Varsity girls defeat hometown Steinbach submitted

The varsity girls basketball team travelled to Steinbach last weekend for their last tournament action before Christmas. The girls opened with a heartbreak-

ing loss to Calvin Christian (the eventual tournament champions) by one point. Tanja Gohl led the way for the Sabres scoring a game high 17 points and hauling in 12 rebounds. Aly Kowalchuk added 12 points and

seven steals in the loss. On Saturday the ladies rebounded well with a convincing 58-37 victory over Rosenort. Kowalchuk poured in 16 points in the victory with Gohl adding 12. Rosie Perez and Cassi-

dy Gordan each chipped in with six points. This put the team into the consolation final against the hosts from Steinbach Christian. The ladies were up for the challenge as their defense was outstanding which helped

them jump out to an early lead. They would take the game with a 55-17 score. Everyone on the team hit the scoresheet with tournament All-Star Lisa Gohl scoring 13 points, and fellow guard Camille Punay

adding 12. It was an excellent tournament as the ladies improved every game as they continue to prepare for their home tournament, The Sabres Shootout after the break, January 13 and 14, 2017.

by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, We live in a 1930’s heritage home and there is natural tile in front of the fireplace. Unfortunately, the tile has been scraped by the bottom of a chair. We have tried to fix it but with no luck at all. Would you have a suggestion for us? Robert Dear Robert, For many surface scratches you can buff them out with fine grit sandpaper or fine steel wool. A

popular handyperson expert trick is to purchase one tile to match the scratched tile, sand the tile to produce tile dust. Cover scratches with instant glue and pack the scratch with the tile dust. Gently sand after the glue is set. Dear Reena, I am newly married and want to take good care of my home. At my wedding shower, a conversation broke out about some of the necessary areas in the home that people forget to clean.

What do you think they are? Kaley Dear Kaley, The kitchen sponge and dishcloth are often left too long before changing. Other forgotten areas of the home may include: the space between appliance and counter, behind appliances, floor and wall vents, ceiling fans, top of fridge, pillows (decorative and bedroom) and mattress cleaning. Dear Reena, I am so frustrated with holiday baking. I follow

every recipe exactly as it states and my cookies and cakes always burn. What am I doing wrong? Candice Dear Candice, It is important to note that baking times are only guidelines because ovens typically bake at different rates and vary slightly when it comes to temperature. Weather (humidity), altitude, oven pans i.e. glass vs. metal and oven models will change the outcome of your food. You are the boss of your oven; baking time is done when you say it’s done. Begin by purchasing or borrowing an inexpensive thermometer to test your oven temp. Check baking 10 minutes before the recipe states, if the toothpick comes out clean, baking is complete. If baking is browning too quickly on top, cover it with foil. Dear Reena, How do I clean road salt stains from my rubber car mats? I tried vinegar and it doesn’t clean very well. Bill Dear Bill, Begin by beating the mats with a broom to remove most of the loose dirt and dust. Next vacuum the mats until no dirt remains. Using either dish soap or

carpet shampoo and water, create lather and distribute onto the salt stains, scrub with a stiff brush. Rinse and let air dry. Handy Hints of the Week: • When I was using a permanent marker one day, I noticed that it seeped through the paper onto the wood table that I was writing on. I immediately sprayed the area with hairspray and the ink disappeared without damaging the wood. Submitted by Brittany • Hard shell clams are easy to open if you pour boiling water over them. Submitted by Ronald • I save old shower curtains and wash them well. When the curtain is clean, I use it for a tablecloth at picnics. I also save the curtain rings for napkin holders. Submitted by Sam • I have worked in the manicure industry for many years. For longer lasting nail polish, I wipe each nail with vinegar before applying polish. Submitted by Shauna Tasty Turkey Tips: • Before cooking turkey, defrost the meat in the fridge. Leave the turkey at room temperature for one hour before roasting to en-

sure that it cooks evenly. • Make your own garlic butter to add wonderful flavour to your turkey. Finely chop 1 tbsp. of each of the following: fresh rosemary, thyme and sage. Add two cloves grated garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Add one cup room temperature softened butter. Stir all ingredients together. Loosen the skin of the turkey and take three quarters of the garlic butter and rub it between the skin and the meat. As the butter melts it will flow throughout the turkey while cooking. Stuff any remaining herbs into the cavity of the turkey along with chopped carrots, onion and celery. Smear remaining garlic butter on the outside of the turkey. • Before cooking, pour chicken stock around the turkey. Baste every 30 minutes. Brenda Wiebe collected three meat packages and Tom Alston went up for two. Brenda does have Tom to thank for most of her wins since he drew her number each time he won. Southwest Cougars okay with winter

Page 5, Souris Plaindealer, Souris, MB, December 23, 2016

by Grant Moffatt The Southwest Cougars spent the week at home after Manitoba was hit by the first big taste of winter. The Cougars for the first time since moving to Souris in 1991 had practice cancelled twice in a week and hit the ice Friday night on rusty blades. The Cougars weathered the storm on Friday night and skated to an ugly 5-3 win over the Norman North-

stars and then dominated the Kenora Thistles Saturday night with a 5-0 shutout, the first of the season. The Cougars opened the scoring midway into the first when Carson Boyecko took the feed from Tanner Lawrence and Jory Nychuk and blew down his wing and fired a bullet past Allan Kohli in the Norman net. Alex Murray evened the score 17 seconds later as the teams

left the ice tied at one. Bryce Young scored and unassisted goal 14 minutes into the second and Jared McCorrister, who dressed as an AP, scored 3 minutes later for the two goal lead. The Northstars opened the scoring early in the third when Calen Ross beat Riley Wallace in the Cougar net. Caley Barscello then hooked up with Carson Boyechko on a Cougar man advantage to restore

Maguire urges Liberals to change Registered Retirement Income Fund rules Conservative legislation will eliminate mandatory withdrawals and give seniors more financial flexibility OTTAWA - Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris, urged backbench Liberal MP’s to buck their Party Whip and vote in favour of C-301, which will eliminate the current minimum withdrawals from senior’s Registered Retirement Income Funds (RIFF). This will enable seniors to cash in on their retirement savings when it is most financially advantageous to them. “Many Westman seniors, who have diligently saved for retirement and have invested wisely, are well within their right to ask that mandatory minimum withdrawals, out of their RRIF be completely eliminated,” said Maguire. “I urge my Liberal colleagues to break ranks with Cabinet and vote in

favour of this legislation.” The issue of mandatory minimum withdrawals from Registered Retirement Income Funds has long been a thorn in the side of Canadian seniors. The federal government’s current mandatory minimum withdrawal system for seniors, who hold a RIFF, mandates that beginning at the age of 71, they must start withdrawing a growing percentage of their tax-protected savings each year, regardless of whether they need the funds. The minimum rate at age 71 is 5.28% per year and increases each year, based on inflation, to a maximum cap of 20%. In response to what this legislation means for Westman seniors, Maguire said, “It will have an immediate benefit by finally removing the archaic and outdated legislation that forces seniors to make mandatory withdrawals regardless of their own

financial situation or the current state of the financial market.” Many low-income seniors are hurt by the current RIFF rules as it forces them to withdraw savings at an unsustainable rate, potentially leaving them without their savings when they need it most. More Canadians are living longer and the rules have not kept pace with the change in life expectancies. As of right now, there are over 265,000 seniors living in Canada who have reached the age of 90. It is expected that number will only continue to grow in the years ahead. Maguire concluded, “I firmly believe and have long advocated that the government has no business in forcing Canadians to divest themselves of their RRIF. Riley Wallace turned aside 28 shots for the win while Allan Kohli stopped 33 Cougar shots. Saturday night, the Cougars faced off against the Thistles nursing a two point lead. Josh Wiens finished off a three way passing play from McCullough Park and Dylan Fontaine when he snapped a shot home from the high slot to open the scoring at 12:27 of the first. Little did the Cougars know that the

Wien’s goal would be the game winner as the Cougars held the Thistles at bay the rest of the night. The second period saw Dylan Fontaine score from Carson Boyechko at the 15 minute mark and then Carson Brigden tipped in a pass from Dylan Fontaine with the man advantage with help from Jordan Chudley, 17 minutes into the second. The goal was the first for Brigden on the year. The third saw McCullough Park improve the lead to four when he snapped home a Bryce Young feed in the second minute. Old-Fashioned Christmas held at Hillcrest Museum

On Saturday December 10, over 60 guests were treated to an Old-Fashioned Christmas at Hillcrest Museum. Nikki Moreau and Sharon Howell of Plaza Petals shared their magical touch as they transformed the Museum into a winter wonderland. The smell of fresh cedar and spruce and the candlelight setting delighted the guests. Master of Ceremonies Keven Bowie entertained the crowd. What a blessing it was to have Laura Symons, Jean Dornian, Glenda McConnell and Keven Bowie share their musical and poetry talents. On more than one occasion they had the crowd on their feet and many a Christmas song brought tears of joy and happiness. Guests were also treated to some amazing food supplied by the Hillcrest Museum Board. We are grateful to Barb and Sean Murphy of Murphy’s Irish Pub for offering their bar services. Thank you to everyone who attended this amazing and fun evening. PHOTOS/SUBMITTED

Treherne, Carberry and Portage La Prairie RCMP officers, with conservation officers from Manitoba Sustainable Development, deployed with snowmobiles and trucks. The males were located by RCMP after being lost for more than six hours. Both
