count of over 20 horses appeared in the parade, much top the delight of spectators.

FCC awards $10,000 to RM of Pipestone Spray Park by Janelle Desrochers As the preparation of the grounds begins on the soon to be Reston Splash Park pad, the RM of Pipestone has received exciting news that the Farm Credit
Canada (FCC) has decided to award the project with $10,000 as a part of their FCC AgriSpirit Fund. In the news release the RM explains the FCC AgriSpirit Fund that was
distributed between 78 community groups across Canada to support rural capital projects. The total funds started at $1 million but were increased to $1.5 million in honour of Cana-
da’s 150th birthday. This is very good news for the communities in the RM of Pipestone as they have been working hard to fundraise the money to make the Splash Park a re-
ality. The RM of Pipestone Council formed a committee back in the fall of 2016 with hopes of having all the funds raised by September of 2017. The Splash Park is the

SFD raising funds for Rescue Command Vehicle
Continued from page 1 fundraiser for the future replacement of their current Rescue Command Vehicle, or a pseudo-launch. More than 400 people attended the event and along with all the money raised through raffle ticket sales and donations, $15,000 was raised! While no final goal has been set, Parham believes that they will need to raise $225,000 for the new Command Vehicle. The Fire Department will continue with their fundraising efforts through events such as the Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce spring and fall barbecues, and the bartending services that they offer to any event. “We will keep working towards the goal of raising money and appreciate any help that people can give us either through support of our activities or monetary donation,” stated Parham. The Souris Glenwood Fire Department is made up of 22 volunteers. These men and women are highly trained in motor vehicle response, farm accident response, and water rescue, among other things. “The days when you could just throw your name out there and be part of the fire department are over,” explained Parham. “With the newer technology and more sophisticated equipment, firefighters are more highly trained. Our volunteers put in hundreds of hours of training to become certified to do this job.” Parham says they will soon be putting out a call for more volunteers and those people have to be prepared to train. As Parham says, it is a big commitment. In addition to the hours of training that are required to become certified, there is a rigorous interview process and a trial period. The ideal candidate is a healthy individual between the ages of 20 – 35 years. Ideally, they would
be a town resident but Parham says they wouldn’t rule out rural volunteers. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter is asked to leave his or her name at the Municipal office in Souris. The Souris Glenwood Fire Department attends approximately 30 – 40 calls per year and these range between motor vehicle collisions, water rescues and farm accidents and while it seems like there has been an increase in calls for 2017, they are still on average with other years. “It does seem like westman has been harder hit than other years,” stated Parham. “Our Department is still within the average number of calls.” The next fundraiser that the Fire Department will be hosting is Scarecrow Days Weekend. They will be holding a barbecue at the Fire Hall and hope to see a lot of the community and visitors out to support
the cause. “We have struggled a bit with the change of venue since the building started on the new hotel,” Parham said. “We need people to know we’re still doing the barbecue, it’s just at the Fire Hall now.” Monetary donations are a huge boon for the Department and Parham wants people to know how much their contributions mean to them. “We appreciate so much the donations that come our way, either through support of raffles, donations or prizes, donations in memory of a loved one, or manpower. All of things mean a great deal to us and allow us to do the job we do in time of crisis,” Parham explained. “One good example is our water rescue equipment, all of that was donated to us. It’s this type of donation that makes the difference.” In addition to the donation from Pembina Co-op, Parham provided a list of

A Year in the Life of Souris District Arts Council - 2017 submitted Ever since the seeds were planted to start an Arts Council 13 years ago, one of our main goals has been to foster the arts in our own community. While planning a year of arts activities, we try to touch on different aspects in the arts, reaching out to new people as possible new concert goers, and yet encouraging our current season’s ticket holders and present attendees with providing another performance they will enjoy so that they will keep on coming back for more. In addition, we want to be able to expand on the artistic endeavors in the Souris area. During this past year, five performances were presented – the country music family, Brad Johner and the Johner Boys brought lots of energy with their songs both new and familiar; Michael Gabriel’s ‘Strings Attached’ concert displayed a wonderful “coming together of sound”, with the inclusion of a Souris community choir and strings to his mellow soul-searching tunes; MTC’s rural touring production, Last Train to Nibroc had the audience
mesmerized, waiting for each new turn of events in this romantic comedy ; Jason Farnham tickled the ivories, as only he could, on pianos both large and small, right-side-up and upside-down, in styles from blues to jazz to classical; and Mark Humphries, who in his one-man show, ‘An Evening of Music and Comedy’, had us awaiting each new wind instrument with keen anticipation. Each performance brought its own special artistic talents to the fore, and we were so privileged to be a part of it all. We have also attended workshops, started to develop our own website, and begun the preparations for the coming year’s events. In addition, we were able to apply for a grant which helped to provide Concerts in Care for the residents of the Personal Care Home in Souris. It has been another great year! There are so many people to thank, including the Manitoba Arts Network for including us in their tours, Manitoba Sports, Culture, & Heritage for our Audience Development Grants, the Municipality of Souris-Glenwood for their
Regional Economic Development Partnership requests your attendance The Dennis County Development Partnership is a collaboration between the Town of Virden, RM of Wallace-Woodworth, and RM of Pipestone. The Partnership is exploring new opportunities to expand the municipalities’ economies with the creation of an Investment Attraction and Economic Development Strategy. The Partnership has retained MDB Insight, an economic development consulting firm to assist with the project. MDB Insight will be working with staff, councillors, and the business community from the three municipalities to explore and identify opportunities to encourage investment and build industry capacity within the area. The
consulting firm will also explore how the Partnership’s municipalities can leverage strengths and assets for investors and businesses looking to establish southwestern Manitoba. In the meantime, the Partnership invites input from the public and business community. The Partnership will be holding a number of focus groups for residents and the business community from August 28 – 30. Focus group meetings will be held in the communities of Kenton (Monday, August 28, at 2:00 p.m., Kenton Memorial Hall; Reston (Monday, August 28, at 7:00 p.m., Reston RES Centre; Elkhorn (Tuesday, August 29, at 7:00 p.m., Elk Continued on Page A8
ongoing support, the Board of the Avalon Theatre who have worked with us to improve the facility for our performances, as well as all of our local sponsors, who so willingly helped us reach our goals by providing their monetary support. And then there are all the volunteers who have helped us – the board members, our members-at-
large and our friends of the arts – who have assisted us in being able to host the events we have planned. And now, Souris District Arts Council is thrilled to be able to announce the five performances that will be part of our next season: • Mark Humphries and his Orchestra features 18 musicians from southern Manitoba and southeastern
Saskatchewan with music from the Big Band era • Gordon McKeeman and his Rhythm Boys from PEI, with their lively East Coast Music • Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s rural touring production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ adapted and performed by Rod Beattie; a holiday classic with a twist!
• Bob Cates & Comedy in Motion with his amazing show from Quebec • The Adam T. ELVIS Show pays tribute to Elvis Presley, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll We are looking forward to being able to bring the Souris District another year of quality entertainment and enjoyment at a reasonable price.

Classic cars all have a story to tell
A small contingent of classic cars came for the last show this past Thursday, August 17, stirring up memories and feelings of nostalgia for the people in attendance. Unfortunately there was another Show-n-Shine on at the same time in Virden and a lot of people that normally would attend the Souris show actually went there but the Club still had approximately 25 cars on display. Special appreciation goes to the Souris rugby team for having the barbecues this year and the people who supported the Club by coming out even with the small showing. The Club hopes to continue next year and will advise of the schedule. Pictured: A gorgeous display of restored vehicles of yester-year lines Crescent Avenue while wistful car aficionados look on.
