Museum and Council looking for light

by Glen Kirby

You might say the Hillcrest Museum in Souris was the topic of an ‘illuminating’ discussion. Plans to beautify the exterior of the centuryold building with new lighting were short-circuited last week when Souris-Glenwood Municipal Council tabled a funding request from the Museum Board and instead asked for more information. “We have to be careful with the Hillcrest,” Mayor Darryl Jackson told Councillors at the June 28 meeting. “It’s a pretty magical property but I don’t know if we need to be held over a cliff.” At issue is a $4,700 proposal from the Hillcrest to install exterior floodlights and bury existing overhead power lines. A yard light at the front entrance to the Museum would also be relocated. Some believe the overhead power lines detract from the visual and historic appeal of the building, constructed in 1910 as a home for Fred Sowden, son of the Town’s founder,

W.H. ‘Squire’ Sowden. However, Councillors were divided over whether the lighting project is the best use of funds and suggested that members of the Museum Board are also at odds. Jackson said he “has a dream” that the sides of the castle-like Museum facing the Souris River would be illuminated at night, much like the adjoining Swinging Bridge. Councillor Joe Goodwill wondered how many more tourists the new lighting would draw. When contacted, Museum Board chair Jackie Kirkup declined comment, saying this is a “work-in-progress”. The Museum, like many in communities across Canada, is feeling financial pressure. Council heard that the Hillcrest has asked for the Municipality to forgive its annual property taxes and also cover building and contents insurance at a combined cost of more than $5,000. The Hillcrest suffered a dramatic decline in attendance following Souris River flooding in 2011 and the destruction of the Swinging

Bridge, although Council learned that school bus tours in the last month have increased from previous years. Councillor Bill Tanguay suggested the Museum will need money for a number of upcoming infrastructure projects, including repairs to the front porch. Jackson suggested the Museum may also be strapped by repairs earlier this year to an historic stained glass window. The lighting project is made even more complicated because of previous Council decisions. Jackson admitted that the Hillcrest Board was not consulted when overhead lines were first installed years ago to supply power to the vintage fire engine display located at the west access to the Swinging Bridge. “We’re pretty much obligated to put the overhead line underground because of the way it was first handled,” he said. Councillors committed to new discussions with the Museum Board regarding the lighting project and the overall direction of the Hillcrest in the coming years.

New Souris active adult residence and hotel to begin construction

Ownership group gives final approval for construction of downtown project to begin Souris, MB, July 5, 2016 - Following last Septembers announcement of plans for a multistorey downtown building, work has progressed to finalize the ownership group, who approved the design and engineering stage of the project. That work is now complete and the ownership has given Steel Creek Developers approval to proceed with construction of the new 4 storey residence building and Souris Hotel. The project will be located on the large open lot in downtown Souris on 1st St. S which is the historical home of the original Murray Autogroup Dealership and the early King Edward Hotel. Construction is slated to begin as soon as possible.

The active adult residences will be called The Murray Building and the hotel will be named the Souris Hotel. This project brings a new development to downtown Souris and will augment the growing services that Souris provides residents and visitors. With wellappointed active adult residence apartments, The Murray Building offers empty nesters and retirees a change in lifestyle as they step away from the burden of home ownership to imagine a new way of life. This new found freedom allows them to enjoy new activities, make new investments in family or cottage or travel down south in winter. The spacious comfortable apartments have special personalization upgrade opportunities to those who sign up in the next couple months. And, everyone will enjoy the heated indoor ground

As you know, our Clubroom was closed on Friday, July 1, and therefore, our meat draw was on Saturday, July 2. There was a lot of activities in Town this weekend and these, I think, contributed to a smaller attendance. We did have quite a few people that were in Town for the Janz Reunion and two of them did manage to collect a package of meat. Only two people managed to take home two meat packages and they were Eleanor Hayes and Smitty. The 50-50

draw totalled $80 and the winning number belonged to Barb Janz. The “Chase the Ace” pot was $793.50 and Bob Balbar won the chance to put it in his pocket. The Ace of Spades remained elusive and so someone will try again next week. We are planning a fun golf day on Saturday, August 27. It will be a Par 3 event with a steak barbecue at the Clubroom after all the swinging is done. I understand that the steak supper will cost you $20 and you are responsible for your green fees. Happy Hour - 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. - every Saturday in July and August. Please come and relax with us.
