Back to school in Souris
Riley Kohut, and two friends, flanked by her younger brother, Jackson, are all smiles as they head into Souris School for the first day of classes for 2016 - 2017. Some changes at the school are noticeable such as the new fence that separates the bus drop off area from the parking lot. Principal Guy Williams was on hand to greet each of the eight busses that bring rural students to class each day. PHOTO/DARCI SEMESCHUK
This September is an extra special month for local artist/author September has always been Doreen Winona Logeot’s favourite month of the year, possibly because it is her birthday month, but also because it is the month when many things are beginning, or starting again, after a summer break. This year it is extra special, partly because this September brings in her milestone 60th birthday and partly because she is artist of the month at Lagasse’s Studio of Fine Art. On their own each of these give reason to celebrate but both pale in comparison to the real reason why this September is extra special. Last October, Doreen’s oldest grandson, Chase, was diagnosed with leukemia only two weeks before his 4th birthday. This, of course, was devastating news, and it has been long months of extensive cancer treatments with this past July seeing the beginning of a two and a half year maintenance phase. While it is far from being over, it has been wonderful to see a little boy
who almost a year ago was not able to walk, to become one full of energy and able to play and run like a normal 4 year old and who will be able to start Kindergarten this September. This is by far the biggest reason to celebrate. Because of this, during the month of September at Lagasse’s Studio of Fine Art, Doreen is going to donate 10% of all sales and offer a framed artwork for raffle with the proceeds going to the Children’s Hospital Foundation. There will also be jar available for anyone who might like to throw in a bit of change for the Foundation. During Scarecrow Days, on Saturday, September 24, and the Grand Opening of the new location of Lagasse’s Studio of Fine Art, Doreen will there as the featured artist of the month from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Both Kathleen and Doreen would be thrilled if you are able to stop by to share some refreshments and help us celebrate.

A Year in the Life of Souris District Arts Council - 2016 Ever since the seeds were planted to start an Arts Council 12 years ago, one of our main goals has been to foster the arts in our own community. While planning a year of arts activities, we try to touch on different aspects in the arts, reaching out to new people as possible new concert goers, and yet encouraging our current season’s ticket holders and present attendees with providing another performance they will enjoy so that they will keep on coming back for more. In addition, we want to be able to expand on the artistic endeavours in the Souris area. During this past year, five performances were presented - classically trained Terry Barber took us around the world in 80 minutes with a variety of melodies, both new and familiar; Jesse Peters tickled the ivories, crooning some of our favourite Christmas songs from days gone by; MTC’s rural touring production, The Hound of the Baskervilles, had the audience in gales of laughter with their spoof of this classic tale of detective Sherlock Holmes; Winnipeg’s own Sierra Noble fiddled and step-danced to everyone’s delight and treated us to some of
her newer music written in Nashville, and JetStream, one of the premier ensembles of the Royal Canadian Air Force Band, got the toes a-tappin’ and the hands a-clappin’. Each performance brought its own special artistic talents to the fore, and we were so privileged to be a part of it all. We have also attended workshops, started to develop our own website, and begun the preparations for the coming year’s events. It has been another great year! There are so many people to thank, including the Manitoba Arts Network for including us in their tours, Manitoba Culture, Heritage & Tourism for our Audience Development Grants, the Municipality of Souris-Glenwood for their ongoing support, the Board of the Avalon Theatre who have worked with us to improve the facility for our performances, as well as all of our local sponsors, who so willingly helped us reach our goals by providing their monetary support. And then there are all the volunteers who have helped us – the board members, our members-at-large and our friends of the arts – who have assisted us in being able to host the events we have planned.

And now, Souris District Arts Council is thrilled to be able to announce the artists who will be part of our coming season: • Brad Johner and the Johner Boys from Saskatoon share a taste of Canadian country music. • Michael Gabriel’s Strings Attached’ from Toronto combines his own music with original storytelling, a gifted orchestral ensemble, and a local choir to bring a “breathtaking coming together of sound”. • Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s rural touring production of The Last Train to Nibroc will bring a delightful romantic comedy to our stage. • Jason Farnham of California brings An Evening of Piano in a truly entertaining evening with his Victor Borge-esque style of comedy. • The Beetles, the locally-acclaimed sensations from Brandon, will have take us down memory lane to the 60s and the songs of John, Paul, George, and Ringo We are looking forward to being able to bring the Souris District another year of quality entertainment and enjoyment at a reasonable price.

On Friday, September 2, our meat draw was not well attended but that did not make winning any easier. The only people to collect two meat packages were Mr. and Mrs. Terry Stephenson from California. They are here visiting his family. Jessie Paul held the lucky number on the 50-50 draw and received $68.50. The Ace of Spades pot amounted to $477 and Bob Edgerton hoped the cards would be nice to him. They were not and so someone will be able to try again next week. We enjoyed a turkey supper with all the trimmings. NOTABLE ITEMS: Cribbage starts at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7, and Bingo starts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 8. Legion Week is the third weekend in September. A lunch of soup, sandwiches and dessert will be offered from Monday, September 19 through to Friday, September 23. Our General Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 20, starting at 8:00 p.m. All members please plan to attend. Our 2017 membership cards are now available. The cost is $45.

Enjoy the present! Don’t let yesterday’s disappointment cloud tomorrow’s dream. TIPS: Use broken cassette tapes (not the broken plastic but the tape inside) to tie plants to stakes. To keep cats away from your plants, outside, spread tinfoil on the ground around your plants. Use vinegar in a spray bottle to kill weeds, but not on the grass, or it will die, too. If ever you are moving, or just cleaning house and find wool that you are not going to do anything with anymore, cute fancy buttons, or wooden hangers, we could use them for crafts for us or ADP to use, and we have a few wonderful seniors who love to knit and will make your extra wool into something for others to use and for Christmas hampers, too. Your unwanted things can be made into lots of fun, useful things for others to enjoy! Thank you in advance and hope to hear from you soon. You can drop them off at our office or I could come and pick them up. We make visits to the Hospital and Personal Care Home, as well as to your home, if you would like. Just give us a call and let us know what day or time works best for you, and we will do our best to come then. That’s all for this week. Take care and we hope to hear from you soon.
Welcome smiles for all
Ellen Lewis (L) and Connie Moffatt, long-time secretaries at Souris School, are often the first face students see when they enter the school for a new year. As always, Ellen and Connie greeted each and every student, with a smile. Change is imminent though, as Ellen has decided to retire at the end of September. She will be missed. PHOTO/DARCI SEMESCHUK

try but missed the convert. The score remained at 5-0 until halfway through the second half. New Brunswick was fighting hard for the win too and managed to score a try and got the convert. With about 5 minutes left to go, the score stood at 5-7. Our boys dug deep and pushed hard scoring the final try with just a few minutes to go. Final score 10-7 Manitoba. It was a fantastic week and to be able to come home on the high of a win made it even better. This group of boys had only had three practices together before heading out to Toronto. Their first game of the tournament was their first game as a team. At the beginning of the week they were still getting to know each other and were just a group of rugby players. By the end of the week they had become a team and formed friendships that will last. Thank you to the people of Souris and the Avalon Theatre for supporting our boys and helping to make this an achievable dream.
submitted The U16 National Rugby Festival took place in Toronto from August 15 - 21. Twenty-three boys from Manitoba were selected to play for their province. Among these were Souris residents, Chaz Will, Andrew Ross, Sam West, Zack Thexton and Colton Rosensteel. The week started off with a miserable rainy day. The boys played a hard game against the Ontario 2 team and pulled off a 5-5 tie. The second game was not quite so easy with a loss to Newfoundland. On day 2 they had our last round robin game against the BC 3 team. It was a hard fought game that ended with a loss of 36-5. Their next challenge was Quebec. They were now in the elimination rounds. Another hard fought game in punishing heat and humidity resulted in another loss. The boys kept their spirits up and went into the last game against New Brunswick with a winning attitude. They scored an early

The three books I have for you today are listed as mysteries but are more accurately described as crime novels, as there is little mystery to a couple of them, the culprit being known from the outset. While I had enjoyed the previous books in Maureen Jennings’ Inspector Tom Tyler series, her latest, ‘‘Dead Ground in Between‘ , wasn’t quite as good, but was still enjoyable. Once again the scene is set in WWII England, and involves an Italian POW, a pair of Belgian refugee boys, and a Land Girl, all as major characters. The central theme is the death of an elderly man. When his body is discovered in a secret wartime bunker by the two refugee boys, the search is on for his killer. Things are not nearly that straightforward, however, as the old man’s discovery of a cache of coins dating from 1643 may, or may not, have been a contributing factor in his death. The fact that the young boys go missing almost immediately after discovering the body is another thread. The Italian POW lent out by the near-by camp to work as a labourer at the old man’s farm is an immediate suspect, especially considered so by the man’s nephew, who might have ulterior motives as he suspects the Land Girl, to whom he is attracted, is herself attracted to the POW. Add to all this the on-going personal affairs of the detective and you have a somewhat busy storyline. It seemed a bit too busy at times, as though the author couldn’t really find enough to say about the central mystery and so had to add ‘filler’ with the other story lines. Still, it was a good enough tale. For me, the disappointing book of the three was ‘Without the Moon’ by Cathi Unsworth. Also set in England during the Blitz, it was touted as being an eerie story of murder, à la Jack the Ripper. Well, it wasn’t. Based on real events, it details the murders of prostitutes by ‘the Blackout Ripper’, but the story jerks back and forth among so many mostly unremarkable characters that the thread is lost. The identity of the likely murderer is known almost from the start. But as the investigation, and murders, continue, it seems there might be more than one killer. This becomes another problem with the book as the story stops midway, finishing off one storyline, and then starts another. The connection between the two is tenuous at best and does nothing to add to the flow of the story. Overall a disappointment. ‘His Bloody Project’, by Graeme Macrae Burnet, was definitely the most interesting of the three books, both in style and content. There is little ‘mystery’ to it as from the outset both the crime and the criminal are clearly identified. Instead, we are asked to discover, and think about, why the crime was committed. Set in the Scottish Highlands of 1869, the story is told in several parts and in an unusual, document form, giving it such a genuine feel that it hardly seems

like fiction. The first and shortest section is a fascinating study in perspective, as, through witness statements, the murderer’s character is described by five individuals who knew him – and their descriptions could not be more different. It is a wonderful demonstration of how very differently the same individual can be seen by others. There follows a memoir written by the murderer himself. He never denies his guilt, but instead describes his youth and the events leading up to the killings. His description of life as a crofter in the mid 1800s is one of hardship and helplessness, and presents a damning indictment of the class discrimination predominant at the time. Following the memoir we are given the report compiled by the consulting criminal psychologist, detail-

ing his interviews with the people involved in the case. This again demonstrates the extremes to which class snobbery influenced even those who ought to have known better, while raising some rather pointed questions as to what constitutes insanity and on what basis it should be diagnosed. The book ends with an account of the trial itself. This section is in many ways the best, as it pulls together all of the various views, actions and interpretations previously detailed, with some surprising results. Overall, the story demonstrates the flexibility with which we define truth, justice, and insanity, and reveals the many ways used and many reasons invoked in the use and abuse of power. A story that leaves you with questions.
