A piece of Souris history on display in Austin

Darlene Bastian was in Austin to watch the threshing demonstration earlier this summer. She, along with her husband Blair, were impressed to find a piece of Souris history on display. Darlene is seen here beside the old flour mill engine that was used from 1899 – late 1920s. PHOTO/SUBMITTED by Darci Semeschuk Once an integral part of life on the prairies, the old Souris mill engine is on display in Austin. A signboard near the display says, “Made available by Geoff Symons and United Grain Growers, reassembled at present location in 1975”. It all began in 1899 when George McCulloch, a still-familiar surname in Souris and his partner and William Herriot purchased the engine for a cost of $70,000. They were already operating flourmills in Rapid City and Souris but jumped at the chance to purchase this engine. They made a deal with the makers, Goldie McCulloch Co., who just happened to be a brother to George. A belt made of 52 cowhides, three layers thick, ran the 185 horsepower behemoth. When fully operational the mill processed 1,600 bushels of wheat in a 24 hour period resulting in 700 bags of flour. The steam was supplied from four horizontal re-

turn turbine boilers with an excellent draft created by a brick chimney 100 feet high. The boiler pressure was 120 pounds per square inch with cold water for the condenser circulated by a steam pump from a well adjacent to Plum Creek behind the mill and the return was poured back into the creek. Another steam pump returned the condensed water to the boilers. The speed of the flywheel was about 90 revolutions per minute. The belt-driven smaller wheel was fixed to a shaft that traversed the length of the mill and drove further shafts on some of the four floors above. Mine-run Estevan coal was brought in by the rail car on the spur line behind the mill. About 8.5 tons per hour was used. This necessitated a fireman constantly and the man in charge for the greater time of its use was Robert Mitchell who retired in 1928. The mill was run steady until the late 1920s

and in the first 20 years, for the most part, 24 hours a day, six days a week. In November 1908 George McCulloch and Sons bought Mr. Herriot’s share. The sons were Hugh W., Richard J., and William C., who continued the business after the death of their father in 1916. It was probably last run about 1927 to make some flour and to do some chopping as recently as 1930. The cost of production, handling and sales of this type of operation made it uncompetitive and with the owners approaching retirement age, they sold it and the engine was never used again. In 1938 they sold the mill to McCabe Grain Co. who in turn sold it to United Grain Growers in more recent years. The McCabe Co. removed the machinery, making a seed plant but left the engine on its foundation. The engine eventually made its way to Austin where it now sits on display at the Agricultural Museum in that town.

Souris District Donor’s Choice celebrates 20 years & over $1 Million in donations Established in early 1996, the original executive members included Ferg Devins, Lil Staples, Georgina Kettle, Max Webber, Ken Sabad & Heather Tymoschuk. They may not have believed that 20 years later the town-wide canvas would produce over $1 million dollars to 25 deserving regional and local charities. The objective of Souris District Donors Choice is to conduct one organized yearly canvass to receive monies in trust for payment to 25 recognized local and regional charities. Donor’s Choice operates solely as a canvassing organization. The town-wide door-to-door canvas takes place every

Tentative agreements reached between Canada Post and CUPW Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have reached an agreement (albeit a tentative one), thus avoiding a work disruption that CUPW had twice postponed since the two sides entered into negotiations with a mediator last Friday. CUPW’s negotiating committee unanimously recommended the agreements - one each for urban and rural workers - to its national executive board, who, in turn, are recommending that the membership ratify them. The agreements are for two years, rather than the usual fouryear agreements that have been negotiated in the past. In its statement, Canada Post indicated that the two-year agreements would avoid a work disruption and allow more time to examine issues facing the Crown Corporation, including declining mail volumes and rising pension costs, and the best way to address them. Details of the agreements can be found on the CUPW website. CUPW has yet to set a date for the ratification vote. In the meantime, it will be business at usual at post offices across the country.

April and the funds are distributed to each of the charities at the Annual General Meeting held every November. The average yearly amount raised every campaign is just over $50,000. Committee members are anxious to see this year’s campaign tally. Donation forms are accepted right up until the deadline of September 30. Donor’s Choice not only gives much needed money to charities, it funds research, provides help for those in need, support for families, funds the purchase of much needed equipment, preserves community history, invests in children and the local community and the list goes on and on.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the help of countless volunteers ranging from Committee members, past and present, canvassers, volunteer auditor and local businesses who have supported Donor’s Choice from the beginning. Recognition must also be made to long-time corporate supporters Enbridge Pipeline and Manitoba Hydro staff as well as the local Souris Legion members. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact one of the current Committee members: Ken Wiebe, Betty Tanguay, Rae McBurney, Roxy Kowalchuk, Bev McGregor or Lisa Tosh.

Congratulations to our senior golfers! Dave Johnson, Bob Balbar, Norm Davis and Clair Edmunds travelled to St. Francis, ON, last weekend to participate in the Provincial Golf Tournament. They did very well indeed by coming home as the Senior Legion Golf Champions. Our meat draw evening of Friday, August 26, was well attended and winning tickets were well spread over the Clubroom. Only Bob Edgerton was able to collect two packages of meat. The 50-50 draw was worth $91 and the lucky number belonged to Cheryl Edwards. Don

Smith had the opportunity to take home $430 by finding the Ace of Spades. The Ace refused to come out of hiding and so it will be up for grabs again next week. We held our golfing fun day on Saturday, August 27. It was a great day for the event and 40 people participated in the Par 3 tournament and then returned to the Legion Clubroom for more fun. Approximately a dozen more people joined them for a barbecue steak supper with all the trimmings including fresh corn on the cob donated by Darren Janz. Before and during supper, enjoyable musical entertainment was provided by Surewin. Clair Edmunds won the lawn chair. PLEASE NOTE: Cribbage starts at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7, and Bingo starts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 8.

It’s never too late to pause and to savour the perfume of petals, the song of the birds. It’s never too late to say that you’re sorry, to offer your friendship, or bury your hate. To send up a prayer, or to simply say “thank you”, it just takes a second -- it’s never too late! If ever you are moving, or just cleaning house, and find wool that you are not going to do anything with anymore, cute fancy buttons, or wooden hangers, we could use them for crafts for us or ADP to use, and we have a few wonderful Seniors who love to knit and will make your extra wool into something for others to use and for Christmas hampers, too. Your unwanted things can be made into lots of fun, useful things for others to enjoy! Thank you in advance and hope to hear from you soon. You can drop them off at our office or I could come and pick them up. We make visits to the Hospital and Personal Care Home, also to you homes if you would like. Just give us a call and let us know what day or time works best for you, and we will do our best to come then. That’s all for this week. Take care and we hope to hear from you soon.

The Hail Report The Canadian Crop Hail Association Release date: August 25, 2016 Early harvest conditions make check strips imperative Despite delays caused by wet conditions and high humidity in many regions, harvest is progressing steadily across the Prairies. With high numbers of hail claims continuing well into August, adjusters are working hard to get affected areas assessed as quickly as possible. Sufficient evidence must be left in hail-damaged fields to allow adjusters to make accurate assessments. If a field is ready to be harvested before assessment has been made, farmers are urged to check company websites or contact their insurance provider for specific details about appropriate check strips as requirements can vary among insurers. Farmers should also inform adjusters about desiccant or other chemical treatments ahead of the assessment to ensure fields are entered only when safe to do so. Alberta Widespread showers and thunderstorms continued to dominate weather patterns over the past two weeks but crops have continued to ripen and harvest is underway across the province. Hail claim numbers are well above average, approaching record levels. Adjusters are working through a large backlog of claims from this busy hail season. Storm dates and locations of significance for this period included: August 8: Calmar August 9: Crossfield, Daysland, Irricana, Torrington, Carbon, Innisfail, Penhold, Red Deer, Lacombe, Ponoka, Mirror, Clive, New Norway, Meeting Creek, Killam, Lougheed, Sedgewick, Galahad, Vermilion, Clandonald, Mannville, Welling, Nobleford, Barons, Picture Butte, Lethbridge, Lomond, Cardston, Vulcan, Three Hills, Wrentham, Milo August 14: New Dayton, Milk River, Warner, Spring Coulee, Pincher Creek, Cardston, Raymond, Vulcan, Muldare August 15: New Dayton, Milk River August 16: Camrose, Edberg, Ferintosh, Holden, Levoy, Round Hill August 22: Nampa Saskatchewan Weather remained unsettled over the past two weeks with continued rainfall in many regions. Overall, harvest is progressing steadily despite being hampered by wet conditions in many areas. Crop yields are anticipated to be above the five-year and ten-year averages across all crops, with the exception of chick peas and lentils. Storm dates and locations of significance for this period included: August 8: Lestock, Esk, Denzil August 10: Birsay, Fir Mountain, Climax, Frontier, Consul, Robsart, Maple Creek, Glentworth, Gull Lake, Kyle, Fillmore August 11: Richmound, Mankota, Gull Lake, Carlyle, Manor August 12: Manor August 14: Neilburg, Glentworth, Mankota August 15: Zenon Park

Manitoba Sporadic rainfall, high humidity and wet fields have slowed progress in some areas but harvest continues as weather and field conditions allow. A storm on August 15 caused widespread damage across a large area of the province. The damage from an August 19 storm is still being determined, but that system appears to have been small and localized. The number of hail claims received to date, as well as total losses paid, are both well above the five-year average. Storm dates and locations of significance for

Pallister government must be more open with Manitobans about Zika Virus Threat: Wiebe

The Pallister government must start respecting the right of Manitobans to know when a serious disease such as Zika is present in the province, NDP MLA Matt Wiebe said recently. “Zika Virus can cause serious birth defects and families need to be aware of its presence so they can take precautions, said Wiebe, the NDP health critic. “It’s unconscionable for the government to ignore the risks and fail to notify families of the spread of the virus in the province.

Wiebe called on the Pallister government to post the most up-to-date information on the number and locations of confirmed cases of Zika on the Manitoba Health website as soon as possible. As well, Wiebe urged the government to offer more information through the media about the possible threat and prevention of the disease. In the US, health officials monitor the presence of the virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, and offer timely information to the public. According to published re-

ports, the Pallister government has only acknowledged two confirmed cases of Zika in the Province. However, the actual number is five - which could indicate a greater risk than previously thought, Wiebe said. “We’ve seen the tragic consequences of Zika in South America, where so many babies were born with microcephaly, Wiebe said. “The lack of information here leaves families guessing about the seriousness of the threat and unable to determine the best course of action to protect themselves.
