Santa took a few hours out of his busy schedule to stop at Sadler’s Creekside Greenhouse in Souris on December 3. Many young individuals used this opportunity to put in a good word for themselves before the big day. Three-yearold Hayden Milliken has Santa’s undivided attention. Grandma and Grandpa, Barb and Ken Falloon, along with their daughter, Lindsay, try to convince Kennedy that Santa is a pretty cool dude but he’s not so sure if he agrees. Santa was in Souris at Sadler’s Creekside Greenhouse on Saturday to visit all the young children.

Michael Gabriel’s Strings Attached concert series has been extremely well received by the public and the press since its inception. With Michael’s original storytelling and emotionally fluid material, intricate choir arrangements, and a gifted orchestral ensemble, the Strings Attached live experience has become “a breathtaking coming together of sound” according to Marielle Julian of Velvet Rope Magazine. Michael performed at the Souris Avalon Theatre on December 1 and was joined by the local Souris Choir members. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER
“There’s A Song In The Air” Michael Gabriel’s “Strings Attached” concert in Souris played to a full house. Accompanied by a pianist and three young women on strings, as well as the Souris Community Choir, audience members were treated to a thrilling evening of sound. Michael Gabriel had come to town on Monday to rehearse with the “backup choir”, a new experience for most of the Souris voices. But by Thursday evening, they were ready to “ooh” and “ahh” and sing their hearts out in support of this talented performer. They
even sang two selections on their own, a 6-part version of “Do You Hear What I Hear?” as well as a heart-warming “When Christmas Comes”. Although Gabriel writes much of his own music, and arranges it for the various instruments and choir, he also added several cover tunes, adding to everyone’s enjoyment. And when Michael asked the audience to join him in singing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah!” the assembled voices added their own harmonies in the choruses, producing a warm luscious sound
throughout the theatre, and lifting the spirits of all gathered, On Friday, Michael and his guitar and his keyboard accompanist, Alex Alfred of Alabama, went to the Souris Personal Care Home to perform a few numbers as part of “Concerts in Care”. This programme, offered through the Manitoba Arts Network and working with the local Souris District Arts Council and the Souris PCH, facilitated the first of three artists to perform at our local PCH this year. Often times, music can speak to
seniors in our care facilities, perhaps triggering a memory, or giving them a sense of peace. This program would not be possible without the generosity of the Thomas Sill Foundation, the Manitoba Arts Council, the Bank of Montreal, the Pollard Family Foundation, and Gendis Inc. The Souris District Arts Council is grateful for the support they get in this community for their activities, and wishes everyone a song in your heart and a lilt in your step, as you share in the spirit of this Christmas season.

Souris Chamber adopts a family for Christmas by Darci Semeschuk Christmas can be a joyous time of year, but it
can also be one of the most stressful times for those barely managing to get
by. Small town residents are often insulated to the fact that there are
needy families right in their own community. It’s not something we see on the streets like they do in larger, urban centres so the fact that some families can barely put a meal on the table or a gift under the tree, often goes unnoticed. It could be a neighbour, a single mother or father, or a lonely senior citizen. Whatever the case may be, the Souris Christmas Cheer Board is there to ensure those individuals and families have a joyful Christmas. “We have several programs that we implement during the Christmas season,” commented Marg Bond, chairperson of the Souris and Area Christmas Cheer Board. “There’s the hampers of course, and the “adopt a family” program but what we’re focusing on mainly right now is the “Christmas gift tags”.” The “Tags” program is where the Christmas Cheer Board has people registered to receive a gift. Mostly it is for children but there are tags for adults as well.
The Christmas trees are located in Western Financial, Woodfire Deli, Westoba Credit Union, and the Royal Bank in Souris. Each tree contains a number of tags with an individual’s gender, age, and gift preference. Anyone wanting to purchase a gift for the Christmas Cheer Board to distribute can select a tag or two, purchase a gift and return it, unwrapped with the tag attached back to the location where they selected it. Bond says that there are approximately sixty tags on the four trees and as of December 5 there were quite a few still in place. The deadline to return the gift is Friday, December 16. In addition to the tags and adopt a family, the Christmas Cheer Board packs up hampers for those registered to receive one. This year, according to Bond, fifty-two people have registered for a hamper. “We include items such as canned goods, pasta and nonperishable food as well as everything needed for a nice Christmas
dinner,” stated Bond. “Several businesses collect food items and we add chocolates, oranges, milk, vegetables and a turkey or ham. Additionally, we include a gift for each member of the family so that no one gets left out.” Some of the locations that collect food are Souris School, Canada Post, the churches, and Big Way Foods. The Souris Chamber of Commerce adopted a family for the 2016 Christmas season. Their selection is a family of six and $300.00 has been budgeted for that project. While Bond says it’s too late to adopt a family, there are still many ways that you can assist with making Christmas special for individuals and families who might otherwise not have the means to have a special Christmas. You can make a food donation, select a tag and leave a gift or make a cash donation. For more information on how you can help ensure everyone has a happy Christmas, call Marg Bond at 204-483-7318.

Page 4, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, December 09, 2016 Santa made an appearance at the recent Souris and Glenwood Chamber of Commerce Santa’s Workshop. The event makes it possible for children to come out and shop for Christmas gifts for family and friends. Organized each year by Chamber volunteer Sheila Kirkup and her crew of “Christmas elves,” the event includes table from local retailers. Each gift is priced at only $10.00 including tax despite the fact that many are worth much more. This is a perfect way for kids to shop on their own, no parents allowed! Solutions & Substitutions By: Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, I have pens that use refills; the last two worked for a while and then stopped working. The store clerk suggested warming them; they worked briefly and then stopped. Is there anything else that I can do? Refills aren’t cheap! Love your column, it is definitely a must read! Dawn
Dear Dawn, I agree that refills are not cheap. Since there are thousands of different types of pens and refills, your best bet is to contact the manufacturer of the pen instead of talking with the salesperson. Warming the pen tip with a candle flame is typically the easiest way to get ink flowing but does not last. This is also risky
as it could damage the pen tip. If the manufacturer does not give you a satisfactory answer, you may want to consider changing pen brands. Dear Reena, How can I remove shoe polish from carpet? Thanks. Norma Dear Norma, Wash the area with heavy-duty laundry deter-
gent. If unsuccessful, apply glycerine and leave for 1 hour. Wash with warm water. When shoe polish stains won’t budge, clean with one of the following: Rubbing alcohol, Goo Gone or Spot Shot for carpets these are great options. Dear Reena, I am not only getting tired of replacing numerous plug-in air fresheners

around my home but it is also becoming expensive. Do you have a recipe for homemade air fresheners? Thanks in advance. Ruth Dear Ruth, Here is a very simple air freshener solution that you can make yourself. In a spray bottle mix half cup rubbing alcohol, one cup water and ten drops lemon essential oil. Spray room as needed. You can even add a few drops of this recipe to your vacuum bag. Also, placing sprigs of eucalyptus around your home will leave you with a nice aroma. Or put a bowl of vanilla in rooms that need freshening. Another option is to purchase a catalytic lamp, although a little pricey, it should last for many years. These fragrance lamps are said to actually purify the air, eliminate unpleasant odors and leave behind wonderful fragrances that will fill your home or office. One more solution, I love the smell of beeswax candles, what a wonderful scent when lit. This is another great way to make a room smell nice without adding a bunch of unhealthy toxins into the air. Feedback from Reader: Dear Reena, Several years ago a reader sent you a question regarding toilet paper: What is the best toilet paper to buy to get the greatest bang for my money? My husband uses so much toilet paper, what a waste! Erma

This subject has bugged me for years. Not only does the quality come into play, but both the width and thickness become problems. I can’t stand to see the recycled paper floating around in the bowl after a flush. Where is the saving when two or more flushes of water are required? Many times the width of the paper makes the roll look lost on my holder. It’s irritating! The other week I purchased what I thought was good quality toilet paper with a pleasing thickness and softness. I was surprised to see that my toilet paper would not flush down, instead the paper was blocking up. Out came the gloves to remove the paper. The solution: Use less paper so that both me and the bowl are happier. A.M.S. Fabulous Tip of the Week: Make your own gold cleaner: Stir together 1 tsp. baking soda with half cup water. Buff gold with a soft cloth. Always test on an inconspicuous area first. Note: Every user assumes all risks of injury or damage resulting from the implementation of any suggestions in this column. Southwest Cougars cling to seventh place
Page 7, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, December 09, 2016
by Grant Moffatt The Cougars split a pair of games this past weekend moving their record to 1110 as they close in on the midway point of the season. The Cougars continue to impress some nights and make believers out of a lot of people that they are for real. The Cats picked up a 4-3 shootout win on Friday night and then got drubbed 8-1 in Portage on Saturday night with a short bench. The Cougars got off to a one goal lead 18 minutes into the first period when McCullough Park snapped the biscuit home from Dylan Young and Bryce Young. Bryce Young stripped the puck at the Parkland blue line and broke in all alone and snapped it home for a two goal lead at the 4:29 mark. Dustin Mozdzen scored a power play marker
Highlighted calls for service in Souris RCMP area were as follows: November 28, 2016 • Police responded to a male in distress in Souris. November 30, 2016 • Two pickup trucks were stolen from a garage in the Souris-Glenwood rural area, along with multiple firearms, ammo and several other items. Police have made an arrest and are following up on several other leads. December 1, 2016 • Police were called to the Souris Hospital to assist with a mental health patient. The patient was transferred to another health facility by members. December 2, 2016
4 minutes later to get the Rangers on the board. McCullough Park stretched the Cougars lead at the 13:40 mark when he hooked up with Bryce Young with a nice backhand goal. The Rangers responded 26 seconds later when McKenzie Hunter beat Riley Wallace in the Cougar net. The third period saw Mozdzen score his second of the game six minutes into the period to tie the game at three. The teams played scoreless hockey the rest of the way and the 5 minute overtime failed to settle the score. The teams went to the shootout. Bryce Young was stoned on the first shot. Riley Wallace stopped the Ranger’s first shooter. McCullough Park was up next and he made no mistake finding the back of the net. Wallace was up to the test and shut the door

on the second Ranger’s shooter bringing out Tanner Andrew with a chance to win the game. Andrew was on the mark giving the Cougars their 11th win of the year. The Rangers outshot the Cougars 35 -27 as Riley Wallace picked up his 6th win of the year. Saturday night, in Portage, the Cougars dressed
just 15 skaters and then saw McCullough Park go down with a lower body injury early in the game as the teams played a scoreless first period. Central Plains scored three goals in the first 2 minutes of the second and made it four zip before Tanner Andrew got the Cats on the board at the 12 minute mark from Dylan

The best anyone else could do was two shouts. These came from Gale Collinson, Wendy Bilton, Darlene Dooley, Marie Neilson, Jeff Kohut and Judy Smutko. The LITTLE HOUSE was worth $30 and Judy Smutko got it on her last yell. The last Bingo evening of 2016 will be held on Thursday, December 22, and will restart on Thursday, January 5, 2017. Our meat draw of Friday, December 2, was well attended and, as happened last week, Lady Luck
did not especially favour anyone. The only multiple win of two meat packages went to the household of Cathy & Don Smith. The Souris Railway Museum ticket was won by Gale Collinson. The 50/50 draw was worth $147.50 and the winning number belonged to Todd Carlisle. Caitlin Stewart had the chance to take home $1,860 by locating the Ace of Spades. This did not happen, so it will be up for grabs again next week. It was the “guys night to cook” with the proceeds
going to the Christmas Cheer Board. For a donation you got a meal of ham, perogies, coleslaw, buns and dessert. I am told the donation will be over $600. Hope to see you at our Craft/Vendor Sale on Saturday, December 10. It starts at 1:00 p.m. ends at 4:00 p.m. As well as many different articles for sale, you will be able to enjoy a piece of cheesecake and coffee for $4. Plaza Petals will at the Clubroom on Monday, December 12, to conduct
a “Christmas Centrepiece Workshop”. Please contact or drop into the Clubroom for more information. Also planned is a paint night with Kathleen Legasse. Date is not yet known. REMEMBER: Our General Meeting to elect the 2017 executive will be on Tuesday, December 20, starting at 8:00 p.m. All members please plan to attend. We will be having our New Year’s Levee on Sunday, January 1, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
