Elvis has left the building
It was another amazing success for the Souris Curling Club. Survivor, Las Vegas, attracted huge crowds and pleased the community once again. Since its inception close to 20 years ago, this bonspiel has been one that has united the community of Souris and indeed the entire curling community. Despite your skill level, this fun and exciting event has something to offer everyone. Pictured: Local teams participate, hoping for a podium result (L-R): Paula Armour, Denise Luptak, Brenda McKinny, Val Dunbar, and Myrna Long. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER by Darci Semeschuk Only in Souris, and only at Survivor will you find Elvis Presley, or someone who looks like him, sort of. Mayor Darryl Jackson donned his best Elvis attire at the 2016 Souris Curling Club Survivor Las Vegas. The bonspiel, arguably one of the largest in Canada features 10 sheets of ice, many, many teams in both men’s and ladies events, costumed com-
petitors, lunches, dinners and dances and it lasts for nearly five days encompassing the entire Memorial Complex. That’s Souris’ Survivor Spiel and it’s been occurring, without a drop in popularity, for close to 20 years. Organizers work extremely hard to make this event a success and they do a great job. They manage to acquire tremendous sponsorship and funds
raised go back into the Complex and community. In addition to the Curling Club benefiting from the success of Survivor, many organizations also are offered the opportunity to take part. 2016 was another great years for the organizers of the Survivor Spiel and as the returning competitors all hope, as well as the community, the event will continue for years to come.
Manitoba Election: go vote April 19 by Tyler Bugg On April 19, Manitobans will be going to the polls again, this time to elect a new provincial government. Elections in this provincial election are very similar to the Federal election held last October. When we go to the polls in Manitoba, we will only be voting for the candidates in our riding for MLA – Member of the Legislative Assembly - and not directly for who will be the Premier of Manitoba. Voting is done with a “first past-the-post” method, where the person who gains the most votes will be named the winner.
There are 57 seats in the Legislative Assembly up for grabs, and the party that wins the most seats will get a chance to form the next government. If a party wins at least 29 seats, they will form a Majority government. If they get less than 29, but have more seats than any other party, they will form a Minority government. The leader of the party that has the most seats will be the Premier of Manitoba. There are three major parties that are running a full slate of candidates: the New Democratic Party (NDP) under current premier Greg Selinger, the current opposition Progressive-Conservative Party (PC)
under Brian Pallister, and Rana Bokhari’s Liberal Party. Other parties running in the election include the Green Party, the Manitoba Party, the Communist Party, and four independent candidates. The riding that Souris is in is Spruce Woods, and is currently represented by Cliff Cullen of the PCs, who is running for re-election. There are three other candidates in Spruce Woods: Amanda Chmelyk of the NDP, Liberal candidate Jaron Hart, and Malcolm McKellar of the Manitoba Party. So, why is this election important, and what is the provincial government’s role
in our every day lives? Manitoba’s government is responsible for such areas as health care, education, roads and infrastructure, social services, natural resources, municipal government and, of course, taxes, to name a few. A lot of these issues that are dealt with in Winnipeg are more close to home than many that are debated and passed in Ottawa. So, when we vote on April 19, we will be voting for the level of government that has to make decisions regarding schools, hospitals, highways, the PST, and flood control. So there is a lot at stake, so go vote! Every vote counts.

Souris-Glenwood has booth at Brandon Home Show by Lon Turner, Economic Development Officer for Souris Glenwood This coming weekend is the Brandon Home Show and SourisGlenwood will be an exhibitor. We’re there to promote our community and to get more people to want to move to Souris-Glenwood. For the display booth this year there will be a number of items to peak people’s interest as they pass by. We’ve made the booth display a little more unique this year by including a golf activity on an 8-foot putting green, a side banner with a beautiful picture of our bridge, displays of properties for sale,
our 2016 Community and Visitor Guidebook, and information about the potential new hotel and active adult living centre. Along with the golf activity, a hole-inone will earn promotional prizes ranging from free movie and pool passes to tickets to entertainment events to gifts from local Souris businesses. All golfing participants will be entered into a draw for a camp-fire package consisting of Souris Manitoba-labelled quality folding chairs, umbrella, beverage insulated cooler and water bottles which will be drawn on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Highlighted calls for service in Souris RCMP area were as follows: On March 29, a report of a high risk missing youth was reported to Police. Police tracked down the youth and she was returned to the group home. On the same date, Police received a call for concern about a vehicle on the side of the road on Highway 22. Police attended to, what turned out to be a blown tire. The registered owner obtained another wheel and was on his way. On March 30, you will be shocked to hear that another report of the Canada Revenue Agency Scam came to light. Luckily, this smart lady did not cave to the high pressure tactics. On March 31, a Souris resident reported two suspicious charges on her credit card. Police are awaiting a copy of her statement, meanwhile the credit card company is investigating. On April 1, the loud music from the neighbours was no joke to the complainant. Police attended and the music was turned down, with a promise that it wouldn’t happen again.

Donor’s Choice pledge sheets in the mail April 14 submitted What is Souris District Donor’s Choice? Every spring a donation campaign is conducted on behalf of a maximum 25 registered charitable organizations. You will receive a form in your mailbox listing all the charities that participate. You can designate an amount to any/all of the charities you are interested in supporting. Once you have completed your form and attached payment you can drop the form off at the designated location or give it to a Donor’s Choice representative who comes to your home during the town-wide canvass which is taking place from April 18-22, 2016. Using Donor’s Choice eliminates having 25 separate charities come to your door to solicit donations. It is easy to complete the form and you write a single cheque to support multiple charities. It benefits the charities in that they do not require as many volunteers to conduct door-to-door campaigns. One-hundred percent of all funds collected go directly to the charities. In 2016, Souris District Donor’s Choice will be campaigning on behalf of 25 charities including:
Alzheimer Society of Manitoba; Canadian Cancer Society; Canadian Mental Health Association, Westman Region; The Canadian Red Cross Society; Child and Family Services of Western Manitoba; The Counselling Centre; Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of Canada, Brandon Chapter; Elks and Royal Purple Fund of Children; Glenwood & Souris Regional Library; Heart and Stroke Foundation; The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Westman Office; Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Brandon & District Chapter; Seniors Organized Service of Souris Valley Inc.; Society for Manitobans with Disabilities Souris Cooperative; Daycare Centre Inc.; Souris and District Harvest Food Bank; Souris and District Heritage Club Inc.; Souris Fire Fighters Special Equipment Fund; Souris Glenwood Foundation; Souris Health Auxiliary, Special Equipment Fund; Souris and Area Palliative Care Committee; Special Olympics Westman; Souris Hillcrest Museum; Souris Fellowship Club - New to the list of charities for 2016. Once again the Souris District Donor’s Choice 2016 Campaign takes place April 18-22. Pledge forms will be in the mail April 14, 2016.

On Wednesday, March 30, it was nice to again need six tables for Cribbage players. Amelia Morden and Cindy Janz finished the evening with the highest score. Sandra McLaughlin with Donna Scott took secondplace and third prize went to Mona Canning with Les Morris. The winning ticket on the 50-50 draw was held by Lyall Edgerton. On Thursday, March 31, we had 23 people in the clubroom anxious to yell Bingo. Most of the noise came from Darlene Dooley as she shouted four times. Close behind her was Marie Neilson with three hollers and double yells came from Doris Dron, Gladys Skoc, Marg Rose, and Barb Gordon. Barb made her last call on the Little House received $32. It was busy evening at our clubroom during our meat draw on Friday,
April 1. Lucky tickets were well spread over the clubroom and no one was able to collect more than one meat package. Doris Dron held the winning number for the 50-50 draw and got $153. The “Chase the Ace” pot amounted to $4,118.50 and Arnold Matiowsky won the opportunity to take it home. Once again, the Ace of Spades stayed out of sight and will be offered again next week. On Friday, April 8, the Ladies Auxiliary will be offering a turkey supper, so please plan to come and stay for supper. Having read rather a steady diet of ‘serious’ books lately, I thought I’d treat myself to something light. And so I did, and have two very light but fairly enjoyable mysteries for you today. For me the lesser of the two was Death at Dovecote Manor, by Dorothy Cannell, the second in the Florence Norris series. You should be warned that the first book is referenced fairly frequently in this story so while it’s not necessary to have read that first one, it likely helps. The murder in this second volume is that of Kenneth Tenneson, a well-to-do elderly bachelor with two nasty sisters and a too-goodto-be-true ward. All signs point to an accidental death, Kenneth apparently having taken a fall down his stairs. The position of the body suggests something more sinister however, and the unexpected appearance of a new will seems to support this. Florence Norris, the housekeeper at a near-by manor who essentially solved the
Celebrating the ‘60s, Souris School reunion set for Winnipeg by Darci Semeschuk “The Sixties” was a decade of youth revolution in social norms about clothing, music, dress, formalities, schooling and much more. Many will remember the decade as one of irresponsible excess, flamboyance, and decay of social order. The decade was also labeled the “Swinging Sixties” because of the relaxation of social taboos. However you remember the sixties, they definitely left an indelible impression on society that exists even today. Souris and its youth were no different from the rest of the world and the survivors of that decade, the youth of the time want to celebrate with a school reunion to be held in Winnipeg, August 26 - 28. According to Donna (Kelesnik) Couvier, plans are well underway for the ‘60s survivors of Souris School. “We have made a tentative plan for the weekend which begins with a meet and greet at the Pony Corral Patio on Pembina in Winnipeg,” stated Couvier. “We will wind up the night with a pig roast and drinks.”
The weekend, which is open to anyone who had anything to do with Souris School throughout the 1960s, whether it be teachers, students or anyone else involved with the Collegiate at that time, will continue on Saturday with a slate of events and wind up on Sunday. Organizers have set up a special rate for hotel rooms at the Best Western on Pembina Highway are in the process of arranging billets for anyone who may prefer that. They also expect many people will choose to stay with a friend or relative. One thing is for certain, it will be a great time to connect with friends from that era. You can find out more information on the weekend, have a brochure mailed to you or register by contacting the following people: Donna (Kelesnik) Couvier 204-467-5455 and Fred Kelesnik 204- 746-8588. Replies would be appreciated before July 15, 2016. first book’s murder, is again tapped for help by the local police Inspector - a fairly unlikely occurrence but then this is fiction. Needless to say, through her powers of observation and persistence, Florence is able to piece together many disparate stories to reveal a startling secret in Tenneson’s past - which may or may not have anything to do with his murder but which does impact the lives of many more people than one might expect. The story progresses rather slowly and is very definitely dialogue-driven. Every group of characters has its say, sometimes to the point of irritation. But if you are looking for a mild, pleasant mystery, this might suit you perfectly. Another very light mystery is The Darling Dahlias and Eleven O’Clock Lady, by Susan Wittig Albert. The latest in yet another series (none of which I had read previously) the Darling Dahlias (a group of gardening ladies) really don’t come into this story, at least not as a group. Instead the book focuses on the murder of Rona Jean Hancock, a young telephone operator discovered strangled early one morning. Suspicion falls on the near-by Civilian Conser-
vation Corps camp (a Depression era work project in the States), with its compliment of young men eager for a good time. As the investigation proceeds, an anonymous tip suggests that murder might not be the only crime the camp is involved in - and from there the story progresses. A good, light mystery with a realistic Depression era feel in both character and dialogue. I also read Linwood Barclay’s Broken Promises. Unless you are a very patient sort, I’d advise against you doing the same. The mystery (actually several) is good but nothing is resolved in the end. Instead, it ends like a TV series cliff-hanger. Ooooh, it seems ‘he’ might be back! No mention of who ‘he’ might be, of course… I absolutely detest such things. As it turns out, this is the first book of a trilogy, the second of which - Far From True - has just been published. The murders left unresolved in the first book are further investigated here, as are new ones, but that’s all I can tell you as I have no intention of reading the book. I am not patient enough to wait a year for the third book to come out. If, indeed, anything is finally resolved even then.

Tax return choices - spend or invest? submitted by Edward Jones Many Canadians look forward to an annual tax refund from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It’s a mini-windfall and it’s tempting to spend the money on something frivolous. But there are other uses for your refund. When you use the money you receive wisely, it can pay big dividends over time. Here are a few suggestions for making the most of your refund. Invest in an RRSP. Use your tax refund to get an early start on your annual Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contribution. The sooner you get money into your RRSP, the sooner you take advantage of tax-deferred growth. Make up for missed RRSP contributions. You’re allowed to make up for missed contributions going back to 1991. Using your refund will increase your pool of tax-sheltered assets, potentially boost retirement wealth and create a larger tax deduction this year or in future years. Pay down or eliminate high-interest debt. Use your refund to pay down credit card balances, personal loans or other expensive debt. You’ll reduce interest costs. Pay down your RRSP loan. If you borrowed money to make an RRSP contribution, pay down the loan as soon as your refund arrives. Pay down the mortgage. Every dollar you put toward your mortgage principal
is a dollar on which you won’t pay interest for the next 5, 10 or even 25 years. Contribute to an RESP. Put money into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your children or grandchildren. An RESP is an excellent tax-deferred vehicle to save for post-secondary education. Spend a bit on yourself. It won’t hurt to spend a little of your refund on yourself. After all, you have to have some fun in your financial life. But try to limit it to 10% to 20%. Now here’s the bad news. You don’t really want a refund. That money you get back from the CRA every year is like an interest-free loan to the government. By paying more in taxes throughout the year than you should, you’ve let Ottawa use your money. Plus, you loose out on potential investment returns until your overpaid taxes are returned. If you regularly receive a refund, consider having the income tax deducted from your regular pay cheque reduced. Obtain a copy of Canada Revenue Agency Form T1213 (Request to Reduce Tax Deductions at Source) at your local tax office or on the CRA’s Internet site. Submit the form to the CRA, which will send you a letter of authority allowing your employer to reduce deductions during the year. Member Canadian Investor Protection Fund

RCAF show band Jet Stream performing in Souris
submitted by Chris McConnell Jet Stream is an internationally renowned 20-piece band that will be performing in Souris on Sunday, April 17, at 2:00 p.m. at the Souris Glenwood Community Hall. This premiere ensemble entertained Souris back in 2009 and was thoroughly enjoyed by the students in a school concert and adults in the evening. High School students commented “that they did not know the military could have so much fun” and a Grade 1 student sang his heart out all the way back to school with the song “Ring of Fire”. Jet Stream made quite the impression! This tour-de-force does it all... Rock, Pop, Country, R&B, Funk and Disco. With a diverse repertoire of classic and recent smashhits by superstar recording artists, Jet Stream appeals to audiences of all ages. Jet Stream has travelled as Far East as Busan, South Korea, for the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation of Seoul, south to Las Vegas for the Las Vegas International Tattoo and as far north as Iqaluit, showcasing their contemporary and cutting
edge approach while carrying on the important history and tradition of music in Canada’s Armed Forces. In 2011, Jet Stream debuted their ‘Made in Canada’ show, featuring songs by well-known Canadian recording artists from across Canada. This show continues to be a huge hit with audiences, especially during the yearly Canada Day celebrations and when the band travels internationally representing Canada and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Since ‘Made in Canada’, this dynamic group has continued to create innovating and engaging performances, delighting listeners and showcasing the skill, professionalism and teamwork espoused by members of the Canadian Armed Forces The Souris District Arts Council is excited to be wrapping up their concert series with this prestigious show band of 20 full time musicians. Jet Stream has quickly become one of the premiere ensembles of the Canadian Forces. Tickets are available at the door or call Sharon 204-483-2001. See you at the Concert!

Although you are active, you may only be focusing on one piece of the puzzle. We consider ourselves strength and conditioning professionals because we focus on a whole health & fitness approach. The three major areas we focus on are strength (muscular system), conditioning (cardiovascular system), and flexibility (joint mobility). I do not know of many jobs that would cover all three of these major elements. Working from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. is not enough. I laugh every time someone says, “You should follow me around for a day!” I know we are all busy but physically it just isn’t enough. It may be addressing your health needs to be moving throughout the day but it is not addressing your fitness needs. I watch athletes push themselves to their brink on a daily basis and it’s tiring just to watch, but it is a constant reminder of what I personally need to do to remain healthy and physically active. Here are a few things to think about: It is all about finding a balance and addressing what you need. A good percentage of our athletes train for their sport endeavours but there are those who train to meet their own personal fitness needs. For example, a grandmother works all day and found she was always having discomfort from sitting around the majority of her workday. She comes to the gym three times a week with the ladies group in order to be able to keep up with her active grandchildren after work and during the
weekend. She is able to primarily focus on her cardiovascular system, while training all three elements, and now feels she has energy to spare. Another reason to train is to prevent injury. If you are a constantly walking up and down stairs or on the move, you may want to start training to make those “work” days easier on your body. A strength training program allows your muscles to handle more impact and make them more durable and less susceptible to injury. Physiotherapists are constantly “rehabbing” people after they get injured, why not “prehab” your muscles so you can try to prevent injuries in the first place. Before you think if I train, I won’t get injured, I want to warn you… you will not completely avoid injuries, but you can at least try to limit them! The last and most important reason to be active, even if your job is physically taxing, is to give yourself a mental break. One of the best parts of working out is spending time for yourself, or with others with similar fitness goals, and to get away from the distractions of our busy world. It is a great way to relieve stress and a good way to increase the release of endorphins, which triggers happiness. This is exactly what everyone needs! Catherine Joyce King Catherine Joyce King (nee: McAuley) passed away at Valley View Care Centre, Brandon, MB, on Friday, April 01, 2016 at the age of 86. The funeral will be held Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 2:30 pm in the Hartney Centennial Centre, Hartney, MB. Joyce was born in Shoal Lake on May 11, 1929, the only daughter of Eric and Flossie McAuley (nee: Lind). She and her three brothers grew up on the farm near McAuley, MB, surrounded by the love of a huge extended McAuley family. Teachers were in short supply after WWII and at 17 years of age, Joyce tried her hand teaching in a small school near McAuley. This was not her forte, so she worked briefly in a woolen mill in Ontario before coming back to Manitoba. Joyce decided to become a telephone operator and in 1949 she began working in Minto. It was there that she met a young farmer by the name of Jim King. They were married in 1951 and he remained the love of her life for the next 65 years. Jim and Joyce farmed the home farm in the Croll/Elgin District until 1983 when they retired to Hartney. Joyce loved community work and she contributed many hours to every community she lived in. Joyce’s passions were music and singing, but her mainstay in life was her faith in God. She lived her life loving her family and friends, and doing kind deeds for others. We love her and are proud to call her our wife, mother and grandmother. Joyce is survived by her loving husband Jim; her two children, Kathie and Fred (Sandra) and her two precious grandsons Sanfred and Wheaton (Carlie); her brothers Allison (Trudy) and Walter (Dianne); brother-in-law Charlie (Doreen) and sister-in-law Margaret Flintoff; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Eric and Flossie McAuley; her brother and sister-in-law, Lind and Ethel McAuley; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Alfred and Mary King; brothers and sisters-in-law, Vera and Roy Young, Gladys Taylor, George and Marjorie King, Mary and Oly McCosh and George Flintoff. We would like to thank the staff at Valley View Care Centre for their excellent, loving care of Joyce, Dr. D. Caplan who truly understands the elderly, and special thanks to Jim’s niece, Isabelle Popple, who faithfully visited every Monday afternoon and took Joyce and Jim on a marvelous journey of remembering their youth, laughing at the many antics/happenings, and testing their memory on the history of an era. In Joyce’s memory, donations may be made to the Parkinson Society or the Alzheimer Society.

The Times Mariapolis wood carvers winter season comes to a close The Mariapolis Woodcarvers winter season of carving, under the direction of Marcel Fraser, ended for the season on March 21. For nine weeks, carvers gathered bi-weekly to mentor and study how to carve a variety of projects. • • • The Carberry News-Express A tragedy we were all hoping to avoid “This appears to be exactly what we all thought, it was a tragedy that we we’re all hoping to avoid.â€? Those were the words from RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Bert Paquet during the press conference on March 26, confirming that the body of Chase Martens had been found just after 1:00 p.m. that afternoon. The body was found by a group of search and rescue volunteers from Winnipeg in the creek 500 metres south of the family’s home. • • • The Carberry News-Express Calvert qualifies for Junior Men’s Provincials Braden Calvert, who skipped his rink to a couple of Canadian Junior Men’s curling crowns and a world championship in 2015, is preparing for his final year of junior eligibility 2016-17. He has taken over as skip of Matt Dunstone’s 2016 Canadian junior winners, Colton Lott, Kyle Doering, Rob Gordon, all fine experienced curlers. However, in men’s competition, he will revert to his former junior foursome, Kyle Kurz, Lucas Van Den Bosch and Brendan Wilson, who captured the 56 rink 2016 Carberry men’s bonspiel. Braden’s Granite Club junior curing rink, won a berth in the 2017 Provincial Curling Championships when they defeated Brandon Radford 7-2. • • • The Gazette Baldur’s Donor’s Choice annual canvass may discontinue The Baldur’s Donor’s Choice Annual Meeting was held March 21. In the $7,025 campaign, $7025 was collected and distributed to the seven organizations on the Donor’s Choice list. The Donor’s Choice Group was organized 10 years ago with the objective being to conduct one organized canvass per year in the Town of Baldur and the RM of Argyle. More than $70,000 has been collected and distributed. With only three people present at this meeting is clear that interest has declined. The suggestion was made that no canvass takes place this year. Another meeting will be called in November and at that time a decision will be made about whether the Donor’s Choice Group should continue or disband. • • • Chase the Ace has a winner There was a winner at Chase the Ace, License #LGA 6217-RF at the Baldur Hotel on March 19. Jamie Haegeman from Swan Lake won $16,572.50 when he placed his winning ticket on the Ace of Spades. The Argyle DropIn Centre also receives $16,572.50 for their ongoing expenses and required renovations. The Chase the Ace program has proven to be an effective way to raise money. As no other organization has indicated a willingness to take over the Chase the Ace Program, the Drop-In Centre started a new game March 26 at the Baldur Hotel. When another organization applies and is ready to start their game the Drop-In Centre will end their current game.

don to study for a two-year course. Our competitive advantage is the lower cost of living in Melita compared to studying in the city. For those in the community, the Melita and Area Health Committee is offering financial assistance to qualified applicants. Thanks to Lisa, Ray, and other community supporters of this initiative, our residents will have access to this educational opportunity to pursue a profession as a Licensed Practical Nurse.” www.edwardjones.com
