Students join Beautification Committee for tear down by Darci Semeschuk It was a bright and beautiful summer thanks largely in part to the Beautification Committee who supplied us with beautiful flower boxes, and beds and hanging baskets that brighten the town all summer. And now, the cool temperatures faded the flowers and browned the plants and with winter approaching, the baskets and flowerbeds have been stripped clean as members of the Beautification Committee do their fall tear down. Lifting those heavy hanging baskets is not for the faint of heart and sometimes you need a little extra muscle to help get the job done. Joining the Beautification volunteers, Ken and Arva Wiess, Jim Ludlam and Brian and Leona Perkin were Souris High School students, Kendra Roberts, Chaz Will, Cassidy Gordon, Parker Janz, Aly Kowalchuk, and Lisa Gohl. “We were very thankful to the students for coming out and giving us a hand,” stated Leona Perkin. “The baskets are very heavy and we appreciated their youth and muscles!” Perkins also expressed appreciation to the Souris Parks Board for the use of their truck and trailer and said it was good to see community cooperation. Members of the Souris Beautification Committee enlisted the help of several Souris High School students in taking down the heavy hanging baskets that were enjoyed throughout town this summer. Pictured: Jim Ludlam steadies the ladder as Kendra Roberts hands down a basket. PHOTO/SUBMITTED

The Souris Beautification Committee was thrilled to have some young blood helping with the heavy lifting as they removed the heavy hanging baskets before winter. Souris High School students, (L-R): Parker Janz, Lisa Gohl, Chaz Will, Cassidy Gordon, Kendra Roberts, and Aly Kowalchuk were a huge help getting this job done. The Committee was pleased to have such energetic and pleasant young people assisting them. PHOTO/SUBMITTED PHOTO /SUBMITTED

Through the Co-op model, whereby local members own and control the business, Co-op’s have a vested interest in the community. Co-ops continue to play a vital role in the success of rural communities throughout Western Canada. Business decisions are based on maintaining viable operations that provide required services to the local owners of the Co-op. As communities evolve, Co-ops need to continually adapt to the needs of the marketplace to remain relevant and generate a savings to ensure its long-term presence in the community. While Co-ops will provide a service longer than most businesses, it cannot guarantee any service indefinitely. Although difficult to make, board and management are expected to make decisions on the services offered within each community to protect the long-term viability of the Co-op. Savings, also known as profits, are either reinvested into the Co-op’s facilities to improve the services offered to its members, invested in community projects through donations, or returned directly to the members in the form of patronage allocations and cash repayments. Pembina Co-op continues to focus on creating value by providing personalized service to its members. The Co-op’s retail facilities are updated on a regular basis to maintain a pleasant shopping experience. New facilities are built when the local market is able to support the business for the long term. Over the past year, Pembina Co-op has invested in the following capital assets to improve its services: t $POTUSVDUJPO PG B OFX CVJMEJOH DFOUSF BU 4PVSJT t $POTUSVDUJPO PG GFSUJMJ[FS TIFET BU 4XBO -BLF BOE #BMEVS t 1VSDIBTJOH QSPQFSUZ JO .BOJUPV GPS B OFX GFSUJMJ[FS TIFE t -VNCFS TUPSBHF TZTUFNT BU 0BLCBOL BOE 1JMPU .PVOE Pembina Co-op creates an economic impact in each community through offering employment, paying municipal and education taxes on its facilities, and donations to community events and capital projects. Pembina Co-op has 165 employees with an annual payroll of over $7 million. Extensive training is offered to enable employees to progress in their career and eventually assume management positions within the Co-op. Annual donations and sponsorships exceed $75,000 with a high percentage supporting local initiatives. New bus route for Deloraine, Bus Safety Week by Darci Semeschuk Students in Deloraine School catchement area should be seeing a reduction in busing times now that Southwest Horizon School Division (SHSD) has added another route to the schedule. After reductions several years ago increased route times past the one hour ride time that is mandated by the Province, SHSD decided that in order to accommodate ride times, another route would be added. “We were facing some changes in the Deloraine area that we needed to address in order to be effective,” stated Glynn Warnica,

Operations Supervisor for SHSD. “We had some students transfer in from Waskada and some new Kindergarten students that just pushed us to the maximum.” This brings the total number of routes in Deloraine to five, two to the north and three south into the Turtle Mountains. There are more than 840 students that ride a school bus in SHSD. In total, 35 buses transfer those students, Souris has eight, Hartney has four, Wawanesa has seven including a full bus load of students from Shilo, Waskada has three, Pierson has three, Melita

has five and as we said earlier, Deloraine has five. Those 35 buses travel over one million kilometres each year. According to Warnica, that comes at a cost of $2.08 per kilometre, or $2,080,000 per year. It takes a team to run those buses and transfer that many students to and from school safely everyday. That team includes three licensed mechanics, and operational supervisor, and operational coordinator, an operational technician and 65 professional bus drivers. continued on page 11

Cougars in fourth place

submitted by Grant Moffatt The Southwest Cougars hosted the Interlake Lightning and Central Plains Capitals and improved to 4 wins and 2 losses good for fourth spot in the 12 team Manitoba AAA Midget league. The Cougars saw Grady Franklin of Deloraine on the back end for both games and Tyler Weatherbie dressed on Saturday night as the Cougars worked with depleted numbers on the back end. Saturday night Caley Barscello opened the scoring when he jammed a loose puck home after Carson Brigden fired a change up on net that was misplayed and Barscello cleaned up the garbage 14 minutes into the period. Bryce Young extended the lead from Dylan Fontaine and McCullough Park 13 minutes into the second period as the teams engaged in a tight checking affair. Codey Behum finally beat Riley Wallace in the Cougar net to make it a 2 - 1 game with 4 minutes left in the period before Jory Nychuk restored the 2 goal lead with an unassisted marker in the last minute of the second. The third period saw the Cougars find the net 4 more times for their most lopsided win in the early going. Josh Wiens, with help from Nychuk and Tanner Andrews at 1:20, made it a 4 - 1 game. McCullough Park hooked up with Bryce Young and Dylan Fontaine to increase the lead. Veteran Carson Boyecko then hooked up with Dexter Dalgleish for his first of the year. Josh Wiens finished the scoring a minute later with his second of the night with help from Tanner Andrews and Jory Nychuk. Riley Wallace faced 19 shots in the Cougar net while the Cougars fired 37 on the Lightning net coming

away with a convincing win. Sunday afternoon the Central Plains Capitals came to town looking for their fifth win of the season. The Caps struck 19 seconds in on a Cougar turnover and Mitchell Wilson went in alone and snapped a shot stick side on Randy Cooke. The Cougars evened the score on a penalty kill when Callum Fortin broke away and made no mistake for his first of the year. Dylan Fontaine then hooked up with Bryce Young and Jordan Chudley to take the lead after a period. McCullough Park scored a power play goal with Tanner Andrew and Jordan Chudley picking up the helpers for a 2 goal lead. The Caps evened the score before the period ended with Mitchell Wilson picking up his second of the game to even the score as the teams ended the second period tied at 2. The Caps dominated the shot clock firing 32 shots on the Cougar net ringing 3 shots off the post in the contest. Bryce Young fired a shot on the Caps net 6 minutes into the third and McCullough Park banged in the loose biscuit to take the 4-3 lead. The two teams battled the rest of the way with the Caps having a goal waved off with less than 4 minutes to go as the Cougars earned a big win. Randy Cooke turned aside 29 shots for the Cats while the Cougars scored 4 goals on 20 shots for the win. The Cougars play a pair of games in Portage next weekend when all 12 teams play in the weekend Showcase Tournament. The Winnipeg Wild and Norman Northstars will be the opposition on the weekend. The Cougars have NHL drafts available for $10. See any Cougar to get your ticket.

Pembina Co-op pays $2.8 million during Co-op Week

Pembina Co-op members will receive a cash repayment of $2.8 million during Co-op Week. This cash repayment is a direct result of the positive savings achieved by the Co-op on 2014 operations whereby members received a patronage allocation of $5.0 million. Members will receive a general repayment that is based on their patronage allocation. Repayment rates vary from 35% to 95% including withholding tax, depending on the total amount of equity the member has in the Co-op. Members who have been approved under the Co-op’s age bylaw will also have their equity paid down to the minimum balance. Including the general repayment, bylaw requests and withholding tax, Pembina Co-op

has paid out over $4.0 million in cash repayments during the past year. Co-op president, Marc Grenier, stated that, “The continued strong support of our members has enabled Pembina Co-op to achieve consistent savings. This is passed on to our members through patronage allocations and the cash repayment. The Board appreciates the support we have received from our members over the past year. We would also like to recognize the dedication of our Co-op’s staff in providing our members with the service they require. This combination of strong member support and employee dedication is leading to another positive year for our Co-op in 2016”

Construction of the new building centre at Souris is progressing with a projected opening by the end of February. FCL has started construction of a corporate bulk plant at Swan Lake to replace the existing facility and is expected to be completed by next summer. Pembina Co-op has purchased property by the Manitou Agro site to enable construction of a 5,500 tonne fertilizer shed next year. Construction will begin next spring. Pembina Co-op serves over 11,000 members through its retail facilities in Baldur, Crystal City, Cypress River, Glenboro, Homewood, Manitou, Mariapolis, Minto, Oakbank, Notre Dame, Pilot Mound, St. Claude, St. Leon, Souris and Swan Lake.

Funtime Pottery came to the Clubroom on Monday, October 3, to show people how to paint ceramics. The artists (14 women) chose plates, ornaments, etc. They then painted them in their own special way. Funtime Pottery took the dried pieces to be “fired” in a kiln. While enjoying their painting, everyone was able to partake of tasty appetizers and drinks. Plaza Petals will at the Clubroom on Monday, December 12, to conduct a “Christmas Centrepiece Workshop”. Please contact or drop into the Clubroom for more information. Also planned is a paint night with Kathleen Legasse. Date is not yet known. On Wednesday, October 12, we needed 5 ½ tables for our Cribbage players. Amelia Morden and Cindy Janz finished the evening with the highest score. Second place went to Lorna Binions with Lyle Edgerton and third prize was claimed by Viola Logan with Ken Ryckman. The 50-50 draw was won by Fran Vos. Our Bingo evening

of Thursday, October 13, was attended by 22 hopeful noisemakers. Most of the noise came from Gale Collinson and Dave Johnson. They managed 3 shouts each. Double hollers were made by Gladys Skoc and Barb Gordon. Chuck Dron yelled only once but did it on the looney number to receive $33. Marion Morris also shouted only once to get the Little House pot of $32. On Friday, October 14, our meat draw was very well attended and winning tickets were spread out. Only Bob Edgerton was able to collect 2 meat packages. Larry Neilson held the lucky ticket on the 5050 draw and took home $126. The “Chase the Ace” pot was worth $991 and Myrna Long won the chance to put it in her purse. Apparently the Ace of Spades had other ideas and so it will be up for a try next week. A pork loin dinner was on the menu tonight. We have received Volume 7 of the Military Recognition Books. If you wish a copy, please come to the Clubroom. There is no charge for this very interesting publication. Our 2017 membership cards are now available. The cost is $45. 16103CC0

Janice Fraser celebrates with other BU Alumni submitted Brandon University campus was crawling with old timers joining in the annual Homecoming 2016 celebrations on the weekend of October 14-16. They came from far and wide across Canada, and represented alumni from the 1940s to date. There were approximately 200 people participating in various events, including Athletic Wall of Fame recognitions, walking tours, memory exhibits, basketball games, and a banquet. The TTC Class of 1955-56 was the first elementary school Teacher Training Course to be held in Manitoba on a university campus at Brandon College. Dr. W. W. McCutcheon was the first Dean of Education on the campus. There were 49 students in the first class. TTC 56 alumni Janice Mote Fraser from Souris joined 20 other colleagues at a 60th anniversary luncheon on BU campus on October 15. There was wonderful comradeship as the alumni from this class came together, the first time for some since graduation.

Gerald Brown, who taught in Ninga from 1956-58, prepared the Memories Book for the whole class. He compiled stories of the lives of these first students, their teaching careers, and their memories of the ‘olden days on campus’. It was great to hear about their families, and where the kids and grandchildren are now. On the Saturday afternoon, TTC 56 alumni and friends gathered to view the pictures and citation acknowledging the important work Dr. McCutcheon did in Brandon from 1955-67. Also on the wall are a variety of pictures showing historic views of schools and schooling in the 1950’s era. A memorial clock that was presented to Dr. McCutcheon in 1967 as a farewell note of appreciation for his leadership was re-dedicated. New furniture was acquired to make the alcove very student friendly. All this was accomplished from donations from alumni and friends of the university. In 1999, the TTC Class of 1956 initiated two scholarship to honour Dr. McCutcheon’s leadership. Forty-

SHSD will be rolling out two new buses this week. Imported from the US, these two buses come in at a combined cost of $246,000. “We are constantly upgrading our fleet of buses,” remarked Warnica. “The lifecycle of a bus is 12 years and even after that time, we continue to use them as spares.” Warnica said that they are in

the process of rolling out a new type of engine, pioneered strictly for SHSD. “It’s exciting. We have worked closely with Cummins to get this technology on the road and, in fact, we are the first division in North America to test this,” remarked Warnica. That technology is new and exciting and the Plaindealer will follow up with a full story once the bus hits the road.

FOR SALE BY TENDER Sealed, written tenders for the property situate in the Municipality of Grassland and described below will be received by:

three scholarships of up to $2,000 have been given to date. Two recipients of these scholarships, Karen Kempe (from Alexander School) and Corah Enns (from Ecole Dugald School) were present. Each spoke eloquently at the dedication. They emphasized how the scholarship had been very important in making it possible for them to concentrate on their studies and not have to work extra jobs to make ends meet. They also commended the Education and Music Faculties for their fine instruction and mentorship. It is wonderful to hear how these ladies are providing leadership in the profession today. The dedication ceremony closed with the cutting of the cake by Gerald Brown, and with lots of enthusiastic chatter among the alumni and friends. It was great to see the bonds formed in Brandon College days are still held so closely, when the alumni came together for this memorial celebration. Brandon University is playing a very important role in post-secondary education in southwestern Manitoba.

Happy times at St. Luke’s!

Happy times at St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Souris as the congregation welcomes a new reverend and his family to Souris. Pictured: The Hoskin family, back row (L-R): Andrew, Cindy, Adriana and Jonathan. Front row: Aaron and Ashleigh. PHOTO/SUBMITTED submitted It’s an exciting time at St. Luke’s Anglican Church as we welcome our new shepherd, the

Reverend Jonathan Hoskin, his lovely wife, Cindy, and their four energetic young children, E;dest daughter, Adriana, is nine years old, and she and her sister, Ashleigh are attending a French Immersion School in Brandon. The girls are able to travel to Brandon daily with their father as he is also the new leader of St. George’s Anglican Church in Brandon. Younger brothers, Aaron and Andrew, have been keeping their mother quite busy and entertaining our church family. The young family comes to us from Swift Current, SK, where Jonathan was the rector for six years. Prior to Swift Current, he also ministered in Calgary, AB; Unity, SK; and Milford Bay, ON. Jonathan received a Master of Divinity degree from Wycliffe College, Toronto, ON and a Master of Sacred Theology degree from Emmanuel & St. Chad, Saskatoon, SK. He is the son of an Anglican clergyman. Reverend Jonathan played the piano and sang two worship songs for us at our first service together. His love of both Jesus and music is evident when he sings, and he has been encouraged by Dave Cram to join the Men’s Choir in Oak Lake. When asked about his favourite hymn, he said it would be #751 from “the old blue hymn book” which is sung to the same tune as “Danny Boy”. “I cannot tell why

he whom angels worship, Should set His love upon the sons of men…” Reverend Jonathan has been a minister for 12 years. His reply to the question, “At what age did you find God?” is a large smile on his face and, “He found me around the age of 10!” His favourite passage in the Bible is Ephesians 4: 22-24. “So get rid of your old self who made you live as you used to-the old self that was being destroyed by its deceitful desires. Your hearts and minds must be made completely new, and you must put on the new self, that is created in God’s likeness and reveals itself in the true life that is upright and holy.” There was time for one more question, as four busy children were ready to burst through the church doors into the rain. “What is something that you love about God?” Jonathan: “I love that God is steadfast. He keeps His promises. He will remain faithful.” Services at St. Luke’s Anglican Church take place at 1:00 p.m. Sundays. This is a new time for us since Jonathan is at St. George’s in the morning. St. Luke’s is located at 141 5th Avenue, Souris. Please consider yourself invited to come and meet the Hoskin family and to join us for worship, food and fellowship!

Record audience for Johner Boys submitted Brad Johner and the Johner Boys were an instant hit when they performed in Souris on October 13 before a record audience at the Souris Community Hall. Presented by the Souris and District Arts Council, this concert was the first in their 2016 – 2017 season. Brad Johner was in Souris previously in 2012 and at that time, he had his own back up group. Four years later Brad is now joined on stage by his own very talented sons and they are destined to make a name for themselves in the coming years. Quinn Johner on piano, electric guitar and vocals, Jesse Johner

on drum box and Simon Jasieniuk on bass guitar showed off their talents not only as back ups, but as soloists in their own right. They all have an easy style with the audience, endearing them to everyone in attendance. What a wonderful concert to begin the 2016 – 2017 season.
