Souris MLA appointed to Pallister cabinet
by Glen Kirby Wawanesa native and local politician Cliff Cullen has been named Minister of Growth, Enterprise and Trade in the new provincial government. It’s the first time in more than 16 years that a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Souris and district has held a cabinet position. “I’m very excited about this,” said Cullen, as he moved into his new office in Winnipeg. “This is a great opportunity and I’m really happy.” Cullen, MLA for Spruce Woods, is one of 12 ministers in Premier Brian Pallister’s streamlined cabinet sworn-in Tuesday at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg. The cabinet is a third smaller than the previous under former New Democratic Party Premier Greg Selinger, even though Pallister had a record 40 MLAs to choose from following the Progressive Conservative election victory in April. “We think the size is more in line with other jurisdictions,” said Cullen. “There will be no shortage of work and we’ll be calling on other MLAs to help out.” Cabinet has four women and is rich in rural representation - eight ministers hail from ridings outside of Winnipeg although neither Brandon MLA was called to the inner circle. “I feel that over the years, the rural voice has been lost,” said Cullen, who views the current cabiHighlighted calls for service in Souris R C M P area were as follows: On April 24 a report of a fraud was reported to Souris Detachment. The victim worked as a mystery shopper and was paid several thousands of dollars. The bank later advised that it was a fraudulent charge. This file remains unsolved. On April 26, Police responded to a potentially suicidal female. The female was arrested under the Mental
net lineup as positive. “It’s about building relationships.” First elected in 2004, Cullen won the former riding of Turtle Mountain after Merv Tweed resigned to run for a Federal seat. Tweed, the last local MLA in cabinet, was a minister in the Gary Filmon government that was defeated by the New Democrats in 1999. Cullen was re-elected in 2007 and again in 2011 in Spruce Woods after Turtle Mountain was abolished as part of electoral redistribution. He handily recaptured Spruce Woods in last month’s Provincial election, earning nearly 3 of every 4 votes and besting the next nearest contender by 4,445 votes. In opposition, Cullen served as the Deputy House Leader and in a number of critic portfolios including Healthy Living, Seniors and Consumer Affairs and the Liquor Control Act. Previous to politics, he worked in the agricultural and environmental sectors, and as an insurance broker. As minister, Cullen says he will focus on economic development and job creation. “We want to join with other western provinces in the New West Partnership,” he says, a trade alliance and barrier-free investment zone involving BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Cullen will also focus on creating a premier’s advisory group on development, enhancing tourism and improving access to venture capital.
Health Act and transported to hospital. On April 29, Police responded to a 9-1-1 hang up. Turns out, the caller had accidentally called RCMP telecoms instead of the admin line for the Detachment. The caller assured that she was OK as she stood in the Detachment! On April 31, someone stole several items from a recreational vehicle that was parked at a local business. If you have information regarding this crime, please notify Brandon Detachment at 204-726-7522. Fraud Alert: Part 10 Job and Employment Scams Job and employment scams target

ing the most noise was Gale Collinson with four shouts. Her last holler was on the Little House, which was worth $27. Coming close behind Gale with three yells were Val Davis, Alys Will, and Marie Neilson. Jack Rose won twice. Doris Dron shouted only once but was able to claim $75 on the Snowball. Our meat draw of Friday, April 29, was a slower evening due, I think, to the fact that the large pot on “Chase the Ace” was won two weeks ago. However, it was still a fun evening and no one carried a lucky charm. There were no multiple collections of meat packages. Joan Dufily held the lucky ticket for
the 50-50 draw and received $87. Well, it happened again. We had just started a new pot for the Ace of Spades last week and it was found tonight. Cliff Long went home with a win of $371. We were offered a meal of ribs, rice, fresh veggies, garlic toast, and apple pie. On Saturday, April 30, we held our Sports Day of snooker, darts, shuffleboard and crib. Didn’t have as many teams as we had hoped but everyone who participated definitely enjoyed themselves. A variety of tasty snack food was available. It is hoped that we will be able to have this type of event again.
• Blow dry bottles: Use a blow dryer to dry the insides of bottles you plan to reuse for storing grains or beans. A thorough drying prevents mold from forming. • Sew buttons on with unwaxed dental floss. It’s stronger than thread and will stand up to wear and tear. • When windshield wipers become dirty and streak the windshield, wash them well with baking soda and water. • A second use for a Lazy Susan: put it under a large planter that needs to be turned to give every side of the plant some light! That’s all for this week. Hope you can be outside to enjoy the sunshine before it gets too hot. Be sure to let us know if you would enjoy a home or hospital visit. Take care and we hope to

Page 4, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, May 06, 2016 Female training considerations Female athletics has changed a great deal ever since Title IX was passed in 1972, which stated that no one on the basis of gender should be discriminated against in sport. Ever since 1972, you have seen the same number of men and women in sport, namely at the collegiate level. This has sparked a great rise in female athlete participation and I see it first hand in southwest Manitoba. I will be the first one to recognize how hard females work to try and capitalize on opportunities that have arisen. Every month I get two journal subscription from the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), due to my professional memberships as both a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and as a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT). For the month of April, the Strength & Conditioning Journal, the professional journal of the NSCA, focused solely on the female athlete. From there, I wish to highlight two pieces of important information our female athletes should take into consideration: proper calorie intake to maintain energy and the use of neuromuscular warm-ups to prevent injury. As a female athlete, you should know that is there is always the chance of a lack of energy availability known as the female athlete triad. The female athlete triad, also known as relative energy deficiency in sport, is comprised of disordered eating, menstrual cycles, and low bone min-
eral density. Why is this important you may ask? If you do not have the proper energy availability and calorie intake, you may be at risk. As a strength and conditioning professional, we consult with our athletes about the need for proper calorie intake and are aware of female athlete triad signs such as a stress fracture, recurring illness or injury, a decrease in physical performance, severe weight loss, or amenorrhea. If you feel that any of the above occurr, contact your physician immediately. I have not seen this first hand, but I know that there are many females that try to cut out calories due to worries of physical appearance. Instead of cutting out calories, you must focus on ingesting nutritious foods that are high in energy. The majority of research done in the past has been done with male subjects, but this particular article focused on strength training and metabolic conditioning for female soccer players. Their research confirmed that elite athletes have heightened physical attributes such as high-intensity running performance, repeated-sprint ability, and speed, but there is also the need for proper neuromuscular training to set yourself on the the right path in becoming elite athlete. I found this very interesting because the more I read, the more I find research overlap. Just like the University of Calgary research that we posted last week, http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/soccer-injury-prevention-study-university-calgary-1.3534236, the need for proper neuromuscular warm-ups are needed for all sports, plus both genders, to prevent injury. This article is hopefully informative, but I hope you understand that this is a way of myself thanking all of the female athletes that come to see me, or any of the other strength coaches, at Outperforme Athletics who work so incredibly Leslie Chudley hard. It is these girls that Sales Associate motivate me to learn more about strength & condi-
tioning, to put in the extra work to make sure they are getting the proper programming, to read the monthly professional journals, and motivate the next generation of female athletes. I don’t tell you girls it enough, but I am extremely proud and honoured to train ALL of you, as I am sure the rest of the Outperforme coaches are as well. Outperforme Athletics is proud to educate our surrounding communities and share our knowledge base. Please feel free to contact me with any comments, questions, or suggestions for future articles at jon@outperforme.com

OBITUARY Rae, Dennis November 6, 1931 ~ April 24, 2016 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear father Dennis Edward Rae at the age of 84 years, after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson’s Disease at the St. Boniface Hospital. He will be forever missed by his children Ken (Carolyn), Colleen (Perry), Shannon (Jim); his grandchildren Trevor (Danielle), Jason (Luanne), Jennifer, James; and his two great-grandchildren Sophie and Emma. He will also be missed by his siblings Nina (Chuck), Connie (Nick) and Dorothy. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Catherine Rae; his three wives, Dorothy, Mina and Joyce; and also by his siblings Frank, Les, Peter, Jean, Tina, Annie, and Elsie. Dad was born in Two Creeks, MB, and spent his growing years in that locale living and working on their farm with his 10 siblings. In Souris, MB, Dad met the love of his life, Dorothy, whom he married in 1954. Through the years they added more love to their lives with Ken, Colleen and Shannon. Dad worked as a heavy equipment operator for 42 years for the Municipality of Glenwood. As retirement drew closer, Mom succumbed to breast cancer, leaving Dad on his own. Retirement was a struggle until he met Mina whom he married and spent 10 wonderful years together travelling the world and enjoying life to the fullest. Mina passed away and Dad was alone again. He met Joyce, who he loved dearly, and they married in 2011 in Las Vegas and spent a short life together. She passed away in the spring of 2012. Dad moved to assisted living at Sterling House in Winnipeg. He loved his days there enjoying his music by playing guitar and harmonica, like never before. He was always willing to entertain anyone who cared to enjoy it with him. Our fondest memories of Dad were at our family holiday get-togethers, where he never missed out on many chuckles. Dad was a kind-hearted gentle soul and will always be remembered for his sweet nature. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Boniface Emergency, who are truly angels in disguise. Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Dennis’s life will be held at Faith Community Baptist Church in Souris, MB on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. A private interment in the Souris - Glenwood Cemetery will take place. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.kowalchuks.net
