Kappa Kickoff to Kristmas creates caring, kindness and a little commercialism

After nine years of hosting the Kappa Kickoff to Kristmas, the bloom has not wilted on the “Kristmas rose.” Still popular with local women, the event sold approximately 160 tickets. Thirty vendors were on hand selling their wares that included clothing, Christmas products, skin care and more. Close to $2000 was raised to split between Souris Minor Ball, Souris Recreation and the Souris and Area Christmas Cheer. Standing in front of their beautifully designed display are the Kappa ladies (L-R): Jackie Kirkup, Lisa Tosh, Theresa O’Brien, Twila Boulanger, Shelley Bennett, Charlottle Parham, Tesa Steinke, Connie Bradshaw, Heather Remillard, Roxy Kowalchuk. by Grant Moffatt The Cougars went into the weekend tied with Eastman with six wins and after the weekend are still tied with seven wins, two points behind Brandon and Pembina Valley. Saturday night, the Selects and Cougars were back and forth all night until Dylan Fontaine scored in the last minute for a 6-5 win. The Cougars jumped out to a two goal lead on goals by Josh Wiens from Jordan Chudley and a minute later Bryce Young hooked up with McCullough Park for the lead. The Selects made it a one goal game before the first period ended. The Selects tied the score early in the second only to have McCullough Park restore the lead with help from Josh Wiens. The Selects continued to battle tieing the score at three after the second and then took the lead early in the third. Callum Fortin evened the score with help from Caley Barscello and Josh Wiens. Bryce Young gave the Cougars the lead, from McCullough Park and Dylan Fontaine, with eight minutes to pay before the Selects tied the game at five with less than 2 minutes to play. The Selects then took an interference call with less than a minute to play. The Cougars power play proved to be the difference

when Fontaine hooked up with Tanner Andrew and Bryce Young for the winner with 35 seconds left in the game. Riley Wallace turned aside 19 shots for the win. Tyler Weatherbie dressed for the short staffed Cougars. Sunday afternoon Brennan Schidlowsky dressed in his first game with the Cougars as Michael Tilbury, Tanner Lawrence and Jory Nychuk sat in the stands. The Capitals jumped out to a two goal lead in the first. The Cougars evened the score as McCullough Park scored on the powerplay. Bryce Young evened the score with Park picking up the helper. The Caps then scored a late second period goal for the lead. The third period saw the Caps score a pair of goals in the first minute for a 5-2 lead. Dylan Fontaine then scored his second powerplay goal of the weekend from McCullough Park but that was as close as the score would get as penalties and a short bench gave the Capitals the two points. Randy Cooke turned aside 33 shots in the Cougar net. The Cougars travel to Eastman for the second meeting in a week and finish the weekend with a visit to the Winnipeg Thrashers.

Neighbours rally to curb illegal moose hunting Continued from page 2 “I found two deer along the main road in the R.M. of Sifton last week,” says Denbow. “Both deer were skinned just far enough to take the hindquarters and back strap off and the rest was left to waste. It was obvious to me that this occurred as a result of ‘night lighting’. It was quite shocking to find and I know of cases where moose have been found in the same condition, missing only the hindquarters.” The Challenge With Enforcement “With the budgets that conservation officers have in place, there’s no way they can enforce the rules,” says McBurney. His view is supported by Sifton Councillor, Scott Phillips who identifies that there is a 10,000 square kilometre territory stretching northwest from the Manitoba-Saskatchewan-North Dakota border which is serviced only by two conservation officers stationed in Virden. It’s almost impossible to secure a timely response when night hunters are spotted. Upon inquiry to the Province, Phillips reports that ten part time officers have been assigned to the area for a short term to help address the issue and

ensure additional visibility to curb activity. This increased coverage has also included some air patrols of known trouble areas. Aerial coverage did detect some illegal hunting activity near Carberry, however foggy conditions prevented identification and apprehension of the suspects. Lobbying the Minister Phillips reports that rural councillors have been actively engaging area MLAs and Member of Parliament for support and have submitted a request to meet with the Minister of Sustainable Development, Cathy Cox at the Association of Manitoba Municipalities at the upcoming convention. In addition to their statistical and anecdotal information about what has been occurring in the area, they also plan to present a petition to illustrate the importance of this matter to area residents. What Can You Do? While exacting legislative change may be a lengthy process, Phillips says that farmers are directed to post no hunting signs on the perimeter of their property to clearly communicate that trespassers refrain from coming onto their land. In the

event that you should discover unauthorized activity on your property at any time but particularly at night, you should call your local RCMP detachment to request their attendance at the scene. Because these hunters will be armed, citizens are urged to be mindful of their own safety and not take matters into their own hands. For more information on the action being taken by Scott Phillips and his fellow Councillors from the rural municipalities of Sifton, Pipestone, Two Borders, Whitehead and Grasslands, or to get more information on how to add your name to the petition to end night hunting in the area, contact the R.M. of Sifton office by phone during office hours at 204855-2423 or e-mail reception_sifton@mymts.net.

by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, I own a wooden curtain rod on which the wooden curtain rings stick and “shudder” when pulling the curtains open and closed (I’ve actually pulled the curtains off the end rings with the yanking they require). How can I best get these non-compliant rings to move smoothly over the curtain rod? Is WD-40 an option or will it become sticky over time? Camea Dear Camea, Rub a bit of furniture polish on the rods so that curtains slide easily; candle or paraffin wax will have the same effect but are time consuming to apply. Although it seems unlikely that WD-40 will become gummy, it will smell, and you may not want that odour in your home. • • • Dear Reena, I want to “WOW” my company by grilling four perfect steaks. Any suggestions before they arrive? Thanks. Leighton Dear Leighton, Don’t open your front door until you read the following suggestions: In a large Ziploc bag, combine half teaspoon salt, one teaspoon pepper, two chopped garlic cloves, two tablespoons soy sauce, one tsp. Worcestershire and one tbsp. olive oil. Close bag and press the seasoning onto meat. Preheat the grill to the highest temperature. Lay each steak on the grill for one minute. Turn over and grill for another minute. Rotate 45 degrees and grill for half the remaining cooking time. Turn again. Ask guests how they would like their steaks grilled. Use your hand as a guide; compare the meat to your hand, feel the fleshy part of your palm below the thumb, if it feels the same the meat is rare. For medium,

touch your ring finger. For well done, touch your pinky. • • • Dear Reena, I have a number of pot lids (as many of us do) and they are “stained” with watermarks and general dirt. I bought stainless steel cleaner which doesn’t seem to work very well and it is messy to use and clean up. Some time ago, I noticed that one of my pot lids had a perfectly round clean spot on it presumably where something fell on it and when I cleaned it; it also took off the watermarks. I have tried experimenting with tomato sauce and baking soda and haven’t figured it out. Whatever it is, it has to be more effective than the store bought stuff. So if you know of something that will clean stainless steel pot lids, pass it on! Lorraine Dear Lorraine, Begin by adding citric acid to the dishwasher soap dispenser and running the lids through a cycle. Citric acid can be purchased at the pharmacy of most grocery stores. If you cannot find it on the shelf, ask the pharmacist to order it in. To brighten the lids, soak them in 5 or 6 denture tablets. Scrub with S.O.S pads to clean (Tip: Store once used S.O.S pads in a foil lined container to slow down rusting). Or mix 4 parts cream of tartar and 1 part hydrogen peroxide, scrub with an S.O.S pad. My favorite option: Place lids in the sink with a half box of baking soda and at least 2 cups of 3% hydrogen peroxide and enough water to cover lid. This formula also works well for cleaning stainless steel thermos interiors. Leave for 30 mins. and rinse well. If this doesn’t tackle the stain, the marks are likely permanent. • • • Dear Reena, Is there a problem using homemade fire starters made

of sawdust and wax or dryer lint and wax in fireplaces? I am concerned about wax creating a coating in the chimney. Thanks for your help. Maurice Dear Maurice, Dryer lint, cardboard egg cartons, pencil shavings, empty toilet paper rolls and sawdust are suitable fire starters used for interior wood burning fireplaces. Wax additions are better left for outdoor fireplaces because as you said, wax buildup in chimneys can become a problem over time. An alternative to homemade wax fire starters is to save old newspapers and layer one loosely over top of another. Following many layers, leave to dry for several months. Toss in the fire as a fire starter; be sure to use black and white ink paper only. • • • Fabulous Tips of the Week: • Here’s my new invention and someone just might need it. Recently I bought a nice pair of brown leather hiking boots. However, they had the ugliest mustard coloured laces (good quality though). I just couldn’t stand them any longer, so one day I dyed them a pretty brown using hair dye. They now match the leather quite well and I’m so contented when I wear them on hiking trips. Submitted by Maria. • In a pinch substitute egg white for glue. Stick light paper together with a little egg white when glue runs out. Submitted by Glenda. The Souris Hillcrest Museum Board Members would like to thank everyone who helped to make our annual Halloween Tea another success. Thanks to those who helped serve, who brought baking, worked the guest table and bake table and supported the rainbow auction table. It was a very wet, miserable day and we appreciate the effort you took to come out and support our tea. A big thank you to everyone who came to my 80th birthday tea. Thank you for the flowers, cards, gifts and to all my family for all the work. Thanks a million. Jeanne Boulanger Coming Events

Cribbage players occupied 5 ½ tables on Wednesday, November 2. The best score belonged to Wendy Bilton and Lyall Edgerton. Second prize went to Marnie Heath and Pearl Marshall. Every once in awhile this happens: There was a tie for 3rd spot – Judy Burkart with Darlene Dooley and Joan Dufily with Lorna Binions. Judy Burkhart also won the 50-50 draw. On Thursday, November 3, our Clubroom was host to 25 people ready to shout Bingo. Definitely the loudest voice belonged to Rae McBurney. She shouted five times and no one came even close. Double yells came from Alys Will, Chuck Dron, Darlene Dooley and Doris Dron. The Little House was worth $35 and

Cindy Janz patiently waited all evening to holler only on it. Our meat draw on Friday, November 4, was a busy evening and Lady Luck did not seem to have any favourites. No one was able to take home more than one package of meat. The diesel locomotive ticket, donated by the Souris Railway Museum, was won by Pearl Marshall. The 50-50 draw was worth $117 and the lucky number was held by Doris Dron. Lyall Edgerton was unable to find the Ace of Spades and so it will again be up for grabs on Saturday, November 12. Birthday wishes went to Chuck Dron and Joe O’Greysik. People enjoyed a turkey supper after all the draws were finished. We have received Volume 7 of the Military Recognition Books. Manitoba RCMP respond to increase in road fatalities During the week of October 23 - 29, nine people died on Manitoba roads. This is a number that cannot be repeated. After a thorough review of road fatalities this year, the statistics are disappointing: • In 50% of applicable fatal collisions, not wearing a seatbelt was listed as a contributing factor • In 48% of applicable fatal collisions, speed was listed as a contributing factor • In 39% of applicable fatal collisions, being impaired was listed as a contributing factor • In 57% of applicable off road vehicle and motorcycle collisions, not wearing a helmet was listed as a contributing factor Note: In a fatal collision, multiple factors may be listed as contributing factors. Everyone has a role to play. Manitobans must wear their seatbelts, slow down and drive sober. The Manitoba RCMP also recognizes that enforcement is a critical part to changing driving behaviour, this year, there has been more enforcement and more impaired drivers taken off our roads. Criminal Code Impaired Drivers arrested and charged. 2015: 1183 (up to October 30) 2016: 1240 (up to October 30) Provincial Traffic Offences (Speeding, seatbelts, cell phones, etc) 2015: 29,458 (up to October 30) 2016: 38,383 (up to October 30) “Manitobans know they must wear a seatbelt, yet our officers are responding to people being ejected from their vehicles on a regular basis. Speeding and impaired drivers continue to kill people at an alarming rate” said Chief Superintendent Mark Fisher of the Manitoba RCMP. “We must all make a change to our driving behaviour or I fear the tragic loss of life on our roads will continue. To ensure our message is heard, effective immediately, I have directed all RCMP officers across Manitoba to focus on road safety. Manitobans can expect to see a stronger approach to traffic enforcement. There is no excuse

for what is happening.” The Manitoba RCMP has also released a video to show Manitobans the real images of what is happening on Manitoba highways. Warning – the video is graphic and may be uncomfortable for some: English: https://youtu.be/eeBYUm0DC8E, Francais: https://youtu.be/oPZlYcjC5eA
