Scientist by day - Folk-rocker by night, Sutter set to perform at Woodifre Deli, April 7 submitted Listening to Glenn Sutter is like catching up with an old friend. After getting bogged down with the stress and complexities of daily life, you suddenly feel a sense of contentment and are reminded of what’s truly important. With his uplifting brand of folk-rock, Sutter’s honest, smart, and emotional songs have been catching the attention of music lovers across Saskatchewan and beyond for almost a decade. Based in Regina, SK, Sutter frequently writes about nature, environmental issues, and the human condition. His love and appreciation of nature stems from his childhood growing up in the ‘70s in Souris where he spent much of his time outdoors hanging around the banks of the Souris River. According to Sutter, “I feel a strong sense of freedom and humility when I spend time outdoors. I love watching and thinking about the things I see, and there’s a sense of peace, beauty and wonder that offers a welcome alternative to stress and worry.” This curiosity and love of nature also helped guide his academic and professional careers, leading him to a PhD in Biology and his current role as Curator of Human Ecology at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. A lifelong musician from a musical family, Sutter first started tinkering with the piano at the age of four. Classically trained through Brandon University, he would go on to spend several years performing in blues bands and playing solo folk shows before taking a hiatus to focus on his career and raise a family. His first foray as a performing songwriter was in 2006, leading to his debut album All You Need in 2008, produced by WCMA award winner, David j Taylor. In 2010, Sutter released Seeds, a collaborative live album with Brett Dolter (B.D. Willoughby, Library Voices). As well, his song “Weight of the World” garnered national attention when it was selected as the official Saskatchewan song on David Su-

zuki’s playlist for the Planet on CBC Radio3, joining the ranks of notable artists like Danny Michel, Dehli 2 Dublin, and Paper Lions. In 2011, Sutter struck while the iron was hot and released his second solo album Sweet Happiness, once again produced by David j Taylor. With a growing catalogue of music, Sutter has spent the last few years playing local shows, touring, and writing a new batch of songs. The result is a stunning third solo album, Let the Dog Run. Produced by Mark Schmidt at Blue Door Studios and Northern Town Music, Sutter’s latest album is a folk-rock gem, with a welcome mix of blues, jazz, and piano balladry for good measure. This collection of songs is chock full of hope, optimism, and honesty that is sure to resonate with listeners. The songs on Let the Dog Run showcase a gentle balance between worldly concerns and self-reflection. Sutter explains, “Most of the tunes reflect topics I’ve been thinking about and experiences I’ve been going through over the last three years. Some themes are big in a global sense, including the need for people in the Western world to find more sustainable ways of living. Others have to do with changes and transitions that have been happening in my career and family”. In “Big White Bird,” Sutter laments the “black gold” left behind from oil spills, leading to species like the whooping crane becoming endangered. Elsewhere, in “State of Shock” and “Tiny Devils” he expresses anger and frustration about endless wars, corruption and hostility around the world. Ultimately, he finds inner peace and hope for the future in tracks like “A Day Like This,” “Let the Dog Run”, and “Promises.” It’s this sense of optimism that wins out and is sure to help Sutter gain more and more fans in the years ahead. Sutter is still a hometown favourite in Souris. You can catch up with him at the Woodfire Deli on Thursday, April 7, at 7:00 p.m.

Residents question “Hospital” sign coverage

by Darci Semeschuk Residents from the Town of Souris have noticed what they believe is a disturbing trend where someone is placing a wooden cover over the “H” hospital sign on the highways and Island in the Town of Souris. “We watched them cover the sign when we were having coffee one Wednesday and wondered why,” remarked a Souris resident. “We still have a very busy hospital. And Personal Care Home that are open. The emergency room might be closed but the hospital is still open.” They also expressed concerns that visitors who are coming to Town to see a patient might be confused when they see the covered signs. Emergency services are indeed closed every Wednesday from 8:00

a.m. until 8:00 a.m. Thursday until further notice. This began last December as staffing issues forced the closure. According to Souris Glenwood CAO, Charlotte Parham, the Town has no jurisdiction over the highways signs. “It’s not our public works staff that are covering the signs as some people have said,” she remarked. “This lies directly with the RHA.” According to Prairie Mountain Health Chief Executive Officer Penny Gilson, covering “hospital” signs is a long-standing practice when an emergency room is closed. She explained the rationale as follows: “Covering of the “H” signs when emergency departments are temporarily suspended or closed has been a very long standing practice (as long

as I can remember). The “H” sign is a Department of Highways sign and intended to let motorists know of the location of “hospitals” which was intended to mean an operational emergency room with a Physician on-call so that if motorists needed access to that care, especially if traveling in unfamiliar areas, there was an indication of where that was available. Leaving the “H” sign uncovered when that service is not available could potentially delay access to needed care when people presume the service is available and then present only to find it is not.” “As I said,” explained Gilson in an email. “This practice has been long standing, has been followed during any temporary or permanent suspension of emergency department services in many, many communities across the province and we have never had an issue as a result to my knowledge.” “If there are concerns being raised about people not knowing where the Health Centre is then there are options for communities to consider i.e. erecting signs that say “Souris Health Centre” in addition to the “H” signs and we have certainly had communities that have done that especially when the emergency room has been suspended for prolonged periods of time or permanently. At this point Souris’ emergency department is open

the majority of the time so I wouldn’t anticipate this to be a significant issue but as I said if there are people raising concerns then certainly additional signage is an option,” Gilson concluded.

A wooden block covers the “H” (hospital) sign on the Island in Souris and on highways leading to the community and it has residents worried, saying that visitors to Town won’t know where the hospital is located if they are going to visit a patient. The sign is covered every Wednesday for a 24 hour period when there are no emergency services, a long-standing practice according to Prairie Mountain Health. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER

Work has begun on the senior’s three-plex located on Fourth Ave. West, Souris. Mark Fisher Contractors has the land leveled and ready to begin the building process. The plan is for a 55 plus building, and to date there is only one unit left. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER Our Cribbage players again needed six tables on Wednesday, March 23. The best score was made by Lorna Binions and Joan Dufily, and I am told that Lorna counted 28 points in one hand. The second prize went to Lyall Edgerton with Dennis Holms and Alva and Don Doherty finished in third place. Alva also won the 50-50 draw. Our clubroom was host to 23 Bingo players on Thursday, March 24. Marie Neilson and Darlene Dooley made three shouts each. Making two yells were Barb Gordon and Rae McBurney. Rae made her second holler on the Little House and shared the pot of $36 with Lee Johnson. Because Friday was Good Friday, our meat draw was held on Saturday, March 26. Attendance was down a little but that did not mean it was easier to win more than once. In fact, the only people to take home two packages of meat were Jessie Paul and Terri Van de Kerckhove. We would like to thank Plaza Petals for the donation of two lovely plants. The 50-50 draw was worth $109 and the lucky ticket belonged to Donna Russell. Perry Van de Kerckhove had a chance to put $3,931.50 in his pocket by picking the Ace of Spades. The Ace eluded him and the pot will be up for grabs again next week. We congratulated Larry Robins on his 75th birthday.

Adams breaking records with university bowling team

Stephanie Adams has been breaking records with her bowling team at William Penn University, where she is a junior. Stephanie is pictured here, bottom left at the Pabcon Youth Championships in Panama in 2015. The team came home with the bronze medal. PHOTO/SUBMITTED submitted Another US College bowling season has come and gone for William Penn University junior and Souris resident, Stephanie Adams. Competing in nine collegiate events, she would finish in the top 25 eight times and in the top 10 four times. During the last and largest tournament of the 2015 - 2016 season, the Hoosier Classic, Stephanie lead the women for the first 3 of 6 games, in which 427 college women bowled. By the end of the competition, our local lady would finish in 7th, just two pins behind 6th, with a 205.6 average. Overall, Stephanie would finish her season, placing 18th for all collegiate women bowlers competing in at least 20 games or more Tier 1 Events, with a 200 average over 29 games. She would also break the Lady Statesmen’s single game record, bowling a 289, rolling past the previous single game record of 279. As a team, the Lady Statesmen would finish most events in the middle of the pack. The team’s best result was when they finished first in an 11 team event called the Tital Invitational, which was held in Neenah, Wisconsin back in November. The very young team held their own and look forward to moving up the ranks next season. The team has signed

this year’s Iowa State High School Champion and hope to sign a second place finisher from the Nebraska State High School Championships. Rumour has it that two exceptional bowlers transferring in from Indiana Tech will also be joining the team next season. As the women’s bowling program continues to increase in size at William Penn University, Stephanie has been offered the opportunity to stay on after her final season, in 2016 - 2017, to help coach either the varsity or junior varsity lady’s team, while also being offered a full scholarship to obtain her Masters Degree in Business, a place to stay while she attends school and a small monthly remuneration to help with other bills. At the moment, Stephanie is undecided, but will use her final, senior year, to help with her make any future decision(s) when it comes to bowling. Finally, Stephanie plans to attend this year’s Queen’s Tournament being held in Las Vegas from May 20-26. This event provides female bowlers with an opportunity to compete against several pro bowlers from the PWBA. She hopes to finish in the top 64 but is really looking forward to the experience she will gain through such a renowned tournament within the bowling world.

Page 7, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, April 01, 2016 There are two novels of historical fiction for you to consider today. Pillars of Light, by Jane Johnson is set in the 12th century during the crusades of Richard the Lionheart. Much of the book is split between two unconnected stories: that of a Muslim girl caught in the siege of Akka, and that of a young English scam artist practicing his ‘art’ with his band of misfits. In the beginning I found much irritating about the book. I generally dislike stories that bounce between characters, situations or time frames, and this tale certainly did that. I also have never managed to believe in instant love – and that’s how this tale begins. Zohra, a young Muslim girl, meets Nathanael, a young Jewish doctor, in the bazaar of Akka and falls so immediately in love that she ignores all the cultural and religious taboos associated with their merely meeting, let alone loving. Hard to believe but that’s what happens, and much of the first part of her story revolves around their clandestine meetings. Meanwhile, in England, John Savage roams about the countryside faking religious miracles and relics. That activity eventually comes to an end when he and his gang are caught and subsequently pressed into service on behalf of governmental and religious authorities raising money and recruits for the Crusade. Eventually the two storylines converge, with the latter part of the tale focusing on the siege of Akka and its human cost. It is this last element – the effect of the war on people (both aggressors and besieged) – that I found engrossing. Zohra’s story, and the description of her family life both before and during the

siege, was interesting and, for me anyway, the book would have been as good, if not better, had the romantic element been omitted. Ultimately the book is about differences – in culture, religion, family life and so on – and how, superficial appearances to the contrary, at heart we are all much more similar than different. A Memory of Violets, by Hazel Gaynor, is another story that bounces between characters and time frames, though not as radically as in the previous tale. The chapters alternate between two stories: that of a pair of impoverished young sisters working as flower sellers in London during the 1870s; and that of Tilly, a young woman who, in 1912, comes to work in a home established for the destitute survivors of the flower girl trade. Connecting the two stories is Florrie, the elder of the two sisters. Already used to hardship at the

tender age of eight, she takes on the sole care of her disabled younger sister Rose when their mother dies. Devastated when they are accidentally separated and Rosie lost, Florrie spends the rest of her life searching for her sister. Long afterward, Tilly, having accepted the role of assistant housemother in the Training Home for Watercress and Flower Girls, discovers the diary Florrie left behind, and becomes somewhat obsessed with trying to find out what happened to Rosie. The description of the utter poverty and hardship endured by the flower sellers is extremely well done, and the story of the mission for flower girls is based on fact. Overall, while the story was a bit sappy in places and the ending a bit trite, I enjoyed it – particularly those parts that gave a glimpse into the rough trade and poverty that surrounded such gentle things as flowers.
