A major winter storm brought up to a foot of snow in some areas of southwestern Manitoba over a period of three days between December 6 and 8. Blowing snow and poor visibility created treacherous driving conditions and most highways were closed for the duration of the storm. Pictured: Roads began to open on Thursday, December 8, and drivers cautiously continued on their way. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER

Winter weather wreaks havoc by Darci Semeschuk For the second week in a row, winter wreaked havoc with all of southern Manitoba. RCMP closed the TransCanada Highway on Tuesday and it remained closed throughout the day and into Wednesday. Travel resumed on Thursday but it was slow going for many stranded motorists. In addition to Highway 1 closure, most other

highways in southern Manitoba were closed as well, including Highway 2, 3, 10, and 21. The truck lot at White Owl Esso was full forcing drivers to park their trucks along Highway 2 in Souris. Snow piled up in Souris and it may take a week before everything is cleared away. Once the storm abated on Thursday, residents were sunk into

a deep freeze as temperatures fell into the danger zone. Environment Canada issued extreme cold warnings for much of the region with temperatures plunging to -30 and wind chills exceeding -40. It was back to business as usual on Monday, December 12, for much of the region. The Municipality of Souris Glenwood reminds everyone that the

snow clearing policy is now in effect. When clearing snow you are required to pile it on your own property. There is an overnight parking ban on Crescent Avenue West from First Street to Second Street South; Second Street South from Crescent Avenue to Fifth Avenue West; First Street South (PTH 22) from First Avenue (Hwy 2) to Crescent Avenue West.

Christmas Cheer Avalon

There could be quite a few cupboards bare these days after the Avalon Theatre threw open its door for two free movies when school was closed due to the major storm that hit southwest Manitoba last week. Darren Janz and Ken Kempthorne thought that local kids could use a special event so they decided the impromptu movie would fit the bill. All that was required was that those in attendance bring a non-perishable item or cash for Christmas Cheer. Judging from the pictures here, quite a bit of food was collected and the kids had a great time. Good job everyone! PHOTOS/DEBBIE BUTLER

Santa’s on his way... to the Community Christmas Supper by Darci Semeschuk It’s going to be a white Christmas this year, much to the joy of many people. Adding to that joy is the fact that the annual Community Christmas Supper that was held for the first time in 2015 will happen once again. Bryan Church of Kirkup Agencies in Souris has assembled his team and they are hard at

work preparing for the special evening on December 21. The Christmas Supper is open to everyone and Church hopes that as many people as possible come through the doors to enjoy a wonderful Christmas meal with good friends, good company, and good music. “In 2015 we served

about 450 people and we’re hoping that climbs to 500 for this year,” Church stated. “It’s just a great evening for many people, despite your station in life. It’s a time to enjoy your community and celebrate.” Organizing the Christmas Supper, which is held in the Souris Community Hall, is no small feat. It takes a team of people to

make something of this magnitude happen. Church says that there are about thirty volunteers working behind the scenes to prepare for the day. The supper will feature turkey and roast beef with all the trimmings you’d expect at a Christmas meal. “Marc Bellon of Prairie Rose Meats is cooking all the meat and Buffy and

Steve of Woodfire Deli are doing the bulk of the cooking,” explained Church. “We’ve got a great team and we are looking forward to Wednesday.” Church says that the meal is a collaboration of many people. There have been business donations and private sponsorship to cover the cost of the supper. Topping off the evening of good cheer, Darren Janz of the Avalon Theatre, will be on hand making sure everyone enjoys a selection of Christmas music

throughout the night. “I believe as a business person it’s important to give back to the community that you live in,” commented Church. “Souris is a fabulous place to live, it’s a great community, and we just want to celebrate that. People who live in a small town work hard to make their community special. It’s what I love about small towns.” Plan to attend the Community Christmas Supper on Wednesday, December 21. Dinner will be served between 4:30 - 7:00 p.m.

dertaken to rescue the priceless horses seized by the Nazis from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna at the war’s outset. Used in the Nazi breeding programme in an effort to produce ‘the perfect horse’, the horses were in danger of being taken, and perhaps slaughtered, by the advancing Russian army as the war neared its conclusion. When the US Army learned of this, a covert rescue mission

was mounted by Colonel Hank Reid, described as “one of the U.S. Army’s last great cavalrymen”. The story covers the early war years as the horses first become imperiled, then traces them through their seizure and subsequent use by the Nazis, and finally details their rescue. While it is an interesting story, it suffers from rather poor writing. Nonetheless, it was still an enjoyable tale of what was for me a previously unknown episode.

submitted The varsity girls basketball team opened up their season by competing at the 12-team Crocus Plains Early Bird Tournament in Brandon on the weekend. The ladies split their games in their pool on Friday winning over Hamiota 43-34 (Aly Kowalchuk 19 pts) and losing to Grandview 6334 (Aly 13 pts). Saturday opened with a 53 -32 victory over Neelin (Tanja Gohl 15 pts), which put the girls in the fifth place game. The ladies played hard but could not keep up with Garden Valley from Winkler as they dropped the game 70-27 (Katie Goldrich-Mcfaul 12 rebounds). The team played

by Gale Collinson On Wednesday, December 7, winter snow was the issue and, unfortunately, we had to cancel our Cribbage evening. Hopefully next week will be better. Our Bingo evening of Thursday, December 8, was attended by 21 hopeful shouters. This week the loudest person was Darlene Dooley making five shouts. Her last being on the Little House for which she collected $30. Betty Devins tried to keep up with Darlene but could only manage to yell three times. Double hollers

came from Marge Rose, Cindy Janz, Gale Collinson, Dave Johnson, and Cathy Nylund. On Friday, December 9, our meat draw was busy and winning tickets seemed to be well spread over the Clubroom. The household of Rae and Ken McBurney collected two packages of meat but other winners had to be satisfied with only one package. Barb McKinnon held the lucky number for the Souris Railway Museum ticket. Carol Urbanowski claimed the 50-50 draw pot of $115. The Ace of Spades was worth $1,967 and Todd Carlisle tried to find it. However, all he could pull was a Joker, so someone will get an opportunity next week. The supper tonight was beef

stew and biscuits. On Saturday, December 10, we held our first Craft/ Vendor Sale. We were pleased with the number of vendors we had and with the large number of people who dropped in to see what was happening. We think it was a success. Sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to give something to our bake table and to all of our helpers. Remember: Our General Meeting to elect the 2017 executive will be on Tuesday, December 20, starting at 8:00 p.m. All members please plan to attend. We will be having our New Year’s Levee on Sunday, January 1, 2017, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.

Over a century of good work comes to an end as Horticultural Society folds

Page 5, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, December 16, 2016

submitted The Souris Horticultural Society was formed August 11, 1913, with approximately 13 members. Later the name was changed to the Souris and Glenwood Horticultural Society. The Society’s history is long and eventful. Through the years they contributed to the enhancement of Souris by caring for and planting the “island”, held information seminars, including landscape designers and home grounds judging classes. Each year they held a Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show. The competition was stiff, as everyone wanted a plaque or trophy. Hillcrest Museum became home to these coveted items when the Club couldn’t support the show any longer. The Flower Shows were held in a variety of places, the first being the Pavilion in the Park, now home to the swimming pool. In 1915, the Show was held at the H.J. Kings warehouses on First Street then known as the Murray Adult Centre and Hotel. IN 1927, the show moved to Kitchen Brothers store, now the Woodfire Deli. Later loca-

tions were the community hall, now Murphy’s Irish Pub; the I.O.O.F. Hall, formerly Crescent Framing; the Elks Hall, now the Souris Early Learning Centre. The last shows were held in the Community Hall in the Complex. A Mother’s Day Tea began in the 1970s as the only fundraiser. Membership fees had started at $1 so it was hard to cover the shows costs. At the yearly May tea, the Club supported the M.S. Society for many years where carnations were sold. Lauren’s Corner Closet created a buzz each May when a fashion show was included at the tea, which was a great crowd pleaser. At the 100th anniversary in 2013, Club members modeled hats from Dawn Bowie’s collection and reminisced about the past. The Society has been active in the community by purchasing items that enhance the community. Five planters for Crescent Manor were purchased and planted each year with bright colourful flowers for the enjoyment of the residents. The Society also presented the Prairie Gardner

magazine to the Library as well as a table in memory of Mrs. Fannie Hollies. A wheelchair accessible picnic table was purchased and placed near the “Petunia Tree” at the junction of Highway 2 and First Street. An automatic door opener at the Library was also part of the list. Current Souris residents perhaps know the Souris and Glenwood Horticultural Society members best for their presence at the “island” where they planted flowers and often in the hot summer sun could be seen weeding the island. Flowers. The 2016 projects were as follows: A $500 bursary to a Grade 12 student who entered the Lakeland College Horticultural program; replacing four planters at the swinging bridge; a donation to the Souris and Glenwood Foundation; monies to the Souris Beautification Committee. The Beautification Committee will take over the work at the “island” to ensure it continues to be a town floral focal point. The Souris and Glenwood Horticultural Society has survived 103 years with the help of many dedicated

members who always came together to make the projects successful. As 2016

draws to a close, so will the Souris and Glenwood Horticultural Society as an

organization. The members thank you for your continued support over the years.

Solutions & Substitutions

Page 7, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, December 16, 2016

by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, How can I remove sticker glue left on new jeans? Jean Hi Jean, The easiest solution is to scrub the residue with an old toothbrush and rubbing alcohol. Dear Reena, A friend has purchased a home with tile and grout everywhere and says both are very dirty. Looking for an easy and effective cleaning process. You have helped us in the past and I’m hoping you can do so again; fingers crossed. Linda Dear Linda, Get yourself a handy little piece of pumice stone. Pour some dish soap onto the pumice stone and wet it, then scrub the grout; looks wonderful. Next spray isopropyl alcohol onto the grout to prevent mildew from growing and discoloring the grout (keep away from small children). Another option is to make a paste of borax and water, scrub grout with an old toothbrush. Feedback from reader: Re: Stuck jar lid Karrie asked you about easy ways to open a stuck jar lid. A colleague of mine passed along this tip which has rarely failed me. Place a wide rubber band (the kind mail carriers use or the ones that hold veggies like asparagus in bundles) around the lid and then try to unscrew it. Works almost every time! Colette Dear Reena, How can I make perfect cream puffs and prevent them from sinking after they are taken out of the oven? Manuel A perfect cream puff is definitely a work of art and here are a few tricks to getting them perfect every time. After you stir

the water, salt, butter and baking powder together, turn up the heat and bring the water to a full rolling boil. Turn the burner to low and dump the flour mixture in all at once, stirring it together with a wooden spoon. Once mixed, remove from heat. Let the dough cool for 20 minutes before ad adding the eggs one at a time. Total time for beating each egg is about two minutes. Test your dough by lifting out a spoonful and dropping it on top of the rest of the dough. If it stays on top and maintains its shape, it’s ready to bake. If not, beat it some more. Drop the dough by large spoonful’s onto a cookie sheet. Don’t crowd the puffs. They should be at least three inches apart. If you want to make mini puffs, drop small spoonful’s on sheets - 15 to each sheet. Without opening the oven to peek during baking, bake at 400 F for 20 to 25 minutes for large or 15 to 20 minutes for mini puffs. Finished cream puffs should feel firm to the touch and appear golden brown. Remove the cream puffs from the oven and pierce the side of each one with the point of a sharp knife (to remove moisture from inside puff); this is not necessary for mini puffs. Cool puffs on a baking sheet, careful to keep them away from drafts. Fill with something delicious like: whipped cream, tuna, chocolate, coffee whipped cream, chicken salad, vanilla custard, salmon or crab mousse. Delicious! Decorate your office in time for Christmas • At the company where I work, I formed 1000 Post-it notes onto the wall in the shape of a Christmas tree. I stuck a paper star on top. Without even requesting it, staff started writing

encouraging holiday messages to other people in the office. This has increased morale during a difficult time of year for some of us. Larissa • Since I am working through the holidays I decided to make the most of it. I shaped cardboard into a house and a gingerbread boy. I completely

transformed my cubicle into a gingerbread house. I bought battery powered lights and used different colored paper to decorate the house. I glued candy onto the cardboard and added a table with a big bowl of candy on it for employees to snack on. So fun and such a great way to bring a smile onto so many

faces. Cameron • We always have an office decorating contest at work and this year I actually won! I used white paper to cut out fancy snowflakes; I hung 50 of them around my desk and it actually looked like a winter wonderland! Clara Note: Every user as-

sumes all risks of injury or damage resulting from the implementation of any suggestions in this column. Test all products on an inconspicuous area first. High winds and blowing snow that created such treacherous driving conditions in southwest Manitoba last week, blew up some beautiful snowdrifts. This area at the Carroll Cemetery saw drifts that covered the head stones. With snow accumulations of close to a foot in some areas, snowmobile enthusiasts may finally see some sled time after two years of waiting for the white stuff. PHOTO/DEBBIE BUTLER

exercises that work multiple muscle areas at once. Therefore, we have come up with three excellent alternatives to the standard bench press. #1 – Standing Cable Press The standing cable press is highly functional because your feet are grounded with high core activation. Standing with your knees slightly bent, position the bar along the midline of your chest with the cables on either side of you. You push the cable away from you while keeping your body stable. This is a great exercise as it can be unilateral (one arm at a time) or bilateral (both arms at once). #2 – Chest Dips A proper chest dip should never be taken for granted. The primary muscle group is your chest, but you are incor-

porating your shoulders and triceps as well. For proper positioning, align your shoulders with your hands and lower yourself with a slight lean forward to 90 degrees and push up in a controlled fashion without locking out your elbows. #3 – Dumbbell Press on an Exercise Ball Like the barbell bench press, you are now switching to a dumbbell in each hand. Lying down, positon your lower body with your hips extending through with glute engagement and no low back tension and raise and lower the dumbbells as you would the bench press. This exercise is functional due to its engagement of the upper and lower body. This is another example of an exercise that can be done unilaterally or bilaterally.

Keep in mind when it comes to overall strength, the bench press is the best recruiter of the chest and shoulders. Do not completely omit the bench press, but know there are other fish in the sea. Mystical evening

It was a magical walk home from work Monday, December 12 for Kim de Koning as she came upon a deer foraging for food in the deep snow. With the new moon peeking through the trees, the scene was magical indeed.
