A healthy, new arrival unites two families
by Vern May Busying themselves at play, three Brandon youngsters are blissfully unaware that their mother is a hero to a couple who believed they might not ever have a family of their own. Ashley and Andrew Synyshyn’s children don’t yet understand the role that they played to inspire that decision as well. Yet, these happy, healthy youngsters were counted among the Synyshyn’s blessings when they decided to register Ashley as a surrogate mother on a national website pairing hopeful couples with people who could help them to realize their dream of parenthood. “My kids didn’t think a whole lot about it,” says Ashley of her
recent experience as a surrogate for a New Brunswick couple who until a year ago she had never known. “To them it seemed like this was something normal that all moms do for others.” For the local family, Ashley and Andrew felt blessed to have three children - a six year old and a pair of two year old twins. Ashley felt that registering as a surrogate allowed the opportunity to share her good fortune with another family that might not get to experience the joy of children otherwise. “In the grand scheme of things, it’s really a short amount of time to give a gift to someone that they wouldn’t otherwise experience,” says Ashley. “For me, it has been the most
amazing and fulfilling experience of my life.” Ashley was matched with a Moncton, NB
couple - Joel and Courtenay Hamilton. Courtenay had undergone oncology treatments and as a result of the aggressive battle to combat cancer was informed by her doctor somewhat directly that: “You can’t have kids, period. The end.” As the couple began to investigate their options, they were exploring adoption when they learned about the possibility of surrogacy. In Canada, fewer than 400 surrogate matches are made each year. Through the process, many surrogates and future parents become friends but for both the Synyshyn’s and the Hamilton’s they are delighted to see how close both families have become over the past several months. “Our relationship with Ashley is so perfect, it’s almost hard to believe,” says Courtenay Hamilton. “Ashley was amazing at keeping us updated with photos and reports from doctors’
appointments. It was like we were there every step of the way.” For both families, their journey reached a joyous milestone with the birth of a little girl on Wednesday, November 16, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Riley Ann Hamilton weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 20 inches in length. Upon arrival, Riley was immediately handed over to Courtenay and Joel to bond with her family. Ashley joined them for a visit a few hours later. Some might think that after nine months it would be difficult to part with the precious bundle but Ashley provides some perspective. “I went into this with a clear focus,” she says. “I looked at [this pregnancy] as giving a baby back to a family, not giving a baby up.” Though the Hamilton’s have returned home to Moncton to an anxious throng of friends and relatives eager to meet their new baby girl,

they did spend a week in Westman following Riley’s birth before departing. For these two families, the birth of a baby girl isn’t the end of the story but instead just the first chapter of what looks to be a lifelong relationship. “We plan to have Ashley’s family in Riley’s life,” says Courtenay. “She’s family and we will be telling our daughter the story of her Auntie Ashley so that she knows what this woman did for her.” For Ashley, she is looking forward to keeping updated on Riley’s progress and staying connected with Courtenay in the months ahead. Closer to home, Ashley says that with her own children becoming more mobile and active recreationally, the schedule on her horizon looks quite full. While she could consider surrogacy again in the future, she suggests that others who think they can do it should explore it.

you take your vehicle out of park,” said Keith. Studies like these are just one example of the important work conducted by COPP groups throughout Manitoba in cooperation with local law enforcement. COPP members volunteer their time to make their communities safer by patrolling, deterring crime, and making our roads safer. Last year, COPP volunteers provided nearly 15,000 patrol hours and 23,000 hours of other volunteer service related to the program. About COPP This year marked the 25th anniversary of COPP. It’s a grassroots program specifically designed to serve as a highly-visible
crime deterrent. If someone is interested in joining a COPP group or starting one in their community, training and equipment are provided at no charge. Prior to participating in COPP patrols, all new members receive training delivered by one of COPP’s certified instructors, as well as a training manual. In addition, new members are provided with one-on-one supervision with an experienced member during their first patrols. Too many people still not using seatbelts: Manitoba Public Insurance More than 600 people were not wearing a seatbelt during an observational driver study conducted this October by Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) groups in rural Manitoba. A total of 13 rural locations were selected with a dozen COPP groups participating. The study is done in partnership with local RCMP detachments and conducted twice a year in the spring and fall. The average seatbelt compliance rate from the October study was 94.7
per cent - a decrease of 0.4 per cent from spring 2016. Cellphone use by drivers was also observed, with 98.7 per cent of drivers complying with the law. “Drivers and passengers need to do everything they can to keep themselves and others safe on our roads,” said Crown Services Minister Ron Schuler. “Thanks to the hard work of these volunteer citizens, we now have more information on these safety issues and can use it to raise awareness that wearing seatbelts and

not driving distracted can make a real difference.” A person is 35 times more likely to be killed and five times more likely to be seriously injured when not wearing a seatbelt. Every year in Manitoba, about 30 per cent of road fatalities involve unbelted vehicle occupants. “A 0.4 per cent decline in rural seatbelt use may not seem significant but with the number of road deaths that have occurred on our provincial highways so far in 2016, and the fact that seat belt use can literally make the difference between life and death in a serious motor vehicle col-
lision, these observational studies are important and help to raise awareness about the simple steps that drivers and passengers can take to keep themselves safe in the event of a collision,” said Ward Keith, vice-president, Business Development & Communications and chief product officer, Manitoba Public Insurance. “The message here is so simple; wear your seat belt all the time, no matter how long or short your trip is. And for drivers, make sure all of your passengers are buckled up and children are properly secured in child restraint seats before

by Grant Moffatt The Cougars saw a three game winning streak come to an end with a pair of losses this past weekend. The Cougars were outscored 10 to 5 in the two games giving up five goals to Kenora on Friday night and then another five to Pembina Valley in a battle of sixth place teams on Sunday in Morden. Kenora jumped out to a three goal first period lead. The Cougars came out like they had left their skates behind and saw the Thistles score three even strength goals. Kenora took a four goal lead in the fifteenth minute of the second before Callum Fortin won the draw to the right of Tyler Szturn and Caley Barscello buried the biscuit at 16:53. Kenora restored the four goal lead before the period ended with a power play goal with 27 seconds left in the period. Randy Cooke took over from Riley Wallace to start the third and shut the door the rest of the way. Callum Fortin found the back of the net 7 minutes into the
third with Jory Nychuk and Rylen Gudnason picking up the apples. Bryce Young finished the scoring with time winding down with help from Dylan Fontaine and Tanner Lawrence in on the goal. Kenora outshot the Cougars 34 to 24 on the night. Dexter Dalgleish joined Mike Tilbury in the sick bay and Jordan Chudley hit the showers 4 minutes into the second period when he was given a game misconduct for checking from behind. The battle with the Hawks saw the Cougars get off to a great start when Josh Wiens fired the puck from a bad angle and it found net for the lead 95 seconds into the game. The Hawks tied the game on a turnover at 8:13 and then Kolton Shindle won a foot race to give the Hawks the lead before the period ended. The Hawks upped the lead with a power play goal and an even strength goal as they continued to fire the puck at Randy Cooke in the Cougar’s net for a three goal lead after the second. The third
saw the Cougars try to claw back into the game and Tanner Andrew fired a shot from the high slot with Dylan Fontaine picking up the helper. The Cats couldn’t get any closer and the Hawks closed it out with an empty net goal for the 5-2 win as the teams met for the first time this season. The Hawks outshot the Cougars 28 to 26. These two teams will meet in Deloraine on December 21 in a 7:30 start time. Bryce Young joined the sick bay Sunday and Jordan Chudley sat out with a one game suspension. Tanner and Austin Clyne joined the roster for the Sunday game, The Parkland Rangers visit the den on Friday night looking for their eighth win and then the Cougars travel to Central Plains on Saturday afternoon to take on the 13-8 Capitals.

It seems a number of books have come out, just in time for Christmas. As always, some are good, some not so good. I present some that I have read recently. ‘Mischling’, by Affinity Konar, is a good book but one with a fairly somber subject. It tells the story of Pearl and Stasha, 12-year old twins sent to Auschwitz, there to be subjected to Dr. Mengele’s infamous experiments. During the
course of the winter, Pearl disappears and the story becomes that of Stasha’s search for her and of her attempts to come to grips with life without her twin. As the war nears completion, Stasha escapes during a relocation march. She returns to what’s left of her home, there to search for her father (her mother having gone with the girls to Auschwitz) while always keeping alive the hope that she will find Pearl. It was an okay story, more upbeat than you’d expect, and one which, while not as graphic as it might have been (thankfully), nonetheless provides an
insight into another aspect of the horrors attendant upon the internment and extermination camps of WWII. ‘The Witches of New York’, by Ami McKay, was a bit of a disappointment for me. I very much liked McKay’s previous two books (‘The Birth House’ and ‘The Virgin Cure’) but found this most recent offering not up the same standard. It tells of three witches in 1880s New York. Two – Eleanor and Adelaide – are mature ladies who now operate a tea shop, while providing clients with advice ‘from the other side’ as a sideline. Into their lives comes Be-
atrice, a young and naïve girl with a distinct affinity for the mystical. The story follows these three as Beatrice learns more of her ‘craft’, but when she suddenly vanishes the book turns into something of a thriller. All of this takes place at what, for me, was a pace too slow to maintain my interest. The first 200 pages really are more ‘scene setting’ and, again for me, this is just too long. The pace did accelerate in the final half of the book, but I was left feeling that the story would have benefitted from the services of a good editor. Don’t misunderstand – it’s a good enough story, but one that
requires patience to get into. I had no such difficulty with ‘The Whistler’, by John Grisham. While not a big fan of either Grisham or the genre, I enjoyed this book well enough. At its heart is a corrupt judge, long in league with a shadowy gang called the Coast Mafia and its even more shadowy leader. Knowledge of their crimes comes to the attention of Lacy Stoltz and her partner Hugh, both investigators for the Florida Board of Judicial Conduct, when they are contacted by Greg Myers, a disbarred lawyer now acting as a go-between linking the ‘whistle blower’
to the Board. The investigation leads to murder, then to the discovery of a miscarriage of justice involving another murder, and finally to a possible third murder when Myers vanishes. Add in the fact that both prime investigators fall victim to violence, and that more is threatened, and you have a storyline which keeps rolling right along. Much of it is ‘stock’, of course, and I seriously doubt that gangs, corruption and the like can be brought to bay in quite this way, but I’ve read far worse. For those of you who enjoy thrillers, this might be just the thing with which to pass a few snowy, cold days.

On Wednesday, November 23, we needed 6 ½ tables for our Cribbage players. Alva and Don Doherty finished the evening with the highest score. Joan Dufily with Lorna Binions took second prize and Deb Robinson with Norm Davis ended in third place. The 50-50 draw was won by Dennis Holms. The last
Cribbage evening of 2016 will be held on Wednesday, December 14, and will restart on Wednesday, January 4, 2017. Our Clubroom was host to 24 potential noisemakers ready to play Bingo on Thursday, November 24. Definitely the loudest people of the evening were Darlene Dooley and Gladys Skoc. They each hollered four times. Double shouts came from Betty Devins, Lil Atchison, and Jack Rose. Jack made his last yell on the Little House which amounted to
$45. The last Bingo evening of 2016 will be held on Thursday, December 22, and will restart on Thursday, January 5, 2017. The Souris-Glenwood Firefighters took over the meat draw on Friday, November 25. It was great to see such a large crowd come out to support them. There were many extra draws and winning tickets were well spread over the Clubroom but very few multiple winners. The only one to do this was Brent Fallis and he collected three times. Must have
stuffed his pockets with good luck charms. Marc Belon won the Souris Railway Museum ticket. Gale Collinson held the magic number on the 50-50 draw and received $230. The Firefighters also offered a very tasty roast beef dinner. I am told they made $1,750.50 which will be used for the purchase of extra equipment. The pot for “Chase the Ace” was worth $1,727 and Jeff Kohut tried his hand at finding the Ace of Spades. Since he did not find it, we will be offering someone a
chance again next week. We have received Volume 7 of the Military Recognition Books. If you wish a copy, please come to the clubroom. There is no charge for this very interesting publication. Our 2017 membership cards are now available. The cost is $45. Hope to see you at our Craft/Vendor Sale on Saturday, December 10. It starts at 1:00 p.m. ends at 4:00 p.m. As well as many different articles for sale, you will be able to enjoy a piece of cheesecake and
coffee for $4. Plaza Petals will be at the Clubroom on Monday, December 12, to conduct a “Christmas Centrepiece Workshop”. Please contact or drop into the Clubroom for more information. Also planned is a paint night with Kathleen Legasse. Date is not yet known. REMEMBER: Our General Meeting to elect the 2017 executive will be on Tuesday, December 20, starting at 8:00 p.m. All members please plan to attend.

Saving on taxes
submitted Souris Glenwood Foundation, along with MNP, held an informative Coffee Party on November 10 at Murphy’s. Tax incentives and estate planning were the focus of Matt Bolley’s presentation. Matt is a tax specialist with MNP in Brandon. His presentation highlighted the tax benefits of donating to local foundations and charities. Such benefits are: 1. Once you have made donations of $200 in a given year, any additional donations are eligible for a tax credit equal to 46.4%, so a donation of $1,000 will only
PAGE 7, SOURIS PLAINDEALER, SOURIS, MB, DECEMBER 02, 2016 cost you $536. 2. When an individual donates shares in a publically traded company and/or mutual fund units to a charity, they not only receive a donation tax receipt for the full value of the donation, but they are exempt from paying capital gains tax on any appreciation in the investments! 3. There are new rules in the Income Tax Act that allow an Estate the flexibility to allocate donations made by the Estate to various tax returns in order to minimize the overall taxes owing. A donation to the Souris Glenwood Foundation is a “gift that goes on giving forever in our community”. Donations can be made throughout the year to Souris Glenwood Foundation, Box 518, Souris, MB R0K 2C0.

Winter storm rages throughout Southwestern Manitoba What seemed like a dream fall and early winter, as grass remained green and temperatures above freezing, came to a screeching halt with the arrival of the first winter storm of 2016–2017. Residents woke up November 28 to a storm system that seemed to stall over the southern part of Manitoba. Snowfall accumulations upwards of 30 cm were reported in the Souris area, and roads were nearly impassable. As of November 30, the snow had stopped, but snow- and ice-packed roads and uncertain conditions forced the closure of the entire Southwest Horizon School Division. Above, ice and slush prevent this semi driver from making a clean merge onto Highway 2 east of Souris Tuesday, November 29; halting traffic for a short time as he tried to regain traction. Many traffic mishaps were reported throughout the province.
